      <description>&lt;p&gt;Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a common problem in general the Canadian population. It can effect day-to-day activities and is also associated with several health issues. This study aimed to investigate the association between co-morbidities and the prevalence of EDS over a four-year period in adults living in two First Nation communities. Data collected during the First Nations Lung Health Project (FNLHP) conducted in two Cree First Nation communities in Saskatchewan in 2012-2013 (Cycle 1) and 2016 (Cycle 2) were used for this analysis. There were 859 participants aged 18 years and older at baseline (Cycle 1) and 821 participants aged 18 years and older at follow-up (Cycle 2) who completed the interviewer-administered questionnaire. An Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) score &amp;gt; 10 was considered to be abnormal and identified as a case of EDS at both time points. A multilevel logistic regression model using a generalized estimating equations approach was used to analyze the data. The prevalence of EDS at baseline (Cycle 1) was 11.2% (91/815) and 10.0% (80/803) at follow-up (Cycle 2). Based on the predicted model, longitudinal change in the prevalence of EDS was -0.11% for 358 individuals who participated in both cycles. There were 49% males at baseline and 48% males at follow-up. Multivariate regression model results revealed that crowding, shortness of breath, loud snoring, chronic lung disease, depression and gastric reflux were the main significant predictors of EDS. In addition, the interaction between sex and age was significant. Some of the co-morbid conditions were associated with EDS. Therefore, managing such conditions requires considerations in strategies to decrease the prevalence of daytime sleepiness.Circadian rhythms regulate many physiological and behavioral processes, including sleep, metabolism and cell division, which have a 24-h oscillation pattern. Rhythmicity is generated by a transcriptional-translational feedback loop in individual cells, which are synchronized by the central pacemaker in the brain and external cues. Epidemiological and clinical studies indicate that disruption of these rhythms can increase both tumorigenesis and cancer progression. Environmental changes (shift work, jet lag, exposure to light at night), mutations in circadian regulating genes, and changes to clock gene expression are recognized forms of disruption and are associated with cancer risk and/or cancer progression. Experimental data in animals and cell cultures further supports the role of the cellular circadian clock in coordinating cell division and DNA repair, and disrupted cellular clocks accelerate cancer cell growth. see more This review will summarize studies linking circadian disruption to cancer biology and explore how such disruptions may be further altered by common characteristics of tumors including hypoxia and acidosis. We will highlight how circadian rhythms might be exploited for cancer drug development, including how delivery of current chemotherapies may be enhanced using chronotherapy. Promising prospects are arising with new preclinical and clinical therapeutic strategies using small molecule targeted therapies, RNAi, stromal therapies, and immunotherapies. With a better understanding of the biology to aid target selection and discovery of biomarkers to aid precision medicine, better opportunities will evolve to shape the therapeutic landscape, enhance patient quality of life and increase overall survival.The mycotoxin zearalenone (ZEN) is a common contaminant of swine feed which has been related to a wide range of reproductive anomalies in swine, such as pelvic organ prolapse, anestrous, and pseudopregnancy. New information is needed to understand how ZEN and related metabolites accumulate in swine reproductive tissues. We conducted a feeding study to track ZEN and the metabolite α-zearalenol (α-ZEL) in swine liver and reproductive tissues. Thirty pubertal gilts were randomly assigned one of three treatments, with ten pigs in each treatment group (1) base feed with solvent for 21 days, (2) ZEN-spiked feed for seven days followed by base feed with solvent for 14 days, and (3) ZEN-spiked feed for 21 days. At the end of the trial, liver, anterior vagina, posterior vagina, cervix, uterus, ovaries, and broad ligament were collected from pigs. ZEN was found in the anterior vagina, posterior vagina, cervix, and ovaries, with significantly higher concentrations in the cervix relative to other reproductive tissues. ZEN and α-ZEL were found in liver tissue from pigs in each treatment group. Our results show that ZEN accumulates more in the cervix than other reproductive tissues. The presence of ZEN in reproductive tissues may be indicative of ZEN-related reproductive symptoms. Future work could examine how ZEN concentrations vary in reproductive tissues as a factor of the pigs age, weight, sex, or parity, to establish parameters that make pig more sensitive to ZEN.Lymphomatous infiltration of kidney parenchyma is a frequent complication of systemic hematologic malignancies and often shows subtle clinical presentation. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma represents the most frequent form involving the kidney, with advanced stage at diagnosis, poor outcome, and risk for central nervous system relapse if not adequately treated. Kidney biopsy can provide specific and early detection of these cases, helping in the differential diagnosis with more frequent entities. Finally, further hematologic workup (bone marrow biopsy, complete blood cell count, and positron emission tomography) can distinguish secondary involvement of the kidney from the rarer kidney-limited forms, especially in patients without a previous diagnosis of lymphoma.  The paroxysmal nature of migraine is a hallmark of the disease. Some patients report increased attack frequency at certain seasons or towards the end of the week, while others experience diurnal variations of migraine attack onset. This systematic review investigates the chronobiology of migraine and its relation to the periodicity of attacks in existing literature to further understand the oscillating nature of migraine. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;PubMed and Embase were systematically searched and screened for eligible articles with outcome measures relating to a circadian, weekly or seasonal distribution of migraine attacks.We found that the majority of studies reported morning hours (6 am-12 pm) as the peak time of onset for migraine attacks.  Sensory hypersensitivities such as photophobia, phonophobia, and osmophobia are common in patients with migraine. We investigated the burden of these multiple sensory hypersensitivities in migraine. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In this cross-sectional study, 187 consecutive patients with migraine (26 men/161 women; age, 45.9 ± 13.2 years) were included. Sensory hypersensitivity symptoms such as photo-/phono-/osmophobia and accompanying symptoms were determined by neurologists in interviews. The Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS) was used to assess headache-related disability. The Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K6) was also administered. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Photophobia, phonophobia and osmophobia were observed in 75.4%, 76.5% and 55.1% of the patients with migraine, respectively. A significant overlap in sensory hypersensitivities (photo-/phono-/osmophobia) was found; the proportions of patients with 2 and 3 coexisting sensory hypersensitivities were 33.2% and 41.7%, respectively. The MIDAS score was higher in those with 3 sensory hypersensitivity symptoms than in those with 0 to 2 sensory hypersensitivity symptoms. A generalized linear model with ordinal logistic regression analysis revealed that multiple sensory hypersensitivities, younger age, more migraine days per month, and a higher K6 score were significantly related to the higherMIDAS score. &lt;/p&gt;

This work focused on analyzing a formulation of the Fricke gel dosimeter consisting of methylthymol-blue and benzoic acid through magnetic resonance imaging. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The gel dosimeter samples were irradiated using 6, 10, and 15 MV photons with different levels of doses and read using a 1.5T scanner in order to evaluate the dose-response sensitivity and to study the effect of benzoic acid concentration, diffusion coefficient and temperature and to determine the temporal stability of the gel dosimeter. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Inspection of radiological properties revealed that this gel dosimeter can be considered as a tissue equivalent medium. Within the dose range 0 to 1000cGy, the R1 sensitivity and R2 sensitivity of the gel dosimeter equaled 0.058±0.003 and 0.092±0.004s &lt;br&gt;

&lt;p&gt;We delivered a 10×10cm &lt;br&gt;
 open field at 90° and head-and-neck clinical plan, generated with the volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) technique, to an anthropomorphic phantom in three scenarios with no bolus on the phantom's surface, with Superflab, and with eXaSkin. In each scenario, we measured dose to a central planning target volume (PTV) in the nasopharynx region with an ionization chamber, and we measured dose to the skin, at three different positions within the vicinity of a neck lymph node PTV, with MOSkin™, a semiconductor dosimeter. Measurements were compared against calculations with the treatment planning system (TPS). &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;For the static field, MOSkin results underneath the eXaSkin were in agreement with calculations to within 1.22%; for VMAT, to within 5.68%. Underneath Superflab, those values were 3.36% and 11.66%. The inferior agreement can be explained by suboptimal adherence of Superflab to the phantom's surface as well as difficulties in accurately reproducing its placement between imaging and treatment session. Muvalaplin in vivo In all scenarios, dose measured at the central target agreed to within 1% with calculations. &lt;/p&gt;

However, whether the stiffness of cellular microenvironment influences osteogenic responses in vascular SMCs is not well understood. Here, we cultured SMCs on the poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) substrates with varying stiffness from 0.363 to 2.327 MPa. The cell osteogenic transdifferentiation was induced by β-glycerophosphate. Our findings demonstrated that the extent of osteogenesis in SMCs varied with the substrate stiffness. On three substrate stiffness, cells on the intermediate one (0.909 MPa) showed the highest extent of the osteogenesis based on the expression of osteogenic markers and calcium deposition. Transforming growth factor-β1 and autophagy were involved in this stiffness-dependent process. This work highlights the importance of substrate stiffness to the osteogenesis of vascular SMCs, giving new scientific information for understanding of SMCs-mediated vascular calcification and designing of vascular implants.There were gender differences in the prevalence and severity of allergic diseases. Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) were recently reported to play a critical role in allergic diseases. We investigated the sex-dependent differences in ILC2-dominant allergic airway inflammation model using TB cell-deficient mice, and determined the gender differences of ILC2 levels in patients with asthma and allergic rhinitis. Female mice exhibited higher levels of inflammatory infiltration and large production of IL-5 and IL-13, especially for ILC2 levels compared to male mice with the induction of IL-33. However, no significant differences were found for the levels of circulating ILC2s between the genders of patients. The treatment of testosterone significantly decreased the intracellular type 2 cytokines in ILC2s and the proliferation of pure ILC2s in response to epithelial cytokines.       <description>&lt;p&gt;We have identified several noncongeneric compounds with predicted low micromolar activity for 3CLpro inhibition, which may constitute possible lead compounds for the development of antiviral agents in Covid-19 treatment.Cotton fabrics with durable and reusable daylight-induced antibacterial/antiviral functions were developed by using a novel fabrication process, which employs strong electrostatic interaction between cationic cotton fibers and anionic photosensitizers. The cationic cotton contains polycationic short chains produced by a self-propagation of 2-diehtylaminoehtyl chloride (DEAE-Cl) on the surface of cotton fibers. Then, the fabric (i.e., polyDEAE@cotton) can be readily functionalized with anionic photosensitizers like rose Bengal and sodium 2-anthraquinone sulfate to produce biocidal reactive oxygen species (ROS) under light exposure and consequently provide the photo-induced biocidal functions. The biocidal properties of the photo-induced fabrics (PIFs) were demonstrated by ROS production measurements, bactericidal performance against bacteria (e.g., E coli and L. innocua), and antiviral results against T7 bacteriophage. The PIFs achieved 99.9999% (6 log) reductions against bacteria and the bacteriophage within 60 min of daylight exposure. Moreover, the PIFs showcase excellent washability and photostability, making them ideal materials for reusable face masks and protective suits with improved biological protections compared with traditional PPE. This work demonstrated that the cationized cotton could serve as a platform for different functionalization applications, and the resulting fiber materials could inspire the development of reusable and sustainable PPE with significant bioprotective properties to fight the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the spread of other contagious diseases.Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) is a promising chemical imaging method. In this paper, we established an atmospheric pressure (AP) matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) MSI method for the microscopic distribution analysis of endogenous molecules, for example, sucrose, caffeine, and caffeoylquinic acid, in the coffee bean endosperm. Application of the proof-of-concept illustrated here, using a feedback loop to couple in situ material characterization and the reaction conditions via a decision-making algorithm, can be readily envisaged in optimizing and understanding a broad range of systems including catalysis.Anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) have attracted the attention of the scientific community during the past years, mostly because of the potential for eliminating the need for using costly platinum catalysts in the cells. However, the broad commercialization of AEMFCs is hampered by the low chemical stability of the cationic functional groups in the anion-conducting membranes required for the transportation of hydroxide ions in the cell. Improving the stability of these groups is directly connected with the ability to recognize the different mechanisms of the OH- attack. In this work, we have synthesized eight different carbazolium cationic model molecules and investigated their alkaline stability as a function of their electronic substituent properties. Given that N,N-diaryl carbazolium salts decompose through a single-electron-transfer mechanism, the change in carbazolium electron density leads to a very significant impact on their chemical stability. Substituents with very negative Hammett parameters demonstrate unparalleled stability toward dry hydroxide. This study provides guidelines for a different approach to develop stable quaternary ammonium salts for AEMFCs, making use of the unique parameters of this decomposition mechanism.Airborne pathogens causing infectious diseases are often highly transmittable between humans. Therefore, an airborne pathogen-monitoring system capable of on-site detection and identification would aid tremendously in preventing and controlling the early stages of pathogen spread. Here, we describe an integrated sampling/monitoring platform for on-site and real-time detection of airborne viruses. We used MS2 bacteriophage and avian influenza virus (AIV) H1N1 to evaluate bioaerosol sampling and detection performance of the platform. Our results show that, within 20 min, aerosolized viruses can be detected using the signal of near-infrared (NIR)-to-NIR nanoprobes. The pretreatment of the sampling pad improved the transfer efficiency of MS2 viruses to the detection zone, compared to an untreated pad. Our platform could detect concentrations as low as 104.294 50% egg infectious dose (EID50)/m3 AIVs collected from a cloacal swab sample (104.838 EID50/mL). Results show that the FFR predicts pitch labelling performance better than traditional measures related to AP (age of music onset, tonal language experience, pitch adjustment and just-noticeable-difference scores). Moreover, the stimulus type used to elicit the FFR (tones or speech) impacts predictive performance in a manner that is consistent with prior research. Additionally, the FFR predicts labelling performance for piano tones better than unfamiliar sine tones. In the multivariate regression analysis, a higher neck VAS score and a larger number of bridge formations of OPLL in the whole spine were significant predictors of adverse outcomes related to cervical spine function. This study was divided into a discovery phase and a replication phase. Subjects in both studies were patients with hypertension, aged 50-70, who underwent two magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sessions and blood extractions over a 4-year follow-up period. In the discovery phase, we screened 1305 proteins in 12 subjects with WMH progression and in 12 matched control subjects. We found that 41 proteins were differentially expressed 13 were upregulated and 28 were downregulated. We subsequently selected three biomarkers for replication in baseline and follow-up samples in 80 subjects with WMH progression and in 80 control subjects. The selected protein candidates for the replication were MMP9 (matrix metalloproteinase-9), which was higher in cases, MET (hepatocyte growth factor receptor) and ASAH2 (neutral ceramidase), which were both lower in cases of WMH progression. Baseline biomarker concentrations did not predict WMH progression. In contrast, patients with WMH progression presented a steeper decline in MET over time. Furthermore, cases showed higher MMP9 and lower ASAH2 levels than controls at the follow-up.       <description>&lt;p&gt;The properties of digestates generated through anaerobic digestion are influenced by interactions between the digester microbial communities, feedstock properties and digester operating conditions. This study investigated the effect of varying initial feedstock carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratios on digestate microbiota and predicted abundance of genes encoding lignocellulolytic activity. The C/N ratio had a significant impact on the digestate microbiome. Feedstocks with intermediate C/N ratio (20-27) (where higher biomethane potential was observed) showed higher relative abundance of archaea compared to feedstocks with C/N ratios at 17 and 34. Within microbial networks, four microbial clusters and eight connector microorganisms changed significantly with the C/N ratio (P  less then  0.05). Feedstocks with C/N  less then  23 were richer in organisms from the family Thermotogaceae and genus Caldicoprobacter and enhanced potential for degradation of maltose, galactomannans, melobiose and lactose. This study provides new insights into how anaerobic digestion conditions relate to the structure and functional potential of digester microbial communities, which may be relevant to both digester performance and subsequent utilization of digestates for composting or amending soil.Telomeres protect chromosomes from degradation during cellular replication. Increasing evidence from wildlife studies suggests that telomere length is positively correlated with survival and health and negatively correlated with disease infection intensity. The recently emerged devil facial tumor disease (DFTD) has led to dramatic and rapid population declines of the Tasmanian devil throughout its geographic range. Here, we tested the hypothesis that susceptibility to DFTD is negatively correlated with telomere length in devils across three populations with different infection histories. Our findings suggest telomere length is correlated with DFTD resistance in three ways. First, devils from a population with the slowest recorded increase in DFTD prevalence (West Pencil Pine) have significantly longer telomeres than those from two populations with rapid and exponential increases in prevalence (Freycinet and Narawantapu). Second, using extensive mark-recapture data obtained from a long-term demographic study, we found that individuals with relatively long telomeres tend to be infected at a significantly later age than those with shorter telomeres. TPCA-1 in vivo Third, a hazard model showed devils with longer telomeres tended to become infected at a lower rate than those with shorter telomeres. This research provides a rare study of telomere length variation and its association with disease in a wildlife population.
