Is Jitsi Better Than Zoom, Cost-Wise? Or Should We Just Stick to Zoom?

I've worked on 10+ client projects across various industries. I've also done numerous experiments with:

Scaling Jitsi instances

Rebranding the UI

Hosting on different server providers

Here's what I've learned about Jitsi vs Zoom — specifically on cost.

The Short Answer
If privacy is your main concern and you want full control of your meetings without a third party (like Zoom) owning your data → Jitsi is the better choice.

But cost-wise? It's hard to beat Zoom. Their massive scale allows them to offer pricing that's tough to compete with.

When Jitsi Makes Sense (Even on Cost)
Despite Zoom's pricing advantage, there are specific cases where Jitsi becomes the better option than Zoom, Webex, or Google Meet:

Legal & Compliance Requirements
If your industry legally requires you to keep data on your own servers (healthcare, finance, government), Jitsi's self-hosting capability is non-negotiable. Zoom can't offer this.

Regional Server Savings
You can find cheap regional server providers (especially in India, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe) where hosting Jitsi costs less than Zoom's per-user fees — especially for teams of 50+.

Custom Features Zoom Doesn't Offer
Need something Zoom doesn't have? With Jitsi, you can build it. I've customized Jitsi for clients who needed:

Custom authentication flows

Branded meeting portals

Specialized recording workflows

Zoom's feature set is fixed. Jitsi's is whatever you code.

My Take
Stick with Zoom if:

You have fewer than 20 users

You don't need custom features

You don't care about data ownership

Go with Jitsi if:

Privacy/legal compliance is critical

You have a developer who can manage self-hosting

You need features Zoom doesn't offer
