Project 1, Week 4, Day 5

Missed a few days this week with no real progress to show. That's the whole reason I started writing my progress down, so as to not quit a project just cause it's not going at the rate it should.

I'm still going to continue to make this project work. There are two major advantages to this approach:

You'll always get a project done
When you choose projects, you'll choose the ones you really want to do. Not just for the novelty of having done a project.

Things are spiraling like it's got a mind of it's own. The webRTC project is not what is started out to be. It's not too hard to use a library to set up a service to send messages or videos or whatever for that matter. And for some reason it does not seem to quench my desire for learning.

A simple google search and you'll find tons of help about how to get a webRTC application up and running. The real challenge is setting up the piping server that facilitates the service.

It's a bit scary but I think that's what I am doing 😅. 4 Weeks in and completed the project last week but that's not enough. I gotta go deeper.

I'll be honest, today was one of those days where you don't want to talk to anyone or do anything.

Had a look into piping server, don't know how I can make it work, or if I should even look into it. Don't want to make that decision today.

Since it's open source maybe I should just try and understand how it works and recreate it. It's gonna drag the project along a longer way but I'm in no hurry. :)

I think I'm going to change the way I've set up the peer and socket. I'm running into a lot of inconsistencies while running them on the server.

A few days ago, I found an article which talked about setting up a piping-server. It's using HTTP and much simpler, lightweight and easy to set up. Either tomorrow or next week, I'm gonna redo the existing code.

I can't believe it, I've done everything on my to-do list from this morning.

The project is live here webrtc.wasworking.today, not really live as it's not working consistently. I'm quite happy with the progress.

Nothing much was done yesterday. I feel I need to list down what needs to be done and move forward. There's a bit of direction lacking.

Todo List:

* Get server up and running on the domain
* Test manually first if it is working as intended
* Check performance
* Move forward from there

I think I need to wrap this up soon. Today was quite a lazy day. Could have a got a lot more done.

Only thing I got done towards the project is that I got the server running. It might be small, but now I can ssh into the server via the domain. I had no idea how to do that before today. :)

Bought myself a domain and a server yesterday. At c0d3 we used a proxy server to have multiple projects running on sub-domains off a single domain. Spent this morning trying to set it up, it has been a while. It's another way to say it hasn't been done :)

Was having trouble deciding on a domain name. So got justdecide.site.

Tomorrow, first thing in the morning I want to go over the set up of the server and see what's the problem. From there it's just a case of running the node server. Exciting.

You learn something new everyday :D. All I wanted was to style the li element so that it would only be as long as the length of the text and also (this is something, i'm yet to figure out) display as a block. Instead ended up figuring out why the chat input was getting submitted even when it was empty. Took a long while for me to realize that I had switched it to a textarea and that I need to trim() the text before I check if it's empty.

Anyway, that's the only thing I managed this evening.

Made some visual improvements to the chat. I wrote it down, that I need to document the updates here, but totally forgot about it.

Made some teeny tiny progress. The chat works, the messages are not displayed yet very beautifully but they are sent across the socket.

To be honest no new changes made today. There are some critical issues which I would like to address though.

Switching video/audio devices
Performance: seems to be taking a while to load up. Need to test it on a server to see how it really works
The chat need to be set up

Will work on it first thing tomorrow to and make that list smaller. :)
