You get the email: "Your technical round will be on CoderPad." Here is what that means in practice, and how to prepare for it in a week.

 The pad in one paragraph

A CoderPad interview is a live coding round in a shared editor called a pad. You and the interviewer open the same pad, usually with a video call running alongside, and they see every keystroke as you type. You write code on the left, press Run, and read the output on the right. It supports 60+ languages, with the best autocomplete for the usual suspects: Python, Java, JavaScript, C++ and C#.

The thing to internalise: they are scoring how you think out loud as much as whether the code passes.

How the 45–60 minutes usually go

Introductions, maybe a few minutes on a project you built.

The problem gets pasted into the pad, or read out.

You ask clarifying questions: input size, edge cases, what to return on empty input.

You describe an approach before coding. Simple first, then better.

You code, narrating as you go.

You run it, test with your own inputs, fix what breaks.

A follow-up arrives: bigger input, new constraint, changed requirement.

Your questions for them.

Two gotchas worth knowing before the day:

If the question comes with a database the interviewer set up (say MySQL), switching the pad to another language loses that database. Stay put.

Some companies switch on CoderPad's built-in AI assistant. Ask what use of it is acceptable before you touch it.

What the interviewer is actually writing down

Narration. Silent typing gives them nothing to score. Say what you are trying and why.

Clarifying first. One minute of questions saves ten minutes solving the wrong problem.

Working before clever. A correct brute force beats an elegant solution that never runs.

Your own tests. Empty input, one element, duplicates, huge values. Choose them yourself.

Complexity. State time and space, and how you would improve them.

Readable code. Good names and small functions help them follow you, and help you debug under pressure.

Taking hints. A nudge is not a failure. Using it well is part of the score.

Question types that keep showing up

Type

Example

What to show

Arrays and strings

Longest substring without repeating characters

Brute force, then a linear pass with a hash map or two pointers

Hash maps and counting

Group anagrams, first unique character

Picking the right structure, and its cost

Trees and graphs

Level-order traversal, number of islands

Recursion or a queue, base cases handled

Sorting and searching

Merge intervals, binary search on the answer

Why sorting first helps, and what it costs

SQL

Top earners per department

Joins and grouping against the real data in the pad

Debugging

Fix a failing function they paste in

Read before you change, test the fix

Practical tasks

A small feature in a multi-file project

Working with existing code instead of rewriting it

 Pad habits that save you

Practise in the free sandbox at app.coderpad.io/sandbox, in the language you will use.

Run constantly: Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on a Mac).

Debug with prints in the output pane rather than reasoning silently.

Don't lean on autocomplete. Know your string, list, map and sort calls cold.

Keep a few test inputs at the bottom of the file and rerun them after every change.

 The one-week plan

Day 1: open the sandbox, pick your language, write and run three small programs.

Days 2–4: two problems a day from the table above, out loud, 30-minute timer each.

Day 5: follow-ups. Take a solved problem and change one constraint.

Day 6: a full mock interview with someone pushing on your answers.

Day 7: rest, reread your notes, prepare two project stories you can go deep on.

The out-loud part is what most people skip and what interviewers weigh most. If you have nobody to run Day 6 with you, an AI mock interview asks one question at a time, waits for your spoken answer and pushes on anything vague.

The full guide, with FAQs, is here: CoderPad interview: what to expect and how to prepare. For how ClearMyRound handles live coding rounds over a video call, see the AI coding interview assistant, and check the rules of your interview before you use any help in it.
