TechFoundHer Bootcamp

It was fortuitous how it all happened. Coding Grace ran a small trial workshop for female founders after the team and their advisors were sharing stories of various founders reaching out individually for advice and help. Months later, I met Mairin.

One catchup coffee meeting in autumn 2022 with Máirín Murray (Tech for Good Dublin), and a chance mention of how frustrated I (and Coding Grace team) was of female founders with no tech backgrounds get taken for a ride, not taken seriously, and lost when it comes to understanding tech and techs, that is seeded an idea for a big event which took place at The Mansion House on May 2nd 2023.

After proposing idea to Coding Grace team that we should collaborate with Máirín to relaunch TechFoundHer as both our goals aligned, that set things in motion.

Máirín has been very active in the startup ecosystem and had a lot of connections with female founders, especially attending female founders events, and I was active around the Irish tech scene. With both of us sharing our networks, we have all bases covered.

A big shout out to Mary Mac Sweeney from Dublin City Council Economic Development who supported us from the get go. They covered the Round Room and sponsorship for some expenses. We officially announced the event that will expects 120 attendees in mid-February.

A big thanks to over 200 attendees on the day and it was opened by the Lord Mayor of Dublin. It was an honour to have it in the Round Room as that was where the first Dáil sat and only 1 woman was present, and here we are, couple hundred strong supporting each other and sharing experiences in the exact same room.

But I want to say thank you to everyone who believed in our event, that there is a problem and we all want to do something to support folks who find it frustrating early in their startup journey.

I was at Big Boost Mondays at Microsoft and as one person mentioned that you need a helping had at the beginning, like that wee hump that can prevent you doing things. Once you know what it's about, that fear goes away.

I can't believe it's over a week and a bit since @micktwomey and I were in Sligo facilitating a Django Workshop mainly aimed at women interested in learning to code.

We had a full house of participants and plenty of coaches to help people out. There were still some niggles to sort out in setting up machine for the workshop.

After welcomes and introductions, including a few words from our sponsor (Sligo Chambers Skillnet) by Geraldine, we got stuck into the workshop from introduction to the internets, command line and introduction to Python.

We believe that Women can make a huge impact on the I.T. industry if given the opportunity and skills!

Nope! This workshop is for beginners. If you have a little knowledge, come along, but this is very much catered for those new to programming and interested in seeing what it is all about.

Your laptop - we expect you to bring your own laptop. This gives you a great opportunity to bring home what you work on and continue coding.

Q. What do I need installed on my laptop before the event?

It will be useful to have Django installed in advance of the day. We will be emailing out information to registered attendees. And we will be hosting a time online before the event so as we can help anyone who needs it, get set up (this is optional).

Q. Is this workshop for women only?

All genders can apply. We encourage a diverse community of programmers. This event is for 18 years + attendees.

This was from a few months ago and I was drafting this post and didn't end up publishing it till now. And I still feel the same, hence sharing it with you or anyone who might be curious about what we are doing at Coding Grace.

Sometimes when you try something, it doesn't really work as planned. The trial for our new Founders workshop worked out well, and we wanted to open it up and decided to run the Tech Basics for Founders diversity-friendly workshop on 2 weekday mornings (08:00 - 10:00).

There were interest in it, but no clicks for signing up.

We cancelled as it was not getting any registrations, we posted event on

For the latter, I was tempted to completely pull Coding Grace from Facebook, but there are some people who do react to some post... future Vicky problem to look at about engaging people in what we do and where to focus our attentions on.

Here we go with this year's entry... 🙌

As Covid-19 restrictions lift, lots of things that were on the back-burner the last two years have popped back into life, including all my YESes to help in various organisations, to give talks and interviews.

My quiet routine felt like it was suddenly disrupted into a mountain of meetings, normally in the evening times as most people (also volunteers) work during the day, and are calling in remotely from different countries.

But...

...it's a good thing! We have been kickstarted to get things going, I have been looking forward to this.

The progression from hopelessness as the world stopped two years ago due to Covid-19 as we stepped into the unknown, frantically finding ourselves (especially tech event organisers), and keeping ourselves occupied through crafting, coding, creative tech projects and many other skills/hobbies picked up during this period.

Last year we breathed a sigh of little relief, and from my side of things, I started and kept running PyLadies Dublin virtual meetups, and are still ongoing this year.

We are the Dublin chapter of PyLadies, a not-for-profit group organising monthly meetups for the local Irish community. We are a diversity-friendly group, and all are welcome to participate at our events.

Other voluntary activities (locally and afar) helps me connect with people outside of home, readying me back into the real world, one step at a time before we all meet in-person once again. My slow re-integration to community IRL is almost turtle-like and I am appreciative people giving me the space and understanding of my hesitancy to pop outside my comfort zone which was once (pre-Covid-19 times) my being, it's what I do... I meet, talk and connect with folks in the community IRL.

For the moment, I'm still either hosting, speaking, collaborating, or attending virtual events.

Do I have more up my sleeve? I'm still a big fan of static site generators. Currently I'm slowly making my way through tutorials on Hugo when I have some spare time. I'm hoping to use this knowledge to redo my https://irishbornchinese.com website, and change it back into... a blog! 😆 This site was created a long time ago and I wanted to bring all the various socmedia content to one central location, like a hub. The Irish born Chinese community (and friends) turns out to be pretty active on Facebook nowadays, hence not much updates on the website itself. So I want to rejuvenate it and focus on the stories of the community here in Ireland, and still have Facebook (and Twitter) to share things of interest.

I'm also taking up a challenge (which I thought would be really quick to finish as it's a refresher)... FreeCodeCamp's JavaScript Algorithms and Data Structures

I'm nearly done but other things get in the way and distract me. 😅

So all in all, it's scary and fantastic that things I'm involved in IRL are coming back. And ofc, this is definitely working with folks from afar, I am so stoked that EuroPython is coming here... to Dublin!!! I've waiting 10 years (plus 2 more years, no thanks to Covid-19), and it's actually happening. I'm trying to help where I can on the organising team, my focus is FinAid, Maker-related/education activities reaching out to the local and European communities, Program, and bit on comms. Anywhere I can help a little when I get a chance.

Diversity in the world of CTOs

Over the last couple of years, I’ve received requests for referrals of non-male devs, especially CTOs as of late.

There’s an extreme shortage of CTOs, especially non-males, and that companies (mainly startups or small corporates) are trying to be diverse, and I’m trying to not be cynical…

👉 Are they looking for token non-male tech hire on c-suite team for investment/funding reasons?

👉 Are they cheaping out on salary? (CTOs are not cheap, they are at the high price bracket for a reason)

I was wondering, how many non-male CTOs do I know (past & present role)? Initial answer, head to my Linkedin app and did a search within my 1st level connections, and I have a broad network. I was shocked that even with my activities and connections in tech, especially around diversity, the CTOs that are non-male on my list are dismal.

🤔 So how did you fare if you checked your LinkedIn profile and look for CTOs (past and present roles) in your 1st level connections? Shocking, isn't it?

I know it's not a surprise but for myself, I didn't think it was going to be bad!

👉 Question… how to find more CTOs?

👉 Another question… how to find potential future CTOs?

If you are looking for a CTO, be prepared to have deep pockets, and if you can’t afford a full-time CTO, have you considered hiring them part-time?
Would that be reasonable and will that fit within your budget, especially if you are a startup or a small company? Are you offering them equity?

Or...

... are you looking for a developer instead? This would be a completely different requirement to a CTO.

a company looking to hire a CTO
a CTO looking for next gig (love to hear from someone who is experienced as a CTO & what is expected of being one)
a senior dev looking into becoming a CTO, what does it take & mean to become one?
what is the bar of entry to become a CTO?

And any helpful advice and information to contribute to the conversation.

But do think about what remuneration you are offering the candidate as potential CTO for your company? Understand the market rate and be realistic and fair.

And most of all, BE HONEST on what you are looking for & offering.
