1. Amount — decide what you can afford to lose, not what you want to invest.

Only use "spare money" you can watch go to zero and still sleep.
Keep your first buy to 1–2% of investable assets (or a few hundred dollars).
Treat the first purchase as tuition, not an investment — its real value is walking the full flow once.

2. Mindset — separate "price moves" from "decisions".

A coin going up doesn't mean you should chase it (that's FOMO).

What "gas" actually means

Gas is a unit of computational work. Every operation on Ethereum consumes gas:

Operation	Gas used (approx.)
Plain ETH transfer	21,000
ERC-20 transfer (e.g. USDT)	45,000 – 65,000
DeFi swap (Uniswap)	100,000 – 150,000+
NFT mint / complex contract	100,000 – 500,000+

Gas used is basically fixed. What fluctuates is the price per gas, quoted in gwei (1 gwei = 0.000000001 ETH).

The formula (after EIP-1559)

Total fee = gas used × (base fee + priority fee)

Base fee — set automatically by network congestion, then burned (removed from supply).
Priority fee (tip) — your "express lane" payment to validators; near zero when the network is quiet.

Example: 21,000 × (10 + 2 gwei) = 252,000 gwei = 0.000252 ETH.

Why fees are so different across chains

Chain	Typical fee (low congestion)
Bitcoin	~$0.5 – $3
Ethereum mainnet	~$0.1 – $1 (DeFi higher)
Solana	< $0.01
BNB Chain	< $0.1
L2s (Arbitrum/Base/Optimism)	< $0.05

"USDT transfers are expensive" almost always means "you're on Ethereum mainnet." Move to BSC, Solana, or an L2 and you save 90%+.

5 ways to pay less

Avoid peak hours — check Etherscan Gas Tracker first.
Switch chains for stablecoins — BSC / Solana / L2.
Do the math on small transfers — if the fee is 10%+ of the amount, wait or switch chains.
Don't max out the fee cap — the unused difference is refunded anyway.
Remember failed transactions still burn gas — don't retry high-slippage swaps during volatility.

The difference isn't skill. It's a trading plan.

Most retail traders don't lose because they can't read a chart. They lose because they enter without a plan and improvise under pressure. Here's the condensed version of a full guide I wrote on building a trading plan you'll actually follow.

A trading plan is not a prediction

The biggest misconception: people think a trading plan means predicting whether price goes up or down. It doesn't.

Analysis answers "where is price likely to go?"
A plan answers "what do I do no matter where it goes?"

A plan is a contingency manual, not a forecast. Its value isn't accuracy — it's that it moves decisions from in the moment to written in advance.

Why trading without a plan gets you harvested

Loss aversion — Kahneman & Tversky's prospect theory shows the pain of a loss is roughly 2× the pleasure of an equal gain. Underwater, your brain goes fight-or-flight: hold-and-hope or panic-sell. Neither is rational.
Overtrading — Barber & Odean's study of 66,465 households found the most active traders earned 11.4%/yr while the market returned 17.9%. No-plan traders are the most frequent traders, because every tick tempts them to "do something."
Decision fatigue — after 8 hours of watching charts, decision quality collapses. Make 90% of decisions before the open; leave only execution for the moment.

The one-page, 7-module template

Fill these in before every trade. If you can't fill one in, don't trade:

7	Journal	Did I log the entry reason + emotional state?

From "I want to buy" to an executable plan (7 steps)

Fix direction — read the higher timeframe first.
Define the signal — replace "feels like it'll pump" with "4H close above X with RSI < 70".
Size the position — risk ≤ 1–2% per trade; position = capital × risk% ÷ stop distance.
Set the stop — before entry, and it doesn't move after.
Set targets — price, partial-exit %, trailing stop.
Write contingencies — wicks, outages, gaps, your own emotional state.
Place orders + log it — stops and targets as conditional orders; the plan in your journal.

How to actually stick to it: IF-THEN + gates

The science is implementation intentions (Gollwitzer, 1999): write a goal as "if situation X, then response Y" and the action fires automatically when X appears — no willpower needed. In trading, that means turning every decision into a conditional order the exchange executes for you.

Three gates keep the plan intact:

Loss cap — down 3% on the day? Stop.
Losing-streak cooldown — 3 stops in a row? Done for the day.
Emotion traffic light — just stopped out or just broke even? No new position.

The 8-step flow
