My Thoughts on the Gauss Math Contest

I want to share some opinions about the Gauss Math Contest. Maybe some of you have kids or students preparing for it, or you are just curious. I am a developer, not a math teacher, but I built a viewer for Gauss past exam.

 What is Gauss Contest?

Gauss is a math contest from the University of Waterloo. It is for Grade 7 and 8 students. The contest itself is not super hard.

So Gauss is the starting point. The goal is to get students interested in math. The first 20 questions are quite easy, only the last 5 are a bit tricky.

 How hard is it?

Simple answer: a bit harder than school math, but much easier than AMC 8.

 Is it valuable?

Two sides:

In Canada: Gauss is the door to the CEMC system. If a student wants to try Pascal, Cayley, Fermat, Euclid later, Gauss is a good start. For applying to University of Waterloo, CEMC contest results are considered.

Internationally: Gauss is not as famous as AMC. If the goal is US top universities, AMC is more helpful.

 Should you take it?

Yes, especially if:

The student is in Grade 7-8 and new to math contests, needs a low-pressure entry.

Studying in Canada, might apply to Waterloo or other Canadian universities.

Want to build confidence.

If the goal is top US engineering schools, Gauss can be a warm-up, but the main line should be AMC.

One practical problem: how to practice past papers?

Official Gauss PDFs are public, but the experience is hard to flip on phone, questions and solutions are separate, and you cannot mark anything when explaining.

That's why I built a Gauss Contest Viewer: I turned 2016-2026 past papers into a web app. You can switch between questions and solutions with one click, and there is a built-in whiteboard for drawing while explaining.

If you have a kid preparing for Gauss, you can give a try.

Summary: Gauss is the entry-level contest in the Canadian CEMC system. It is friendly and good for Grade 7-8. It is recognized in Canada but less known globally.
