If you're building a company in the UAE — SaaS, agency, e-commerce, whatever — Corporate Tax registration is one of those admin tasks that's easy to deprioritize until it becomes a problem. Since it applies even to Free Zone companies (a common source of confusion), it's worth understanding properly rather than assuming it doesn't apply to you.

Quick context

The UAE introduced Corporate Tax for financial years starting from June 2023. Every taxable person — mainland companies, Free Zone entities, branches of foreign companies — needs to register with the Federal Tax Authority (FTA), regardless of whether they end up owing any tax.

The mistake almost every founder makes

"I'm in a Free Zone, so I don't need to register."

This is wrong, and it's the single most common misunderstanding I've seen among founders here. Free Zone companies that qualify for the 0% Qualifying Free Zone Person rate still have to register. The 0% rate applies to what you pay, not whether you register. Skip registration and you're looking at penalties regardless of your actual tax liability.

The registration process, briefly

Registration happens through the FTA's EmaraTax portal:

Create/sign into your EmaraTax account (same login as VAT if you already have it)
Prepare your trade license, signatory's passport/Emirates ID, MOA, and financial year-end date
Fill out the registration form with business activity + legal structure details
Submit and wait for your Corporate Tax Registration Number (TRN) — separate from your VAT TRN
The detail that trips people up: financial year-end

Whatever financial year-end you register determines your filing deadline — returns are due 9 months after year-end. Get this wrong at registration and your entire compliance timeline shifts. If your company runs on a calendar year (Dec 31 year-end), your filing deadline lands on 30 September the following year.

Rates, if you're curious
0% on taxable profit up to AED 375,000
9% on taxable profit above that threshold (only the excess is taxed at 9%, not the whole amount)
Registration ≠ done

This is the part that catches people off guard: registering is just step one. After that, you need to:

Maintain accurate books (this matters more than people expect — messy records make everything downstream harder)
Check if reliefs apply to you (e.g., Small Business Relief for revenue under AED 3M)
Track your filing deadline
File through EmaraTax and pay any tax due

Founders who treat this as a one-time task instead of an ongoing process tend to end up scrambling at filing time.

TL;DR
Register even if you're in a Free Zone
Get your financial year-end right — it sets your deadline
Registration is the start, not the finish line

If you're not sure where your business stands or want help sorting registration + ongoing filing, Credenza Global handles Corporate Tax registration and compliance for UAE businesses — worth a consult if you'd rather not DIY this.
