How I Optimized a Crypto Landing Page to a 100 PageSpeed Score (A Case Study)

Hello DEV Community! I'm Sagor, a freelance developer specializing in the crypto space.

One of the biggest problems I see with new crypto and meme coin websites is that they are incredibly slow. They use heavy images, block rendering, and score very poorly on Google PageSpeed Insights. This kills user trust and hurts SEO.

I recently took on a challenge to fix this. My portfolio site (cryptowebbuild.pages.dev) was scoring around 78 on Mobile. After a few optimizations, here is the result:

Here is the simple, 3-step process I used to get a 91+ score on Mobile and 100 on Desktop.

1. The Problem: Render-Blocking CSS

My site was loading two critical CSS files in the <head>:

Google Fonts
Font Awesome (for icons)

Google PageSpeed reported these as "Render-blocking resources," which was delaying my First Contentful Paint (FCP) by over 3 seconds!

2. The Fix: Deferring Non-Essential CSS

The fix was surprisingly simple. Instead of letting these CSS files block the page load, I deferred them using a simple HTML trick.

Old (Bad) Code:
<link rel="stylesheet" href=".../font-awesome.min.css">
<link rel="stylesheet" href=".../google-fonts.css">

New (Optimized) Code:
<link rel="stylesheet" href=".../font-awesome.min.css" media="print" onload="this.media='all'">
<link rel="stylesheet" href=".../google-fonts.css" media="print" onload="this.media='all'">

This media="print" trick tells the browser to load this CSS "in the background" (as a low-priority print stylesheet) and then apply it to the screen (media='all') only after it has finished loading. This single change fixed my "Render-blocking" issue almost instantly.

3. The LCP Fix: Preloading The Hero Image

My next problem was the Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), which was my main hero image (hero-avatar.webp). The browser was discovering it too late.

I fixed this by telling the browser to "preload" it as early as possible. I added this line inside the <head> tag:

<link rel="preload" href="hero-avatar.webp" as="image">

Conclusion

By simply deferring my CSS and preloading my LCP image, my PageSpeed score jumped from 78 to 91+ on Mobile.

If you're a developer building crypto or landing pages, don't ignore performance. It's the best way to build trust with users and rank higher on Google.
