Launching My First Honeypot on AWS Using T-Pot (Step-by-Step Guide

Introduction

In cybersecurity, understanding how attackers think is just as important as knowing how to defend systems. One powerful way to gain this insight is by deploying a honeypot. A honeypot deliberately exposed system designed to attract and log malicious activity.

In this article, I walk through how I launched my first honeypot server on AWS using Telekom Security’s T-Pot, a popular multi-honeypot platform used by researchers and professionals worldwide.

1. Launch an EC2 instance

To launch your EC2 instance, check my previous articles Running VMs in the cloud:AWS Virtualization for Beginners.
Please make sure your instance type and storage configuration align with the system requirements to launch a honeypot server.

2. Cloning Telekom Security T-Port Repository

  Use the command "git --version" to check if git is installed 
  To clone the Repository, copy the command

" git clone https://github.com/telekom- security/tpotce "

3. Change into the tpotce/ folder

Use the command " ls ", and check if the tpot is already downloaded.
Use the command " cd tpotce " to change the directory to tpotce              
directory
Use the command " ls " to view all the directories and files in the tpotce directory

4. Installing t-pot

  Run the command " ./install.sh" to install t-pot 
  select 'y' to install

  Select " h " for the install type
  Enter your user name
  Select "y" if your username is correct
  Enter your password 
  Confirm your password

5. Change port to 64295

   EC2 Home > Instances (running) > [Your Instance] > Security       Tab > Security Group Link > Edit inbound rules.
  Change the port range from 22 to 64294 
  Change the sources to my IP address
  Add more rules, check the image below

Launching your honeypot

Open your IP address in your web browser

How to Set Up Your First IAM User in 5 Minutes on AWS

Introduction

IAM means Identity and Access Management. It allows you to create separate users for yourself (and your teammates) and give them only the permissions they actually need.

Log in to Your AWS Management Console

Open your web browser and navigate to https://aws.amazon.com/console/
Enter your login details

Navigate to the IAM Dashboard

Use the search bar at the top, then type IAM and press Enter.
You can also navigate to IAM through "Services" then "Security, Identity & Compliance" then click on "IAM"

Go to Users and Add User

Click on "Users" in the left navigation pane
Click on the "Create User" button

Set User Details

Input a name for the new user

Click on the "Provide user access to the AWS Management Console" box.
Click on the "I want to create an IAM user" Box.
Click on the "Custom password" box
Enter a password that matches all the password requirements.

NOTE: When there is someone or a camera close to you, do not click on "Show Password" to prevent Shoulder Surfing

Click on the "Users must create a new password at next sign-in - Recommended "

Click on the "Next" button

Set Permissions for the User

Click on the "Attach policies directly" box
Choose the policies you want to set, and the type of policies, and you can also create your own policies
Click "Next"

Review and Create

Confirm the Username, Access Type and Permission boundary. Click "Create User" if everything is correct.

Download Credentials

You would see your username, password and a sign-in URL and download it for the new user to sign in and be able to change their passwords. Click the "Download CSV" to download the files.

CLICK CLOSE

4.Linking your local repository to remote and push

Creating your GitHub account.

Suppose you don't already have a GitHub account. You would need to create an account. The steps are as follows:

Go to your preferred web browser.
Open https://github.com/join
Enter your email address and enter a password you will remember.
Create an account and enter your username and other required information. ## NOTE: You might need to verify your email using the verification link or an authentication app and make your profile look professional.

Creating a new repository.

After signing in, click the + in the top right, and you will see a new repository
You will fill in

The repository name: my_new_repo
Description (To describe your new repository or maybe the content of the repository): "My first repository"
Select privacy: Private or Public

Creating a Personal Access Token:
got to your settings then Devloper Settings then Personal Access Tokens then Tokens(classic).
Click Generate new token, then name it Then Under scopes, check repository. Then generate and copy it. Then when Git asks for your password, paste that token.

Initialising your project and making your first commit.

Open the terminal using the shortcut Ctrl+`, or you can click on the Terminal, then click on New Terminal.

Check if your terminal has git installed using the command

"git --version"

If you get an error message, then no problem, all you have to do is install git using the command

"sudo apt install git"

Configure Git with your name and email using the command:

""git config --global user.name "Your Name"
git config --global user.email "your.email@example.com""

Initialising git using the command

"git init"

This command would help create an empty git repository in the current directory

Adding the current files you are working on to the empty git repository using the command

"git add "

Committing the file to your local repository using the command

"git commit-m "This is my first commit" "

This command would move the files to the staging area.

4.
Linking your local repository to the remote and pushing.

After you create your first repository, you should get a page similar to this

Copy the command that says "Pushing an existing repository from the command line and paste it into your terminal.

This command connects your GitHub account to your terminal. The other one is for creating a new repo straight from the command line, but we’re not doing that here.

To push your code to your GitHub account, use the command
"git push -u origin main"
You would be asked to enter your Username: Your GitHub username, and Password: That’s the token you created earlier when you created your new repository.

Refresh your GitHub page, and you will find our repository. Then, open the repository, and you will find the file that has your code in it.

That’s it, you've just pushed your first project from your local computer to GitHub using only the terminal. Big thanks to everyone reading these articles. I appreciate you taking your time to follow through.

How I Deployed a StartBootstrap Site to AWS EC2

I've recently learnt how to use a website from Start Bootstrap and deploy it online using AWS EC2. (Read my previous articles to learn how to set up your AWS EC2).In this article, I'll walk you through all the steps I took to complete the task.

What you'll need

StartBootstrap Template : [startbootstrap.com(https://startbootstrap.com/)
AWS EC2 instance
Your local terminal
Linux Packages Nginx

Step1: Launch an EC2 Instance
A. Log in to your AWS Management Console

B. Go to EC2 --> Instance --> Launch Instance --> Choose Ubuntu Server --> Create Key pair --> Launch Instance

Step 2: Startbootstrap
A. Go on, startbootstrap.com (https://startbootstrap.com/)

B. Choose any templates of your choice

C. Download the templates to your local computer

Step 3: Connect the folder you downloaded from startbootstrap using the scp command

"chmod 400 mykey.pem" --> This command changes the file permission
ssh -i "mykey.pem" ubuntu@your-public-ip- Send the zip file to your EC2 instance

Confirm if the zip folder is already on your EC2 instance by changing directory to the folder you created if you create on and using ls to check if the folder is now in your instance.

Step 4: Unzip the folder using Linux packages

Install the package using "sudo apt install zip -y "
Use the command "unzip and Delete the zip file using the command "r*m *"

Step 5: Installing Nginx

Use this command: "Sudo apt install nginx -y" to install nginx

Copy and paste your EC2 public IP addresses to your browser

You should get a welcome page

Step 6: moving your folder from your EC2 instance to the browser

Use the command "sudo mv * /var/www/hmtl/"

After running the command, you can copy and paste or type your public IP address into your browser, and you will see a layout with your own IP address; so, you have completed the task.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a cloud computing platform built by Amazon, and it is the biggest cloud computing platform in the world. Buying expensive physical servers and setting them up manually, and maintaining them is one of the most difficult things to do in the world because of the costs and other reasons, but Amazon Web Services allows us to rent powerful virtual machines in just a few setups and also allows testing and offers loads of services.
It is basically having a data centre right in front of you. I can assure you that before the end of this article, you will be able to set up your virtualisation and start some magic.

The steps are as follows:

1. Creating an AWS account

  First things first, you'll need an account.
  Go on [https://aws.amazon.com]
  Click "Create an AWS account"
  Fill in your details, including email, password, and payment methods (Free Trials are available )

2. Getting access to the AWS Management Console

  After signing up, you'll land in the AWS Management Console. 
  Make use of the search bar to find the different services AWS offers.
  Click on EC2, located at the top, as that is the service we will use for Virtualisation.

3. Launch an EC2 Instance, which is your virtual server

4. Name the Server the name you want to save it as

  Choose an AMI, i.e the operating system (I chose Ubuntu Server)

Pick your instance type

  Create or select a key pair to connect to

  Choose your network settings and configure your storage

Click on "Connect your EC2 instance "

To run locally on your device, follow the instructions

To use the environment on the website, click on connect to and make sure the select the program you want to run.

After clicking connect, the environment would look like this, and you would be ready to begin your magic.

After working, make sure you terminate to avoid getting charged. Click on instance states and select the AMI you want to terminate.

Want to run Windows 11 on your Mac? This step-by-step tutorial shows you how to install Windows 11 on macOS using VMware Fusion. From downloading the tools to final setup, everything's explained in simple terms perfect for students, developers, or anyone switching between operating systems.

INTRODUCTION

Windows is an operating system, and macOS is another. Running Windows on macOS is known as virtualization. This process requires virtualization software like Parallels, VMware, or VirtualBox to run Windows as a guest operating system on your Mac.

By the end of this guide, you’ll be confident in downloading and installing an operating system on your Mac with ease.

Part 1: Downloading VMware Fusion

        .  Open your browser and go to :

https://access.broadcom.com/default/ui/v1/signin/

        . If you don’t already have a Broadcom account, create one

       . Once logged in, navigate to the Product Downloads section and search for VMware Fusion.

       .  Select VMware Fusion Player and click Download.

        .  Once downloaded, open the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to install VMware Fusion on your Mac.

Part 2: Downloading the Windows 11 ISO

       .  Open your browser and go to :

https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11

       .  Scroll to Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO). 

       .  Select Windows 11 (multi-edition ISO) from the dropdown and click Download. 

       .  Choose your preferred language and click Confirm. 

       .  Click the 64-bit Download button to begin the download.

Part 3: Installing Windows 11 with VMware Fusion

        .  Launch VMware Fusion.

        .  Click File > New.

        .  Select "Install from disc or image", then click Continue.

        .  Locate and select the Windows 11 ISO you downloaded.

         .  Choose the version of Windows 11 you want to install (e.g., Windows 11 Pro) AND Choose UEFI Boot (if available)

         .  Follow the prompts to set up the virtual machine:

         .  Allocate at least 4 GB of RAM 

         .  Assign 2 or more CPU cores 

         .  Set disk size (minimum 64 GB recommended)

         .  When prompted, name your virtual machine (e.g., “Windows 11 on Mac”) and choose a location to save it. 

         .  Use a short, clear name without special characters. 

         .  Save it to a location like Documents or an external drive.

         .  Click Save or Finish.

Part4: Post-Installation Setup

         .  Once inside Windows.
         .  Install VMware Tools 
         .  This improves graphics, performance, and input responsiveness

        .  Go to Settings > Windows Update to install any pending updates .

By following this guide, you’ve successfully set up Windows 11 on your macOS system using virtualization. This allows you to take advantage of both operating systems on one device, giving you flexibility for work, school, or personal use. Whether you're running Windows-only applications or testing a dual environment, your Mac is now capable of handling it all.
