10 Essential Tips for AWS Exams: Common Pitfalls to Avoid and Some Sci-fi Quotes

Preparing for an AWS certification exam requires focus, strategy, and a clear understanding of best practices. As a AWS certification mentor and someone who’s been through these exams myself, I’ve seen (and experienced) the common mistakes that can throw even well-prepared candidates off course. But, as Yoda wisely said, “The greatest teacher, failure is.” By learning from these missteps—you can approach your AWS exam with confidence, avoid potential pitfalls, and make the most of your preparation.

I’ve been known to let my inner geek out at public talks and events… I hope I’ve managed to somewhat strike a balance with only some nods and a few quotes on this article compared to other engagements I’ve done at DTX Europe (see cover image).

This guide is tailored for AWS learners at all levels, from those starting out to seasoned professionals aiming for advanced certifications. Here are 10 proven strategies to help you stay focused, manage your time, and prepare you for exam day.

Start with the Exam Guide—Including the Appendix 📖

Overlooking the exam guide is a classic misstep. AWS provides a comprehensive breakdown of topics, weighting, and structure, with an appendix listing services that could appear on the exam. Focus on this list; newer services take time to be added to exams, so use it as a checklist. If you can’t confidently explain differences between services in the same category, go back and study them. “Informed, you must be,” and the exam guide is your roadmap.

Plan Your Time Per Question ⏲️

Time management is key to a successful exam experience. Calculate your time per question based on the exam’s length and question count. For instance, the AWS Solutions Architect Associate exam gives you 130 minutes for 65 questions, allowing about two minutes per question without factoring in review time. By planning ahead, you ensure you can “stay on target” and avoid last-minute rushing.

Use the Flag Option Wisely ⛳️

If you hit a challenging question, flag it and move on. Spending too long on one question can throw off your timing and build frustration. Often, returning to flagged questions later helps provide clarity or lets you view it from a fresh perspective. In my experience, using the flag option strategically helps maintain momentum, preventing any single question from derailing your focus.

Avoid the Trap of Second-Guessing 🤔

Second-guessing can derail even the most prepared exam-takers. Everyone is different, but for me through my own experience, I’ve learned that while reviewing flagged questions can be beneficial, re-checking every answer often creates unnecessary doubt. I limit my review to flagged questions as I tend to overthink. Trust in your initial response—“Your focus determines your reality.”

Practice Exams: Timing and Familiarity ⭐️

Timed practice exams are crucial. They reveal areas that need improvement and help you get comfortable with pacing. In my own experience and in working with others, I’ve found that practice exams build both confidence and focus. Treat them as training; they’re less about scoring perfectly and more about building stamina and familiarity with the format.

Get in the Exam Mindset with a Pre-Exam Mock 💪🏽

On exam day, doing a quick practice test can help get you in the right mindset. Don’t stress over your score—use it as a warm-up to ease into the exam’s style and reduce nerves. This pre-exam mock helps sharpen focus and feels like a reliable warm-up. “Do or do not. There is no try.”

Review Knowledge Gaps with Targeted Practice 🎯

After studying a domain, reinforce it with domain-specific practice questions. This targeted approach strengthens understanding before moving on to the next topic. From personal experience, I’ve seen how focused practice on weaker areas helps build a solid foundation, making it easier to tackle the broader scope of questions on exam day. “Patience you must have.”

Don’t Overthink It—Go for the Simplest Solution 🏁

AWS exams often test for the most practical, cost-effective solution. When faced with complex questions, resist the urge to overthink. I’ve learned that focusing on clear, straightforward solutions is usually the best approach. “Keep your concentration here and now” and avoid unnecessary complexity—AWS rewards practical, effective solutions.

Trust Context Clues and Keywords🕵🏻‍♀️

AWS exam questions frequently contain keywords or clues that guide you toward the right answer. Words like high availability, scalable, or cost-effective can hint at the solution. Training yourself to recognize these clues helps streamline your reasoning and saves valuable time. “Your eyes can deceive you; don’t trust them”—focus on the words that matter.

Don’t Be a Rescheduler—Go for It! 🙈

Rescheduling is tempting, but if you are mocking well in practice exams, go for it! I’ve seen this in myself and others, waiting for the perfect moment rarely leads to progress. I’ve taken and cleared over a dozen technical exams in the past 4 years (only 2 AWS ones so far) and I can tell you I never felt ready, but I always was. Trust your preparation and go for it. Each exam is a learning opportunity.

Commit to Continuous Learning and Growth 📚

AWS exams are challenging, but they’re manageable with the right strategies. Each test offers an opportunity to deepen your understanding and refine your approach. By applying these tips, you’ll approach your exam with greater confidence, avoid common mistakes, and continue developing skills that will serve you throughout your cloud journey. Embrace each step and remember, “Your focus determines your reality”—stay steady, and you’ll find success on the path to AWS mastery.

Balancing AWS Certification and Parenting: A Guide for Busy Professionals

Three years ago, I started to dive deep into AWS certification. It was intense, rewarding, and—in true parent fashion—juggled around family life with little ones. Today, with renewed focus I’m diving back into AWS. For all the busy parents, carers, and professionals who are short on time and ”occasionally” interrupted, here are the tips and strategies that have worked for me.

Check out is funny you tube short which I used to promote this article on Linkedin

Define and Protect Your Study Space 🖥️

Creating a dedicated study space can make a huge difference especially if you’re working from home. But let’s be real—not everyone has an extra room just for work or studying, and sometimes, we make do with what we have. For me, setting up a study zone can mean anything from tidying my desk and laying out notes, to using the dining table, or even setting up one of those pop-up tables on the bed or my lap. Each space serves as a fresh option to get into “study mode.”

Sometimes, I even take my notes to the library or the gym cafe (thanks to their kids’ club!). Here’s the funny thing: I’d give myself two options—get in a workout or study—and somehow, I’d be at my most productive when sitting at the gym cafe!

The takeaway? It’s not about having the “perfect” study space but about using what you have. Switching up locations can keep studying fresh and is a way to adapt to life’s rhythms rather than force an ideal setup. The key is finding your focus, wherever it might be.

Involve the Kids (Yes, Really!) 👶👧

Kids can be the most curious (and surprising) study companions. When I first studied for AWS, one of my kids was in the “Why?” phase. I realized their questions actually helped me learn. Explaining cloud computing to a preschooler pushed me to simplify and articulate concepts in ways I wouldn’t have otherwise.

To make it even more interactive, my younger kid loved to sit next to me and “highlighted” my notes (with questionable accuracy, but enthusiasm counts). My older kid quizzed me, asking questions like game show hosts, and even let me use a “50/50” when I got stumped. Sure, it wasn’t my proudest mom moment sneaking in one AirPod listening to AWS Power Hour on Twitch during their 10th rewatch of The Emoji Movie, but sometimes you just make it work.

Use the Productivity Apps for Focus 🌳

For anyone who’s prone to distraction, the Forest app or others like it is a game-changer. It lets you grow a virtual tree for each focused session you complete—and if you stray from your task (or your phone), the tree withers. Reflecting on my “forest” of sessions at the end of a week is surprisingly motivating, especially after a busy week. Plus, it’s a visual reminder that every study session, no matter how short, adds up over time.

Take Advantage of “In-Between” Moments ⏱️

Life with kids and other responsibilities means uninterrupted study blocks are rare. So I make the most of those in-between times: waiting for the bus, for the oven to finish, or for school pick up. Sometimes, I’ll answer a few mock exam questions on my phone or listen to a podcast. These small blocks of time scattered throughout the day can add up to real progress. It’s all about maximizing the little pockets of time that might otherwise slip by.

Switch Up Your Study Materials 🎬

Variety keeps learning engaging. When screen fatigue sets in, I turn to books for an offline break (yes, actual pages!). Reading away from the screen gives my mind and eyes a much-needed reset. For interactive learning, Udemy courses are on the app on my phone - I cast them to the TV, follow along with hands-on exercises on my laptop, and switch rooms to keep things interesting. Changing the setting or material type can be refreshing, especially on days when focus feels hard to come by.

Organization 📝

Organization isn’t just about structure; it’s also about finding joy in the process. For me, that means keeping a binder with color-coded notes, jotting down key concepts and takeaways in different colors. The process of writing and color-coding notes helps reinforce the material. Plus, there’s something satisfying about looking back through a rainbow of study notes, tracking progress and insights along the way. For me, in the past (not during the exam of course!) I’ve used the study notes and temporarily wall papered the wall behind my desk with any key topics, so it was a constant reminder. I got this tip from a friend at the AWS Academy, and it hopefully explains the cover photo of another article I’ve written.

Make Technology Work for You (and Use Your Phone Strategically) 📲

Oddly enough, my phone has become my go-to study tool. Whether it’s jotting down notes or drafting AWS community builder applications, using my phone feels accessible. There’s something psychologically “lighter” about it compared to opening up my laptop—it’s quicker, more approachable, and makes it easier to fit studying into everyday moments. I also think of my phone as a tool for quick wins, which makes it feel less overwhelming than more “official” study sessions on my computer.

Embrace Short, Focused Study Blocks 🔍

With a busy household, finding uninterrupted time can be tricky. Rather than forcing long study blocks, I lean into shorter bursts—often just 15-20 minutes. I focus deeply, set a specific goal (like completing a lab or review session), and knock it out. These micro-sessions add up and help me stay consistent, even when time is tight.

Reflect on Progress Regularly (and Celebrate with a Winning Cup) 🏆

Taking a moment to look back on what you’ve achieved, no matter how small, is crucial for staying motivated. Reflecting weekly or monthly reminds me of how far I’ve come, whether it’s a completed mock exam or a day when I carved out a solid hour of study. And to make these wins even sweeter, I have a “winning cup”: a large, two-hand-required Le Creuset mug that’s reserved exclusively for warm drinks (because, as any parent or carer knows, a warm drink is a rare treat).

Whether it’s a career milestone like a promotion, a study breakthrough, or even a perfect dishwasher day, I savour those moments with my winning cup in hand. It’s my little ritual to honor achievements both big and small, reminding me that every victory counts.

The takeaway? Celebrating wins, no matter the size, keeps momentum going and adds a bit of joy.

Know Your Learning Style 🎓

One of the best things you can do to maximize your study time is to know your learning style. Everyone processes information differently, and understanding what works best for you can make your study sessions more efficient and enjoyable. Here are a few common learning styles—and remember, you might be a mix of these!

• Visual Learners thrive on diagrams, infographics, and visual aids. If this sounds like you, try sketching AWS architectures or using color-coded notes to reinforce concepts.
• Auditory Learners do best when they can hear and discuss information. Listening to AWS podcasts or explaining topics out loud (even to a toddler!) can make complex ideas stick.
• Reading/Writing Learners love reading text and taking notes. If you’re in this category, keeping a binder with detailed, organized notes can be a powerful tool.
• Kinesthetic Learners learn by doing. Hands-on labs, interactive exercises, and real-world practice are ideal for these learners. Spending time in the AWS console and experimenting will reinforce concepts naturally.

Most people are a blend of these styles, and figuring out your personal combination can help you tailor your approach. For example, I like combining color-coded notes (visual) with interactive labs (kinesthetic) to make sure I’m covering all angles. Experimenting with different methods and finding your ideal mix will make studying feel more natural and less like a chore.

Finally - Hold On to Your “Why” 🎯

I’ve mentioned previously that any parent of a three-year-old knows, “Why?” is a question that never gets old (for them, at least!). When I first started studying AWS, my child’s endless “Why?” actually became a surprisingly valuable tool. Trying to answer their questions forced me to dig deeper, clarify my own understanding, and stay engaged.

Beyond that, it reminded me of my own why. Why was I pursuing AWS certification in the first place? Was it to expand my career, build new skills, or create more opportunities? For me, it’s a mix of all of these, but most importantly, it’s about building a better future for my family. Holding onto this personal “why” has kept me going, especially during late nights and early mornings when motivation wanes.

If you’re on a similar journey, take a moment to reconnect with your own driver. Maybe it’s professional growth, curiosity, or providing for loved ones. Whatever your “why,” let it ground you, inspire you, and keep you moving forward.

AWS certification is a big, sometimes daunting, goal. Just remember to you keep your “why” in sight—just like a curious three-year-old.

Becoming an AWS Community Builder offers a unique opportunity to connect, grow, and make a positive impact within the AWS community. The application process opens once a year in January for new applicants, with a separate re-application period for current Builders a few months later. Since it’s a competitive process, planning ahead and showcasing your unique strengths and consistent contributions is key.

Here are seven essential strategies to help you create a standout application—whether you’re a first-time applicant or a returning AWS Community Builder.

Plan Ahead: Reflect on Your Goals and Gather Highlights

Preparing early is crucial, as the application window is limited. Start by reflecting on why you want to become (or remain) an AWS Community Builder and gather examples of your most meaningful contributions. List projects, initiatives, and engagements that best showcase your skills, consistency, and commitment to AWS.

If you’re uncertain about where to start, consider discussing your contributions with a mentor, colleague, or friend who knows your work well. Often, we don’t fully recognize our own accomplishments, and hearing from someone else can offer a fresh perspective.

Showcase Your Specialty and Consistent Engagement

AWS Community Builders bring a variety of skills to the program. Highlight your unique specialty—whether it’s serverless, machine learning, infrastructure, or data analytics—and demonstrate your expertise in that area. Consistency is also key: avoid contributing only in the month leading up to the application window. Year-round engagement, such as participating in online forums or sharing knowledge, demonstrates an ongoing commitment to the AWS community.

Use the STAR Method to Highlight Your Impact

When describing your accomplishments, consider using the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, and Result. This framework keeps your examples clear, focused, and impactful, helping AWS evaluators understand your unique contributions.

For instance:

Situation: Describe the event or challenge.
Task: Explain your role or objective.
Action: Detail the steps you took.
Result: Highlight the impact—such as positive feedback, engagement stats, or knowledge shared.

Adding specific metrics, such as engagement numbers, and including quotes or feedback you’ve received can strengthen your examples, making them even more compelling.

Include a Strong Content Link: Quality Over Quantity

In previous years AWS Community Builders application, you can include only one link to showcase your content, so choose wisely. Select a piece that best represents your knowledge and expertise, such as a blog post, tutorial, or video that addresses a common challenge, explains a complex topic, or adds unique value. Make sure it aligns with your specialty and demonstrates your ability to communicate technical concepts effectively.

Tip: Make sure the content you include is publicly available. AWS values contributions that are accessible to the community, so ensure your link leads to content others can view, share, and learn from.

Demonstrate Public Community Involvement and Collaboration

The AWS Community Builders program emphasizes collaboration and public community involvement. Highlight your engagement in AWS forums, local meetups, events, or online communities. Focus not just on individual achievements but also on how you’ve collaborated with others and fostered a sense of community. For example, have you helped answer questions on AWS forums? Spoken at an event? Contributed to open-source projects?

If you’re a returning applicant, document how you’ve built on past experiences. Each year, Builders are expected to increase their impact, so if you’ve previously organized events or collaborated on projects, highlight how you’ve expanded those efforts. Showing growth demonstrates commitment to the AWS community and a willingness to keep pushing the community forward and also how you are benefitting from being in the program.

Clarify Your Motivation and Vision for the Program

Have you thought about your goals and a vision for how you’ll contribute to AWS community? How you will benefit from being in the program? Take time to explain why you want to join (or stay in) the program, what you hope to achieve, and how you’ll give back.

If you’re reapplying, your application is about your achievements over the past year and outlines what you hope to accomplish next. This shows not only your personal commitment to growth but also your dedication to the broader AWS community.

If at First You Don’t Succeed, Learn and Try Again

Applying for the AWS Community Builders program is competitive. If you’re not selected, view it as a chance to learn. Consistent engagement and growth over time show your dedication, so don’t be discouraged by a setback.

As a 3 year AWS Community Builder, I remind myself each year that re-application is a new opportunity to reflect on my growth. To keep contributing, continue refining your skills, and build on your experiences.

If you’re ready to make an impact in the AWS community, becoming an AWS Community Builder is a fantastic opportunity to connect, contribute, and grow. But standing out in the application process requires more than just listing your skills—it’s about showcasing your unique contributions, ongoing engagement, and commitment to helping others.

Here are additional ways to set yourself apart and areas to emphasise:

Problem Solver: Showcase unique solutions to real-world AWS challenges, highlighting your creative and practical problem-solving skills.

Thought Leadership: Share insights on AWS trends and best practices regularly, positioning yourself as a guide for the community.

*Mentorship and Education: * Emphasize any teaching, mentoring, or workshop experiences that help others grow in their AWS skills.

Niche Expertise: Develop a deeper specialty within your area (e.g., serverless security), showing AWS that you’re an expert in a specific aspect of the platform.

Open-Source Contributions: Highlight any AWS-related contributions to GitHub or open-source projects, showing your commitment to hands-on learning and community support.

Key Metrics: Include numbers to demonstrate your reach (e.g., content views, event attendees), offering concrete proof of your community impact.

Cross-Platform Engagement: Mention involvement across AWS communities (user groups, re:Post, forums) to show broad, consistent engagement.

Authentic Stories: Share personal stories about your AWS journey, including challenges overcome, to demonstrate resilience and a commitment to learning.

Putting It All into Action

Applying to the AWS Community Builders program is about showcasing your unique contributions and commitment to the AWS community. Plan ahead, focus on quality and consistency, and align your efforts with your area of expertise. Each application or re-application is part of a journey, and success comes from a commitment to learning, growth, and perseverance.

If you’re passionate about AWS, keep building, keep sharing, and keep applying and stay AWSome. Each step moves you closer to joining a vibrant community of Builders dedicated to advancing the AWS community. Good luck!
