Well, this is pretty damn cool.

DaemonCore Academy is officially available through the Microsoft Store.

There is something slightly surreal about writing that sentence.

DaemonCore Academy started with a group of developers, hackers, security people, and professional rabbit-hole explorers who shared a simple belief:

Cybersecurity education should be accessible to everyone.

No subscription required to start learning.

No credit card required to unlock the next lesson.

No artificial wall placed between someone who wants to learn and the knowledge they are trying to reach.

Just download it and learn.

And now you can download DaemonCore Academy directly through the Microsoft Store.

Why This Matters to Us

Getting into the Store is cool.

The little Microsoft badge is cool.

Seeing DaemonCore sitting beside established cybersecurity and education software is really cool.

But that is not the important part.

Distribution is.

Every barrier between a curious person and technical education costs us a potential engineer, defender, researcher, developer, or hacker.

Maybe somebody searches the Microsoft Store for cybersecurity because they have absolutely no idea where else to begin.

Maybe they are 16.

Maybe they are 36.

Maybe they have never opened a terminal.

Maybe they have been running Linux since dial-up sounded like two robots being murdered over a telephone line.

It does not matter.

They find DaemonCore Academy.

They install it.

And they start.

That is the entire point.

We Are Not Trying to Build Another Video Course

There are already approximately nine billion cybersecurity courses on the Internet.

The world does not desperately need another collection of videos explaining what an IP address is.

We wanted something different.

DaemonCore Academy is built around doing.

The Academy now spans 127 practical lessons, 70 lab conditions, eight learning pathways, and eight training ranges, with environments and workflows designed to make students interact with systems rather than merely hear someone describe them.

Enumeration.

Networking.

Web security.

Infrastructure.

Reconnaissance.

Evidence.

Validation.

Reporting.

Operator workflows.

And the wonderfully educational experience of typing something into a terminal, watching everything explode, and figuring out exactly why.

Because that last part teaches you more than people admit.

The Machine Does Not Give Participation Trophies

One philosophy keeps showing up throughout DaemonCore:

Understanding beats memorization.

You can memorize 500 cybersecurity definitions.

The machine does not care.

Drop someone into an unfamiliar environment and suddenly the interesting questions begin.

What is this system?

What is exposed?

What services are running?

What trusts what?

What looks wrong?

What changed?

What should I investigate next?

And most importantly:

Why?

That transition from knowing terminology to developing technical intuition is where things get interesting.

That is what we want to teach.

From Independent Project to Microsoft Store

There is also something beautifully weird about an independent group of hackers building a free cybersecurity academy and eventually seeing it distributed through Microsoft.

We did not build DaemonCore because the world desperately needed another cybersecurity brand.

We built it because we were frustrated.

We were frustrated watching knowledge get chopped into subscription tiers.

We were frustrated watching practical subjects become passive content.

We were frustrated seeing people genuinely hungry to learn but unable to justify another $30, $50, or $100 every month just to continue exploring something they might love.

So we decided to build the thing we wanted to exist.

Then we kept building.

And kept building.

And apparently nobody remembered to tell us when to stop.

Now DaemonCore Academy is sitting in the Microsoft Store.

That feels like progress.

Free Still Means Free

Getting into a major distribution platform does not change the mission.

DaemonCore Academy is free.

We have professional software and commercial tools elsewhere in the DaemonCore ecosystem because servers, infrastructure, development, and caffeine stubbornly refuse to become free.

But the Academy itself exists for a different reason.

We want someone with curiosity and a computer to have somewhere to begin.

No matter where they came from.

No matter what school they attended.

No matter how much money is sitting in their bank account.

Knowledge should move.

Hackers have understood that for decades.

Someone learns something.

Someone documents it.

Someone shares it.

Someone else takes it further.

That cycle built an enormous part of the culture we came from.

We intend to keep it moving.

So... Microsoft Store.

That still feels strange to type.

What began as an idea about making practical cybersecurity education freely accessible now has another doorway.

A pretty enormous doorway, actually.

DaemonCore Academy: Cybersecurity Education Should Not Have a Cover Charge

We built DaemonCore Academy around a fairly radical idea.

Education should be free.

Not "free for seven days."

Not "free until Lesson 4."

Not "free, but the labs require Pro."

Not "free, but enter your credit card first."

Actually free.

DaemonCore Academy is being built by a group of developers, hackers, security people, infrastructure nerds, and lifelong technology addicts who share one belief: your ability to learn should not be determined by how much money you have.

Somewhere along the way, technical education became an industry obsessed with subscriptions, certifications, upsells, artificial progression systems, and increasingly expensive access to knowledge.

We think that sucks.

We Are Hackers

And we mean that in the original sense of the word.

Hackers are curious.

We take things apart because we need to understand why they work.

We stare at packets that nobody asked us to inspect.

We spin up a machine at 2:00 AM because something does not make sense and apparently sleeping would be far too reasonable.

We read documentation. We break configurations. We rebuild them. We find something interesting, follow it down a rabbit hole, accidentally discover three other rabbit holes, and somehow emerge six hours later knowing considerably more than we intended.

That mentality built much of the technology people use every day.

And historically, hackers learned from other hackers.

Someone discovered something.

They documented it.

They shared it.

Someone else improved it.

Knowledge moved.

That is the culture we want DaemonCore Academy to contribute to.

Stop Teaching People to Memorize Cybersecurity

We do not want students memorizing terminology long enough to pass a quiz.

We want them developing instincts.

There is an enormous difference between knowing what reconnaissance means and sitting in front of an unfamiliar system thinking:

Where would I start?

What is exposed?

What is running?

What should not be running?

What changed?

What can communicate with what?

What assumptions did the developer make?

What happens if that assumption is wrong?

Where would an attacker look next?

That way of thinking cannot be developed by watching somebody else click through a prerecorded demonstration.

You develop it by doing the work.

So DaemonCore Academy focuses heavily on practical learning, operator workflows, labs, environments, tooling, investigation, enumeration, validation, evidence, reporting, and understanding what the machine is actually telling you.

We want people touching the keyboard.

There Is No Secret Knowledge

This industry occasionally treats cybersecurity knowledge like some ancient scroll guarded by a wizard wearing a CISSP hoodie.

It is not.

The protocols are documented.

The vulnerabilities are documented.

The operating systems can be studied.

The tools can be downloaded.

The research exists.

The missing ingredient for a lot of people is simply someone showing them where to begin and giving them somewhere to practice.

That should not require hundreds or thousands of dollars.

A teenager sitting in a bedroom with an old laptop should be able to start learning.

Someone working a miserable job who wants a different career should be able to start learning.

A college student who cannot afford another subscription should be able to start learning.

Someone who has never touched Linux should be able to start learning.

Someone who already knows Linux and wants to go significantly deeper should have somewhere to continue.

Money should not be the thing standing between curiosity and knowledge.

We Are Not Building a Gate. We Are Building a Door.

DaemonCore Academy currently contains 127 practical lessons, 70 lab conditions, eight pathways, and eight training ranges, with more being developed.

The Academy itself is free.

That is not a launch gimmick.

That is not customer acquisition copy somebody cooked up during a marketing meeting.

It is part of the philosophy behind the project.

We can build commercial tools. We can build professional operator software. We can build products organizations pay for.

But the educational foundation does not need to become another toll booth.

If DaemonCore grows, we want the free Academy to grow with it.

More lessons.

More ranges.

More environments.

More disciplines.

More contributors.

More opportunities for somebody, somewhere, to discover that they are actually really damn good at this.

Hackers Share Knowledge

There is another reason we are doing this.

Cybersecurity has a pipeline problem.

Companies want experienced security professionals, but beginners need somewhere to acquire experience. Schools cannot always keep curriculum synchronized with an industry that changes practically every time somebody pushes a bad configuration into production.

Meanwhile, thousands of intelligent people are fascinated by security but have absolutely no idea how to cross the enormous distance between:

I want to learn cybersecurity.

and

Give me the target. I know how to begin.

We want to help close that distance.

Not by making cybersecurity easier.

By making learning it more accessible.

There is a difference.

We are not interested in watering the subject down. If something is complicated, we should teach why it is complicated.

Students deserve that respect.

The Terminal Does Not Care Who You Are

This might be our favorite thing about technology.

The terminal does not care about your résumé.

It does not care where you went to school.

It does not care whether your laptop cost $3,000 or you bought it used for $180.

It does not care whether you learned networking from a professor, a book, documentation, a friend, or by repeatedly destroying your home lab until DHCP finally surrendered.

The machine asks one question:

Do you understand what you are doing?

That is beautifully unforgiving.

And beautifully fair.

This Is Bigger Than Software

DaemonCore Academy is an application, but we do not want it to remain merely an application.

We want it to become a community of people who believe technical knowledge becomes more valuable when it moves.

Teach somebody what you know.

Write the walkthrough.

Explain the weird behavior you discovered.

Help the beginner asking the question you asked five years ago.

Build something.

Break something you are authorized to break.

Figure out why it broke.

Document it.

Then teach somebody else.

That cycle is how hackers have educated one another for decades.

We are simply building another place for that cycle to happen.

We do not know exactly how large this becomes.

That is part of the fun.

But we know what we want to protect as it grows:

Curiosity over credentials.

Understanding over memorization.

Practice over passive consumption.

Community over gatekeeping.

Access over artificial scarcity.

And most importantly:

Education over monetization.

There are enough locked doors on the Internet.

We would rather teach people how doors work.
