I spent way too long convincing myself I couldn't switch because I'd be "throwing away" years of experience. Turns out, nothing actually gets wasted.

The debugging mindset? Transferred. The ability to read messy documentation? Transferred. The patience of sitting through endless meetings? Unfortunately, also transferred.

What did feel new was the discomfort of being a beginner again. No shame in admitting it — going from being the go-to person to the one asking all the questions is humbling. But that phase doesn't last as long as you think it will.

A few things that helped me:

Your past experience is scaffolding, not baggage. You're not starting from zero. You're starting from a different angle.

The imposter syndrome will show up. Let it ramble, then get back to learning anyway.

Nobody expects you to know everything on day one. You'd be surprised how forgiving people are when you're genuinely curious and putting in the effort.

The right time is a lie. There's never a perfect moment to leap. Sometimes you just have to trust that future-you will figure it out.
