What I Built

TrashCoin, a gamified recycling dApp on the Stellar network that incentivizes users to recycle and contribute to a cleaner environment. Users earn Trashcoin (TRASH) for verified recycling activities, compete on leaderboards, and potentially earn rewards from partnered businesses.

At Trashcoin, Our mission is to create a global waste recycling system that benefits the planet and the people. Our Vision is to ensure waste is reduced to the barest minimum by Leveraging technology to create a circular economy while lifting communities out of poverty

TRASHCOIN is a digital recycling technology that improves citizen engagement in recycling, to drive operational efficiencies and increase transparency in the supply chain. With our DApp, Users can search for the closest recycling or collection station/hub, take their waste to them, and get paid. Users have the option to exchange their earnings for cash, for mobile Airtime/Data, pay for electricity and Cable TV subscriptions, or pay for University Entrance examination fees like JAMB and WAEC fees.

Recycling companies can register their business locations on our web platform and be seen by users who live nearby.

In Nigeria, there are no proper Waste Management Systems and waste from people’s home usually look like this:

When it rains, the streets looks like above, clogged drainages that breeds mosquitoes, which causes malaria and kills more people than HIV.

So, we are left at the mercy of the local waste collectors, but with them we have to wait for so long and pay heavily for our waste to be taken out.

We were inspired to create TrashCoin to address the growing issue of waste management in Nigeria and promote environmentally friendly practices. Leveraging the power of Stellar smart contracts and gamification elements,

TrashCoin aims to:

Motivate Recycling: Users earn TRASH for verified recycling, creating a direct incentive to recycle more.
Increase Engagement: Gamification through leaderboards and potential rewards from partnered businesses keeps users motivated.
Transparency and Trust: The Stellar blockchain ensures a transparent and immutable record of all recycling activity.
Expand the Ecosystem: Partnering with waste management companies and NGOs can incentivize large-scale recycling initiatives.
Smart Contract Integration:
We designed a smart contract to manage core functionalities:
Barcode Verification: The contract validates scanned barcodes against a database of recyclable items.
TRASH Reward System: The contract securely awards TRASH tokens to user wallets based on successful verification.
Leaderboard Management: (Optional) The contract can maintain leaderboard data, reflecting users' recycling activity.
Certificate Generation as a reward for eliminating carbon footprint.

Challenges and Learnings:
Building a dApp involved learning about Stellar smart contracts, integrating with barcode scanning libraries (for mobile apps), and designing engaging game mechanics. While this project is a prototype, it demonstrates the potential of blockchain technology to create positive environmental impact.

This submission is intended for the Super Sustainable Prize Category. TrashCoin directly promotes real-world positive impact by encouraging recycling and creating a transparent record of recycling activity on the blockchain.

Tokenization of Recyclables:
Process: Implement a token system where each plastic bottle recycled is recorded on the blockchain as a unique token. Users receive these tokens, which can be exchanged for rewards like cash, airtime, data, or fees.
Benefit: Ensures transparent and immutable records of every transaction, preventing fraud and ensuring users are properly rewarded for their contributions.
Smart Contracts for Transactions:
Process: Use smart contracts to automate payments to users, collectors, and recycling companies when certain conditions are met (e.g., verification of bottle collection).
Benefit: Increases efficiency and reduces the need for intermediaries, ensuring prompt and secure payments.
Supply Chain Transparency:
Process: Track the journey of plastic bottles from collection points to recycling facilities using blockchain. Each step can be logged on the blockchain, creating a transparent supply chain.
Benefit: Provides real-time visibility and accountability in the recycling process, building trust among stakeholders.
Decentralized Identity Management:
Process: Create decentralized identities for users, collectors, and recycling companies. These identities can be used to verify and authenticate transactions on the platform.
Benefit: Enhances security and privacy for all participants, reducing the risk of identity theft and fraud.
