      <title>My Journey to Becoming Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate</title>

  Introduction: Who I Am and Why This Mattered
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;For most of my professional career in Information Technology, my focus has been on automation, cloud platforms and Azure-centric infrastructures. With the explosion of modern analytics over the past few years (i.e., big data), I became very interested in data engineering. Despite scripting and automating workflows successfully, I had no formal proof that I could handle an entire data pipeline from start to finish.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;That's when I decided to pursue this credential for myself. I had heard mixed opinions from others about the Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate Exam  some said it was worthwhile; others said it was mostly theoretical in base requirements and had limited value. After several months of preparation utilizing hands-on experience along with plenty of certification exam quizzes, I passed my exam.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The certification details I researched directly from Databricks provided the best idea of what I needed in order to succeed. This certification exam is designed to evaluate a candidate's ability to use the Databricks Lakehouse Platform to perform basic functions associated with data engineering:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Workspace usage&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Utilizing Spark SQL and/or PySpark for ETL&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Creating data pipelines&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Implementing job orchestration&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Applying data governance depending on the level of access&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The certification requires that you take the exam (45 multiple-choice questions) in a supervised environment (either through proctors or through a test center) and allows you to choose whether to take it through a virtual or physical test location. Testing candidates must complete their exams within 90 minutes, and the minimum passing score is no less than 70 percent overall (calculated based on both your overall and subject separate scores). The typical exam fee is approximately $200 USD (in the United States) but may vary by location.&lt;/p&gt;

I underestimated the scenario-based nature of the actual exam questions, which are designed not just to test if you know a definition but to see if you can apply those definitions within real work scenarios.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The first few weeks of study felt completely unstructured. I would sit down, open up a document, read for an hour, then close the document with no measure of how I was progressing. There were no measurable goals established during this period.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;By week four, I had transitioned my efforts to primarily focus on hands-on practice. Developing small ETL jobs in Databricks Community Edition, developing PySpark jobs, optimizing simple pipelines, and tracking performance of Spark Sessions were key, as the actual test measures comprehension of working through typical business processes on real platforms, not isolated facts.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Timed regular quiz sessions were a large portion of my preparation and were instrumental to my confidence level. I was able to replicate the 90-minute test environment by using structured quizzes, so I could assess both my accuracy and speed. As I progressed through these quizzes, I initially felt very confident about my ability to answer questions correctly. However, the reality of answering questions under time constraints was very different, particularly when multiple parts of questions appeared in the reasoning section of the exam.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Through the use of certification exam quizzes, I was able to expose myself to the same format of questions I would see on the exam, which helped me develop the mental stamina needed and pace myself properly.&lt;/p&gt;

One extra requirement prior to taking my exam was ensuring I could fulfill online proctor requirements (i.e., technical requirements of webcam and stable internet connection), which added some extra anxiety before test day.&lt;/p&gt;

  What Happened on Test Day
&lt;/h2&gt;

&lt;p&gt;During my examination, the first thing that struck me was how scenario-based the questions were. For example, a question about simple Spark SQL syntax would often be followed by an intermediate step failure question or a question about modifying workflows based on event triggers. These questions require an understanding of how Databricks tools behave in an actual work environment, not just memorization.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The study plan I created focusing on self practice and timed quizzes—meant the challenging parts were not as scary as I thought they would be. I had approximately 10-15 minutes left after finishing, so I reviewed my answers and then submitted.&lt;/p&gt;

In India, data engineers earn well too, with average salaries typically ranging from ₹9 lakh to ₹15 lakh per year, depending on experience. In the UK and other European countries, median salaries for data engineers vary widely based on industry demand, with starting salaries typically around £40K or greater. Being Databricks certified has positively impacted my ability to discuss prospects with recruiters, and companies have been specifically asking about my Databricks skills when looking for data engineers.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;During preparation, I evaluated several credible alternatives to deepen my understanding and test readiness. None of these are endorsements; they are simply practical resources other candidates use.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;These materials have been created and updated by the platform provider and are usually included in the official exam guide as recommended materials. The content format is very similar to that of the actual exams, providing a high degree of alignment. The downside is that official resources tend to be more expensive than unofficial ones and do not necessarily provide progress tracking dashboard functionality unless you subscribe to the academy.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;/h3&gt;

&lt;p&gt;A number of courses are available on Udemy that include practice exams and study guides for the Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate. One course offers six complete practice exams with in-depth explanations of each question. This provides exposure to different domains and question variations, allowing familiarity with the exam format beyond actual exam materials. These courses generally provide lifetime access, which is ideal for reviewing topics later.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;These courses typically provide a wide variety of questions and explanations; however, they generally do not include performance tracking and analytics on topics provided by dedicated certification quiz platforms.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Whizlabs offers a series of practice questions said to align with the Databricks exam. People report finding these resources helpful when studying for the certification exam, as they improve understanding of Spark SQL principles and data engineering principles. Similar to Udemy, they do not provide a full analytics view of performance across domains or learning paths but instead provide questions and answers together with explanations.&lt;/p&gt;

  Comparing Certification Exam Quizzes with Competitors
&lt;/h3&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Here's where I found value in the certification exam quizzes:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;If you require structured video learning or hands-on experience with products or courses, other competitor platforms may meet your needs more adequately. It is critical that all of your choices match your preferred learning style(s).&lt;/p&gt;

  Practical Material for Future Aspirants

&lt;p&gt;Here are some concrete steps you can take to prepare for your upcoming exam:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;li&gt;Use the free Databricks Community Edition to create small projects or labs that reinforce what you've learned conceptually&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Regularly take practice tests under timed conditions as a means of tracking your improvement&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;As soon as you complete each practice test, review all of your answers (particularly incorrect ones) and ensure you understand why the answer was incorrect, not just that it was incorrect&lt;/li&gt;
