If you know Western astrology, you know your sun sign, maybe your moon and rising. Chinese astrology goes much further than the "Year of the Dragon" placemat at your local restaurant. Its most detailed system, BaZi (八字, "Eight Characters," also called the Four Pillars of Destiny), builds a chart from the exact year, month, day and hour you were born.

The first time people see a BaZi chart, they're usually confused: rows of Chinese characters, terms like "Direct Officer" and "Luck Pillar." This guide won't make grand predictions. It gives you a framework for reading a chart: what's in it, what each part describes, and how to compare it with your actual life.

 1. Where the chart comes from: your birth data

Each of your birth year, month, day and hour gets a pair of characters: a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. Four pillars × two characters = eight characters. For example: Jia-Zi year, Bing-Yin month, Wu-Chen day, Geng-Shen hour.

A few details that trip people up:

Birth time matters a lot. The hour pillar changes every two hours. Get it wrong and the chart can change a lot.

Birthplace matters too. Traditional practice uses true solar time, so the same clock time in two different cities can give different hours.

Months follow the solar terms, not the calendar. The BaZi year starts around February 4 (Lichun, the start of spring), not on January 1 or Chinese New Year. If you were born in late January or early February, your "Chinese zodiac animal" may not be the one you've always been told.

So before you look at any interpretation, check the birth date, time and place the chart was built from. If those are wrong, the reading is wrong too.

 2. The Five Elements: the overall balance

Every stem and branch belongs to one of the Five Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water. Count them up and you get your chart's overall mix: what's strong, what's missing, and how the elements feed or restrain each other.

A common beginner mistake is "I'm missing Water, so I need more Water." Real readings look at the whole structure, especially relative to your Day Master.

 3. The Day Master and the Ten Gods: the heart of the reading

Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar. It represents you. Every other character relates to it in a specific way, and these relationships are called the Ten Gods (十神):

Ten Gods

Relationship to you

Typical themes

Friend / Rob Wealth

Same element as you

Self, peers, competition and cooperation

Eating God / Hurting Officer

What you produce

Expression, talent, creativity

Direct / Indirect Wealth

What you control

Resources, money, practicality

Direct Officer / Seven Killings

What controls you

Rules, pressure, responsibility, career

Direct / Indirect Resource

What supports you

Learning, support, ways of thinking

The Ten Gods turn the chart into something closer to personality and behavior. Someone with prominent Eating God or Hurting Officer, for instance, often has a strong need to express themselves and fits creative work.

 4. Luck Pillars and Annual Pillars: the timeline

A birth chart is the static part. BaZi also has a timeline:

Luck Pillars (大运) change every ten years. Think of them as the "season" of a decade of your life.

Annual Pillars (流年) describe the theme of each year as it interacts with your chart and your current Luck Pillar.

This is where BaZi gets practical: instead of saying "you are like this," it asks "what tends to come up in this period, and how can you use it?"

 5. How to read a reading without getting lost

Check the data first: birth time, place, and solar-term boundaries.

Start from the Day Master: is it strong or weak, and what supports it?

Read the Ten Gods as tendencies, not verdicts. "Seven Killings" isn't a curse. It often points to drive and pressure.

Compare with your real life. Look at past turning points. Do they line up with Luck Pillar changes? That tells you how much weight to give the rest.

Treat it as a lens for reflection, not as a replacement for your own decisions.

Try it on your own chart

The fastest way to learn is to look at your own chart while reading a guide like this. Tools such as Destiny Book (mingshu.help) build a free BaZi chart from your birth data, then explain personality, career, money and relationships in everyday language, along with your decade and yearly cycles. It also has a compatibility reading that compares two charts. It's available in English, Chinese and Japanese.

Whatever tool you use, keep the same attitude: check the data, start from the Day Master, and take what's useful for understanding yourself. Chinese astrology is a mirror, not a sentence.
