How I'm Using AI to Build Real Software 🤖💻

AI has changed the way I approach software development.

For me, AI isn't just a chatbot that answers questions. I use it as a development tool to help me design, build, debug, learn, and experiment with real software projects.

AI-assisted development is more than generating code

When people hear "AI coding," they sometimes imagine typing a prompt and receiving an entire application.

That's only one part of it.

When I'm building a project, I use AI to help with things like:

Planning application architecture

Designing user interfaces

Creating components

Writing and explaining code

Finding bugs

Designing database structures

Working with APIs

Thinking through product features

Improving existing code

Learning technologies I don't fully understand yet

But the developer still has to make decisions.

What should the product do?

How should the system work?

What data should be stored?

How should authentication work?

How should different parts of the application communicate?

AI can help answer these questions, but understanding the underlying engineering is still important.

 Building my own software ecosystem

One of the projects I'm working on is ZazOS, an ecosystem of separate applications for productivity, search, communication, business, and AI.

Some of the applications I'm building include:

ZazID

Zaz Search

Zaz Writer

Zaz Sheets

Zaz Slides

Zaz Mail

Each application gives me another opportunity to learn something different.

For example, an email application isn't just a beautiful interface.

It involves things like:

Authentication

Email providers

Message storage

Inbox and sent mail

Drafts

Spam and trash

Attachments

Search

APIs

Security

User permissions

That is where AI-assisted development becomes interesting.

Instead of treating AI as a replacement for engineering, I use it to help me move through the engineering process faster while learning what is happening underneath.

AI doesn't remove the need to learn

This is probably the biggest lesson I've learned.

If AI writes code for me, I still need to understand enough to answer:

Why does this code work?

And when it doesn't work:

Why did it fail?

That means I still want to learn:

Programming fundamentals

Frontend engineering

Backend engineering

Databases

APIs

Authentication

Security

Software architecture

Testing

Deployment

AI can accelerate the process, but knowledge gives you control over the process.

 My development philosophy

I'm still learning, but I'm also building.

Those two things can happen at the same time.

I don't want to wait until I know everything before creating serious projects.

Instead, I build something, encounter a problem, learn what I need, solve it, and continue.

That creates a cycle:

Build → Break → Learn → Fix → Improve → Build again.

That's the approach I'm taking with my projects.

 What's next?

I'll be using DEV to document the journey.

I'll share:

Projects I'm building

AI development experiments

Things I learn

Technical problems I encounter

Solutions that work

Mistakes I make

Architecture decisions

Lessons from building with AI

This is just the beginning.

I'm Dev Hassan, a developer and builder from Nigeria, and I'm documenting my journey of learning software engineering while building real products.

Let's build. 🚀

What has AI changed about the way you develop software?

I'd love to hear how other developers are using AI in their workflow.
