I was going to skip today's entry because I have been busy with my job obligations but I told myself I will not neglect the small daily disciplines; so here I am.

Here is what I did today

I signed up for Exercism which is a free open source platform that helps you learn how to program through exercises. So far, I love this platform! I have tried others like Codewars and I feel like this one is the best option for me! The UI is amazing and it has a community section. I also love that they have learning tracks and you can see your progress. So far, I have completed 2 JavaScript learning tracks.

 Update on the Admin Dashboard

I just finished out the html contents for the Admin Dashboard; it is currently filled with Dummy content. My next step is to create the layouts using grid and then figure out how to get new icons added to the page. For this project, I plan to write the stylings using SCSS; we'll see how it goes as it will be my first time.

Motto for the day: "Slow progress is better than no progress."

Today's learning session comprised of me struggling with CSS Grid. Here is what I have to replicate with Grid:

I can replicate the main grid easily but trying to use Grid to make the header has been a struggle. My goal is to get this done tonight by latest tomorrow so I can start the Admin Dashboard Project.

 What I Learned Today

Difference between CSS Grid and CSS Flexbox

Creating a Grid

Positioning Grid Elements

Advanced Grid Properties

I am 91% completed with the TOP Intermediate HTML and CSS Course. The last project in this section is an Admin Dashboard.

Learn CSS Framework or CSS Preprocessor?

I spent a lot of time today watching videos and researching which CSS framework I wanted to learn; specifically Bootstrap or Tailwind CSS. I have used Bootstrap before and found some frustrations trying to override some of its stylings. I looked at Tailwind and was instantly turned off by its multiple class system. I also looked into maybe I should learn Sass.

 Here is what I decided

This video basically convince me that I don't need to learn a CSS framework right now. I understand CSS but sometimes, the grind of creating with just vanilla CSS can be time consuming hence why I wanted to learn a framework. I decided to learn Sass to take my current vanilla CSS skills to the next level.

 What is Sass?

According to their website, Sass stands for Syntactically Awesome Style Sheet. It's basically CSS with "super powers." Some of the features I think I will benefit from is:

Nesting

Being able to nest classes in each other and avoid over complication/repeating myself when I style stuff

Custom Variables

Although CSS has its own way of creating custom variables, I think the feature in Sass will keep things streamlined

I plan to learn Sass through this youtube tutorial.

Day 10 #100DaysofCode

Today, I took a break from all the coding stuff and watched this video on how to improve your LinkedIn for software developers

Here is what I learned about LinkedIn

LinkedIn should be a summary of your resume

I need a good headshot

Drop generic terms like "software developer" and use tech terminology like "React" "Bootstrap" etc

Bio should be short

Feature section is essential!

Everything I've done should go here

Keep strengths on LinkedIn

Show quantitative improvements

Job description is what I achieved not what I did

Skills and endorsements are not that important

Certifications should not be the focus

Recommendations are powerful.

At last! Project Sign Up Page has been completed. After a long and tough week, I am proud to finish this project. Moral of this story is to persevere through the winter. I had imposter syndrome and doubts if I was capable to get through this project but I persevered through and figured it out. See the live demo here

 Project Update

 Before

 After

 Room for improvement

Form does not validate

This is because the
input submit div
is outside of the form element.

When I move it into the form element, it works but it breaks my stylings.

I plan to fix it when I am putting together my portfolio at the end the curriculum. Right now, I am more focused on finishing this course.

Add JavaScript functionality, specifically making sure the password and confirm password matches.

After a difficult day yesterday, I am feeling much better. I weathered the winter of my mind and came out the other side. I reviewed some CSS concepts and felt better about where I am currently at.

Update on the Sign Up Page

What I've done so far:

Switched up the image to a smaller one for scalability.

Sign up page is 90% completed

It's one of those frustrating days. Coupled with stressors from work and building this Sign-up Form; I've been feeling drained. I had to reassure myself that the stress and frustration I am facing now is just a tiny spec in the massive opportunity to come in the future; I just have to suck it up and continue to learn. Keep progressing.

Update on the Sign Up Form

 Issues I am facing

Scaling the
background-image
to take up 1/3 of the browser.

The above screenshot shows the CSS styling I have applied.

The image is being distorted as the browser shrinks and I am struggling to keep it static.

I have tried using non-responsive unit
px
but that cuts off part of the image.

max-width
does not do the trick either.

 Random Question

Anyone heard of Dev10? If so, what are yall thoughts about them?

Update on the Sign up Page

I have basically finished structuring the html page and now going to start working on the CSS. Writing out the form was not too difficult but I foresee I will have to restructure the contents to target them better with CSS. I have made efforts to commit to Github more often to show the updates I am making. The goal is to be completed by tomorrow.

Anyone have the case of the Mondays? Not me!

 Concepts I Learned Today

I am still learning about html forms. There is so much reading in this section of TOP. So far they covered:

Form Validations

Required Validations

Text Length Validations

Number Range Validations

Pattern Validations

Styling Validations

 Project Sign-Up Form

Finally got to the project section and will be building something similar to this. My goal is to get this done by tomorrow. I will be uploading to my Github
