Why I Built a Modern Spring Initializr Alternative with Visual JPA & Docker

Whenever I start a new Spring Boot project using standard tools like
start.spring.io
, the workflow usually looks like this:

Select Spring Web, Spring Data JPA, and PostgreSQL.

Download the ZIP.

Open IntelliJ.

Spend the next 2 hours manually creating:

Entity classes with JPA annotations (
@Id
,
@GeneratedValue
,
@Column
,
@OneToMany
)

Repository interfaces extending
JpaRepository

DTO request/response records and MapStruct mappers

REST Controllers with Jakarta validation

Flyway or Liquibase database migration scripts

A
docker-compose.yml
for PostgreSQL

Standard generators give you an empty
Application.java
and a raw build file. They give you the foundation, but none of the actual architecture.

That’s why I spent the past few months building SpringForge — an open Spring Initializr Alternative and production-grade Spring Boot Project Generator.

 What Makes it Different?

 1. Visual JPA Entity Modeling

Instead of hand-writing boilerplate Java entities, you can visually design your entities, attributes, and relationships. It generates clean, audited domain models with
@PrePersist
timestamps, validation rules, and primary keys.

 2. Full Layered Architecture (Not Just Empty Classes)

When you generate a project, you get a clean enterprise layout:

controller/
: REST endpoints with OpenAPI annotations and RFC-7807 error responses

service/
: Transactional business logic

repository/
: Spring Data JPA repositories with custom query methods

dto/
: Strongly typed records for API decoupling

config/
: Pre-wired beans for Security, Jackson JSR-310, Redis, and Kafka

 3. Automated Database Migrations & Docker Compose

Every project automatically includes idempotent Flyway migration scripts matching your entity schema, along with a ready-to-run
docker-compose.yml
pre-wired with healthy container checks.

 Pre-Built Architecture Blueprints

In addition to custom project generation, we built 20 production architecture starters:

🏗️ Spring Boot Microservices Template (Eureka discovery, Spring Cloud Gateway, OpenTelemetry)

📨 Spring Boot Kafka Template (Event streaming with outbox pattern and KRaft Docker)

⚡ Spring Boot Redis Template (Lettuce caching and distributed stores)

🔐 Secured JWT API Blueprint (Stateless Spring Security 6 auth)

 Try It Out

The tool is live, free, and produces compile-ready Maven and Gradle ZIP archives for Java 21 and Spring Boot 3.4:

👉 Launch the Generator at springforge.xyz

I'd love to hear your feedback from fellow Java and Spring Boot developers! What's the biggest pain point in your current backend setup workflow?
