In today's turbulent economic year, many developers in the tech startup industry are experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety due to the fear of losing their jobs. However, there are steps developers can take to mitigate these feelings and improve their productivity. One such step is forming productive habits that can help them better manage their time, work more efficiently, and achieve their goals. In this article, we'll explore some tips on how developers can form good habits and boost their productivity in a challenging work environment.

Start with Small Habits
Forming a new habit can be challenging, especially if it's a big change. Instead of trying to tackle a major change all at once, start with small habits that are easy to incorporate into your daily routine. For example, try setting a goal to write a certain amount of code each day or take a five-minute break every hour to stretch your legs. These small habits can add up and lead to bigger changes over time.

Make Habits Part of Your Routine
Developers often have a routine when it comes to their workday, from when they start working to when they take breaks. Use this routine to your advantage by incorporating new habits into it. For example, if you want to start meditating every day, schedule it into your routine at a specific time each day. This will help you stay consistent with your habits and make them a regular part of your workday.

Use a Habit Tracker (Visit Devjour.com)
Tracking your progress is an important part of forming habits. Use a habit tracker, either on paper or on your phone, to keep track of your progress. Seeing your progress can be motivating and encourage you to stick with your habits. There are many habit tracker apps available, such as Habitify, Loop Habit Tracker, and Fabulous, that can help you track your progress and stay motivated.

Focus on One Habit at a Time
Trying to form multiple habits at once can be overwhelming and make it harder to stick with any of them. Instead, focus on one habit at a time until it becomes a natural part of your routine. Once you've successfully incorporated one habit, move on to the next.

Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment and aware of your thoughts and feelings. Practicing mindfulness can help reduce stress and increase productivity by allowing you to focus on the task at hand. Try incorporating mindfulness into your workday by taking a few deep breaths before starting a project, or taking a few minutes to meditate during a break.

Take Breaks
Taking breaks is essential for productivity, especially when working long hours. It's important to give your brain a break to recharge and come back to work with renewed focus. Try taking short breaks every hour, or longer breaks every few hours, to help prevent burnout and keep your productivity levels high.

In conclusion, forming good habits is key to boosting productivity, especially during challenging times. By starting with small habits, making them part of your routine, using a habit tracker, focusing on one habit at a time, practicing mindfulness, and taking breaks, developers can work more efficiently and achieve their goals. By incorporating these tips into your daily routine, you can work better and improve your chances of success, even in turbulent economic years.

Dear Developers,

Our dev community is under fire. Big tech companies are firing people to maintain their own budget.
They should have thought of this before hiring these people. Really it's outrageous that people get fired overnight or to put them on very stressful situation as what happened in Twitter.
Literally, people are getting fired during their stand ups and they got logged off. In addition, they are requested to provide an update of their work.
It's neither human , nor professional to put people under this stress.
Have they ever thought how trust issues these employees will feel? Later, these companies are asking people to be loyal and devoted to their companies.
That's why we (Devjour) advocate to make people take care and track their mental health and productivity.

Nevertheless, we need to help Devs from our community. It's an honest question, what shall we do to help Devs during this time? Please let's think together below...

5 Tips For Developers to Stay Productive and Happy

Productivity is an ongoing challenge for developers. There are so many new frameworks, tools and languages that it can be overwhelming to keep track of everything. The good news is that staying productive doesn’t just come down to knowing the right resources. Here are 5 tips on how to stay happy and productive as a developer:

 1. Start journaling your mood and productivity

When you’re feeling down or unmotivated, it can be hard to get into the right head space to get work done. Journaling your moods and how they affect productivity can help you spot early warning signs that you’re becoming unproductive. Mapping out how you feel as a developer can also help you spot patterns in your emotions and how they affect your work. It’ll also help you see how certain events in your life (like new birthdays or holidays) can affect your mood. In Devjour, we are offering a guided journaling tool for developers to help them track and visualise their moods and productivity.

Sign up now in Devjour

 2. Track your time and find your groove

Keeping track of your time is key to discovering your groove as a developer. Without knowing how long things take you overall, you can’t really get a sense of what you’re spending most of your time on. This can also help you spot patterns in your time spent. For example, if you’re consistently spending 45 minutes on a specific task, you can try breaking it up so that it’s less than 45 minutes. This could be as simple as taking a break or logging the task as a sub-task within a bigger project so you have context around it. You can also use tools like RescueTime or TimeWires to see how long you spend on specific tasks.

 3. Pick a few tech tools and stick to them

When you’re just getting started as a developer, it’s helpful to pick a few tech tools that will help you get started. Once you’ve had a few weeks or months of experience, you can try to add more tools as you see fit. For example, you can use Slack to stay in touch with your team and stay on top of tasks and updates. There are tons of integrations for Slack that you can use to stay in touch with your team. If you don’t use Trello, you should start. For tasks that aren’t within your team, you can use Asana as a central place for your projects (you can also use Trello for this). You can also use Trello’s smart cards to give context to specific cards and make it easier for other teams to follow your work.

 4. Every code-completion tool helps you learn at least one thing

If you’re new to a specific language or framework, you can quickly add to your knowledge by starting with code completion. After you’ve had a while with a tool, you can try to be critical of how you use it.

 5. Celebrate small victories

As a developer, you’re constantly trying to push further. It can be easy to get discouraged when you don’t make progress as fast as you want. But even small victories can help you stay positive. Whether it’s a small project you completed or improving your code-completion results, celebrate these small wins so you don’t get too down when you don’t make as much progress as you’d like.

 Conclusion

It’s important to be productive as a developer, especially when there are so many new tools, languages and frameworks to learn. Keeping track of your mood and productivity can help you spot early warning signs and spot patterns in your time spent. These include journaling your moods, tracking your time and finding your groove.

Developers spend a lot of time working. It’s an essential part of our jobs, but it can also be very isolating. There’s no getting away from it: developers spend all day staring at a computer screen. And whenever we spend extended periods of time alone, it’s natural to feel some degree of stress or anxiety from being so isolated. These feelings might not always be negative though. One way to combat the stress and isolation of our profession is through the practice of mindfulness. Mindfulness is the awareness that comes from paying attention to every moment in your life. It can help us become more aware of everything in our lives, including the people around us and all the things we have to do each day. This article will explain how guided journaling for developers can increase your productivity by helping you focus your thoughts on the right things throughout your workday.

What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is a state of mind where you are fully present and aware of everything in your life. When you are mindful, you don’t let your thoughts wander off into the future or the past. You’re actively paying attention to everything that is happening right now. This is what allows you to be more in tune with the people and things around you. Mindfulness also improves your concentration by helping you stay focused on the task at hand.

Signup Now in Devjour

Guided Journaling for Developers
Guided journaling is a writing practice in which you focus on a single thought or feeling for the duration of your writing. There are many guides online that can teach you how to journal. The practice of guided journaling for developers aims to increase your productivity by helping you focus your thoughts on the right things throughout your workday. Guided journaling can also be effective for reducing anxiety after long periods of time working alone. Guided journaling for developers can be used to process feelings and thoughts associated with work, such as your progress, progress on specific tasks, or frustrations with your job. It can also be used to process feelings associated with other aspects of your life, such as your relationships with family and friends or emotions that you’re experiencing due to events in the news.

How to do Guided Journal
First, pick a journal page. Choose a page that is as close to a blank page as possible. You will want to avoid writing on a page that has any previous writing on it. Next, pick a topic that you want to focus on while you journal. You can use a variety of topics, but it is important that the topic is something that you are currently interested in or have an emotional connection to. Next, pick an entry point. This entry point can be any thought or feeling that you would like to discuss while you journal. For example, you can write about a frustration that you are experiencing with a task or you can write about your progress on a particular task. Be sure to avoid making this entry point directly about a person or thing that you are currently working with.

Sample Day of Guided Journaling for Developers
Start your day by taking a break from work. This can be a quick walk outside or a few minutes of physical exercise. There are numerous reasons why taking a break before starting a workday can be beneficial, but the main one is that it gives your brain a break from being inside your head. This will decrease the chances of your mind wandering while you journal. Put aside your journal for a few minutes and close your laptop or computer if you are using it while you journal. This will force you to take your attention away from work and put it back on yourself. Journaling can be done while you are doing anything, but sitting cross-legged on the floor or sitting in a chair with your journal open is the most comfortable and effective way to journal.

Summary
Mindfulness can help you become more aware of everything in your life, including the people and things around you. It can also help you cultivate feelings of gratitude by noticing all the good things in your life. Mindfulness can also help you become more self-aware and more self-confident in the workplace. To reap these benefits, develop a daily routine of practicing mindfulness. This can involve sitting quietly in a place where you are free from any distractions, focusing on your breathing, and letting your thoughts wander. You can also try using a mindfulness app to help you stay focused on your breathing. Mindful people are more likely to notice patterns in their lives that can help them become more self-aware and more self-confident in the workplace.

Trend: Devs and Anxiety

It's important to take a step forward. Read through to know why...

Therapeutic benefits of journaling?
Journaling has both physical and emotional benefits. Studies show that, physically, the benefits of expressive writing range from strengthening immune cells to lowering blood pressure and enhancing wound healing. Because it releases physical tension from our bodies, journaling can help to keep us in better general health all around.
In the mental/emotional realm, writing out thoughts and feelings can help us to calm and clear our minds, release pent-up feelings and everyday tension and stress, and let go of negative thoughts. It can also help us manage anxiety and depression, increase self-awareness, and enhance our overall sense of well-being. In fact, evidence tells us that writing can produce a therapeutic benefit close to that of sessions with a psychotherapist.**

Why is journaling so effective for Developers in particular?
Writing in a journal affording a safe space for questioning, observing, and exploring likes and dislikes, passions and motivations, fears and apprehensions, dreams and desires. It offers a place to practice assertiveness, find self-compassion, and build healthy self-esteem by developing a nurturing relationship with one’s authentic self. It provides an outlet for the emotional highs and lows, overwhelm, and confusion that mark the developers' experience phase (Learning Curve). While working in journaling, a developer can develop coping skills, empowerment, and a healthy inner anchor to enhance maturation and carry them into their work experience.

How can journaling help with Devs anxiety?
Anxiety is also released when we let our thoughts and feelings out. It changes them from an abstract to a concrete form, and helps get them “outside of us.” This makes them feel less overwhelming, and us feel more balanced and stable.

Devjour is a guided journaling tool that care about the mental health and productivity of developers, designers and product managers.

Because we are devs, designers and PMs who found it important to create a tool to enable us and our colleagues to be mentally stable and boosting our productivity.

Please check Devjour and tell us what we need to improve.

Do you ever get the feeling that you don’t have enough time or that you haven’t accomplished a fraction of what you’ve planned for your day? Well, whatever be the case, chances are that either you are not fully engaged or you need to be more productive at work. One way to make it happen is tracking your productivity and mood during the day and using that information to improve your productivity skills.

In this article, you’ll find the list of ways in which better time management that can help you boost your productivity. But first, let’s start off by discussing the various challenges that might be the root cause holding your productivity back. So, here is the list of some of the most recognised factors that usually affect your productivity level at work. Let’s have a look at them.

Poor work management

Procrastination

Poor communication

Lack of delegation

Inconsistency

Working against the internal clock

If any of these situations resemble your daily work routine, now is the time to put a a tracker in place.

Here’s how you can improve your productivity with productivity tracking

With an advanced a simple productivity tracking tool, you can:

1. Develop a sense of accountability
The biggest advantage of productivity tracking is that it helps you to develop a sense of accountability and urgency during the work process. It gives you the ability to organize and manage tasks across a project based on their priority. This way, it helps you to focus on one task/activity at a time and give your complete attention to what needs to be completed first.
2. Stay focused
With productivity tracking it is less likely that you’ll invest your time in anything else apart from your work. This will help you to remain focused on your tasks and projects. As a result, you will be able to get your work done more efficiently.
3. Eliminate potential bottlenecks from the day
In every team, there are members who take more time to complete their tasks and assignments as compared to others. Now, there can be two reasons – one, they are very dedicated and two, they have too much on their to-do list. Having a productivity tracking tool allows you to identify the bottlenecks. It helps you to take necessary steps to improve the overall performance.
4. Experience a sense of satisfaction
Seeing your tasks and projects get completed as planned is an amazing feeling. And with productivity tracking, you can actually experience it each day. You can see how much you have accomplished from your list. this gives you satisfaction and motivates to finish everything on time as efficiently as possible.

Hello Everyone,

Around 2 months ago, we (Devjour team) were thinking about what shall we create to benefit our community.
We found out that one of the critical things that we experienced ourselves during the previous period is inability to express and track our mental health and productivity.

Therefore, we thought about creating something that would enable us to do that. We developed (Devjouras a guided journaling tool.

We tested it with several people and we found good traction. But we still need to know if it's the right thing for our community Health well-being and productivity.

We really interested to know your opinion because honestly it matters to us.

You can check it from this Here https://devjour.com

We are going to wait for your honest feedback here...

We are developers, designers, and product managers. Since the beginning of the pandemic, we were working from home and staying long hours in front of the screens. In the beginning we were enjoying it. However, since ti got longer than expected, we found it hard to maintain our mental well-being and productivity.

Unfortunately, it’s likely burnout is affecting some of your high-performing developers and software engineers. In fact, 58% of security and development professionals say they’re currently experiencing burnout , and research shows that burnout disproportionately affects your highest-achieving, most motivated employees. — Forbes

Therefore, we found journaling a haven that allows us to observe our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours from an objective standpoint. With practice, we learned to select and manipulate them. We became the masters of our own selves and minds.

As an agile team, we created Devjour for you. It’s a guided journaling habit that helps you tracking your mental health and boost your productivity.
