**This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine

  What I Built

SysAmp v2.91 is a full-stack system observability deck and Docker container orchestrator resurrected in the spirit of the iconic 1997 Winamp 2.x interface, infused with local open-weight AI.

The Interpretation of the Theme: Ghost in the Machine

For this challenge, we asked ourselves: What if the ghosts haunting our machines aren't spooky apparitions, but the beloved software spirits of the early internet?

In 1997, Winamp was on every developer's screen. Today, developers stare at sterile, cold cloud metric dashboards and heavy Electron containers. SysAmp brings the ghost of Winamp back to life — not as a retro skin, but as a living, breathing telemetry cockpit. Every pixelated EQ band now channels live CPU core voltages and RAM pressure, and the legendary "Whip the Llama" slogan is reborn through an on-device Google Gemma AI doctor that diagnoses dead and crashed Docker containers.

  Demo

Live Agent Session: View Curated DevRelay Agent Session on DEV

Local Walkthrough:

Dual-Mode Visualizer: Real-time 18-bar segmented LED Spectrum Analyzer (Green $\rightarrow$ Yellow $\rightarrow$ Red) and an Oscilloscope waveform driven by actual hardware clock speed.

10-Band Hardware Equalizer: Sliders dynamically driven by CPU Cores 1–4, RAM, Swap, Disk I/O, and Network Rx/Tx throughput.

Playlist Editor as Container Manager: Play (Start), Pause (Freeze), and Stop containers with authentic retro beeps via the Web Audio API.

Windowshade Mini-Mode: Double-click the title bar to collapse into a sleek 14px horizontal status strip for non-intrusive desktop monitoring.

⚡ "Whip the Llama" AI Doctor: One-click instant diagnostic query sending crashed container logs to local Gemma, which streams 1-sentence fixes across the green LED marquee.

Playlist Exporter: Exports running containers as a production-ready
docker-compose.yml
(
#EXTM3U
header format).

  Code

The complete source code is open source and available on GitHub:

https://short.do/OmV0jC

  Architecture Overview:

Frontend: React 19, Vite, Tailwind CSS v4, Lucide Icons, HTML5 Canvas, Web Audio API synthesizer.

Backend Bridge: Node.js, Express (Port 4091),
systeminformation
for safe cross-platform hardware telemetry,
dockerode
for Docker socket communication.

Smart Fallback Engine: If the Docker daemon is offline, SysAmp smoothly falls back to live host OS process tracking (
pid-*
) without crashing.

Local Inference: Native HTTP client interfacing with Ollama's local REST endpoint (
localhost:11434
) running
gemma3:4b
.

  How I Built It

  1. Open-Weight AI Core: Google Gemma (
gemma3:4b
)

At the heart of SysAmp's AI Doctor is Google's open-weight Gemma model (
gemma3:4b
quantized at Q4_K_M), running locally via Ollama.

When an engineer clicks the lightning bolt (⚡) or when a container crashes:

SysAmp extracts stderr/stdout logs and container metadata (exit codes, memory caps, port conflicts).

It prompts local Gemma to act as a Unix systems engineer:

You are SysAmp AI Doctor. Analyze this Docker container and give a 1-sentence root cause and exact CLI fix command.
   Container: worker-queue-service (node:20-alpine)
   Status: EXITED
Recent Logs: FATAL ERROR: Reached heap limit Allocation failed - JavaScript heap out of memory

Gemma identifies the root cause (e.g.,
Exit Code 137 OOMKilled
) and provides an immediate remediation command (
docker update --memory 512m ...
).

The response streams live across the vintage green LED marquee screen and into the diagnostic drawer.

  2. Dual-Engine Telemetry Bridge

Built with Node.js and
systeminformation
, the backend maps real hardware load onto Winamp's 10-band equalizer sliders:

Bands 1–4: Core loads for CPU 0 through CPU 3

Band 5: Physical RAM utilization %

Band 6: Swap usage %

Band 7: Disk transfer pressure

Bands 8–9: Active network I/O (Rx/Tx KB/s)

Band 10: Total CPU percentage

  Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Why does open innovation matter for a system monitoring deck?

Production Infrastructure Privacy: System logs, crash dumps, and internal Docker configurations contain sensitive tokens, internal IPs, and proprietary source snippets. Streaming these to a proprietary third-party cloud API introduces massive compliance and security risks. By running Gemma locally, zero telemetry ever leaves the machine.

Air-Gapped & Offline Resilience: When your network interface drops or an outage hits your internet connection, a cloud-dependent AI assistant is dead in the water. An open-weight model running on localhost operates with 100% fidelity even when the network cable is unplugged.

Zero Marginal Cost: Observability software shouldn't incur per-token SaaS subscription billing just to watch a service loop or inspect a container log. Open-weight models empower individual hackers and home-lab enthusiasts to have world-class AI diagnosis without a credit card.

  My Agent Session

This project was reviewed, tested, and audited live using Antigravity and recorded to DevRelay:

SysAmp v2.91 — Retro Winamp Observability Deck & Docker Manager with Gemma AI Doctor

          You

We have to conduct a live agent review session for SysAmp v2.91 in Antigravity and record it so we can submit it to DevRelay.

Starting the live agent review for SysAmp v2.91. Let's inspect the repository layout, dependencies, and architectural design across frontend, backend, and the local AI integration.

Inspect the backend architecture, Docker container bridge, and hardware telemetry engine.

Inspected backend/server.js and package.json:
- Framework: Node.js Express server on port 4091 with CORS support.
- Telemetry: Uses systeminformation to gather CPU per-core loads, RAM, Swap, disk I/O, and network transfer rates (rx/tx KB/s).
- 10-Band Equalizer: Maps 10 hardware channels [CPU1-4, RAM, SWAP, DISK, NET-IN, NET-OUT, TOTAL-CPU] to Winamp EQ sliders.
- Dual-Engine Fallback: Queries Docker daemon via dockerode; if Docker is offline, falls back seamlessly to top OS host processes (PIDs) with memory RSS and CPU tracking.
- Verified live telemetry output on host system: CPU 95.6% load, 4 active cores, 57% RAM used, active network interface detected.

Audited frontend/src/App.jsx, README.md, and package.json:
- Architecture: React 19 + Vite + Tailwind CSS v4 + Lucide icons.
- Retro UI: Faithful 1997 Winamp 2.x recreation with Main Player, 10-Band Equalizer, Playlist Editor, and Windowshade mode.
- 3 Theming Modes: Classic 1997, Cyber Matrix, and Amber CRT with authentic pixel styling.
- Canvas Visualizer: Dual-mode HTML5 Canvas engine rendering an 18-bar segmented LED Spectrum Analyzer (Green -> Yellow -> Red) and an Oscilloscope waveform modulated by live CPU load.
- 'Whip the Llama' AI Doctor: Queries local Ollama at localhost:11434 (gemma3:4b) with container logs to extract instant root causes (e.g. OOMKilled exit code 137) and remediation commands, streaming results across the green LED marquee.
- Playlist Exporter: Generates production-ready docker-compose.yml files from running container tracks.
- Verified production build: Vite compiled successfully with zero errors (dist/assets/index.js 176 kB, dist/assets/index.css 22.5 kB).

  The Spirit of It

There was something unforgettable about 1997. Software was tactile, responsive, idiosyncratic, and fun. It had pixel fonts, beveled chrome buttons, and green phosphor readouts. When Winamp launched with "Winamp, it really whips the llama's ass!", it captured the rebel spirit of early open computing.

Building SysAmp v2.91 was like holding a digital séance: summoning the spirit of Nullsoft Winamp into the era of containerized microservices and on-device generative AI. When you click play and hear the 8-bit square wave beep while your CPU core stats dance across the spectrum analyzer, software feels magical again.

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 3: Slow & Steady.

  What I Built

Overnight Gemma Agent is a private, 100% local morning briefing assistant for your WhatsApp group chats powered by Google Gemma (
gemma2:2b
).

  The Problem

Every morning, developers, managers, and students wake up to dozens of notifications and 100+ unread messages in team channels and group chats. Reading through all of them takes 20+ minutes of cognitive load, and critical blockers or emergency server issues get buried under casual chit-chat.

Sending confidential company chats or private group conversations to third-party cloud LLM APIs poses huge privacy, compliance, and cost issues.

  The Solution: Overnight Gemma Agent

Overnight Gemma Agent monitors selected WhatsApp or Telegram groups overnight while you sleep, collects conversations in a local SQLite database, and at your designated morning hour (e.g., 7:00 AM), runs Google Gemma locally to deliver an executive Strict Two-Line Digest:

Line 1 (The Vibe / Core Topic): What the group talked about overnight in under 20 words.

Line 2 (Action Items & Blockers): Clear, prioritized tasks, deadlines, decisions, or emergency bug fixes.

  Key Features

🔒 Zero Data Leakage / 100% Private: Your chat logs, contacts, and group messages never leave your local machine.

⚡ Local Google Gemma Inference: Powered by
gemma2:2b
running locally via Ollama with zero API cost and ultra-low latency.

📱 Multi-Platform Support: Seamless integration for WhatsApp (instant QR code connection via Baileys) and Telegram.

⏰ Morning Scheduler: Automated delivery schedule (set your morning wake-up time).

🧪 Instant Mock Seed Simulator: Test group conversations and prompt engineering instantly without waiting overnight.

💻 Clean React + Vite Dashboard: Real-time connection status, group selector, scheduled time configuration, and interactive digest card.

  Architecture & How It Works

  The Gemma Two-Line Extraction Prompt

In
backend/src/agent/gemmaSummarizer.js
, Gemma is configured with deterministic parameters (
temperature: 0.2
,
num_predict: 90
) to eliminate hallucinations and output strictly actionable morning briefings:

const prompt = `You are an overnight group chat summarizer agent.
Read the following chat transcript from the group "${groupName}" and output STRICTLY TWO LINES of plain text.
Line 1: Summarize the core discussion or vibe in under 20 words.
Line 2: List any action items, deadlines, decisions, or important links (or write "No action items." if none).
Do NOT include bullet points, bold text, labels like "Line 1:", or greetings.

Chat Transcript:
${chatTranscript}`;

  Demo

  How to Run Locally

  1. Prerequisites

Node.js v18+

Ollama installed with Gemma:

  ollama pull gemma2:2b

  2. Start Backend Server

cd backend
npm install
node server.js

The backend starts on
http://localhost:4000
.

  3. Start Frontend Dashboard

cd frontend
npm install
npm run dev

Open
http://localhost:5173
in your browser.

  Code

https://shorturl.at/FsZef

Why Open Innovation & Local Models Matter

Group chats are deeply personal and sensitive. Open-weight models like Google Gemma democratize on-device AI:

Zero API bills: Run continuous overnight cron jobs for unlimited groups at $0 marginal cost.

Offline Resilience: Functions even if your external internet connection drops during the night.

Complete Data Sovereignty: Compliance-friendly for workplace internal teams.

  My Agent Session

This entire agent architecture, DevRelay connection, and verification was recorded live using Google Antigravity and DevRelay:

Overnight Gemma Agent — Local WhatsApp and Telegram Morning Digest with Google Gemma
      gemini-3.8-flash

          You

We have to record this agent session by using DevRelay and Antigravity now, please guide me through it & after that we need to submit it. We are developing the Overnight Gemma Agent (an open-source, local WhatsApp and Telegram morning digest assistant powered by Google Gemma).

          Agent

Ran system doctor and wired DevRelay MCP server into Antigravity. Synced all 9 DevRelay agent skills into ~/.gemini/config/skills. Inspected workspace architecture for Overnight Gemma Agent (Node.js/Express backend, Baileys WhatsApp adapter, SQLite message repository, and Gemma 2B summarization pipeline).

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle.

  What I Built

DakshinVani (दक्षिण वाणी) translates South Indian restaurant menus into Hindi, Marathi, French, Japanese, and German — without falling into the literal-translation traps that make generic tools turn beloved dishes into nonsense or culinary horror.

Walk into an authentic South Indian tiffin room and run their menu through a generic translation tool. Suddenly, iconic dishes turn into comedy—or worse, culinary horror:

"गर्म दाल स्नान" / "Hot Lentil Bath" / "温かいレンズ豆のお風呂"

Translates Kannada Bath (spiced rice dish) as a literal bath!

Ghee Roast Podi Masala Dosa

"घी रोस्ट पाउडर डोसा" / "Clarified Butter Powder Crepe"

Translates Milagai Podi (stone-ground roasted lentil & chili condiment) as industrial "powder/dust".

Medu Vada with Tiffin Sambar

Translates Medu (soft interior) as a sweet/soggy "soft bean cake" instead of a crisp savory black-gram fritter.

Translates Kuzhi (cast-iron dimpled mold) as "pit/hole dumplings".

Kumbakonam Degree Filter Kaapi

"तापमान फ़िल्टर कॉफ़ी" / "Temperature Filtered Coffee"

Misses that Degree refers to lactometer-certified pure full-cream cow's milk pulled between a brass Davara and Tumbler.

DakshinVani is an open-source, locally hosted 3-Stage Culinary Menu Translator Agent powered by Google Gemma (
gemma3:4b
) that translates South Indian restaurant menus into Hindi (हिन्दी — Primary), Marathi (मराठी), French (Français), Japanese (日本語), and German (Deutsch).

Who'd pay for this: small family-run tiffin rooms and South Indian restaurants abroad, who need accurate, appetizing multilingual menus for tourists and diaspora diners but can't afford a recurring SaaS translation subscription or risk their recipes being sent to third-party training pipelines.

  Demo

Run locally:

\

bash
git clone https://github.com/kshitij9896/dakshin_vani_gemma_menu_translator
cd dakshin_vani_gemma_menu_translator
pip install -r requirements.txt
python -m uvicorn server:app --reload --port 8000
\

\

Then open http://localhost:8000

  Code

  How I Built It

How the 3-Stage Gemma Agent Works

Stage 1 —
DishDeconstructor
(Culinary RAG & Allergen Extraction): Scans dish names and chef notes against a curated South Indian Culinary Knowledge Base (
south_indian_culinary_kb.json
), flagging regional nouns (Podi, Bath, Kuzhi, Degree, Medu, Rasam, Pesarattu, Veechu), cooking vessels, fermentation times, and hidden allergens (A2 cow ghee, sesame oil, mustard seeds, cashews, urad dal).

Stage 2 —
CulturalBridgeMapper
: Maps textures and techniques to each target language's culinary intuition:

Hindi (हिन्दी): Bridges South Indian tempering (thalippu) and Podi/Bath concepts for North/Central Indian diners.

Marathi (मराठी): Connects Kuzhi Paniyaram to Appe, Milagu Rasam to digestive Saar, and Bisi Bele Bath to Masale Bhat with Marathi Moggu (kapok buds).

French (Français): Uses precise gastronomic parallels (galette dentelle fermentée, beignet salé crousti-moelleux, consommé au tamarin, feuilletage à la volée).

Japanese (日本語): Draws intuitive parallels to cast-iron Takoyaki molds for Kuzhi Paniyaram, Ganmodoki textures for Medu Vada, and Ochazuke dining style for Rasam.

German (Deutsch): Highlights sourdough-style natural fermentation, Gusseisen-Muldenpfanne baking, and strict allergen clarity.

Stage 3 —
GemmaMenuCopywriter
: Generates print-ready multilingual menu cards with native script titles, sensory descriptions, phonetic pronunciation guides, and a "How to Eat" note.

  Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Small family-run tiffin rooms operate on razor-thin margins. They won't pay $50/month for a recurring SaaS subscription just to translate seasonal specials, and they don't want their secret family spice ratios (Bisi Bele Bath 18-spice masala or Milagai Podi proportions) sent to third-party training pipelines.

By running Google Gemma (
gemma3:4b
) locally via Ollama:

Zero Marginal API Cost: Once set up on a restaurant manager's laptop, translating new daily specials into 5 languages costs ₹0 / $0.

Domain Control Over Generic APIs: Closed translation APIs don't let you inject a deterministic South Indian culinary ontology before decoding. With open-weight Gemma + our local JSON RAG graph, the restaurant owns both the glossary and the tone.

Offline Reliability: Works entirely offline inside the restaurant kitchen or print shop.

  Prize Categories

Best Use of Gemma: Uses Google's open-weight Gemma model (
gemma3:4b
/
gemma2:9b
) as the reasoning and multilingual copywriting engine in a 3-stage agentic pipeline.

- Stage 1: DishDeconstructor (Culinary RAG & glossary trap extraction)
- Stage 2: CulturalBridgeMapper (Gastronomic lenses across Hindi, Marathi, French, Japanese, and German)
- Stage 3: GemmaMenuCopywriter (Structured native-script copywriting & dining etiquette)

Fixed Windows stdout encoding with
sys.stdout.reconfigure(encoding='utf-8')
to support Devanagari, Tamil, Kannada, and Japanese scripts.

Stage 2: Blocked literal trap: Generic translators render 'Podi' as 'Powder/Dust' ('Clarified Butter Roasted Powder Crepe').
Stage 3: Generated culturally grounded translations:
- Hindi: देसी घी रोस्ट मिलगई पोडी मसाला डोसा
- Marathi: साजूक तूप रोस्ट पोडी (चटणी) मसाला डोसा
- French: Dosa Croustillant au Ghee, Podi Torréfié & Pommes de Terre Épicées

Stage 2: Blocked literal trap: Generic translators notoriously translate 'Bisi Bele Bath' word-for-word as 'Hot Lentil Bath'.
Stage 3: Generated culturally grounded translations:
- Hindi: मैसूरु बिसी बेले भात (कारा बूंदी और काजू तड़के के साथ) - clarifies 'भात' = cooked spiced rice, not a bath!
- Marathi: म्हैसूर बिसी बेळे भात (खमंग खारा बुंदी आणि साजूक तुपासह)
- French: Bisi Bele Bath de Mysore — Risotto Crémeux de Riz & Lentilles aux 18 Épices (clarifies: non un bain!)
- Japanese: マイソール伝統ビシ・ベレ・バーツ（18種スパイス香る南インド風濃厚豆リゾット）(「Bath」はお風呂ではなく炊き込みご飯料理)

Welcome to @Hacktoberfest2026

This guide covers everything you need to know about the new rules, how the reward system works, how to get physical t-shirts and swag, and how to navigate the event from start to finish.

1. What is Hacktoberfest 2026?

Hacktoberfest 2026 is a month-long celebration of open-source software running from October 1 to October 31, 2026.

The Core Theme: "AI Belongs to Everyone"

This year’s edition shifts focus entirely to open-source AI and open-weight models. Instead of spamming repositories with minor typos or documentation edits, participants learn, experiment, and build with open-source artificial intelligence.

  The Two Ways to Participate:

Online Track: Collect badges in a gamified Digital Sticker Book by completing weekly DEV challenges, attending live streams, and filling out community surveys.

In-Person Track (Fests): Attend local physical events in your city to connect with other developers, build projects together, and grab physical t-shirts and swag.

  2. Meetups vs. Hack Days vs. Pop-ups

When searching for local events, you will notice three different formats. Here is how they compare so you can choose the best fit for your goals:

Feature

Meetups / Pop-ups

Hack Days

Primary Goal

Learning, networking, community talks

Building hands-on projects

Structure

Casual panel talks, keynotes, social gatherings

Mini-hackathon format

Coding Required?

No, coding is completely optional

Yes, hands-on building/prototyping

Duration

2 to 4 hours

Half-day or full-day event

  3. The New Swag & Reward System

Rewards are managed through a gamified online dashboard containing 24 total virtual stickers. Here is how to unlock both digital badges and physical items:

                          [ 24 TOTAL VIRTUAL STICKERS ]
                                       │
      ┌────────────────────────────────┼────────────────────────────────┐
      ▼ ▼ ▼
[ 3 STICKERS ] [ 10 STICKERS ] [ 15 STICKERS ]
      │ │ │
IRL Sticker Pack Bonus Holographic Completionist Tier
(Mailed to door) Sticker added to pack (Raffle for T-shirt &
                                                                   Arduino Uno Q)

  Rewards Overview

3 Virtual Stickers = Physical IRL Sticker Pack: Sign in with MyMLH, add your mailing address, and collect 1 additional sticker to get physical stickers shipped directly to your house.

10 Virtual Stickers = Bonus Holographic Sticker: Adds a limited-edition holographic sticker to your physical shipping package.

15 Virtual Stickers = Completionist Tier: Unlocks Completionist Status, automatically entering you into the official raffle for a Hacktoberfest 2026 T-Shirt and hardware prizes like Arduino Uno Q boards.

In-Person Swag: Attending local Fests or Hack Days allows you to pick up physical t-shirts and swag bags directly on-site, provided by local event hosts.

  4. DEV AI Challenges: Schedule & Format

The primary way to earn digital stickers and compete for cash prizes without attending streams is through the Weekly DEV AI Challenges.

  How the Challenges Work:

Each week on Monday, DEV releases a new open-source AI prompt. To participate:

Build a project matching the weekly prompt (e.g., an open-weight model integration, an AI agent framework, or a utility tool).

Push your source code to a public repository (GitHub/GitLab).

Publish a detailed write-up on DEV.to featuring your code, screenshots, and architecture details using the official challenge tag.

  5. Step-by-Step Action Plan (From Start to Finish)

Phase 1: Account Setup (Day 1)

[ ] Go to hacktoberfest.com and click Sign In.

[ ] Log in using your MyMLH account (or create one for free).

[ ] Link your DEV.to profile and GitHub/GitLab accounts.

[ ] Crucial Step: Fill out your full postal address in your profile settings. Complete this step early so physical rewards can be shipped to you.

[ ] Complete the brief pre-event survey on your dashboard. (This instantly awards your first virtual stickers!)

Phase 2: Complete DEV AI Challenges (Weeks 1 - 3)

[ ] Check the DEV Community Hub for the current week's AI Challenge prompt.

[ ] Build a lightweight open-source tool, agent, or skill configuration.

[ ] Post your write-up on DEV to earn your challenge badge and enter the weekly cash prize pool.

  Phase 3: Attend an In-Person Event (Mid-October)

[ ] Visit the Hacktoberfest Fests Directory.

[ ] Search for your city or region to find local Meetups, Pop-ups, or Hack Days.

[ ] RSVP early and attend the event to claim on-site t-shirts, physical sticker packs, and your in-person event virtual badge.

Phase 4: Reaching Completionist Status (Final Week)

[ ] Open your Hacktoberfest Dashboard and check your total sticker balance.

[ ] If you are below 15 stickers, claim remaining easy stickers by logging stream check-in codes from live streams or participating in community mini-games during Global Hack Week.

[ ] Cross the 15-sticker mark before October 31 to seal your Completionist status and enter the final t-shirt and hardware raffles!

  6. Essential Links, Hubs & Resources

Bookmark these key resources to navigate Hacktoberfest 2026 smoothly:

📝 DEV Community Challenges: https://dev.to

📺 MLH YouTube Channel (Live Streams & Guides): Search Major League Hacking on YouTube for stream archives and workshop tutorials.
