3:53am Thursday JUNE 22 WAT Lagos NG

It's the third article now omo can you believe that?!😄

I have you to thank, because you read the previous: first & second random gists! Some extra-amazing people even dropped a like or two *whoop! Whatabomshell😁 THANK YOU 🙏 #superGrateful.

So what are we writing about this time? You guessed, I don't know again 🤷‍♀️

I just know I'm typing away because the morale is high on this side.

First of all, I finished my AltSchoolAfrica First Semester Exam 4hours ago *happy dance - the preparation for which was the genesis of all this typing-away to begin with - and thankfully I aced it! 😭 Tears of joy and humbleness because...

That exam humbled me sha whattt? I went at it with so much afraidness mixed with tiredness after all my marathon overnight reading for daysss, consuming different resources not really knowing exactly what difficulty of questions to expect, especially after seeing different AltSchoolers' tales on Slack about how their own exams went.

Many said the questions were hard so I was just moping like haay chim oo while lowkey hoping for easier questions for my own because you know special child of God, Abba's delight, etc etc.

Also when I heard the time allotted was 2hours30mins, I was consoling myself saying relax joor, weytin you wan use 2hrs+ do, maybe 45mins to 1hour max, it can't be that bad.

So imagine my awe when I finally opened the questions and was seeing a lot of tricky questions like is this playing? Mr Setemi did not mention some of these covert angles in class o 😰 Upon all my reading, Abi is this Final Semester Exam instead of First?

Certain questions took me a full 5-10mins to really think through before selecting my answers 🥺 I was just sighing under my breath like God abeg, failure is not an option o, epp your child.

I scored 86% thankfully. Definitely desired a better score like 100% you know, along those lines. Something that would make hackSultan and the entire AltSchool Agba team be like WHO'S THAT GIRL??

(If you sang [LA LA LA LA] I don't know what to say to you 🤦‍♀️😄).

Anyway, I can't be grateful enough e get why.

One of the whys is too recent not to include here 👇

Immediately after the exam few minutes past midnight, one mind said share your score on twitter and tag AltSchool. Other mind was like why? attention-seeking much?

I started convincing myself of the many reasons why not to - it's midnight, everybody is asleep, people are scoring 90+ and you want to show off 86 👀 etc etc, subtle imposter syndrome stuff.

I sha made the screenshot first and stalled for another maybe 30mins, until I finally tweeted. I was about to sleep when Guess what? - JerryUke first liked it, then theCavyDev, then hackSultan???? then other people started liking oo, before I could blink "hackSultan retweeted your what??" I cleaned my eyes! I was flabbergasted 😄 and the twitter love that followed afterwards has been even more tremendous 👇

alert("hackSultan + AltSchool for the win 🎉")

Didn't know what words to say except THANK YOUUU 🙌

I actually can never be grateful enough that's just it, too many reasons.

console.log("I guess that's it on the random gist for now 😊")

If you actually read up to this point, thank you 🙏

I don't know how you do it but for real, you're just so amazing and for that I truly appreciate you ♥︎

Till my maybe next post, have a good time ahead, cheers.

*randomDeets:

It took me 2hours to write this and 90mins to proofread.

As is becoming the custom, I set a timer to see how long reading this would take and guess what - it took 3minutes 😊 Cheers!

Newbie coder  -  3min random gist2

1:36pm Sunday JUNE 18 WAT Lagos NG

It's been 32hours since my very first random gist. I felt lighter from putting my thoughts into words.

Post-publishing though, I did not know how else to feel except cringey. Now here I am writing again 😂

Feeling more motivated this time because the last one got read by some really great humans and omg the love on twitter especially from my Agba mentors - it was tremendous! *goofy dance. Really great feeling tbh.

So what am I typing about now? The answer again - I don't really know🤷‍♀️

To keep the writing fire burning? because "chronic starter" and "procrastinator" issues are real to me and the only way I find myself consistent at anything is by just doing without thinking too much.

Few months ago I joined #EliteWriters, a community on showwcase through a technical-writing-training tweet from @daveyhert & @heyonuoha 👋

Clueless but curious from reading @daveyhert's article on making humongous sums of money from this same technical writing, I joined to soak up knowledge with the intention of starting technical writing asap, but… the procrastinator in me had bigger plans...

When we were asked to vote for hashtags: #EliteWriter or #ShowwcaseWriter, a voice in my head did a wicked laugh as I boldly voted #EliteWriter ✅ The voice said "c'mon remove yourself from that ambition osiiso" but a smaller voice said "stay joor you can do this still".

So I stayed. Listened to some gurus, did some research then concluded that I wanted technical blogging instead of technical writing ✍️

The difference? The former is heavy on writing documentation like manuals for software or products with formal contexts in instructional style, to aid understanding for the users e.g. this simple one, while the latter is more of light-hearted writing about tech related stuff laced with casual contexts in a playful style. More on the differences here.

The latter appealed more to me more so...

console.log("story to be continued another day")

Moving on, I just remembered @samperfect's words this evening at a twitter space hosted by Mide Dickson on building a killer portfolio:

<blockquote>
“The things you know, make sure you really know them
And understand why they behave the way they behave.
The granular things, the basic steps, the fundamentals,
Why document things in one way as opposed to the other,
etc etc”.
</blockquote>

Ok I think I'm done offloading my random thoughts for now.

If you actually read up to this point, thank you 🙏

I don't know how you do it but hmm, you're just so amazing and for that I truly appreciate you ♥︎

Till my maybe next post, have a good time ahead, cheers.

*randomDeets:

It took me 17 long hours to finish this because I got sleepy and slept, woke up, typed some more, gave up, typed again after pep-talking myself, paused and got busy with house chores, picked up again - and finally finished wayyy past midnight 6:05am Monday JUNE 19 WAT 😰

Writing is not an easy thing o! All thou who write regularly, you deserve all your flowers please 🌺

Once again, I set a timer just to see how long reading this would take and guess what - it took 3minutes😊 Not bad? Cheers!

Newbie Coder  -  3min random gist

5:08am Saturday JUNE 17 WAT Lagos NG.

Sequel to finding boss @risingodegua's page on medium, I created a blogging account just now thinking "not bad to document my random thoughts as I journey may way to becoming a bada$$ software engineer".

Prequel to my previous action, I found Rising's twitter and website from a series of twitter profile stalkings and many other online prequels - starting from what point? I'm now trying to rack my brain as I'm typing this.

Ok ok it started from earlier today (or rather yesterday) 6–8pm's Fun Friday Session AltSchoolAfrica where our community manager @tabithakavyu thought out loud the possibility of talking with program manager Jerry Uke about adding Rising to our rescue, for us SOE Version 2 students struggling with JavaScript even though teacher @oluwasetemi is already doing a super-fantastic job on our live classes.

Yeah so I thought to myself at that point, Rising…? Why does the name sound so familiar? Sounded like the name of a mentor I had heard of earlier. Fast-forward to some hours later, I saw a tweet (on twitter - yeah obvs right? don't know why I still typed that 🤷‍♀️ mini perfectionist maybe? also while we're now on the topic, does this happen to you where you type the lowercase letter "i" in "i" or "i'm" when referring to yourself - and you keep going back to change it to uppercase "I"? Is that some sort of perfectionism too? I'm asking for a friend).

Ok back to the gist, so I saw a tweet somewhere captioned "Cooking for tomorrow #OSCAFEST2023, I hope system design is technical enough" which made me smile. So I made a mental note to go read the tweet later and when I opened the tweet, to my greatest surprise - Rising Odegua! It was a no-brainer to sharply open the tweet, open the profile, view other tweets, follow and engage, read comments, devour everything and consume contents on every other profile linked to the profile in one way or the other as much as possible.

Apparently that tweet DID NOT quote any tweet in particular but I thought it was very relatable to another tweet I had seen earlier, about some thoughts on how the oscafest talks line-ups were not technical enough. Oh well.
So what is the point of all this writing now? Me too I don't really know tbh.

I just know I'm typing away at my computer as a way to stress-release myself, because I've been up all the night reading for AltSchool's SOE first semester exam using one CSS Handbook for days now the book no wan finish. And I still have plentyyy LMS content from AltSchool on JavaScript and Data Structures which I'm yet to consume. Also got a tab open for coach @bahdcoder's Open Source webinar for which I'm still in Lesson 1 🤦‍♀️

Deep sigh. This too shall pass.

The struggle to become a proper software engineer, patiently starting from the Frontend is a hooge one, the harsh realities of which become clearer to me with every new day as I realize even more that all those 3–6 month bootcamps and short courses - no offence but they "lied" to us 😩. It really is a steep life-long learning curve, especially while combining it with the challenges of regular non-tech life (and living in Nigeria too? Omo.) Only those who take enough time to understand the right fundamentals and put in the work (with plentyyy reading like Setemi Ojo will say) while working their way up, can make it to the top and stay there, emphasis on stay there.

Anyway, here's to hoping this story will make it past my subtle imposter syndrome and actually get read by another human that is not me, in the nearest future.

If you actually read up to this point, thank you 🙏
I don't know how you do it but wow, you're just so amazing and for that I truly appreciate you ♥︎

Till my maybe next post, have a good time ahead, cheers.

*randomDeets: It took me 30mins to write this + another maybe 90mins to proofread and edit, making 2hours. I put on a timer after typing, to read the whole thing and see how long it would take and guess what - it took 3minutes 😊 Definitely not a perfectionist though. Cheers!
