Choosing IT for 2026?

I graduated with a Diploma in Information Technology.

Not from a four-year Computer Science program.
Not with a perfect roadmap.
Not knowing exactly where it would take me.

I thought I'd end up fixing computers.

Maybe building websites.

Maybe writing code.

Turns out...

Tech is a lot bigger than that.

I started in technical support.

Today, I work with startup founders.

I organize innovation programs.

Design creatives.

Build digital solutions.

Coordinate events.

Support entrepreneurs.

And somehow, all of those things still fall under "working in tech."

Here's my take for 2026:

If you're waiting until you know everything before starting your tech career...

You'll be waiting forever.

The industry changes too fast.

Your first job won't define you.

Your degree won't limit you.

The projects you build, the problems you solve, and the opportunities you say "yes" to will teach you far more than any curriculum ever could.

So, what's the best way to start a career in tech?

It depends...

Not on what course you took—

But on whether you're willing to keep learning after graduation.

One thing I didn't expect while preparing my application was this:

I had to read my own story.

Not the version I tell people in conversations—but the one written across certificates, employment records, volunteer work, event photos, recommendation letters, and countless project documents.

At first, I thought I was just updating a résumé.

Instead, I found myself remembering.

The late nights setting up venues before everyone arrived.

The countless pubmats that had to be finished before sunrise.

The trainings, startup programs, immersion activities, logistics, technical support, and creative work that happened quietly behind the scenes.

The volunteer work that never came with a paycheck but somehow became some of the most valuable experiences I've had.

The people I met because I simply kept saying "yes" to opportunities.

It's funny how we often measure ourselves only by what's next.

We forget that we've already come a long way.

For the longest time, I thought I was "just" an IT person.

But looking back, I've realized I've also become a project coordinator, event organizer, designer, problem solver, volunteer, startup ecosystem builder, and someone trusted to make things happen when they need to happen.

Preparing an application wasn't just about proving I was qualified.

It became a reminder that growth rarely happens in one big moment.

It happens through hundreds of small decisions:

showing up,

learning something new,

helping where you can,

and saying yes even when you're unsure you're ready.

Whether this application leads to the next chapter or not, I'm grateful for what it reminded me:

Sometimes the biggest achievement isn't getting the position.

It's realizing you've already become the person you were working so hard to be.

Everyone’s basically saying:

“Ganito na yan.”
“Follow what already works.”
“Wag na mag-iba.”

But… startups literally exist because someone didn’t follow that advice.

A lot of Filipino founders don’t fit one box — and that’s the point. Tech founders who care about community impact. Creatives building real businesses. Innovators solving very local problems with very new ideas. The ecosystem doesn’t always know what to do with that, so there’s pushback.

Breaking from the norm is uncomfortable — especially when resources are tight and the risk feels personal. But every meaningful startup in the PH started with someone asking, “What if we try something different?”

So no, founders don’t stick to the status quo.
