Introduction

In this article, we will look at how to add custom validation to a form with TailwindCSS. The form is a simple HTML form and can be used on any project that uses TailwindCSS.

  Github

Check out the complete source code here

  Prerequisites

We are required to have TailwindCSS set up in an existing project. If that's not the case, follow this guide to set one up like it was done for this article._

  Basic Form Structure

The form is a simple login form with two input fields and a submit button with added styles from TailwindCSS.

      Email

      Password

    Submit

Our form has two required input fields, and a submit button. Whenever we add a required attribute to input fields, it shows an error like the one below when we try to submit it without completing the fields.

This popup message is not very appealing, varies from browser to browser, and cannot be styled. We will look at how to customize this message to suit our needs.

  Disabling the Default Validation Message

We will use the
novalidate
attribute on the form to disable the default validation message. This attribute will disable the default validation message and allow us to add our own custom validation message.

  Adding Custom Validation to Input Fields

In CSS, we can use the
:invalid
pseudo-class to style an input field when it is invalid. Tailwind CSS also makes it available to us. When it is invalid, we will add a red border to the input field. We can also add a regex pattern to the input field to force a certain style.

  Email

  Password

We use a standard regex pattern for the email field that checks for a valid email address.
For the password field, we use a regex pattern that checks for a password with a minimum of 7 characters.
We chained some tailwind classes to the
invalid
class to style the input field when it is invalid. Let's break this down.

We are using Arbitrary variants to add custom modifiers to the
invalid
class.

:not(:placeholder-shown)
- This will ensure that the input field is not empty. We don't want to show the red border if the input field is empty. Hence, why we are using a space in the placeholder. We can decide to use text like "Enter your email" in the placeholder.

:not(:focus)
- This will ensure that the input field is not focused. We don't want to show the red border if the input field is focused (i.e., the user is currently typing).

  Adding a Custom Validation Message

We will use the
peer
class to add a custom validation message. The
peer
class allows us to style an element based on the state of another element. In this case, we will be styling the

element based on the state of the input field.

  Email

    Please enter a valid email address

We added the
peer
class to the input field and then chained the
peer
class to the arbitrary variants we used for the input field to change the

elements' style from
display: none
to
display: block
when the input field is invalid.

Now, we've added custom validation styles and messages to our form. But we can still submit the form without filling in the fields or when they're invalid. We will be looking at how to prevent the form from being submitted when the fields are empty.

  Preventing Form Submission

We will use the
group
class on the form to prevent the form from being submitted when the fields are empty or invalid. Like the
peer
class, the
group
class allows us to style an element based on the state of the parent element.
Since the input fields are nested inside the form, the form will be invalid when any of the input fields are invalid. We can use this to disable the button and prevent the form from being submitted.

Submit

We use the
:invalid
pseudo-class to style the button when the form is invalid. We also chained the
group-invalid
class to the
pointer-events-none
and
opacity-50
classes to disable the button and make it more transparent when the form is invalid.

  Finished Look

  Conclusion

TailwindCSS makes adding custom validation styles and messages to our forms easy without JavaScript. We can also use JavaScript to add more functionality to our forms. I hope we enjoyed reading this article. Feel free to ask questions in the comments section below.

This article was originally published with Codecademy.

  Introduction

During conversations about data structures in the programming world, the term queue is heard quite often. A queue is a linear data structure that follows the first-in-first-out (FIFO) pattern, i.e., removal takes place at the front, and addition takes place at the end. Think of it as the checkout point at a grocery store. Customers who get to the checkout counter first get attended to first. They can only join the queue from the back of the line, and after they get attended to, they leave from the front of the line.

  Linear data structures

Linear data structures are types of data structures in which elements are stored sequentially. The elements are organized in such a way that each element is directly linked to its previous and next element. However, the first element is only linked to its previous element and the last element is only linked to the next element.

Queues follow this arrangement pattern, and we can see that by referring to our grocery store checkout counter analogy. Each customer that walks to the checkout counter represents an element. The first customer has a link to the previous customer, the last customer has a link to the next customer and every other customer in-between has a link to a previous and next customer.

  Use cases for queues

There are several use cases for queues in the programming and real world. Some of them include the following.

  A desk printer

When you send documents to the printer, they are printed in the same order in which they are sent, and this is very useful when you're trying to print documents that follow a specific order. The printer makes sure the pages don't get mixed up.

  Updating a music player queue

Sometimes, while we are working on a task, we have our go-to songs to keep the momentum going. The queue function of the music player makes sure you listen to your song selections just the way it is arranged.

  Customer service lines

If you go to a bank to file a complaint, they make you wait in lines and the next person in line won't be called unless the issue of the current customer has been resolved.

  File sharing between two processes

When transferring files from one device to another, the files are received on the other end in the same order they were sent, irrespective of the time it takes for any of them to get completed.

  Implementation of queues

Queues can be implemented in any programming language, but our focus is on how to create them using JavaScript. In JavaScript, it can also be implemented in two ways: arrays and linked lists. For this article, we will implement queues using arrays.

  Operations in queues

These are some basic operations that are performed on queues:

Enqueue

Dequeue

Peek

Reversing a queue

For the implementation of the above operations, we’d use an ES6 class and have the various operations as methods.

  Creating a queue with its operations

The first step is to initialize our class with its own storage (an array where our queue elements would be stored):

class Queue {
  constructor() {
    this.queue = [];
  }
}

The code block above represents the creation of a class named
Queue
. The
constructor()
method is a special method of a class that is used to create an object instance of that class. It can be used to initialize any object that would be used across the class methods. The
this
keyword serves as a regular object within this context. It can be used to initialize any value.

Next up, we add each queue operation as a method of the class.

  Enqueue

This term refers to adding a new element to the queue. Since we're implementing our queue with an array, we can use the
.push()
array method to add new elements to the queue.

class Queue {
  constructor() {
    this.queue = [];
  }

  enqueue(element) {
    this.queue.push(element);
  }
}

The added lines to our code block represent a method of class
Queue
. It handles one operation which adds a new item to the array object that is initialized using the
constructor
method.

The
.enqueue()
method accepts one argument
element
and then adds it to
this.queue
using the
.push()
array method.

  Dequeue

This term refers to removing a new element from the queue. Again, the
.shift()
array method takes care of this for us easily.

class Queue {
  constructor() {
    this.queue = [];
  }

  enqueue(element) {
    this.queue.push(element);
  }

  dequeue() {
    return this.queue.shift();
  }
}

We added a new method
.dequeue()
. This method deoesn't accept any arguments unlike the previous method. It returns an element from the front of the queue and also removes it using the
.shift()
array method.

  Peek

We use the
peek()
method to check for the element at the front of the queue, without removing it:

class Queue {
  constructor() {
    this.queue = [];
  }

  enqueue(element) {
    this.queue.push(element);
  }

  dequeue() {
    return this.queue.shift();
  }

  peek() {
    return this.queue[0];
  }
}

The
.peek()
method checks for the value at the front of the queue by accessing the first index of the queue.

  Reversing a Queue

As the title implies, we are simply trying to change the order of the queue from back to front. The
.reverse()
method is handled using a while loop and the
.pop()
array method.

class Queue {
  constructor() {
    this.queue = [];
  }

  enqueue(element) {
    this.queue.push(element);
    return this.queue;
  }

  dequeue() {
    return this.queue.shift();
  }

  peek() {
    return this.queue[0];
  }

  reverse() {
    // Declare an empty array
    const reversed = [];

    // Iterate through the array using a while loop
    while (this.queue.length > 0) {
      reversed.push(this.queue.pop());
    }
    // Set queue using the new array
    this.queue = reversed;
    return this.queue;
  }
}

  Usage

To see how our code works, we are going to test out each method of our
Queue
class.

First, we need to create a new instance of our class. Then, we will use it to access our methods:

// Creating a new instance of our class
const result = new Queue();

// Adding elements
result.enqueue(5);
result.enqueue(3);
result.enqueue(4);
result.enqueue(7);
console.log("After adding elements:", result.queue);

// Removing an element
result.dequeue();
console.log("After removing an element:", result.queue);

// Checking the first element in the queue
console.log("After peeking:", result.peek());

// Reversing the queue
console.log("After reversing the queue:", result.reverse());

After multiple operations are performed on our
result
queue, we get the following output in the console:

After adding elements: [ 5, 3, 4, 7 ]
After removing an element: [ 3, 4, 7 ]
After peeking: 3
After reverse: [ 7, 4, 3 ]
