PHP2Shell: How to Patch PHP and Verify Every Running Worker

An updated PHP package on disk is only part of a security fix. You also need to know which PHP runtime serves each application—and whether its workers are actually running the patched build.

PHP2Shell is the name used for CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, two critical vulnerabilities in PHP itself. This guide focuses on identifying, patching and verifying deployments.

Information checked: 23 October 2026. A separate follow-up notice published that day is covered below. Follow the linked advisories for subsequent changes.

  Start with the fixed versions

Branch

Affected upstream releases within branch

First fixed release

PHP 8.5

Earlier than 8.5.12

8.5.12

PHP 8.4

Earlier than 8.4.27

8.4.27

PHP 8.3

Earlier than 8.3.36

8.3.36

PHP 8.2

Earlier than 8.2.35

8.2.35

Compare versions within their branch. PHP 8.3.35 does not contain the fix just because its version number is higher than 8.2.35.

Sources: PHP's OOM corruption advisory and stale global state advisory.

For distribution packages, inspect the full package revision and the vendor's security notice. Vendors may backport fixes without changing the upstream base version. A banner alone cannot settle that question.

PHP 8.1 and earlier are outside normal upstream support. PHP exceptionally supplied minimal source backports for 7.4, 8.0 and 8.1, but that does not restore normal maintenance. See the PHP security notices. PHP 8.2 security support ends on 31 December 2026, according to the official support schedule.

What is confirmed about the vulnerabilities?

Both advisories assign CVSS v4.0 9.2, Critical.

CVE-2026-109618 concerns out-of-memory handling. An interrupted operation can leave partially initialised request data that cleanup later processes incorrectly. PHP documents validated unauthenticated code execution against Apache mod_php. Its advisory describes FPM susceptibility from source analysis, without a complete demonstrated FPM exploit for this particular flaw.

CVE-2026-109619 concerns request state retained after its backing memory is freed. A subsequent request handled by the same worker can access that stale state. PHP documents validated session lifecycle RCE against mod_php and FPM, with application prerequisites for the FPM path. Memory disclosure is also a confirmed impact.

Successful execution uses the web worker's privileges. That is serious, but it does not automatically establish root access. Build details, configuration and application behaviour affect exploitability. Read the OOM advisory and stale-state advisory for the distinctions.

Build an inventory you can actually close

Field

Evidence needed

Application

Hostname, environment and responsible team

Runtime

PHP branch, handler and executable or image

Package source

Distribution, control panel or appliance vendor

Fix evidence

Fixed release or vendor notice covering both CVEs

Deployment evidence

Package revision, restart time or image identifier

Verification

Application checks and remaining exceptions

Include staging sites, old campaign domains, administrative interfaces and vendor software that bundles PHP. Give containers their own records when they have a separate release process.

ProjectDiscovery's discovery guide highlights PHP hidden behind non-standard ports, subdirectories and administration tools. Its version-checking Nuclei template uses advertised version information. That is a discovery lead, not a successful exploitation test—and a missing header does not prove PHP is absent.

Verify the runtime, not just your shell

These commands provide a starting point:

php -v
php --ini

They describe the PHP binary resolved in that shell. Your website may use another installation, an FPM pool configured for a different branch, or PHP inside a container.

My recommended sequence is:

Map each virtual host to its actual handler or upstream.

Identify the executable, package revision or container image behind it.

Apply the vendor-approved update.

Restart the relevant workers, or rebuild and redeploy the container.

Verify every origin, pool and replica.

Exercise the application through its normal production hostname.

ProjectDiscovery also stresses that installing the updated package does not replace an already-running worker.

For application checks, cover login, forms, uploads, checkout, API calls and scheduled jobs as applicable. Record the results rather than relying on a single successful homepage request.

For a branch migration, also test extensions and encoded applications. A rollback plan should include a way to restrict access if returning to the previous build would reintroduce exposure.

Understand the attack timeline without overstating it

Date

Observation

Limit of the evidence

17 October

Amazon retrospectively identified an exploitation attempt in MadPot telemetry

A honeypot observation, not proof of a customer compromise

20 October

Huntress documented leaked details; PHP announced the emergency release

The public warning preceded the patches

21 October, 02:00–08:00 UTC

Amazon observed further attempts

Real-world success was unclear

21 October

PHP released the four emergency builds

Announced time: 14:00 UTC; availability reports indicate slightly earlier

After disclosure

Amazon observed broader attempts

An attempt remains distinct from confirmed compromise

Sources: Amazon's primary telemetry report, Huntress's dated response, Upsun's rollout timeline and PHP's notices.

Huntress reported no observed exploitation in its partner systems as of 16:30 ET on 21 October. That does not contradict Amazon's observations: they describe different monitoring populations.

SecurityWeek's coverage highlights the pre-patch activity. For incident decisions, use Amazon's precise qualification: success against real-world systems was uncertain. The early activity does not establish how anyone acquired the exploit information.

Temporary mitigations need an expiry date

If patching is blocked, consider restricting access upstream or serving a static response that does not invoke PHP. Assign an owner and a deadline to the exception.

PHP documents partial configuration measures:

For the OOM flaw, administratively enforcing
memory_limit=-1
removes a controllable PHP memory-limit failure. Underlying allocation failures remain possible. Assess availability implications, request limits and container or cgroup boundaries. PHP warns against substituting
RLIMIT_AS
or
RLIMIT_DATA
.

For confirmed stale-state paths, disable session upload progress administratively and restart workers. PHP 8.5 can also disable
fatal_error_backtraces
. These controls do not cover every variant.

Consult the OOM mitigation instructions and stale-state mitigation instructions before changing configuration.

A WordPress maintenance plugin operates within the application. It cannot be relied on for a path triggered earlier. An upstream WAF can block selected requests before PHP, but coverage depends on its rules and whether the origin is reachable directly.

xCloud and Upsun describe mitigation followed by runtime patching. Their reports apply to their own platforms and stated exceptions. Request evidence for your specific deployment.

  Review PHP's separate 23 October follow-up

PHP suggests setting
session.upload_progress.enabled=0
until the next regular bugfix release for a separate, unusual configuration issue.

The relevant application configures
session.serialize_handler
as
php_binary
or
php_serialize
, switches it to
php
at runtime with
ini_set()
before
session_start()
, and leaves upload progress enabled. PHP identifies the follow-up as CVE-2026-115560, with a full advisory planned for the next release. Applications that never switch the handler at runtime may retain the feature, according to the notice.

See PHP's 23 October informational advisory. Distinguish this follow-up from the original two CVEs and their fixed releases.

Patching and incident response are separate tasks

As an operational precaution, retain relevant proxy, application, PHP and security logs before they expire. Include time before public disclosure in the review because Amazon's observations predate it.

Investigate unexpected worker child processes, changed executable files, unfamiliar administrator accounts, scheduled tasks and unusual outbound connections. Correlate evidence: a blocked request or an error spike alone does not establish compromise.

If evidence supports an intrusion, isolate the affected service and follow your incident-response process. Preserve evidence, recover from a trusted baseline and rotate exposed secrets from a clean system after containment.

A useful question for your host

Which PHP build serves each of my sites, does it address both CVEs, when were workers restarted, and are staging, containers and bundled runtimes included? Has the 23 October follow-up been assessed?

ARO's analysis emphasises asset ownership and decision speed. Those are useful operational lessons: the patch rollout is much easier when you already know who owns every deployment.

For the expanded hosting checklist and FAQs, see the original DigitalBerg PHP2Shell guide. For WordPress deployment planning, DigitalBerg also has a WordPress VPS guide.

Discussion: What evidence does your team require before marking a runtime security update complete—package installation, worker replacement, application checks, or all three?

Bastillion vs Nexterm vs Xterm vs Remmina: Which SSH Tool Is Best in 2026?

An SSH client comparison for Linux administrators, DevOps engineers, developers and infrastructure teams.

Managing remote Linux servers is part of the daily work of developers and system administrators. Whether you run a single VPS, maintain a fleet of dedicated servers, or manage cloud infrastructure, the right SSH tool can boost productivity and security.

But not all SSH tools solve the same problem.

Bastillion, Nexterm, Xterm and Remmina offer different approaches to remote access. Some focus on browser-based access, others on graphical remote desktop connections, and others provide a lightweight terminal environment.

In this guide, we'll compare their strengths, limitations, security considerations and practical use cases to help you choose the right tool in 2026.

Quick Answer: Which SSH Tool Should You Choose?

Bastillion: Consider it when your team needs centrally managed, browser-based SSH access with administrative controls.

Nexterm: Consider it when you want a modern, self-hosted web interface for managing remote connections.

Xterm: Choose a terminal emulator when you prefer traditional command-line workflows with OpenSSH.

Remmina: Choose it when you need SSH alongside graphical remote desktop protocols such as RDP and VNC.

There is no universal winner. The best tool depends on your infrastructure, operating system, security requirements and preferred workflow.

  1. Understanding the Four SSH Tools

Bastillion: Centralised SSH Access for Teams

Bastillion is a web-based SSH console designed for managing remote server access through a central interface.

Rather than distributing direct SSH access across numerous administrators' workstations, organisations can use a centrally managed access layer.

Potential benefits include:

Browser-based access to remote systems.

Centralised administration of SSH connections.

Role-based access management.

A more consistent workflow for teams managing multiple servers.

Administrative visibility into remote access activity, depending on configuration and version.

Considerations:

A centralised SSH gateway becomes a security-sensitive component. Its authentication, patching, network exposure, audit logs and availability need careful management.

Bastillion may be particularly useful for infrastructure teams that want greater control over how administrators access production servers.

Nexterm: Modern Web-Based Remote Connection Management

Nexterm is a self-hosted remote connection management application designed around a modern browser interface.

It is worth evaluating when administrators want to organise connections and access remote systems without maintaining separate terminal profiles on every workstation.

Potential benefits include:

A browser-oriented remote management experience.

Centralised organisation of server connections.

Convenient access from supported devices.

A self-hosted deployment model.

A user interface designed for managing multiple remote systems.

Exact authentication options, supported protocols and administrative capabilities depend on the Nexterm release and deployment configuration. Verify the project's current documentation before selecting it for production use.

Considerations:

Self-hosting means your team is responsible for securing the application, updating dependencies, protecting stored credentials and configuring HTTPS correctly.

Xterm: Traditional Terminal Access on Linux and Unix

Xterm is a terminal emulator for the X Window System.

An important distinction: Xterm is not itself an SSH client. It provides a terminal window in which you can run OpenSSH or other command-line programs.

For example:

ssh admin@example-server.com

You can also specify a custom SSH port:

ssh -p 2222 admin@example-server.com

Why administrators still use traditional terminal workflows:

Lightweight, keyboard-driven operation.

Compatibility with standard Unix command-line tools.

Easy integration with SSH configuration files.

Support for scripting and automation through external tools.

No need to deploy a separate web-based SSH management application.

For Linux administrators comfortable with the command line, Xterm plus OpenSSH remains a straightforward option.

Remmina: SSH and Remote Desktop Management

Remmina is a remote desktop client commonly used on Linux systems.

Unlike a basic terminal emulator, Remmina is particularly useful when your work involves graphical remote systems.

Depending on installed plugins and configuration, Remmina supports protocols including RDP, VNC and SSH.

Advantages include:

A graphical connection manager.

Support for multiple remote access protocols.

Saved connection profiles.

Convenient access to Windows and Linux environments.

Useful workflows for mixed operating-system infrastructure.

If your organization manages Linux servers and Windows desktops, Remmina can reduce the need to switch between separate remote access applications.

  2. Bastillion vs Nexterm vs Xterm vs Remmina: Feature Comparison

Bastillion

Nexterm

Xterm + OpenSSH

Remmina

Centralized access management

Core use case

Deployment-dependent

No, not built in

No, not its primary purpose

Remote desktop support

Not primary focus

Check current release

No built-in RDP/VNC

Yes, through supported plugins

Requires a separately hosted management application

Yes

Yes

No

No

Suitable for individual Linux users

Possible

Possible

Excellent

Good

Suitable for teams

Strong centralized use case

Worth evaluating

Requires external management

Useful for individual connection management

This comparison focuses on the tools' architectural differences. Features can change between releases, so confirm specific capabilities against the current project documentation.

  3. Security: Which Approach Is Safer?

Security should be one of your top considerations when selecting remote access software.

However, security depends more on the deployment than the product name.

  SSH keys instead of passwords

Where possible, use public-key authentication.

Generate an Ed25519 key pair on a trusted workstation:

ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -C "admin@example.com"

Then install the public key on the remote server using an approved method, such as:

ssh-copy-id admin@example-server.com

Never share your private key or upload it to an untrusted remote management service.

  Verify SSH host keys

The first time you connect to a server, verify its SSH host key fingerprint using a trusted source.

Do not automatically accept unexpected host-key changes. They can indicate a legitimate server rebuild, but they can also signal a man-in-the-middle attack.

  Protect browser-based SSH platforms

For Bastillion and Nexterm deployments:

Use HTTPS with valid certificates.

Restrict administrative access through a VPN, private network or carefully configured access gateway where feasible.

Enable strong authentication and MFA if supported by the deployment.

Apply application and operating-system security updates.

Limit user privileges to what administrators actually need.

Protect stored credentials, backups and application secrets.

Monitor authentication events and unusual access activity.

Avoid exposing an administrative SSH gateway publicly without a clear security design.

  Protect direct SSH access

For OpenSSH-based access:

Prefer SSH keys over reusable passwords.

Disable direct root login where operationally appropriate.

Use individual administrator accounts.

Apply least-privilege sudo policies.

Restrict network access with firewalls or VPNs.

Keep the operating system and OpenSSH updated.

Monitor SSH authentication logs.

Important: A browser-based SSH gateway does not automatically make a server more secure than direct OpenSSH access. It changes the access architecture and introduces its own security responsibilities.

  4. Installing and Using SSH on Linux

For many administrators, OpenSSH is the simplest starting point.

  Ubuntu and Debian

Install the OpenSSH client:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install openssh-client

Connect to your server:

ssh username@server-ip

  Fedora

Install the OpenSSH client:

sudo dnf install openssh-clients

  Save frequently used SSH connections

Instead of repeatedly typing IP addresses and usernames, create or edit:

~/.ssh/config

Example:

Host production-vps
    HostName 203.0.113.10
    User deploy
    Port 22
    IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519
    IdentitiesOnly yes

Then connect using:

ssh production-vps

The example IP address is reserved for documentation. Replace it with your actual server address.

This approach works with OpenSSH from terminal emulators such as Xterm.

  5. Managing Multiple VPS and Dedicated Servers

Imagine a small infrastructure team managing:

Five Linux VPS instances.

Two dedicated servers.

One staging server.

A backup server.

Several administrator accounts.

Which approach makes sense?

Scenario A: One administrator managing a few servers

A local terminal emulator with OpenSSH is often sufficient.

Use SSH configuration aliases, key-based authentication and standard monitoring tools.

Scenario B: Multiple administrators managing production systems

A centralized SSH management platform may simplify access administration.

Bastillion is worth evaluating for this use case, particularly where access controls and administrative oversight matter.

Scenario C: A team wanting a modern web interface

Nexterm may be appealing if the team prefers browser-based connection management and is prepared to maintain the application securely.

Scenario D: A mixed Linux and Windows environment

Remmina is useful when administrators regularly connect to graphical desktops through RDP or VNC while also using SSH.

  6. Performance and Resource Considerations

An SSH client generally uses relatively little bandwidth for interactive terminal sessions.

Performance differences become more noticeable when introducing additional components, such as:

A browser-based management interface.

A reverse proxy.

An SSH gateway.

Session logging.

Additional authentication services.

Containerized application infrastructure.

A traditional OpenSSH session has fewer intermediary components than a browser-based session routed through a hosted gateway.

That does not necessarily mean a browser-based tool will feel slow. Network latency, server load, proxy configuration and application performance can all affect responsiveness.

For large fleets, measure actual connection latency, resource consumption and operational reliability before committing to a platform.

  7. Common SSH Problems and Troubleshooting

  Problem: Connection timed out

Example:

ssh: connect to host example.com port 22: Connection timed out

Possible causes include:

The server is offline.

A firewall blocks the SSH port.

The SSH service is not listening.

A cloud security group denies inbound connections.

The hostname resolves to the wrong IP address.

Network routing or filtering prevents access.

Start by checking the target hostname, port and network rules.

  Problem: Permission denied (publickey)

Example:

Permission denied (publickey).

Check that:

You are using the correct username.

The server has the matching public key.

Your private key is accessible.

Your SSH configuration references the correct identity file.

Server-side permissions and SSH policy allow the connection.

For more detailed diagnostics:

ssh -vvv username@example-server.com

Verbose output may include sensitive infrastructure details, so review it before sharing with others.

Problem: SSH works locally but not through a web gateway

Check the gateway's network reachability, authentication configuration, application logs and permissions.

Remember that a web-based gateway may connect from a different IP address than your workstation. The destination server's firewall must allow the intended gateway traffic.

  8. Which Tool Should DevOps Engineers Use?

The answer depends on the workflow.

For command-line automation: OpenSSH is a strong foundation. It works well with shell scripts, configuration management tools and CI/CD workflows.

For centralized interactive access: Bastillion or Nexterm may be worth evaluating, depending on your administrative and security requirements.

For graphical remote administration: Remmina is useful when your work includes desktop access.

A common production setup combines more than one approach. For example, a team may use OpenSSH for automated deployments, a controlled access gateway for interactive administration, and Remmina for graphical troubleshooting.

  9. Choosing a Hosting Environment for SSH Management

Whichever SSH tool you select, reliable server infrastructure remains important.

Before deploying a remote access management application, consider:

CPU and RAM requirements.

Operating-system compatibility.

Network latency.

Public versus private network access.

Backup and disaster recovery requirements.

Firewall configuration.

Monitoring and audit logging.

High availability where required.

For smaller deployments, a VPS may be sufficient. Larger or security-sensitive environments may benefit from dedicated infrastructure or a carefully designed private management network.

At DigitalBerg, we publish technical resources covering VPS hosting, dedicated servers, infrastructure security and practical server administration.

  10. Frequently Asked Questions

  Is Bastillion better than OpenSSH?

They serve different purposes. OpenSSH provides secure remote connectivity, while Bastillion adds a centralized web-based access layer. Bastillion may be useful for team administration, but it introduces infrastructure that must be secured and maintained.

Is Nexterm suitable for production servers?

It may be, depending on the release, deployment architecture and security configuration. Evaluate authentication, credential handling, access controls, maintenance status and recovery procedures before production deployment.

Can Xterm connect to a remote Linux server?

Yes. Xterm provides a terminal window in which you can run an SSH client such as OpenSSH.

  Does Remmina support SSH?

Yes. Remmina supports SSH through its available protocol functionality and plugins. It is also useful for graphical remote desktop connections.

Which SSH tool is best for beginners?

A graphical connection manager such as Remmina may feel more approachable for users who prefer visual interfaces. Learning the basics of OpenSSH is still valuable for Linux server administration.

Can I manage multiple dedicated servers with SSH?

Yes. You can use OpenSSH configuration profiles, a centralized access platform or a combination of both. Choose an approach that fits your security and operational needs.

  Are browser-based SSH tools secure?

They can be secure when properly designed and maintained. Use strong authentication, encrypted connections, restricted network exposure, updates, logging and least-privilege access. Avoid assuming that browser access is inherently safer.

Final Verdict: Which SSH Tool Is Best in 2026?

If you prefer a lightweight, traditional Linux workflow, Xterm with OpenSSH is a practical choice.

If you need centralized access for a team, Bastillion deserves consideration.

If you prefer a modern self-hosted connection management interface, Nexterm is worth evaluating.

If you regularly manage remote desktops as well as SSH connections, Remmina may be the most convenient option.

The right decision depends on whether your priority is simplicity, centralized administration, browser-based convenience or graphical remote access.

Whatever you choose, secure authentication, least-privilege access, monitoring and regular updates matter more than the interface alone.
