Word to PDF Without Losing Formatting — What Actually Works

Nothing's more annoying than a converted PDF where the margins drift and
the fonts swap. Here's what preserves fidelity:

LibreOffice "Export as PDF" — gold standard offline, respects layout.

Microsoft Word's own "Save as PDF" — fine for simple docs.

A web converter that uses a real layout engine, e.g.
https://www.master-converter.com/en/tools/word-pdf?utm_source=devto&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=social_seo_w2
(pay-per-file, no sub — good if you only convert occasionally)

Common gotchas:

Embedded fonts missing on the source machine → substitution. Always embed fonts.

Complex tables → test a sample page first.

Very large docs → split then convert if a tool times out.

If formatting breaks, fall back to Option 1. It rarely does.

How to Merge PDF Files Without Adobe or a Subscription

Most people need to merge PDFs maybe a handful of times a year — yet the
default advice is "get a $10/mo subscription." You don't need that.

Option 1: Your operating system (free, offline)

macOS: open in Preview → thumbnails → drag to reorder → Export as PDF

Windows: Print → "Microsoft Print to PDF" (one file at a time, limited)

Option 2: A pay-as-you-go web tool
If you want a browser solution without a monthly bill, PDF Converter's
merge tool lets you combine files and pay only for what you process:
https://www.master-converter.com/en/tools/pdf-merge?utm_source=devto&utm_medium=article&utm_campaign=social_seo_w1

Option 3: Desktop freeware (PDF24) for heavy/offline use.

When NOT to use a web tool: confidential legal/financial docs you can't
upload. Do those offline.

Bottom line: match the tool to your frequency. Occasional user? Skip the
subscription.
