PC gaming security has changed significantly with Windows 11.

Features such as TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, UEFI firmware, signed drivers, and hardware-backed security are becoming increasingly relevant to modern games and anti-cheat systems.

For PC gamers, this means that an anti-cheat error or game launch problem is not always caused by the game itself. Sometimes the issue comes from Windows security settings, motherboard firmware, drivers, or BIOS configuration.

 What Is TPM 2.0?

TPM stands for Trusted Platform Module.

It is a security component that Windows uses to store cryptographic information and help verify the integrity of a computer.

Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 as part of its minimum system requirements.

On most modern PCs, TPM is implemented through motherboard or processor firmware rather than through a separate physical chip.

For gaming, TPM can provide anti-cheat systems with an additional way to verify that the Windows environment meets certain security requirements.

 What Is Secure Boot?

Secure Boot is a UEFI security feature.

Its purpose is to help ensure that trusted software loads during the computer's startup process.

Before Windows starts, Secure Boot can verify whether boot-level software has a trusted digital signature.

This is relevant to gaming security because some malicious tools attempt to operate before or below the normal Windows environment.

Secure Boot gives Windows and security software another layer of protection against that type of activity.

Why Anti-Cheat Systems Care About Windows Security

Older anti-cheat systems were often associated mainly with scanning running processes or looking for known software signatures.

Modern systems can use a much wider range of signals.

Depending on the game, those signals can include:

Windows security configuration

driver integrity

Secure Boot status

TPM availability

BIOS and UEFI configuration

device information

virtualization-based security

account and behavioral signals

There is no single anti-cheat configuration used by every PC game.

That is why one game may launch normally while another produces a security-related error on the exact same computer.

 Fortnite Is a Good Example

Competitive Fortnite shows how closely PC gaming security is becoming connected with Windows security.

Epic Games requires TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot for Windows players participating in certain competitive tournament environments.

That does not mean every Fortnite player needs the same requirements for ordinary gameplay.

However, it demonstrates that Windows security settings are increasingly becoming part of competitive gaming integrity checks.

Windows 11 Gives Games a Stronger Security Baseline

Windows 11 was designed around newer security requirements.

Two important parts of that baseline are:

TPM 2.0

and

Secure Boot-capable UEFI firmware

Because modern Windows computers are expected to support these technologies, game developers can increasingly use them as part of security and anti-cheat validation.

This creates a more consistent environment than older Windows versions where hardware and firmware configurations varied significantly.

An Anti-Cheat Error Does Not Automatically Mean a Ban

One of the biggest misconceptions in PC gaming is that every anti-cheat error means an account or computer has been banned.

That is not true.

Many normal technical problems can produce anti-cheat or launch errors.

Common causes include:

TPM being disabled

Secure Boot being disabled

Legacy or CSM boot mode

outdated motherboard BIOS

old chipset drivers

corrupted anti-cheat files

incompatible device drivers

Windows update problems

firmware configuration issues

Troubleshooting those problems should normally come before assuming the system has been restricted.

 How to Check TPM 2.0

Windows includes a built-in TPM management tool.

Press:

Windows + R

Then enter:

tpm.msc

Windows will show whether a compatible TPM is available.

For a Windows 11 PC, the specification version should normally show 2.0.

 How to Check Secure Boot

Press:

Windows + R

Enter:

msinfo32

Find:

Secure Boot State

If it shows On, Secure Boot is currently enabled.

If it shows Off, the setting may need to be enabled through the computer's UEFI or BIOS configuration.

Be careful when changing BIOS settings. Incorrect firmware configuration can prevent Windows from booting correctly.

Requirements Are Different for Every Game

There is no universal TPM, Secure Boot, or anti-cheat requirement that applies to every PC game.

For example, Fortnite, Rust, Apex Legends, ARC Raiders, and VALORANT all use different anti-cheat technologies and have different Windows security requirements.

Because these requirements change over time, I created a regularly updated reference that compares them game by game.

 PC Gaming Anti-Cheat & Windows 11 Compatibility Database (2026)

https://divinedigital.cc/blogs/guides/pc-game-anti-cheat-windows-11-database-2026

The database tracks information such as:

anti-cheat system

Windows compatibility

TPM 2.0 requirements

Secure Boot requirements

major anti-cheat changes

common compatibility considerations

Why This Matters for PC Gamers

Troubleshooting PC games is becoming more complicated.

The issue may no longer be limited to the game installation itself.

Players increasingly need to consider:

Windows configuration

BIOS and UEFI settings

motherboard firmware

drivers

TPM

Secure Boot

anti-cheat installation health

Understanding these technologies helps separate normal compatibility issues from actual account or security enforcement.

 Final Thoughts

TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are becoming more important parts of the Windows gaming ecosystem.

They are not required by every game, and anti-cheat systems do not all work the same way.

However, the broader trend is clear: modern game security is becoming increasingly connected to the security features already built into Windows and PC hardware.

For PC gamers, understanding these settings can make troubleshooting game launch and anti-cheat problems much easier.
