This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 3: Slow and Steady

  What I Built

October 20, is International Sloth Day. Sloths have life figured out: move at your own pace, conserve your energy, and avoid unnecessary effort.

Yet every developer and knowledge worker's laptop is plagued by the same chaotic mess: a
Downloads
or
Desktop
folder jammed with files like:

Screenshot 2026-10-21 at 2.45.19 PM.png

INV_98242_oct_final_v2.txt

my_updated_resume_draft_FINAL(1).txt

coffee_shop_bill_scan.txt

`temp_fix_database_conn.py

  Demo

{% embed https://youtu.be/gHe1qCK4zpg %}

  Code

{% embed https://github.com/diwakarsingh07/SlothSort-hacktoberfest-challenge-3.git %}

  How I Built It

SlothSort is designed around open-source AI and local inference:

  1. Open-Weight Models & Local Inference

At the core of SlothSort is the ability to run inference locally via Ollama using compact, open-weight models such as Llama 3.2 (3B), Qwen 2.5 (3B / 7B), or Mistral-7B.
These models are fast, run smoothly on consumer laptop hardware (CPUs or modest GPUs), and offer structured JSON mode output to enforce consistent schemas:

json
{
"new_name": "Invoice_2026-10_ACME_Cloud_Services.txt",
"target_folder": "Financial_and_Receipts",
"reasoning": "Identified recurring cloud compute invoice details and total amount due.",
"confidence": 0.95
}

  2. Multi-Provider Fallback Cascade

To guarantee maximum resilience, SlothSort implements an intelligent cascade:

Primary: Local Ollama service (runs 100% locally with open weights).

Secondary: Google Cloud AI / Gemini (
gemini-1.5-flash
) for ultra-fast cloud multimodal processing.

Tertiary Backup: Groq (
llama-3.3-70b-versatile
) for sub-second open model cloud inference.

Offline Safety Net: A built-in heuristic classifier that guarantees zero-latency execution even when offline with no models running.

  3. Non-Destructive File Transactions

Because laziness shouldn't mean losing files, every move operation creates a transaction record in
.slothsort_history.json
. If a user ever wants their clutter back, a single click restores every file to its original name and path.

  Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation is what makes SlothSort practical and trustworthy:

Absolute Privacy for Sensitive Documents:
Your
Downloads
and
Desktop
folders hold your most sensitive personal data: tax forms, salary slips, medical receipts, confidential work contracts, and personal photos. Sending every single file to closed commercial APIs creates severe privacy and compliance risks. With open-weight models running on Ollama, your data never leaves your machine.

Zero Cost Forever:
A background watcher scanning hundreds of messy files every week would quickly rack up token fees on proprietary cloud APIs. Open-source models run locally on your laptop for $0.00.

Offline Autonomy:
Whether you are on a long flight without Wi-Fi or working in a remote cabin, open-source AI runs entirely offline.

Model Freedom:
You aren't locked into one vendor. You can swap between Llama 3.2, Qwen 2.5, Gemma 2, or fine-tuned local models with a single setting.

  The Lazy Payoff

Manually reviewing and organizing a cluttered 50-file downloads folder typically takes 20 to 30 minutes of tedious clicking, opening, renaming, and dragging.

With SlothSort:

Time spent: 3 seconds (one click on "Tidy Up Now").

Energy expended: Zero.

Result: Receipts filed under
Financial_and_Receipts
, screenshots timestamped under
Screenshots
, resumes saved under
Career_and_Resume
, and code filed under
Developer_Code
.

Channel your inner sloth, save your energy, and let open-source AI do the chores! 🦥

🍽️ RestoCopilot AI: The Dual-Engine Autonomous Restaurant OS That Saves Margins, Kitchens, and Reputations

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle

  What I Built

Independent restaurants operate on razor-thin 5–10% profit margins. Three silent bleeders kill them every single month:

Perishable Food Waste: Over-prepping and untracked ingredient spoilage eats up to 15% of food expenditure.

Kitchen Order Chaos: Paper tickets tear, kitchen printers jam during Saturday dinner rushes, and waiters waste crucial minutes manually checking with chefs if low-stock dishes can still be cooked.

Public Review Disasters: A single cold dish or delayed naan turns into a stinging 1-star review on Google Maps before the manager even knows what went wrong.

RestoCopilot AI is an all-in-one, local-first restaurant operating system designed as a high-margin, plug-and-play SaaS side hustle ($49–$99/month per location).

  Key Operational Capabilities:

🎙️ Voice-Activated Kitchen Display (KDS): Hands-free studio voice announcements for incoming orders using ElevenLabs and offline fallback, freeing chefs from staring at greasy paper tickets.

⚡ Automated Recipe Bill of Materials (BOM) Deduction: Parses order tickets in natural language and automatically deducts gram-accurate raw ingredients (Paneer, Dough, Poultry, Vegetables) from the local SQLite inventory vault.

🥦 Perishable Stock Watchdog & Counter Stock Editor: Tracks live stock levels, shelf-life expiries, and safety buffer thresholds. Enables billing counter staff to log shipments and edit inventory on the fly, while an AI "Zero-Waste Chalkboard Special" synthesizer creates high-margin daily specials from near-expiry ingredients.

🔄 "Never Say No" Substitution Maker: When an ingredient runs out during a rush, the engine formulates delicious culinary alternatives and instant waiter upsell pitches in under 400ms—never turning away a paying guest.

🛡️ Review Sentiment Triage & Google Maps SMS Shield: Directly connects to Google Maps reviews via SerpApi, and arms the billing counter with a 1-tap checkout SMS tool. Delighted guests receive direct Google 5-Star review links + loyalty perks; diners who experienced service hiccups are seamlessly routed to a private manager direct line with an apology dessert voucher to shield public ratings!

⚡ How It Works Under The Hood

🌟 Executive Overview

Commercial restaurants run on razor-thin margins and chaotic communication loops. Orders placed at the front-of-house often fail to account for perishable ingredient stocks, kitchen printers jam during peak rush, and negative reviews on Google Maps inflict permanent…

  How I Built It

RestoCopilot AI is architected around a resilient, hybrid local-first design:

  1. The Dual-Engine Open-Source AI Architecture

Restaurant POS terminals frequently lose internet connectivity, and restaurant owners refuse to pay per-token cloud LLM fees for every butter naan ordered.

We engineered a Dual-Engine Model Switcher:

Offline Edge Mode (Default): Runs a fine-tuned, low-footprint Llama-3.2 local model running directly on the POS hardware. It parses tickets, matches recipe BOMs, and outputs substitution pitches in zero milliseconds at zero marginal cost.

Online Reasoning Mode: Harnesses open-weights Gemma-4-31B-IT hosted on high-throughput AMD Instinct MI300X vLLM infrastructure for complex diner dispute mediation, creative seasonal menu formulation, and multi-dish sensory pairings.

  2. Speech Synthesis & Telecom Carrier Stack

Voice KDS: Powered by ElevenLabs Neural Speech API with instant fallback to local
gTTS
to guarantee audio announcements never drop.

Live SMS Carrier Engine: Integrates Twilio REST carrier messaging with automated pre-approved template resolution (
sms_order_confirmation
) and Indian Telecom SMSIndiaHub DLT routes.

Live Reputation Stream: Directly pulls and audits real Google Maps reviews via SerpApi.

  Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation and open-weight AI models were not just an option for RestoCopilot AI—they were the only viable way this project could exist as a real-world side hustle:

Protecting Razor-Thin Margins: Traditional closed APIs (like GPT-4o) charge per token. If a busy restaurant processes 400 orders, 80 stock queries, and 50 review checks daily, proprietary API bills quickly erase the SaaS margin. Open-weight models (Llama-3.2 and Gemma 31B) can be hosted on local silicon or fixed-cost edge instances, driving marginal inference cost down to $0.00.

Air-Gapped Kitchen Reliability: In the middle of an intense dinner rush, a storm or ISP outage cannot stop the kitchen from cooking. Because our open-weight model runs locally, the kitchen continues firing tickets, speaking voice announcements, and tracking stock completely offline.

Data Sovereignty: Restaurant owner recipes, supplier wholesale costs, customer mobile phone numbers, and dining receipts remain stored on the local premises inside an encrypted SQLite database—never ingested by proprietary AI companies to train competing models.

  My First User

During development, I piloted RestoCopilot AI with Aman Sharma, owner of a 42-seat neighborhood cafe and grill that struggled with weekend naans and paneer shortages.

"We had two major headaches: our kitchen printer constantly choked on grease, and we would run out of marinated paneer on busy Saturday nights without the front counter knowing. With RestoCopilot, our cooks hear the orders called out immediately over the speaker, and our waiters are prompted with instant substitution ideas that actually sell.

Best of all, the checkout SMS feature helped us generate twelve new 5-star Google reviews in our first weekend while catching an unhappy customer privately before they posted online. This easily saves us ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 every single month in food waste and lost tables."

Aman committed to a paid recurring subscription of some amount/month for his location.

🏆 1. Overall Challenge Winner: Side Hustle Track

Why RestoCopilot AI Qualifies: RestoCopilot AI is built from day one as a turn-key B2B SaaS side hustle for the massive independent restaurant market ($49–$99/month recurring). It solves the exact operational pain points that cost restaurants thousands of dollars monthly: ingredient waste, kitchen communication bottlenecks, and public Google Maps review damage. With zero marginal token cost in offline edge mode, the SaaS operates with a 90%+ gross software margin!

Technology Used: Open-Weights
Gemma-4-31B-IT
hosted via vLLM on AMD Instinct ROCm infrastructure.

How It Is Used:

While routine ticket deduplication runs on local edge Llama, Gemma-4-31B-IT acts as the high-intelligence culinary master in our Dual-Engine setup.

When complex dining disputes occur or when a chef wants to create a high-margin daily special from expiring inventory, Gemma evaluates multi-ingredient sensory chemistry, nutritional pairings, and profit margin impact to synthesize recipes like our "Tawa Malai Paneer & Wild Mushroom Sourdough Melt".

Gemma's deep reasoning crafts highly empathetic, personalized private apology messages that de-escalate upset diners before they ever vent publicly on social media.

Implementation in Code:
voice_announcer.py

How It Is Used:

In a noisy, greasy commercial kitchen, paper kitchen printer tickets tear and touchscreens get smudged with oil and flour.

RestoCopilot AI uses ElevenLabs to power a hands-free Voice-Activated Kitchen Display System (KDS). The moment a waiter fires an order ticket at the front of house, ElevenLabs synthesizes a crisp, authoritative audio dispatch directly through the kitchen loudspeaker:
> "Attention Kitchen! New order for Table 4. Prepare: 2x Butter Naan, 1x Paneer Butter Masala."

Zero-Latency Resilience: Includes local hash caching and seamless offline fallback to
gTTS
so kitchen announcements never fail even if internet connectivity flickers during dinner rush.

How It Is Used:

Online reputation dictates restaurant footfall; 94% of diners choose restaurants based on Google Maps reviews.

RestoCopilot AI uses SerpApi's Google Maps engine to ingest live diner reviews in real-time by restaurant name, place ID, or location coordinates.

Our AI parses star ratings, extracts key customer sentiment, flags kitchen issues (e.g., "naan arrived cold after 35 minutes"), and generates ready-to-post public owner responses while logging internal recovery alerts into the SQLite reputation vault.

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass

  🌲 What I Built

Most nature apps do the exact opposite of getting you outside: they trap you looking down at glowing smartphone glass, demanding constant 5G connectivity, and drowning you in social feeds, badges, and notification clutter.

When you hike into a mountain canyon, national park, or dense forest trail, cell reception drops to zero. The second you hear an unfamiliar bird vocalization or rustle in the trees, cloud-dependent apps fail completely with "No Internet Connection".

I built TrailWhisper—a dual-engine, mobile-ready wilderness bioacoustic scout designed with one core philosophy:

Make the screen the shortest part of the experience so you can put your phone away, listen to the canopy, and touch grass.

flowchart TD
A["🌲 Wild Trail Sound / Phone Mic / YouTube Audio"] --> B["Dual-Engine Bioacoustic Ingestion"]
    B --> C{"Internet Available?"}
C -- "Yes (Connected)" --> D["✨ Google Gemini Flash Multimodal Audio AI<br/>(Recognizes any bird, pigeon, owl, animal, rain, voice)"]
C -- "No (Deep Wilderness)" --> E["🌲 Offline Bioacoustic Spectral Matcher<br/>(STFT Spectrograms, Flatness, Harmonics, Cadence)"]
D --> F["Field Naturalist Guidance Engine<br/>('Where to look in the real canopy with your eyes')"]
    E --> F
    F --> G["🎧 Bluetooth Earbud Voice Dispatcher<br/>(Web Speech API & Offline Synthesis)"]
F --> H["🌿 'Touch Grass' Auto-Blank Mode<br/>(Screen goes black to put phone in pocket)"]

  ⚡ Key Features

Dual-Engine Multimodal Audio Intelligence:

Frontier Engine (Google Gemini Multimodal Audio): Ingests raw audio directly to recognize arbitrary avian species (Mourning Doves, Pigeons, Owls, Hawks, Chickadees, Cardinals, Robins, Sparrows, Crows), wildlife calls, human speech, and weather ambience in real time.

Offline Edge Engine (Bioacoustic Spectral Matcher): When you are 10 miles deep in the wilderness with zero bars of reception, local Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) algorithms, Wiener spectral flatness, zero-crossing rates, and pulse-cadence detectors identify species 100% locally with zero cloud dependencies.

"Where to Look in the Canopy" (Physical Field Guidance):

Instead of reciting Wikipedia trivia, TrailWhisper acts as an experienced field naturalist whispering in your ear:

"Look 15 feet up on slender dead birch twigs."

"Watch for a vivid red burst in the low blackberry brambles."

"Scan the tree trunk silhouette against the twilight sky."

Bluetooth Earbuds Voice Dispatcher:

Uses the browser's native Web Speech API on mobile devices and local synthesis on desktop. You never need to look at your phone—the app announces the bird and where to look directly into your earbuds.

"Touch Grass" Screen-Blanking Mode:

A dedicated 1-touch blank screen mode that dims the display into a minimalist Zen leaf, reminding hikers to slip the phone back into their pocket and look up at the trees.

100% Free Cloud Deployment on Render ($0/month):

Built to run on Render's free tier with native SSL (
https://
), ensuring smartphone browsers (Safari & Chrome) automatically grant microphone access in the field while conserving 100% of cloud credits for future hackathons.

Built for Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge: Touch Grass (October 2026)
Get off your screen and out into the wild. Dual-engine multimodal audio intelligence + offline bioacoustics, zero cell reception required, Bluetooth earbud voice guidance, and an automatic screen-blanker.

🌲 The "Touch Grass" Problem

When people hike into nature, they often hear fascinating bird vocalizations or wildlife rustles in the canopy. But when they pull out their phones:

Zero Cell Reception: Deep in canyons, mountain passes, and national forest trails, there is no 5G. Proprietary AI apps and ChatGPT fail with "No Internet Connection".

Screen Traps & Notification Pollution: Commercial apps trap users staring at glowing glass, doomscrolling social notifications instead of looking at nature.

Expensive Cloud Subscriptions: Proprietary apps lock audio databases behind monthly paywalls.

TrailWhisper solves this by making the screen the shortest part of the experience.

⚡ How TrailWhisper Works

[ Trail

…

  🛠️ How I Built It

TrailWhisper combines lightweight edge signal processing with frontier multimodal audio understanding:

Component

Technology

Purpose

Multimodal Audio AI

Google Gemini Flash

Deep zero-shot acoustic recognition across all wildlife, animals, birds, and trail dialogue

Edge Bioacoustics

scipy.signal
&
numpy

Computes 2D STFT spectrograms, Wiener spectral flatness, spectral centroids, and pulse cadence

Audio Ingestion

soundfile
&
pydub

Multi-format audio decoding (WAV, MP3, M4A, OGG, FLAC) from phone mics or file uploads

Naturalist Intelligence

Open Field Ecology KB

Enriches acoustic IDs with physical canopy coordinates and autumn foraging behaviors

Earbud Dispatcher

Web Speech API & PowerShell

Hands-free audio guidance played directly through Bluetooth headphones

Mobile Web Interface

Streamlit & Plotly

Mobile-responsive touch UI with interactive 2D spectrogram heatmap and "Touch Grass" blanking mode

  🌍 Why Open Innovation Matters

This challenge highlighted why open innovation and local-first computing are essential for outdoor technology:

  1. Zero Connectivity in Real Wilderness

The most beautiful places on Earth have zero cell signal. Proprietary, cloud-only AI models brick the second you step off the highway. An open-source, local-first architecture ensures your tool works equally well on an offline mountain summit as it does in a suburban backyard.

  2. Privacy & Environmental Respect

Commercial nature apps track GPS waypoints and harvest outdoor location habits. TrailWhisper processes raw audio purely in memory; your recordings and trail locations never leave your device without your explicit consent.

  3. Fighting "Screen Traps"

Closed commercial platforms are engineered for maximum screen time (ad views, feeds, infinite scrolls). Open-source software gave us the freedom to design an anti-engagement app: software that turns itself off so humans can reconnect with nature.

🥾 Testing It Outside: The Field Walk

For the "Touch Grass" field test, I took TrailWhisper outside on an early evening nature walk through a local park trail bordering deciduous woods.

I paired my phone to my Bluetooth earbuds, opened TrailWhisper over HTTPS, tapped Record, and slipped my phone into my jacket pocket.

Around 10 minutes along the trail, two sounds echoed through the canopy:

The Trail Voice Test: A fellow hiker passed by talking on their phone. TrailWhisper's formants filter identified Human Voice / Trail Dialogue (Homo sapiens) and gently whispered: "Human speech detected on trail. Put down your phone, look up at the canopy, and enjoy nature."

The Canopy Call: Near an overgrown briar patch, a sharp metallic whistle pierced the quiet. TrailWhisper analyzed the rising $4,200\text{ Hz}$ frequency sweeps and whispered:
> "Identified: Northern Cardinal. Look in dense tangled understory or low dogwood shrubs 3 to 8 feet off the ground. Foraging on fallen autumn seeds. Screen is asleep. Put your phone away and look for a brilliant burst of red."

I didn't take my phone out. I simply looked into the brambles—and within three seconds, spotted the flash of crimson plumage hopping through the fallen autumn leaves.

That moment was the whole point of this challenge: technology that steps out of the way so our eyes can look at the world.

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge: Build for a Friend

  What I Built

Most AI assistants live inside fragile browser tabs. They can chat, but they cannot touch hardware, they break the second an API rate limit hits, and they leak personal notes to cloud servers.
I built ALEX for my best friend—an elite science student and builder who was drowning under 50+ open tabs, constant context switching, and fragile AI tools.
ALEX is a sovereign, cyberpunk-themed Autonomous Terminal Operator.
Running directly inside the Windows command line, ALEX acts as a zero-latency executive co-pilot:

⚡ Zero-Downtime Dual-Engine: Primary Google Gemini / Gemma neural inference with automatic, seamless failover to Groq LPU (Qwen 27B open-weights) if rate limits or quota errors strike.

🔐 Zero-Knowledge Cloud Memory: Automatically syncs study logs, tasks, and diary entries to MongoDB Atlas, secured by client-side AES-256 Fernet encryption before transmission.

📄 Autonomous Study Vault: Decompiles noisy web URLs or raw notes, extracts high-yield flashcards, and synthesizes styled PDFs right onto the desktop using
fpdf2
.

🛰️ Live Real-World Intel: Deep SerpApi integration for instant flight fares, hotel matrices, YouTube video research, and breaking news.

⚙️ Direct Host Control: Fires hardware audio beeps, native WinForms alert modals, battery-saver schemas, and system lockouts.

  Demo

I built **ALEX** for my best friend—an intense computer science student and builder who was drowning under 50+ open tabs, constant context switching, and fragile AI tools.

ALEX: The Autonomous Cyberpunk Sovereign AI Operator Built for My Best Friend

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge: Build for a Friend

⚡ What I Built: The Death of Generic Chatbots

While most entries in this hackathon built polite, browser-bound wrapper chatbots that wait for users to click buttons, I built ALEX—a ruthless, military-grade Autonomous Terminal Operator engineered specifically for my best friend.

My friend is an elite science student and builder who constantly suffocated under:

Context Fragmentation: Drowning in 50+ browser tabs just to cross-reference technical research, flights, and lecture notes.

Surveillance Capitalism & Data Leaks: Modern productivity apps harvest user schedules and intellectual property for cloud model training.

Fragile Single-Model AI: Commercial bots crumble the second API rate limits, 429 quota exhaustion, or server outages occur.

Zero Host Execution: Typical AI assistants live in sandboxes—they can talk, but they can't…

View on GitHub

  How I Built It

ALEX is built with a lightweight, high-performance Python architecture designed for extreme reliability:

Layer

Technology

Purpose

Primary Brain

Google Gemini & Gemma Models

Ultra-fast multimodal reasoning and ReAct tool generation

Failover Brain

Groq LPU + Qwen 3.8 27B

High-throughput open-weight fallback that makes quota death impossible

Encrypted Storage

MongoDB Atlas + Fernet AES-256

Client-side encrypted cloud persistence with zero vendor data exposure

Real-Time Data Engine

SerpApi

Live Google Flights, Google Hotels, News, and YouTube intelligence

Document Engine

FPDF2 + Trafilatura

Web article decompiler and automated PDF study vault generator

  Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Closed AI ecosystems trap developers in sandboxes: you get a web chat box, strict rate limits, and zero control over your hardware or private data.
Open innovation changed everything for this project:

Uncapped Reliability: When proprietary API quotas run dry, open-weight models (like Gemma and Qwen on Groq) keep critical workflows alive with zero downtime.

True Cryptographic Privacy: By pairing open Python cryptography (
cryptography.fernet
) with distributed cloud databases (
pymongo
), my friend gets multi-device sync without any third party being able to read his notes.

  3. Unrestricted OS Integration: Open software gives us permission to control the host system—power management, audio, and local file vaults.

  Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

  1. Keeps Data Off Servers They Don't Control

Commercial AI platforms harvest your personal schedules, thoughts, and research to train centralized models. With open cryptography (
cryptography.fernet
), ALEX performs Client-Side AES-256 Field Encryption. Even when synced to MongoDB Atlas, the cloud only receives unreadable ciphertext. When offline or without internet, ALEX seamlessly falls back to a local SQLite database—the private encryption key never leaves my friend's laptop.

  2. Hot-Swapping Models with Zero Downtime & $0 Cost

Closed APIs trap you behind $20/month paywalls and strict 429 quota rate limits. Open innovation allowed us to build an autonomous router: when Gemini hits rate limits, ALEX instantly hot-swaps to open-weight models (Qwen 3.8 27B / Gemma) running on high-throughput Groq LPUs. It costs $0 to run, has zero vendor lock-in, and never drops a prompt.

  3. Hardware & OS Control vs Browser Sandboxes

Closed chatbots are trapped in browser tabs—they cannot touch your hardware. With open-source Python libraries (
psutil
,
fpdf2
,
winsound
), ALEX can alter Windows battery-saver power profiles, trigger native OS alert dialogs, sound hardware alarms, and compile styled dark-mode study PDFs directly to the desktop.

The Handover: What My Friend Said 🤝

When I handed the terminal over to my best friend, he tested it immediately:

"ALEX, summarize this 15-page research paper, compile 5 active-recall flashcards directly into a styled PDF, and set a hardware alarm for 45 minutes."

Within 1.8 seconds, the terminal deconstructed the paper, synthesized a dark-slate study PDF right onto his Windows desktop, armed the hardware timer, and pushed encrypted logs to MongoDB Atlas.

His immediate reaction:

"Bro, this is actually insane. I just closed 30 cluttered browser tabs, cancelled my paid AI subscription, and my research notes aren't sitting unencrypted on corporate cloud servers. Having this live inside my terminal feels like having a personal cyberpunk JARVIS."
