Hello everyone!

It’s been quite a while since I last dug into the complexities and wonders of blockchain technology together—nearly a year and a half, in fact. The blockchain technology has been rapidly evolving during this period of time. Returning to this fascinating world, I'm here to bring you fresh insights and explain the trends shaping the blockchain today.

One of the most significant advancements is the push towards interoperability among blockchain networks. This concept is not just technical jargon but a critical evolution that could redefine how blockchain technologies communicate and operate with one another. Whether you're a seasoned crypto enthusiast or new to the space, understanding this can dramatically enhance how you view and interact with these technologies.

 🧪 Why It Matters

 Breaking Down Blockchain Silos

Traditionally, blockchain networks operated in isolation. Each blockchain—be it Ethereum, Bitcoin, Tezos, or others—had its unique ecosystem, rules, and applications. This segregation created numerous challenges, especially for users who needed to interact across these platforms. For instance, how would you transfer information or value from one blockchain to another without losing the inherent benefits of decentralization and security?

This is where the concept of interoperability comes into play. It's about making these independent blockchains communicate seamlessly and efficiently, without intermediaries.

 🔍 The Problem

 The Isolation of Blockchain Ecosystems

Blockchain technology promised a decentralized world, but the isolated nature of early blockchain networks posed significant barriers. This lack of interoperability limited the technology's potential for widespread adoption and integration into diverse applications.

 💡 The Solution(s):

 Bridging the Gaps

Enter the solutions like Cosmos and Polkadot, platforms designed from the ground up to enable blockchains to interact. These platforms use various protocols to ensure that blockchains can share information and transactions smoothly, thereby broadening their applicability and effectiveness.

 Key Technologies and Frameworks:

Cosmos: Utilizes a technology called IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication) which allows data to be transferred between any two blockchains that support the protocol.

Polkadot: Employs a parachain model where various blockchains operate in parallel within one larger ecosystem, connected via the Polkadot Relay Chain. (we wrote some basic educational info about Polkadot too)

Read the full article here!

Also, I'm interested in what other topics you are interested and what should we cover in the next The Crypto Journal sessions.

Hello and welcome back to The Crypto Journal.

No fear of missing out. Improve your crypto knowledge in 5 minutes with #TheCryptoJournal

This report will be an easy one as I will focus on the introduction to Smart Contracts.

Full article here.

 📓 What's inside

What is a smart contract?

Why do smart contracts matter?

How do they work?

Real-life use cases.

What do you use to write smart contracts?

How can you start learning to develop on the Blockchain?

Tutorials, guides, courses, free resources

 ⚡️ What is it

Probably you've heard of smart contracts if you are a curious person like me and if you spent (too much) time researching the Blockchain and crypto environment. It's not new technology, but Blockchain has seriously extended the usage of smart contracts.

Smart contracts are collections of code that run on the Blockchain.

The code is decentralized (stored across all nodes in the network)

The code is immutable (can't be altered once committed to the Blockchain)

The code is open (anyone can view it and handle it).

Smart contracts cannot be deleted by default, and their interactions are irreversible.

 🧪 Why it matters

Smart contracts allow cryptocurrencies to offer much more than a function as a digital currency that can transfer assets from A to B.

They allow multiple players to come to a shared outcome accurately, timely, and unattended.

You won't need to use any intermediary services to streamline a transaction.

Exclude human participation in transactions using smart contracts as the defined program code does everything.

Smart contracts provide safety as the data in the decentralized registry cannot be lost.

To sum it up: Trust, Autonomy, Safety, Backup, Speed, and Accuracy.

 🩺 How does it work?

I'll try to explain this for non-programmers, but one of the most used mechanisms in computer code is "if x happens, then do y."

The most basic smart contract can use this statement as a transaction type.

The vending machine is one of the earliest and most specific models used to explain smart contracts (written down by Nick Szabo way before the invention of Bitcoin).

If you insert the right amount of money and choose, the vending machine gives you the selected item. The contract terms are clear, and the transaction executes independently (and no third party included).

If you bundle multiple smart contracts together, you can cultivate a complex set of functionalities that serve as the core of dApps (Decentralized Apps).

 ⚖️ Use-cases

🏦 Financial - DeFi dApps designate a challenging choice to the traditional financial market. Thanks to the trustless, immutable, and transparent aspects of Blockchain, smart contracts can be used for lending, borrowing, trading, automatic payments, financial data recording, and oh so many more.

🐾 Digital Identity - Providing unique identity processes in digital assets removes counterfeits and makes KYC easy-flowing.

👨🏼‍⚖️ Government - A blockchain-based digital government can guard data, streamline operations, and diminish fraud, waste, and abuse while simultaneously improving trust and responsibility.

🚚 Supply Chain Management - Automates supply chain with visibility and transparency leads to fewer frauds

💰 Crowdfunding - Aiming to solve three main issues – ease up KYC verification, eliminate dependency on third-parties such as banks, and speed up pay-in and pay-out transactions.

🏥 Healthcare - Helping cross-institutional visibility, automating data share, and improving privacy.

👩‍💼 Insurance - Automating claims and settles disputes with proof.

 ⚔️ Players

Writing smart contracts it's not easy if you are not a developer. Various blockchains can use multiple programming languages, but here are some of the popular ones:

Solidity - an object-oriented and statically-typed programming language for writing smart contracts on Ethereum and EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) compatible blockchains.

Rust - a low-level statically-typed programming language that is fast and memory-efficient (used in Solana, Terra). It is type-safe, memory safe, and free of undefined behaviors.

Haskell - Functional programming at its best - used for writing on Cardano.

Ink! - an eDSL to write smart contracts in Rust for blockchains built on the Substrate framework. Mainly Polkadot.

AssemblyScript - Can be used for smart contracts on NEAR.

Michelson - For building on Tezos.

Vyper - a contract-oriented programming language that targets the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) based on the principles of Python.

Cadence - Used for creating contracts on the FLOW Blockchain.

 🔨 No-code Smart Contracts

Fuse.io - Create your own custom branded wallet and

currency in a few simple steps.

MyWish - Create your smart contract without coding.

GraphLinq - Automate & perform actions based on events triggered on-chain & off-chain with no-code.

Bunzz - Ready-made contracts combination. Create dApps without code.

CreatorChain - Blockchain-as-a-Service.

 📝 Writing Smart Contracts (Free resources)

Even if you do not intend to write your own smart contract, it's worth learning the basics of how they operate on Blockchain.

Hello. I'm Tudor, blockchain developer and writer at The Crypto Journal

I help people understand Blockchain & Crypto concepts with the help of 5-minute worth-of-reading reports.

If you are intrested, you can subscribe here.

Today we are going to do a short report about … Tokenomics.
To read the full report, go here: The Science of Tokenomics

 ⚡️ What it is?

Tokenomics is the analysis of the economics of crypto tokens or cryptocurrencies. It refers to all of a crypto token's characteristics that make it desirable to investors.

 🧪 Why it matters?

You heard this lots of times: Before you invest in a cryptocurrency project, it's advised to make an analysis/research it so you can manage the risk of the investment.

It is essential to examine why a token (a crypto asset issued on top of a Blockchain) has value and why it's reached its price. By looking at different aspects which describe the world of cryptocurrencies, tokenomics provides an answer to the economizing issues of tokens and their functionality in Blockchain environment.

 🔍 Problem

Lately, we could notice tens of thousands of new tokens arrived on the 'market'. A token will be successful and appreciated over time only if it has good tokenomics. Developing proper tokenomics is crucial to creating a token that reflects the growth in value and protocol utilization. The most important thing is to understand how the token will be used.

Token functions.

 product / service use;

access to the product / service;

value exchange

voting / governance / ownership;

property rights;

control;

reward;

discount;

payment unit;

profit distribution;

security

 💡 Solution

 Understanding tokenomics before starting investing or developing your own token.

 🩺 Core Elements

 ⚡️ Distribution and Allocation

 Pre mining vs. Fair-launch: In pre-mined token launch (ICO), investors, developers, and select individuals and organizations are granted tokens before the public offering. A fair launch is when a cryptocurrency is mined, earned, owned, and controlled by the whole community.

 ⚡️ Token Supply

 Circulating supply & maximum available: The circulating supply of a token is the number of tokens that have been published so far and are currently in circulation. The max supply of a token is the maximum number of tokens that can ever be generated (mined or minted).

 ⚡️ Market Cap(italization)

The Market cap is an essential factor to think about before you invest. It's calculated by multiplying the number of tokens in circulation (supply) by the current market price of a single token.

A lower market cap might suggest that the cryptocurrency has more potential to grow, and large-cap tokens might be a securer investment. At the same time, their growth possibility leans to be smaller (more about market capitalization: here).

 ⚡️ Inflationary vs. Deflationary

I know, big words, but it's not that complicated.

An inflationary token doesn't have a maximum supply and will continue to be produced over time. In a deflationary token standard, the max supply of the token is locked. (If many tokens were in supply, there would be an excess. And whenever there's an excess, a price decrease follows).

 ⚡️ Consensus

 We will cover the different aspects of a Consensus Mechanism, which one they are, and the advantages/disadvantages in a future report. Short one: there are 2 important ones Proof-of-Work (e.g., Bitcoin) and Proof-of-Stake (e.g., Polkadot).

 ⚡️ Rewards / Staking / Earnings

Another essential aspect of a project is sharing the benefits and helping the network.

Often, token projects give rewards to users and investors for contributing to the network. Incentivize the miners (proof-of-work model), secure the network (proof-of-stake), or just confront the inflation are some reasons to do it.

How to earn rewards? Mining, Staking, or even running Masternodes.

 ⚡️ Utility

Of course, don't you ever forget about the utility of a token!

Does the token make sense in Blockchain? They can be used for payment inside or outside the protocol environment or, they can be used in staking and participating in governance. Or maybe, just holding a token gives you access to an app.

Hello. I'm Tudor, blockchain developer and writer at The Crypto Journal

I help people understand Blockchain & Crypto concepts with the help of 5-minute worth-of-reading reports.

If you are intrested, you can subscribe here.

This time, I give you Polkadot.

 ⚡️ What is it?

Polkadot is a project with a different kind of purpose: connecting the blockchains. Instantaneous and scalable.

 🧪 Why it matters?

The vision is to build what is called a "multi-chain" protocol.

The objective is a "Decentralized Web - Decentralized Network."

 🔍 Problem

Today, cryptocurrencies are scattered across many various networks and protocols. If you have funds in Bitcoin and want to buy some Ethereum, you'll need to withdraw your Bitcoins from one exchange into another, then transmit them over as Ether from one wallet to another.

Anyone who has participated in DeFi in numerous chains or bought NFTs can recognize how necessary it is for assets to cross-chain.

Polkadot concentrates on solving two significant problems of Blockchain: Interoperability and Scalability.

 💡 Solution

Polkadot has focused on becoming a fully scalable, heterogeneous web concentrated on creating a multi-chain technology.

Web3 Foundation (the Swiss association that operates the network) has defined Polkadot as a "next-generation blockchain."

More significantly, as a public chain, Polkadot has concluded the assignment that Ethereum has not satisfied (yet) – sharding.

 🩺 Core Elements

Long story short, the Polkadot network has a primary blockchain named relay chain and many user-created parallel chains called parachains.

🌙 Polkadot uses nPoS (Nominated Proof of Stake) as a consensus mechanism.
