Percona Operator for PostgreSQL V2.3

Are you already using PostgreSQL as your database and considering making the leap into the world of Kubernetes? It's a move that numerous companies have been making lately, and the statistics on Kubernetes usage reflect the growing trend. However, when it comes to running a database within Kubernetes, there is a complexity that is not immediately evident.
That's where Kubernetes Operators come into play, offering a simplified way to manage and deploy PostgreSQL database clusters in Kubernetes environments.

Percona is a company that offers open source Kubernetes Operators for databases. Today Percona has exciting news for the open source community, especially for those who use databases! Percona Operator for PostgreSQL version 2.3 is now available!🙌

This last version of Percona Operator for PostgreSQL, comes with significant enhancements and new features. Let´s review some of them them:

Custom PostgreSQL extensions have expanded the range of available built-in extensions, like the notable PostGIS, offering geospatial data storage in PostgreSQL while being disabled by default, but can be easily turned on by those who need it.

The ‘loadBalancerSourceRanges’ Custom Resource option was added, allowing users to customize the range of IP addresses that can access the load balancer.

In line with the commitment to versatility and enterprise needs, the Operator has been made compatible with the OpenShift platform, enabling seamless deployments both on-premise and in the cloud.

Additionally, the Operator to support the latest Percona Distribution for PostgreSQL version 16 was updated and is now used as the default database version.

Are you curious about how operators can help you at this point, or do you have questions? 😃

Leave me your comments. Happy to answer them!

Review the official documentation of the Percona Operator for PostgreSQL documentation.

My Day at Barcamp London: An Unconference Adventure

Last Saturday, November 11, I attended the BarCamp 2023 event, which was recommended to me by my manager, Joe, after I moved to London 🤩.

This year, the event took place at the London Academy of Excellence, Lilywhite House, which is a 48-minute train ride from the center of London.

The format of Barcamp is different from other events I've attended. Barcamp is a free, one-day unconference for designers, developers, and geeks of all types 🤓.

An unconference is a type of conference or meeting where organizers do not predetermine the agenda and topics but are instead determined by the participants at the beginning of the event. It is a participant-driven, collaborative, and open format for gatherings, often used in tech and creative communities. 👾

The reception was very warm, and everything was well-organized: the venues, the talks, the reception area, the activities, and the coffee break areas. I really enjoyed being there!

Let's see how BarCamp works. Everything works around the following board, which has the classrooms where the talks will be held as rows and the hours with a 40-minutes intervals as columns.

So, the person interested in presenting their topic writes it on paper and places it in the available classrooms at the desired time. Then, everyone who approaches the board knows which talk is taking place in each classroom. Interesting, isn't it? I liked it!

Fulfilling the event's objective, I added my card: "Docker 101: Intro to Docker Containers"

I attended some talks after lunch. There were a variety of plates and desserts, which were plentiful and delicious.

I attended Dan Pope's talk: "Making an Online Game Show Buzzer" and "My Adventures Doing VR Stand-Up Comedy" by Lowie Christie. The presentations were very informative and fun! We were part of live games and stories at Stand Up Comedy with VR.

Then came the time for my talk. Woohoo! I spoke about containers and did a demo with volumes and databases. I felt different while presenting this time; I was less nervous and less anxious! It was great! 🥳

We wrapped up BarCamp with a Talent Show competition. Everyone put their creativity and talent to the test by developing inventions derived from a single empty box. It was a lot of fun! It's how we closed the event with a lot of energy and laughter. 🫶 🙌

Take advantage of BarCamp next year! It was a lot of fun!

You can follow BarCamp on Mastodon, and Twitter, and if you want to learn more, visit the BarCamp website. See you at BarCamp 2024!

See you in my next blog post! 👩‍🌾

I learned English very late in my professional career. I enjoyed the process, and #Kubecon became the trigger for my learning! 🚀🎢🍒

In 2018 it was the first time that I traveled to another country. I decided to attend KubeCon Seattle 🎡. I was very excited! Wow... first time in another country! I thought my poor English was enough to "survive", but when I landed in the United States, it was totally different 😅.

On the first day in Kubecon, I had problems registering; I couldn't understand what they were saying. Of course, it was embarrassing for me, and I had to deal with similar situations during the week; everything was too much for my head, a whole language that I did not know 😃.

I am not ashamed to say that I did not understand most of the talks, but I decided to try, make it different, and get something out of it:

🐾 I started saying "Hello" to everyone to try to introduce myself at least.
🐾 In all the talks, I sat in the first chairs, very close to the speaker, to see and read their lips and understand at least the main idea of the talk.
🐾 I stayed until the end of the talks to see the section of questions where I could listen to them closely.
🐾 I am not forgetting my notebook, where I used to ask someone to write down what I was not really understanding, and I could see the fruit on the face of the person I was talking to, and my frustration was greater because I couldn't communicate.

I don't regret having done it. Despite this, I made wonderful friends who understood my situation; that's how I met Rajakavitha Kodhandapani, my friend, the friend who made me feel comfortable in an event as huge as Kubecon, my best friend at Kubecon Seattle. She also told me about the KubeCon Scholarships 🍬🍧 (But this is another blog post)
Thanks, Rajie, for sharing it! 🙌

I returned to my country thinking about everything that I had missed by not knowing the language, and that was when I decided to prioritize my learning in English, I started to take action and invest in my education. 🔧🚲

In 2021, I received 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘅 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 to attend Kubecon Los Angeles in person 🎁 🎊🎈🙌 Wow, first in-person event in months! : ').

This time was different 🙏, I attended without having much difficulty with the language and making more friends, the first time asking questions in public speaking, the first time speaking in front of cameras in cloudnative.tv ( Thanks to Bill Mulligan for your support and Chris Short for making the interview easy for me ) 🌱.

This time was my first time in Kubecon Europe, Amsterdam and I attended as a CNCF Ambassador and as member if Percona booth. How happy this makes me, surrounding myself with people from the community.

Each #KubeCon is truly a challenge for me, proof of how much I am improving each year and how, and how immensely happy I am to see so many friends and make new ones along the way.

The Linux Foundation and CNCF [Cloud Native Computing Foundation] are organizations that gave me opportunities to grow professionally. They were part of my adventure to learn a new language. Thank you! 😊🌼 🌸

🎀🔔 What I learned: Never too late or too early to start something; there will always be people around you supporting you and trusting you (sisters and brothers you will make in your journey). Do the best you can! And then share it because it can also be the best chance in someone else's life like it was for me!

Follow the Linux Foundation and CNCF also consider following Dan Brown from Linux Foundation and Bill Mulligan from CNCF
they are always sharing awesome resources and opportunities.

✨👵This post is dedicated to my grandmother, who learned to paint and write her name at the age of 93, and she died one month after I traveled to Kubecon in 2021 and Dan Kohn who was the executive director at Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), thanks for the opportunity Dan :')

Last month, I attended AWS Summit in Mexico and Colombia thanks to Percona, who sponsored my trips. This blog is oriented to share tips that will encourage you to participate in a similar tech event, and if it is not your first time, this article will help you to better prepare for your next adventure in a similar summit.

Remember, these tips are optional. Feel free to take the one you feel comfortable with it.

I have categorized it into three parts: before, during, and after the event.

 Before the conference

I will start with what we should do before an event; things I learned that are essential

Prepare an agenda

Many of the tech conferences I have participated, they have apps you can download before the event. All the details about the sessions are available there, like category, topic, speaker, and session level.
Take some time to select the talks you will attend during the conference so you arrive on time and avoid conflicts in your agenda.
AWS has an app you can easily download from the App Store and track all your sessions.

Let your connections know you will be at the event

Let your network on social media know that you will be at the event and will be available to chat with them. It could be an excellent opportunity to start a business, offer or find job opportunities, or have someone to hang out with during the event.

Have a virtual card ready for you

There will be plenty of time for networking. You will want to share information about yourself or keep in touch with the people you know. Here are some ideas:

Use the LinkedIn QR code to share it, so people can quickly add you to LinkedIn.

If you prefer to avoid printing physical cards and distributing them. You can print the LinkedIn QR code once and paste it on your conference badge.

If you are going to represent your company, you can bring swag or stickers to share with the attendees.

 During the conference

Arrive on time!

Arriving soon is also a good habit, even at tech conferences. You will have plenty of time to collect your credential card without queuing. Also, you can take time to identify the places of the talks, network with the attendees, and even enjoy a delicious breakfast offered by the organizers.

The heart of the conference
AWS Summit is for people who have run workloads on AWS. But it is not limited to that! It is an excellent opportunity for people who want to start in the world of the cloud with AWS.'

The AWS Summit was categorized as follows:

Parallel sessions

It was one of my favorites. They displayed multiple stages with different themes in a single environment. If you are one of the people affected by the environment's noise while you are in a conference, the headphones they put at your disposal will suffice to isolate other sounds that are not from the current chat.

Dev Lounge

AWS Dev Lounge series, where developer specialists and subject matter experts; will answer your questions about the entire AWS ecosystem. Make sure you don't leave the conference with doubts, ask them as much as you can.

Training and Certification in AWS

AWS has space for training and certifications where you'll find all the ways to get started with AWS and improve your skills in the AWS cloud. You will find free courses and training discounts. Talk with the people at that booth who will explain how to get these benefits.

Liga AWS DeepRacer

AWS DeepRacer League is an ML competition for developers worldwide; if interested, register here.

Exhibition

It is a space where many cutting-edge products and solutions for AWS partners show you how they can help your business. It is an excellent opportunity to learn from them.

Networking

Enjoy meeting colleagues and interchange ideas with them. One of my favorite things in an event is talking with people and knowing their experiences.

Sessions have a bit of everything. Beginning the keynote speeches, they highlight how many companies worldwide are using AWS to transform their businesses and have competitive advantages. Also, AWS global infrastructure networks, security, identity and compliance, startups, artificial intelligence, machine learning, containers, servers, and many more categories.

If you want to know more about the technical sessions at the last AWS Summit in Mexico and Colombia, visit Mario Garcia's post
and check the link to the recorded talks.

Take notes/photos
Taking notes day by day will help you remember the key points of the talk.

Bring a small notebook to take quick notes, or take pictures of essential parts of the presentation that you can share later with your team.

 After the conference

Writing a post about the topics you attended will help you to remember and bring back again the things you learned.

If there is a specific topic you want to listen to again, you can access the recording of sessions.

You can also write an internal blog post to share your experiences with your team.

In conclusion, participating in local AWS events and technology conferences is a great opportunity to share knowledge and experiences and get updated on the beneficial Amazon cloud ecosystem. It is also a perfect opportunity to increase your network of contacts. Use this article to help make this journey more fruitful.

Thank you for reading! :)

The Monthly Percona Developer Meetup is an opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes view of different projects in Percona and directly interact with the experts to exchange ideas, ask questions, etc.

From now on, Monthly Percona Developer Meetups will take place monthly to have open discussions and in-person (online) communication. You can join our Developer Meetup via Restream, the Percona YouTube channel, and LinkedIn events.

The topic of the first Monthly Percona Developer Meetup was
Hacktoberfest.

What is Hacktoberfest? Hacktoberfest is an annual event hosted by DigitalOcean that encourages people to contribute to Open Source throughout October. It is inclusive, everyone can join to work on Open Source projects, and you can participate by choosing your favorite project.

You need two essential things to participate. First, register on the Hacktoberfest website anytime between September 26 and October 31, 2022. Second, look through the participating projects, choose your favorites, and consult the documentation guiding you to send your first contribution.

Forty thousand participants who complete Hacktoberfest and have at least four pull/merge requests accepted between October 1 and October 31 can have a tree planted in their name or the Hacktoberfest T-shirt. In that case, you can pick a tree planted in your name or the Hacktoberfest 2022 T-shirt.

Let's ask the Percona experts!

Which Percona projects joined Hacktoberfest?
All the Percona GitHub Projects with the label: “hacktoberfest” are ready to contribute.

How do I find issues?

On GitHub, the issues are tagged with the “good-first-issue” tag.

On Jira, tagged with “newbie”, “hacktoberfest” and “onboarding”

You can also pick any other issue you like or create new ones.

What types of contributions count?
You can contribute in several ways: coding, documentation, testing, design, discussions, Content Creator (Blog posts, videos), etc.; they all count.

How can you reach the Percona team?
The best way to do it is directly in the Percona projects, or you can join our community slack, Discord, or write us in our community forum.

Look at some of the Percona projects added to Hacktoberfest this year.

Starting for percona/percona-docker. Supported by Evgeniy Patlan, Manager, Build & Release Engineering. There are images for basic scenarios. The idea is to create more images and improve the existing ones or extend them to Docker Compose. Also, contributions to improve the Docker setup are welcome. You can find issues in Jira or GitHub, where you can also participate in discussions about Percona Docker images.

Our next project is Percona Monitoring and Management (PMM). This project is supported by Artem Gavrilov, Backend Software Engineer, and Nurlan Moldomurov, Full-Stack Engineer. PMM is a great project to contribute to during Hacktoberfest. There are minor and easy-to-do issues in Github; it is not necessary to register them in Jira. These contributions are welcome if you have any good ideas, want to improve something or simplify some process. Send your PR; the maintainers will review it as soon as possible. We also have advanced issues if you want to go for more advanced tasks.

For our third project, we have percona/mongodb_exporter. Carlos Salguero is the maintainer for this project. He says it is a project easy to get started, and there is not much-complicated logic behind this. It is about running some MongoDB internal commands to get statistics like diagnostic data or replica status, passing JSON to produce metrics from these commands. You use a complete Makefile to start sandbox instances to test almost everything; you don’t have a virtual machine or different MongoDB instances. The issues are in GitHub and Jira. The primary programming language is Go.

It's the turn of percona/percona-server-mongodb-operator; Denys Kondratenko is the maintainer of this project. It is an excellent opportunity to learn about Kubernetes and how to extend it and maintain stateful databases inside Kubernetes. Most of the things are tracked in GitHub and Jira.

Our next project is percona/pg_stat_monitor, a Query Performance Monitoring tool for PostgreSQL. The maintainer is Ibrar Ahmed, Sr. Software Engineer (PostgreSQL). The primary area to contribute is the releases. If there are contributions with ideas on improving the information provided for pg_stat_monitor, they are welcome. The issues are defined in Jira.

In summary, those are some of our projects that are in Hacktoberfest.
This month is Open Source month; it's Hacktoberfest month party! 💃🏻 🕺🏻

Remember that you can interact with the maintainers of each project through GitHub/Jira/Discord or our Community Forum.

If you haven't sent a PR, this is the time to do it. Write us at community-team@percona.com if you have any questions.

Happy Hacktoberfest with Percona! 💪🤗

It's been a month since I started working at Percona. This post is to share my experience this month.

I received a very warm welcome from my team David, Aleks, Fredel and Daniil. I had my first one-on-one with Matt Yonkovit, who walked me through the weekly and long-term plans, reiterating the opportunity to be creative, which was amazing!

Virtual Coffees ☕️🍪
I met with various Perconians experts at virtual coffees, where I had the opportunity to learn more about the culture and adventures in Percona. I spoke with wonderful Perconians like Marcos Albe, Sergey Pronin, Michael Villegas, Anastasia Alexandrova, Aimée Ng, Natalia Marukovich, Mario García, and Denys Kondratenko.

Tech 💻👩🏻
After completing my Onboarding process, I began reviewing Percona's technical documentation, open source projects, and installation processes. I loved playing with different technologies, like PMM, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS (EKS, CloudFormation), PostgreSQL, MySql, MongoDB, and more didn't explore yet.

In my second week, I focused on installing PMM using Docker, there are different ways to install PMM, and it was a lot of fun playing with all these technologies and making notes for content creation.
I also submitted my first PR to introduce myself to the Percona community and I published my first blog in Percona 🤩

Questions ❓🤔

One of the things I learned from one of my mentors was the importance of asking questions at work; it doesn't matter if these questions are silly if I need to understand something better or have a different perspective I will just ask.

Celebration 🎂🍭
We celebrate Los 16 años de Percona, so we will meet all Perconians where we celebrate it with a cake and a lovely meeting! I met Peter Zaitsev Co-founder and CEO of Percona.

WTT 💃
I am part if Women Transforming Technology - Mentorship Program in Percona.

In this program where we can connect, empower and inspire women in all areas and levels of the organization and provide a safe platform to make an impact in the open-source community and beyond. I will meet the amazing team next month 😊

Goodbyes 👏🏾🐠

We said goodbye to Matt Yonkovit, my manager, who accompanied Percona for a long time and who interviewed me for the first time in Percona. We'll meet up soon at some of the Open Source events, Matt!

It was a fascinating four weeks!
If you want to know more about Percona, do not hesitate to write me, happy to answer!

First time applying to over 150 jobs in less than two months

First time doing interviews in English

First time negotiating my SALARY

I would like to share that I got a job after almost two years with a gap, and I will share the process of what I did to get it, in case it can help others in the same situation as me.

I consider myself very optimistic, but I want to be transparent here. In my job search process I didn't always keep my mind positive, sometimes uncertainty arrives and does its thing, showing itself in the form of anguish and anxiety. And it sharpened my thoughts by remembering my weaknesses and forgetting my strengths.

Some of those thoughts crossed my mind at least once:

I have a gap, recruiters will ask about it.

I don't speak English very well and I'm not prepared to look for work abroad.

The technology was so fast in the last two years, and I am outdated.

People are getting fired from big companies and I'm trying to get a job now?

But as I got more interviews, those thoughts became, Okay, it's possible, you're doing it! In none of these interviews did anyone tell me that my English was bad and not many companies ask me about my gap. I learned that I must continue to focus on my strengths throughout the process and avoid overthinking.

What did I do to get a job that really met my expectations in terms of career growth and compensation? I describe it below and I am adding some tips I followed.

After having my resume updated, LinkedIn and GitHub profile ready, I started to apply on LinkedIn jobs search, I also kept an eye on the jobs posted on Twitter, Yes! Twitter is where I found my current job posted, so I applied. Some recruiters reached me because of GitHub profile. Have them ready! :)

I tried to keep my daily schedule with interviews, which kept me busy. Not having any on my schedule would have worried me.

I wrote (over email, LinkedIn, and Twitter) to hiring managers, recruiters, CTOs, CEOs, and people from my network about open positions in their companies.

I personalize the messages and made them more special. Making sure their names are spelled correctly.

I added extra effort to create content, recruiters reached me because I created a pair of Youtube videos in English. Sharing your knowledge will help others and open new doors to grow your network.

Get to know your interviewer, check their Linkedin profile before your interview, and add them to Linkedin, this will give you an idea of who you are speaking to, and send a thank you message after the interview.

Took some minutes to read about the company before the interview, and highlight important things about it, it shows interest and seriousness in your job search.

Be prepared for the first interview: It could be just a friendly conversation, some could ask you about your experience, or it could be a behavioral question, STAR questions, or technical interview, they vary for companies and countries where you are applying.

Even if the company rejected you, say thanks for the opportunity and keep that door open for future interviews, we don’t know when we could need it.

Have a register of all your applications: the date you are applying, status, name recruiter, job description, everything to help you be organized (use the tool you feel comfortable with, but keep track)

Consider changing the word rejected for redirected, it will be better! :)
Save 10% of your effort to study, the market is very competitive, there are new things to learn and they are necessary to get the job.

Prepare a set of questions about the company or the position. The recruiter will always ask you if you have questions at the end of the interview.

Don’t stop to apply until actually sign an offer letter

Keep in mind the ideal company for you, are you looking for a work/life balance, prestige, culture, benefits, and professional growth, remember these priorities always when applying for jobs.

Remember that there will always be a company that will pay more for you and give you greater benefits.

You will see posts about people getting the “dream” job, or people being fired, support them 😊, and remember that your main focus is to keep applying!
Apply! Apply! Apply!

Try to talk with somebody, it is not easy to assimilate lots of rejections, you need a buddy, friend or your family.

Don't forget to negotiate your salary, you don’t lose anything doing it.

Don’t wait for anything for nobody, generate your own opportunities, something can not leave as other people want for you, for that reason you have to have your own plans.

Motivate yourself each morning: I will find a job, I will get the email for the interview, I will pass this interview

Smile 😊, even if are having rejections, a smile will help you to keep strong. It is hard but you will get it! 💪

Last, don't lose hope! You will make it work!

After accepting the job offer, I jumped and run to hug my mom, the person who is with me in all my failures and my successes.

Mom, I got the job, Please don't worry about me anymore!

Outreachy ended and here is my experience in Apache Airflow Open Source

My Outreachy internship ended, It was fast and I learned a lot of things in this period. I've never programmed in Python like I did in Apache Airflow. My mentor Jarek Potiuk guide me write my first lines of code for Open Source, I am very grateful for his patience 🙌.
This is basically what encompasses my learning, on the technical skills side.

Apache Airflow is an open source workflow management platform for data engineering pipelines by creating workflows as directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) of tasks written in Python. It is considered one of the most robust platforms used by data engineers.

Apache Airflow has a very complete and complex local development environment written mainly in Bash, it's called Breeze. However, most project contributors are proficient in Python, so the local development environment is not good for maintenance and debugging.

🎯 Our goal Convert Airflow Local Development environment (Breeze) from Bash-based to Python-based and also make it possible for Windows users to run the Breeze environment.

My mentors detailed each task in the backlog using GitHub Projects. ShoutOut to my mentors: Jarek Potiuk, Elad Kalif, Nasser Kaze for giving me as much detail to get started.

Backlog of our tasks on GitHub

 Technical Skills

To start working on a feature, we create a separate branch
git checkout -b <new-branch>
. We always “rebase”, to place our changes at the end of the latest updates that were in the original repository.

git remote add apache git@github.com:apache/airflow.git
git fetch apache
git fetch --all
# This will print the HASH of the base commit which you
# should use to rebase your feature from
git merge-base my-branch apache/main
git rebase HASH --onto apache/main
git push --force-with-lease

One of the challenges for me was understanding how to resolve conflicts with Git, and rebasing was one of the techniques that worked quite well for me.

Through discussions, my mentor and I analyze the bash script code and we defined what is the best way to approach it. Before I can rewrite it in Python, there are things that can definitely be done differently because of the flexibility of Python.

Before pushing, we use pre-commits, to review the code before it goes to the main repository of the version control system

pre-commit install
pre-commit --version
pre-commit uninstall

After finishing the implementation, we can create a Pull Request, if it is not ready, we can set it as a DRAFT to indicate that it is Work in Progress and that it is not yet ready for review.

Once our Pull Request is created, test flows in GitHub Actions are executed, they validates many things, depending on the content that is modified. Example:

If the change is related to documentation, validation is quite simple and awaits the approval of our mentor.

If the core of Apache Airflow is changed, it runs all the necessary tests with different versions of Python.

This is an amazing flowchart that describes all the test cases workflow.

Mermaind flowchart created by Jarek Potiuk

Once all the Jobs finish successfully, our Pull Request is ready to be approved and merged.

During my contribution stage I have used different Python libraries, these are some of them:

PSutil
Library to retrieve information on running processes and system utilization (CPU, memory, disks, network, sensors) in Python.

Click
Click is a Python package for creating beautiful command line interfaces in a composable way with as little code as necessary.

Subprocess
module allows you to spawn new processes, connect to their input/output/error pipes, and obtain their return codes.

Data Class
Data classes are just regular classes that are geared towards storing state, rather than containing a lot of logic.

 Soft Skills

These were some of the Soft Skills I focused on, I'm still learning from this.

One of the great challenges for me was to "communicate" effectively orally and in writing. I have been able to perform well in writing, as I have taken the time to detail my thoughts and let my mentor know. Orally, the weekly meetings and the one-on-ones with my mentor were a great opportunity to practice. I am quite happy because it is my first professional experience in an English-Speaking Environment.

I have tried to summarize all my experience in one post, I have left many without mentioning, but I will do it little by little through other posts.

Some technical things I am exploring these days are Docker, Kubernetes, Helm Chart,GHCR.io in Apache Airflow environment.

I am still working in Open Source in Apache Airflow, to change the script which executes all the tests in GitHub actions, it is called Selective Check which is in Bash Script. My mentor and I wanted to make it easier in Python.

🌿 My lasts words:

Thanks Outreachy, and thanks to my mentors to gave me this opportunity in Apache Airflow. 🥲🙏😊🙋🙈

I hope that you have learned something from this, and if you have questions about these topics please do not hesitate to write to me.

Hello, I will use this space to share with you about my experience of how I got to be an intern at Outreachy. Each experience is unique and diferent ⛵️, I have read other experiences and all are really inspiring. This is mine!I hope you like it! 🙇

Outreachy is a paid, remote internship program, whose purpose is to support people from groups underrepresented in tech. They help newcomers to free software and open source make their first contributions. The internship lasts three months in any of these periods: Mayo - August or December - March.
There are three parts to the Outreachy application process:

1️⃣ Initial application period

During this period, applicants fill out an initial application form

Outreachy organizers review initial applications and their essays

2️⃣ Contribution period

During this period, applicants contact mentors and make contributions

Applicants are required to record a contribution

3️⃣ Intern selection period

Mentors tell Outreachy organizers which interns they want to select.

You can find more about it HERE

When I found out about Outreachy, I started to contact previous interns 📫, I asked about their experience in the program, I read their blogs which kept me motivated for every application I made. LinkedIn and Twitter are good tools for this, introduce yourself and politely ask them to share their experience or give you suggestions for your application. On Youtube, there are good videos of Outreachy interns.

First attempt 🏂

Let’s start with rejections 😅. Once I read the requirements, I applied for the first time to Outreachy. The amount of information that Outreachy has on the website can be overwhelming at first, but later you will realize that it is necessary and sufficient 📚. I started with my essays. I did my best to make my essays beautiful. I followed the suggestions that the organizers made for each question. They really want your application to move to the next stage!

However, I did not meet a fundamental requirement: ”Be in the country of origin with eligibility to work”. Due to the pandemic, the borders of my country closed 🚧, therefore I could not start in Outreachy. My first rejection! It was sad but the organizers of Outreachy encouraged me to apply for the next period 💪.
I encourage you to communicate with the organizers about your doubts, your concerns, be honest with them about your time commitments and they will advise you in the best way.

Second attempt 🏊

I met all the requirements this time.I was very anxious this week that Outrechy would give us the results, then I got it: "Welcome to the contribution period of the Outreachy May 2021 internship round!" yay! I passed to the contribution period! 🙌

For my contribution period I chose the Linux Kernel related projects, I didn't have much Kernel experience but decided to take that as a challenge. After a month of configurations and installations, I was unable to send a single Pull Request (PR) 😱. How frustrating was that! The listing period is closed again and and i was out again!😳

As always, after the stage of frustration comes the stage of acceptance and reflection. I started to think that I did wrong, why did it go so wrong? And my answer was to have chosen a project that I don't have much knowledge about, it was difficult for me to understand the basic concepts of the Kernel configurations. I tried it! 💪

My recommendation here is that you try to choose a project where you already have some knowledge or experience, check the "Level of experience" requested for each project. Don't pick a project unless you're sure what it's about! Outreachy has all the information about it on the website.Stay updated!

Third attempt 🏄

On my third try, I improved my essays 😇 and as if nothing had happened before (two rejections), I applied again, with a positive mind! Always thinking: I will do my best! I will be able to do multiple pull requests! I'm ready to contribute!

I went to the contribution stage again, woohoo! This time I chose the Apache Airflow project, Experience level: Bash(3), Python(4) and CI systems(2). This period lasts one month, you have to try to send a contribution, detect problems or present an improvement or a good idea, which are also considered contributions. I love that!
Our mentors gave us an introduction to Airflow, they presented really cool slides and an amazing demo. It was really good! They gave us the guidelines to start. 🚀

It has been almost two weeks since I couldn't send any contribution. So I thought the best strategy I could do is to follow the steps in the documentation and make the software work on my machine. I proposed improvements in the readme, some details were missing that could make the Docker installation process easier, I proposed these changes in the open slack channels or through GitHub. I submitted my pull request and that's how in the third week my first PR was merged 🥲.

Here my mentors played a very important role, they encouraged us to send contributions, they reviewed our changes and gave us constant feedback. My mentors considered my application for the final stage, and that's how I became an Outreachy intern! It took me time, but I am finally in! 💃

This was my experience, yours may be just an attempt, if it is what you really want, keep persevering! I will leave you with a few keys that worked for me.

👾 Do not underestimate any contribution, no matter how small it is.
👾 You will see many contributions before yours, don't let that overwhelm you, persevere! Create your own journey and have fun.
👾 Support other applicants who are trying hard to submit a contribution, encourage them too.
Collaborate! Show your positive energy, help your mentors!
👾 Think out loud, ask questions in open channels like Slack, emails, write to your mentor.
👾 Learn how to make questions
👾 Get involved, identify with the product.
👾 Ask yourself everything. What is the purpose of what I am doing? Isn't there a better way to do it?
👾 If you have improvements in mind, say it or write it, this can be the starting point of a great implementation.
👾 Most importantly, don't give up before you try and give it your all!

Thanks for read it! 🐬

My first blog as Outreachy Intern! Core Values

Hello, my name is Edith Puclla from Ayacucho, Peru in South America.

This post is about my core values as an Outreachy intern, I'll make it a bit different and talk about the core value of five people I learned a lot from this year and were my inspiration, which landed on my internship at Outreachy.

🌟 My mother
Among many other things, what I highlight about my mother is her rapid adaptation to the change, her accelerated learning of information technology in times of pandemic and her ability to search for information on Google and Youtube.

print("I admire her ability to provide solutions and her inexhaustible energy!")

I love her!

💦 Nirmal Silwal
Nirmal was my buddy for almost 8 months, since we met we had many goals in common and we decided to put together a plan to achieve them. I was very lucky to meet him. Nirmal is a very persistent person, with a positive mind, and he always has that humility to make his knowledge known, he has the patience to give details and explain the same subject two or three times, he has the virtue of sharing.

print("I admire his faith that things will always work out very well.")

🐾 Arsene Temfack
Arsene is a good friend of mine, I had the opportunity to meet him in a code evaluation that was supposed to be 20 minutes but lasted almost two hours, why? Because we were both fascinated with what Arsene had built! Arsene has managed to train in many technologies, he amazes me how much he can learn, how persistent he is to obtain his certifications and the patience he has to talk about technology. Arsese is very passionate and he loves what he does!

print("I admire his punctuality")

he hardly ever comes a minute past the hour, even if our meetings are informal.

🌱 Fabiola Jimenez
I met Fabiola because we both received the LiFT Scholarships, so we decided to get certified in Kubernetes for Developers. At first, Fabiola was very doubtful whether she had chosen the correct certification because she had no Kubernetes experience. But what a surprise! After a few weeks of training, Fabiola had mastered all the kubectl commands, she had clear explanations and her technical language was well developed. Fabiola did her best to learn!

print("I admire Fabiola for her strength to continue learning.")

🌺 Alejandra Huaman
Ale and I started to be friends this year, our interest in coding in Python brought us together. Ale does not stop learning, she is always there building things. She has supported me in several mock interviews, she takes the role of interviewer seriously and gives me all the feedback I need to improve. She always asks me: how can she help?

print("I admire Alejandra for her kindness.")

Thanks Ale, I hope to be also the support for you :')

I have wanted very much to be in Outreachy, along the way I have learned to handle rejections and this made it even more exciting.

Finally Outreachy Intern for Apache Airflow

"If you want to go fast, go alone; but if you want to go far, go together."
