Stop Calling It Free

I helped a friend update their resume recently, and I noticed something that has become surprisingly common.

They searched for a "free resume builder," picked one of the top results, spent about 30 minutes filling in their experience, adjusting formatting, and making everything look right.

Then they clicked Download.

That's when the paywall appeared.

The frustrating part wasn't that the service cost money. Companies need revenue, and that's completely reasonable.

The frustrating part was finding out only after investing time.

Imagine opening a document editor, writing an entire report, and then being told you need to pay before you can save it. Most people would leave feeling tricked, even if the product was good.

I think there's a better approach.

If your product is paid, be upfront about it. If you offer a free plan, clearly explain what it includes. Let people decide before they invest their time.

As builders, it's easy to optimize for conversions. But trust compounds over time. People remember products that respected their time just as much as products that solved their problem.

I'm curious how others feel about this.

Have you ever spent time creating a resume only to discover you couldn't download it without paying? Do you think this is a fair business model, or should products be more transparent from the start? make this shorter to post on dev.to
