Do you (still) code for fun?

So I used to code in my spare time. Working on several side projects, going to hackathons, meetups, etc. I really enjoyed it but part of why I was doing it was to improve my skills, strengthen my portfolio and potentially make a profit if it turned into a success.

But now I have a great job that challenges me and allows me to be creative in my approach to building tools.

Lately I've been getting an ich to get back into free-time coding. But I feel like it would be a waste of time now. And I'm at the point in my life where I really need to utilize my time wisely. So if I'm dedicating a chunk of time to something it has to be beneficial.

What do you guys think? Anyone in a similar situation? Or different, doesn't matter just want to get some thoughts.

Going from Windows (Lenovo 14") to MacBook Pro 13"

As the title says I just got this new Macbook Pro 13 2020. It's the first time I've ever owned a Macbook personally. It definitely is going to take some getting used to because it is significantly smaller than my old laptop.

I'm starting to second guess this purchase because it feels weird to use right now and the screen is a lot smaller. But I think with time I'll probably get used to it. Only thing is that I paid quite some money for this (about $2,100) so I guess my expectations were really high. But I do like like a lot of the features tho, especially that now I'm completely in the Apple ecosystem and all my devices just sync seamlessly. And also Mac OS has the terminal.

But what are you guys thoughts? Has anyone experienced something similar? Do you own a MBP 13"? Please share your experiences. Thanks!

DevOps Engineers, What Do You Like About Your Job?

I just recently passed my AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate exam and I really enjoyed learning about cloud computing and the different services that are offered by AWS. I'm a developer who has spent a majority of my career coding but now in my current position I am getting more into the DevOps side of things with building Jenkins pipelines and what not.

Now I want to know from those who have been DevOps engineers and even cloud solutions architects, what is it about your job that you like.

I would also like to hear the parts that you dislike as well. Thanks!

How Do You Understand a Complex Code Base?

You're new to a project and you're working with a complex code base. What are some things that you do to get comfortable with each component and really gain a clear understanding of how things work, as well as why that specific tech is being used? Here's the kicker, you have to figure it out on your own without asking the other devs questions.

I am honored to say that I recently just got a new job which I will be starting next Monday. Still the same role (Software Engineer) but the stack is almost completely different and more responsibilities. I have this week to relax and prepare for the job. Any tips/advice on how to transition into the new job?

I'm planning to making the transition from coding professionally in Java to Python. I've only worked on side projects with python (which I really enjoy) but don't have any professional experience in the language. I will be going on interviews as early as this week, any advice on how to make prepare?

What's Your Process for Designing a Website

I'm redesigning my personal site from scratch and it's a little more challenging than I expected. The main challenge I'm facing is that I have too many creative ideas I want to implement and some conflict.

My process:

Write out a plan (the layout options, potential content, images, typography, etc.)

Draw out the wireframe

Create mocks

Choose the most suitable color scheme/typography

Start designing the site.

How do you guys start out designing your site(s)? The steps, thought process, planning, etc.

Facing a Dilemma

So recently I took a break from coding (outside of my job) and side projects just to relax my mind since I had been stressing myself out. This 'vacation' away from tech has been really refreshing and I'm noticing that I have new desires such as working out, skateboarding, hanging out with friends, reading books, meeting new people, etc. It's all been a lot of fun. It reminds me of who I was pre-tech (before I started out as a software engineer)

I haven't lost my love for coding but I'm a bit hesitant to return to it. The reason being, when I get into that mode it's kind of hard to switch back. I become too analytical, too logical. I begin to overthink things, I kind of lose interest in casually hanging out with friends (no social life), always looking for a solution to things/better approach, being spontaneous becomes a challenge, etc. It's like my focus just shifts to coding and my side projects, and I get stuck in that mindset.

I'm enjoying this time away from coding although I do want to get back into it but trying to figure out how I can do that and maintain a balance.

Any of you guys experience this before? Any thoughts?

I just recently noticed something. Whenever I get into an intense coding session and finally get the will power to leave I find that I have to adjust to the real world in a way. Like I have to remind my brain to stop being so logical/technical. I could go out with my friends or just have a conversation after and I feel as though my brain is still working overtime and I find myself overthinking from time to time. Does anybody experience this?
