How I Seat a Phone Camera Before Feeding an Articulating Inspection Coil

Disclosure: I work with Endoscope Hub (endoscopehub.co.uk). The product link below is our own articulating inspection camera page.

When you inspect an engine bay, wall cavity, or pipe run with an articulating borescope, the first failure mode is usually not the tip — it is a loose phone mount that twists the moment the coil flexes. Here is the seating checklist I use before the tip goes into a dark cavity.

 1. Lock the phone before you unlock the tip

Seat the phone fully in the cradle, then tug the cable once. If the phone pivots, reseat. A half-click mount will look fine on the bench and drift as soon as the coil loads.

 2. Zero the articulation on a known surface

On a table edge, articulate left/right/up/down through the full travel. Confirm the on-screen orientation matches what your hand expects. Recalibrate or remount if left/right feel inverted.

 3. Feed coil with slack, not tension

Push from behind the tip in short strokes. Keep a soft loop of slack so articulation does not yank the mount. If you feel sudden resistance, stop and reverse — do not force past a bend you cannot see.

 4. Confirm lighting before deep travel

Check LED level on a mid-tone surface first. Too bright washes metal glare; too dim hides cracks. Adjust before you are 40 cm into a cavity.

 5. Capture a landmark frame

Take one still of a known landmark (bolt head, joint, label) before you go deeper. It is your breadcrumb if the tip rotates mid-inspect.

If you want the articulating camera setup we use for UK trade inspections, the product page is here: https://endoscopehub.co.uk/detail/pro-360-articulating-endoscope-camera/

Affiliation note: I am affiliated with Endoscope Hub / endoscopehub.co.uk; this post shares field technique and links our own product page.
