Are you a developer who values community and the open exchange of information?

Nowadays, more businesses are starting to understand the value of open-source software (OSS). Unlike commercial software, OSS puts code directly into the hands of developers. It allows them to test, change, extend, and add features as needed. As a result, businesses can enjoy a solution that fits their actual needs and goals.

So, we wanted to highlight the benefits of OSS and encourage you to join our community and the movement at large. 🤗

 Open Source Benefits 🔓

With no run-time licensing fees, organizations can have as many copies as needed — often with zero extra cost when using OSS.

Companies can end up spending a lot more on rework cost caused by choosing a quick fix in the short term. Instead, avoid technical debt by choosing a better long-term approach with extendable and reusable open source solution.

When companies move to OSS, they will never be dependent on a vendor for products and services. Thus, they can avoid vendor lock-in, which makes it hard for the user to switch to another vendor without large costs.

Freedom with the source code also allows developers to co-create unique solutions. As a result, it facilitates a constant process of peer review.

The very essence of OSS is the talented pool of developers who value community and the open exchange of information. Diversity in this pool is also essential to influence the tech industry at large. So, we invite everyone who supports the cause of OSS to join our community, regardless of technical backgrounds.

 Join our community 🥳

Feel free to join us in any of the platforms that you feel comfortable with:

RocketChat: for everyone in the community to connect and share experiences

Spectrum: developers can discuss improvements and share tips and tricks

Facebook Group: startup, marketing, sales and customer support enthusiasts can discuss the practical applications of erxes

For everyone who contributes to our open source growth marketing platform, we have a little package!🎁Learn more about this initiative or how to contribute on GitHub.

Lessons on targeted goals from a Google backed open source education project — Oppia

Here is an interview we did with Diana Chen from Oppia. Oppia Foundation is a non-profit that offers an online platform, which makes it easy to create interactive lessons. As announced on Google’s Open Source Blog in 2014, the launch of Oppia was Google’s second educational experiment.

Here are some of the key takeaways:

Keeping your focus razor sharp when it comes to overall strategy helps allocating resources wisely and also maintaining momentum.

While it is tempting to design a project that checks all your boxes, the focus should always be on the end-user.

All your larger strategic decisions should be based on evidence.

I encourage you to read the full interview, as it gives valuable advice if you are planning or already started an education project.

erxes is an open source application for the complete growth marketing lifecycle with a focus on mission and community.

Starting an open source project with no corporate backing with Ben Gubler

Today, we had the opportunity to chat with Ben Gubler, the founder of Squirrelly, an ultrafast, lightweight, modern JS template engine. He talked about his experiences scaling his early stage open source project. If there are any other developers in the early stages of project development, this interview might be interesting to you.

These are the 3 things he said he'd do differently, if he could start the project over:

Pick my tooling better

Focus on writing good tests during development

Be more confident, take more risks, reach out to people for feedback.

Also, he talked about starting a project with no corporate funding and how he approaches the challenge of monetization.

What are you thoughts on this? Did you also relate to these takeaways in some ways? 👉 Read the full interview here.

Perfection doesn’t give you an advantage if your competitors spent years building an open source community

To kick off our Open Source Growth Guidebook interview series, we had a great discussion with Norbert Sendetzky from Aimeos PHP E-Commerce Framework, an eCommerce solution that lets you easily create a webshop, online store, or marketplace.

Here are some of his insights about their open source growth success:

🧐 Open source projects aren’t things that go viral. Optimizing your page for search engines (SEO) is usually much cheaper.

😍 Developers who are enthusiastic about an open source product can convince their peers much easier to try the project than by marketing.

📢 Release early! Perfection doesn’t give you an advantage if your competitors had several years for building a community in the meantime.

➕ Open source projects have an advantage over closed source projects because it’s easier to convince people to try your product, if they can start without spending money.

🚀 If you don’t have big budgets for marketing and sales, releasing software as open source is extremely important to gain popularity and market share.

👉 Read the full interview here:

erxes is an open source Hubspot alternative.
It is a single application for the complete growth marketing lifecycle
with a focus on mission and community.
