How to install

Here is an interview we did with Diana Chen from Oppia. Oppia Foundation is a non-profit that offers an online platform, which makes it easy to create interactive lessons. As announced on Google’s Open Source Blog in 2014, the launch of Oppia was Google’s second educational experiment.

While it is tempting to design a project that checks all your boxes, the focus should always be on the end-user.
All your larger strategic decisions should be based on evidence.

Starting an open source project with no corporate backing with Ben Gubler

Today, we had the opportunity to chat with Ben Gubler, the founder of Squirrelly, an ultrafast, lightweight, modern JS template engine. He talked about his experiences scaling his early stage open source project. If there are any other developers in the early stages of project development, this interview might be interesting to you.

These are the 3 things he said he'd do differently, if he could start the project over:

Pick my tooling better
Focus on writing good tests during development
Be more confident, take more risks, reach out to people for feedback.

Also, he talked about starting a project with no corporate funding and how he approaches the challenge of monetization.

To kick off our Open Source Growth Guidebook interview series, we had a great discussion with Norbert Sendetzky from Aimeos PHP E-Commerce Framework, an eCommerce solution that lets you easily create a webshop, online store, or marketplace.

Here are some of his insights about their open source growth success:

🧐 Open source projects aren’t things that go viral. Optimizing your page for search engines (SEO) is usually much cheaper.
😍 Developers who are enthusiastic about an open source product can convince their peers much easier to try the project than by marketing.
📢 Release early! Perfection doesn’t give you an advantage if your competitors had several years for building a community in the meantime.
➕ Open source projects have an advantage over closed source projects because it’s easier to convince people to try your product, if they can start without spending money.
🚀 If you don’t have big budgets for marketing and sales, releasing software as open source is extremely important to gain popularity and market share.
