This travel eSIM guide is for developers and remote workers who need reliable mobile data abroad: setup, data needs, laptop hotspot and keeping bank OTPs working.

You land at Narita at 6:40 in the morning. The seatbelt sign is still on and your phone already wants you to approve an Okta push. Slack says checkout is returning 500s, and someone has tagged you on the PR with the fix. The airport Wi-Fi is stuck on a captive portal.

If you installed a travel eSIM before you left, this is a five-minute job. You switch the line on, approve the prompt, hotspot your laptop and merge the hotfix at the baggage belt. If you didn't, you're in a SIM counter queue with your passport out while the build stays red.

We build eSIMKite, a prepaid travel eSIM service, from Surat in India. This is the guide we'd hand a teammate before their first long work trip. It's written for people whose phone doubles as their 2FA device and, on bad days, their office internet.

 What is a travel eSIM?

An eSIM is a SIM profile stored on a chip already built into your phone. You add one by scanning a QR code, with no plastic card to swap, and many phones can run one alongside a physical SIM.

A travel eSIM is a prepaid, data-only plan for a country, a region or most of the world. You buy it online, install it at home, and it connects to a local network when you arrive. We cover 200+ destinations with plans from $0.99, and you can browse all 200+ travel eSIM destinations to see what fits your route.

Two details matter more than the headline price. Plans are data-only, so your home number stays on your physical SIM for calls, SMS and OTPs. And validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network abroad, so buying a week early doesn't cost you any days.

Travel eSIM vs roaming vs local SIM

For work travel, the useful questions are whether the connection works at the gate and whether your home number keeps receiving SMS.

Travel eSIM (data-only)

Home carrier roaming

Local physical SIM

Setup

Scan a QR code at home, about 2 minutes

Turn on roaming or buy your carrier's pack

Buy at a shop or airport counter after landing

Works when you land

Yes, if installed before you fly

Yes

Only after you've bought and set it up

Home number

Stays active on your physical SIM

Stays active

Comes out of the phone unless you have a second slot

Pricing

Prepaid, fixed price per plan

Set by your carrier, often per day

Local prepaid rates

Multi-country trips

Regional and global plans

Depends on your carrier's country list

Usually a new SIM per country

Laptop hotspot

Works on every eSIMKite plan

Depends on the pack

Depends on the operator

Roaming is the easy default, and for a two-day trip it may be all you need. On longer trips, multiply your carrier's per-day price by the number of days and compare that with a plan for your destination.

A local SIM can be good value for a long stay. The catch is the counter visit after landing, often with passport details, and on a single-slot phone your home SIM ends up in your wallet along with your OTPs.

We went through cost and setup in more depth in our eSIM vs roaming vs local SIM comparison.

How to check if your phone supports eSIM

Your phone needs eSIM hardware and has to be carrier-unlocked. Double-check the lock on phones bought through a carrier contract.

On an iPhone, open Settings > General > About. If an EID is listed, the phone has eSIM hardware. On the same screen, Carrier Lock should read "No SIM restrictions".

On Android, look for an "Add eSIM" or "Download a SIM" option in your SIM settings. On many models, dialling
*#06#
also shows an EID next to the IMEI.

Whatever the phone, check if your phone supports eSIM before you pay. Go by your exact model, since regional variants differ.

How to install an eSIM on iPhone and Android

Do this at home or at the departure gate, on Wi-Fi. The QR code arrives within minutes of buying and the install takes about two minutes. Open the QR on your laptop so the phone can scan it.

 iPhone

Go to Settings > Cellular (Mobile Data in some regions) > Add eSIM.

Pick Use QR Code and scan it.

Label the new line "Travel" so you can tell it apart from your primary.

After landing, set Cellular Data to the Travel line and turn on Data Roaming for that line.

Keep Allow Cellular Data Switching off, so iOS doesn't fall back to your home SIM's data.

 Android

Menus vary by brand, so treat these as approximate:

On Samsung, go to Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM. On a Pixel, go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs and add an eSIM.

Scan the QR code and confirm the download.

Rename the line. Once you land, set it as your mobile data SIM and turn roaming on for it.

Leave your physical SIM active for calls and SMS, with mobile data off for that line.

If a menu looks different on your phone, check our step-by-step eSIM install guide or the longer iPhone and Android eSIM setup walkthrough on our blog.

Treat the QR code like a one-time secret. In most cases it can only be installed once, so keep it out of team channels and don't delete the installed eSIM halfway through a trip.

How much data do remote workers need?

Video calls and laptop hotspot use decide most of it. Treat these as rough estimates. Video quality, background sync and Wi-Fi access move them a lot.

Work style

What a day looks like

Rough data per day

Rough total for 7 days

Light

Slack, email, 2FA, maps, some browsing, no video calls

0.3 to 0.5 GB

2 to 4 GB

Medium

Light use plus one or two video calls and some laptop hotspot

1 to 2 GB

7 to 14 GB

Heavy

Hotspot is your main connection, with several calls and regular uploads

3 to 5 GB or more

20 GB or more

If your hotel or coworking space has reliable Wi-Fi, the eSIM mostly covers airports, cabs and the odd outage, so the light row is realistic. Working from cafes on your phone's connection puts you in medium or heavy. Top-ups go onto the same eSIM, so starting small is low risk.

We go through more trip types in working out how much data you need for a trip.

Keep WhatsApp and bank OTPs working abroad

Bank OTPs, card payment confirmations and plenty of account recovery flows still go by SMS to your home number. If that SIM is in a drawer at home, you can't log in to net banking from Lisbon.

With a data-only eSIM, your physical SIM stays in the phone and keeps handling calls and SMS while the eSIM carries your data. The setup:

Keep the physical SIM switched on for calls and SMS.

Turn off mobile data and data roaming for the physical SIM.

Make the travel eSIM your mobile data line.

Before you fly, check with your home carrier that international roaming is active on your account, because some carriers won't deliver SMS abroad without it.

WhatsApp is registered to your number but runs on whatever data connection the phone has, so it keeps working on your usual number over the eSIM without re-verifying.

TOTP authenticator apps work offline. Push approvals from Okta Verify, Duo or GitHub Mobile need data, which the eSIM gives you as soon as you land. Before the trip, move important accounts from SMS codes to an authenticator app or passkeys so they stop depending on your SIM.

Our post on keeping WhatsApp and bank OTPs working while you travel goes into more detail.

Using your phone as a laptop hotspot

Hotspot and tethering work on every eSIMKite plan, on 4G or 5G where the local network has it. The catch is that a laptop on a phone hotspot will download whatever it thinks it needs. A few settings keep it in check:

Mark the connection as metered. On Windows, turn on Metered connection in the network's properties. On macOS, turn on Low Data Mode in the network's Wi-Fi details.

Pause Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive and iCloud sync until you're back on Wi-Fi.

Put off OS updates,
brew upgrade
and big
docker pull
s.

Use
git clone --depth 1
when you only need the latest commit, and let your package manager's local cache do the work.

Turn off incoming video on calls when the connection gets shaky.

Choosing the best eSIM for international travel: country, regional or global

The best eSIM for international travel depends mostly on your route. Count the countries first and pick from there.

 One country

Buy that country's plan. Some pages to start with:

Destination

Plan page

Good to know

Japan

Japan eSIM plans

1GB for 7 days at $1.99, 10GB for 30 days at $8.49

United States

USA travel eSIM

10GB for 30 days at $11.99, on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon

United Kingdom

UK eSIM for travellers

Runs on 3, EE, O2 and Vodafone

Dubai and UAE

Dubai and UAE eSIM

Runs on du and Etisalat

Bali, Indonesia

Bali eSIM plans

Or compare the Asia plan

Thailand

Thailand eSIM data

Or compare the Asia plan

Singapore

Singapore eSIM

Or compare the Asia plan

Turkey

Turkey eSIM for Istanbul and beyond

Single-country plans

Australia

Australia prepaid eSIM

Single-country plans

 Several countries in one region

For a trip through Berlin, Paris and Barcelona, one Europe eSIM covering up to 46 countries saves you buying a new plan at every border. It starts at $1.99 for 1GB over 7 days. If you're only staying in one of those countries, compare it with a France eSIM, an Italy eSIM, a Spain eSIM or a Germany eSIM.

For Asia there's a regional eSIM for up to 21 Asian countries. If you're staying put in one place, there are single-country plans too, like the Vietnam eSIM, Malaysia eSIM and South Korea eSIM.

We also have Middle East eSIM plans for Gulf trips, and a North America regional eSIM if your trip mixes the US with Canada or Mexico. For one of those on its own, see the Canada eSIM and Mexico eSIM pages. Coverage differs between plans, so check the country list on the regional page against your actual stops.

Lots of countries, or a route that keeps changing

The global eSIM that works in up to 169 countries starts at $4.99 for 1GB over 3 days. It suits conference trips with long layovers, or nomad routes you plan a week at a time.

You can pay with UPI, cards or net banking, in INR, USD, EUR, GBP, AED, SGD, AUD or CAD.

 Common travel eSIM mistakes

Installing after you land. You need a connection to download the profile, and airport Wi-Fi is unreliable.

Buying for a locked phone. If you haven't scanned the QR code yet, you can cancel the unused eSIM within 30 days, with a 2.3% refund charge. Our refund policy for unused eSIMs has the details.

Leaving data roaming on for your home SIM. Background apps will use it at your home carrier's roaming rates.

Deleting the eSIM mid-trip to "clean up" and then needing more data. Top up the same eSIM instead.

Budgeting for your phone and forgetting the laptop, which is usually where the data goes.

 Travel eSIM FAQ

Is a travel eSIM better than international roaming?

It depends on your carrier and trip length. A travel eSIM is prepaid at a fixed price, works as soon as you land, and keeps your home number active for SMS. For longer trips, compare it with your carrier's per-day roaming price times the number of days.

When should I install my travel eSIM?

Before you fly, on Wi-Fi. It takes about two minutes. Validity only starts when the eSIM connects to a network at your destination, so installing early doesn't use up any days.

Will I still get WhatsApp messages and bank OTPs?

Yes. Plans are data-only, so your physical SIM keeps your home number for calls, SMS and OTPs, and WhatsApp runs on your existing number over the eSIM's data.

Can I use a travel eSIM as a hotspot for my laptop?

Yes. Hotspot and tethering work on every eSIMKite plan, on 4G or 5G where the local network supports it.

What happens if I run out of data?

Top up the same eSIM. You don't need to reinstall anything.

 Which phones support eSIM?

One with eSIM hardware that is carrier-unlocked. Check your exact model on our compatibility page before you buy.

More answers are in our eSIM FAQ, and there are more setup and travel tips on the eSIMKite Journal blog. Before your next trip

Check your phone, pick a plan for your route, and install it on Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly. When the plane lands, switch the travel line on and you're online before the doors open.

If you want to try it, get a travel eSIM for your next trip. The eSIMKite app for iPhone and Android is coming soon. We're Vmatrix Infotech, based in Surat, and you can read more about the team behind eSIMKite.

We build eSIMKite, so we're biased. The setup advice above works the same whichever eSIM provider you pick.
