Free Etsy SEO Tools: What Each One Actually Checks (and What It Misses)

Every seller has a checklist they run before hitting publish. Most of them also have a free tool in a tab somewhere that gives them a green tick and very little else.

This is about which checks are worth making, and what each kind of free tool is honestly good for.

The four things a pre-publish check should tell you

If your pre-publish check answers all four of these, it is doing its job. Anything more is decoration.

1. Is the title within the limit, and is the product noun in the first 40 characters?
Etsy caps titles at 140 characters and discards the rest silently. But the position matters more than the count - Etsy reads titles left to right, and so do buyers. A 95-character title whose noun sits at character 14 beats a 138-character title whose noun sits at character 60.

2. Are all 13 tag slots filled, and does every tag fit inside 20 characters?
The median listing fills four or five slots. Each tag is capped at 20 characters and anything longer is dropped with no error message, no partial credit. A tag like "handmade custom personalized jewelry gift" does not become a partial tag - it does not exist.

3. Is there a buyer phrase you have never mentioned?
This is the check most sellers skip and it is the one that finds money. If buyers search "birthstone pendant" and your listing only says "custom necklace", you are invisible to a search you could have won.

4. Does the description answer the question your DMs ask most?
Every repeat DM is a description section you have not written yet. "What size is it?", "Is it dishwasher safe?", "How long does shipping take?", "Can I change the name?"

What a free check is actually good for

Free tools earn their keep in one place: catching the mechanical failures before they cost you a week of traffic.

Not every listing needs a full SEO strategy. Most need a lint pass. If you have 40 listings and you publish 5 a week, the question is not "how do I out-optimise my competitors". The question is "is anything obviously broken".

A good free check answers that in under a minute.

 A worked example

Here is a listing that looks fine and is quietly broken in four ways.

Title: Personalized Name Necklace for Women, Handmade Sterling Silver Nameplate Necklace, Custom Birthday Gift for Her
Tags: initial necklace, name necklace, sterling silver, custom jewelry, gift for her, birthday gift, minimal jewelry, layered necklace, nameplate pendant, personalized gift, silver pendant, handmade jewelry
Description: A beautiful handmade sterling silver nameplate necklace. Perfect custom gift. Made to order. 3-5 business days.

What the check catches:

Check

Result

Fix

Title length

115 characters, no truncation

Keep it

Product noun position

"necklace" first

Keep it

Tag slots filled

12 of 13

Fill the 13th

Tags over 20 chars

"silver pendant" is 14, "handmade jewelry" is 15 - all pass

Keep them

Missing buyer phrase

"birthstone" is absent from title, tags and description

Add it

Description specs

No chain length, no pendant size, no material detail

Add three specs

Five checks, two real problems. The tag count and the missing phrase. Both were invisible without the check, and both are cheap to fix.

What each kind of free tool actually checks

Keyword suggesters. Fast, cheap, and a reasonable starting point if you have never done Etsy SEO at all. They solve the hardest part of a beginner problem: finding out what buyers call your product. Search Etsy yourself and read the autocomplete - that is the same idea done manually.

Where they stop: the list is generic. A keyword tool cannot tell you that your listing already says the word, or that one of its suggestions is 24 characters long and Etsy will silently drop it. Most of them describe a category rather than your specific product, so you are doing the filtering work either way.

Scorers. Fast feedback, and genuinely good at catching the obvious failures: a title that is too short, fewer than 13 tags, tags over the character limit. For a seller who has never run a technical check, a scorer turns a vague feeling into a concrete list of things to fix.

Where they stop: scores are computed against generic rules rather than against demand. A listing can score 95 and still be invisible, because nothing in the score came from a real buyer search. And a number without a specific list of missing phrases is decoration - it is the single most common way sellers waste an afternoon, improving a listing from 60 to 90 without ever finding out that the phrase buyers actually search was never in it.

AI rewrite tools. Fast, and they handle the mechanical work of filling 13 tag slots properly. This is where the real time saving is: writing thirteen non-duplicate tags that all describe one product is tedious, and tedium is exactly where people give up and settle for five.

Where they stop: a model with no keyword data invents plausible-sounding tags that nobody searches for. It also cannot check the 20-character limit, because it is not counting characters, it is writing prose.

 On free versus paid

Here is the honest arithmetic.

Doing a listing by hand - research, write, count characters, check for repeats - takes roughly 20 to 40 minutes once you know what you are doing. The first ten listings take longer.

Listings rewritten each month

Time at 25 min each

EtsyRank Pro, monthly

5

about 2 hours

USD 9

20

about 8 hours

USD 9

50

about 21 hours

USD 9

100

about 42 hours

USD 9

The break-even point is low, because the free tier already lets you check the output quality on one listing. If that single rewrite does not save you twenty minutes, it is not worth a subscription either.

A 20-minute routine that actually holds

Here is the version that survives contact with a real shop week:

Monday, 10 minutes. Run one checker pass over your five most recent listings. Fix anything under 60 straight away. Do not re-run it on the same listing twice in a week - the score does not change unless you change the listing.

Mid-week, 5 minutes. When a DM asks a question you have answered before, add the answer to that listing's description. One question, one edit, five minutes.

Monthly, 30 minutes. Pick your ten worst listings by impressions. Run a demand check on all ten. Rewrite the two worst titles and refill their empty tag slots.

That is 45 minutes a month and it covers the four checks that actually matter. The sellers who beat everyone on Etsy are almost never the ones with the most sophisticated tooling - they are the ones who did the small thing every week without skipping it.

Where to check the official standards

site:help.etsy.com
listing quality and search visibility

site:help.etsy.com
listing title character limit

site:help.etsy.com
listing quality score

The point of checking at all

Checking is not about hitting a number. It is about not leaving inventory on the table.

Etsy gives you 13 tag slots, a 140-character title and a description with no length limit. Every seller who fills 4 of 13 slots and stops is leaving searchable surface unused - and the difference between a listing that ranks and a listing that merely exists is usually a handful of phrases you never thought of.

Start with the free check. Run it on the ten listings you are least proud of. Fix what it finds. If it names a buyer phrase you have never mentioned, that is your next four weeks of traffic, and it cost you a paste.

Etsy Listing Description Templates: Five Formats You Can Paste Straight In

Most Etsy descriptions are two sentences of adjectives followed by a wall of emoji. They are readable, warm, and completely wasted.

The description is not a place to tell a buyer how much you love your craft. It is a search surface and a question-answering surface, and it does two jobs that the title cannot:

It carries the long-tail phrases your 20-character tags cannot hold.

It answers the buyer questions that would otherwise become a DM.

Get those two right and the description stops being decoration.

Here are five templates that do it, with the worked examples.

What a description is actually for

Etsy matches on titles, tags and descriptions together. A term that appears consistently across all three fields is a far stronger signal than the same term in one.

But descriptions are not indexed the way tags are. There is no 20-character cap, there is no 13-slot limit. That makes the description the natural home for the long phrases your tags had to clip - "handmade sterling silver birthstone name necklace for her" fits comfortably in a description and cannot fit in a tag slot at all.

The second job is quieter but more valuable. Every seller has a set of questions they answer over and over - "what size is it?", "is it dishwasher safe?", "how long does shipping take?", "can I change the name?". Every one of those is a reason a buyer does not order. Answer it in the description and you have removed a step between interest and checkout.

The first 160 characters matter most

On mobile, Etsy shows roughly the first 160 characters of a description before the "Read more" cut. Buyers on phones are a large share of Etsy traffic, and most of them never expand the field.

That means your first two lines are a summary, not an introduction. If the summary is "I love making handmade ceramics!", a buyer who searched "stoneware mug" has learned nothing and bounces.

Put the searchable facts first. Always.

 Template 1: the universal fill-in-the-blank

[One-line summary with the primary keyword and the key spec]
[What it is made of / what you get]
[Two or three differentiators]
[Delivery details]
[Care or usage note]

Worked example, for a personalized mug:

A personalised stoneware mug with your name hand-stamped on it, fired at 1200°C so the lettering will not wash off.

Each mug is 14 oz / 400 ml, dishwasher and microwave safe, and finished with a food-safe cobalt glaze.

• Hand-stamped in our studio - every name is slightly different
• Stoneware body, not ceramic - it holds heat longer and chips less
• Dishwasher and microwave safe
• Ships in 2-4 business days in recyclable kraft packaging

Please note the glaze creates soft variations in tone. That is a feature of the firing process, not a flaw.

Order the size and the name spelling at checkout - we will confirm the details with you by message before making it.

Character count of the visible first paragraph: 148. Everything a buyer needs to know to keep reading is above the fold.

 Template 2: the gift-buyer template

Gift buyers are not shopping for a product, they are shopping for a person. The template should mirror that.

[Occasion and recipient in the opening line]
[What makes it a gift - personalisation, packaging, or sentiment]
[Specs and dimensions]
[Delivery and gift wrapping]

Worked example:

A personalised birthday gift for her that she will actually use every morning - her name hand-stamped on a stoneware mug that holds 14 oz of coffee.

We send it in a kraft gift box with a handwritten note, so it arrives ready to hand over.

• 14 oz / 400 ml stoneware, food-safe glaze
• Name hand-stamped, up to 12 characters
• Dishwasher and microwave safe
• Gift box and handwritten note included at no extra cost
• Ships in 2-4 business days

Add her name and the message for the note at checkout.

Why this works: "birthday gift for her" is a phrase with a demand score of 91 in our measured set, carried by 2,030 live listings. It appears in the first 26 characters, before the product noun. For a gift search, that is the correct order.

 Template 3: the digital-download template

Digital products need a different emphasis, because the buyer's fear is not quality - it is "will this actually work for me?".

[Format and what they get, first line]
[Software, file formats, and whether it is editable]
[Step-by-step: how to get it and open it]
[Print or screen specs]
[Support and licence notes]

Worked example:

A fully editable wedding invitation template in Canva - 5x7 and A4 sizes, plus a matching RSVP card, ready in about five minutes.

Everything is editable in free Canva. You get one .canva file (5 pages) and a PDF export for printing at home or at a print shop.

How it works:
1. After purchase you get a download link by email.
2. Open the link, click "Edit in Canva" - no Canva Pro needed.
3. Type your names, dates and venue, then download the PDF.

Print size is 5x7 in / 148 x 210 mm. The RSVP card is 5x5 in. Fonts are all free Canva fonts, so there is nothing extra to buy.

This is a personal-use licence. You may print as many copies as you like for your own event.

 Template 4: the SEO-first description

This one is for sellers whose long-tail traffic matters more than warmth. It is deliberately repetitive in a way a human description would not be, because the phrases are doing work.

[Keyword-rich opening sentence, 120-160 characters]
[Second sentence with two long phrases]
[Specs]
[Three short paragraphs, one phrase each]
[Keyword-rich closing line]

Worked example:

Personalised birthstone name necklace for her, handmade sterling silver pendant with a genuine birthstone set in the centre.

Each birthstone name necklace is hand-assembled in our studio from recycled sterling silver and set with your chosen stone - the same stone that represents your birth month, or hers.

**Materials.** Recycled sterling silver, genuine birthstone, 18-20 inch chain with a 2 inch extender.
**Dimensions.** Pendant 14 mm, birthstone 6 mm, chain 45-50 cm.
**Personalisation.** Up to 10 characters, hand-stamped on the back of the pendant.

**How to order.** Choose the stone from the dropdown, then type the exact spelling of the name in the note field.

**Delivery.** Made to order and shipped in 3-5 business days in a gift-ready box.

Every order is photographed before it ships, so you can see the finished piece.

It reads less like a poem and more like a specification sheet. For a listing targeting a specific search, that is usually the right trade.

 Template 5: the five-line ultra-short

For listings where the photos say everything and the product is simple, five lines is enough. Length is not a ranking factor.

[Product + key spec]
[Material]
[One differentiator]
[Delivery]
[One instruction for the buyer]

Worked example:

Solid brass hoop earrings, 30 mm, 4g.
Surgical steel posts, nickel free.
Handmade in batches of five, so each pair is slightly different.
Ships in 2-3 business days.
Pick your size in the dropdown - medium is the default.

Five lines, 62 words. If the photos are good, that is enough.

Weak versus strong: the same product, two descriptions

Weak:

✨ Beautiful handmade necklace 💝 Perfect gift idea for her! 🎁 Comes in a lovely box 💕 Great for birthdays, anniversaries and more! ❤️ Ships fast! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Strong:

A personalised birthstone name necklace for her, handmade sterling silver pendant with a genuine birthstone set in the centre.

Materials: recycled sterling silver, genuine birthstone, 18-20 inch chain.
Pendant 14 mm, stone 6 mm. Up to 10 characters, hand-stamped on the back.

Choose your stone from the dropdown and type the exact spelling in the note field.

Made to order and shipped in 3-5 business days in a gift-ready box.

Same product. The weak version contains zero searchable phrases and zero information a buyer could act on. The strong version contains four distinct search intents, five concrete specs, and answers the customisation and delivery questions.

The weak version is also the reason that seller keeps getting the same DM: "wait, how long does it take to arrive?" The answer is right there in the strong version, in the first screen, before anyone has to ask.

 The description checklist

Does the primary keyword appear in the first 160 characters?

Are there at least three concrete specs - size, material, capacity, weight?

Does it say how long delivery takes?

Does it say what the buyer needs to do - customisation, format, size selection?

Is there at least one long phrase that could not fit in a 20-character tag?

Would it still make sense with all the emoji and exclamation marks deleted?

Does it answer the question your DMs ask most?

That last one is the highest-value item on the list. If you have three repeat DMs, you have three description sections to write.

 Where to go next

The description is the third of the three text fields, and it is the one most sellers write last and check least. If you want the mechanical checks automated - title length, all 13 tag slots filled against measured buyer demand, and a description with the missing buyer terms named - the free Etsy SEO checker takes one paste and shows every rule it applies. No account, no card.

Is Etsy SEO Worth Doing by Hand? We Did the Maths

There are three ways to get your Etsy listings found: do it yourself, pay a general AI tool to write it, or pay a tool that already has the buyer search data.

Here is what each one actually costs you, in money and in hours.

The reference prices used here: USD 9 per month or USD 90 per year (USD 7.50 per month), one free rewrite included before you pay anything, and a two-day full refund on the paid plan.

 The prices, side by side

Doing it by hand: 20-40 minutes per listing, in your time. You research, write, count characters and hope.

A general AI writing tool: prompt plus proofing. A general subscription fee, plus the time to prompt it and verify every tag by hand.

A demand-ranked rewriter: USD 9 per month or USD 90 per year. Unlimited rewrites, batch CSV import, two-day full refund. One free rewrite before you pay.

Line by line: what each way of working gives you

Factor

By hand

General AI writing tool

Demand-ranked rewriter

What you actually pay

Your own hours, typically 20-40 min per listing

A general AI subscription, plus your time checking every tag by hand

USD 9/month or USD 90/year

Where the keywords come from

Your own head, plus whatever a browser suggestion box offers

The model writes from training data, then improvises

A dictionary harvested from 1,128 live search results (504 phrases, 457 usable)

Who decides the tag order

You, on instinct

The model, in whatever order it happened to write them

Demand rank - the phrases buyers actually searched, most searched first

The 20-character Etsy tag rule

You count characters, one tag at a time

Not checked. Long tags get silently dropped by Etsy

Checked before you see the output. The longest phrase in the shipped dictionary is exactly 20 characters

Number of tags produced

Whatever you can think of in the time you have

Often fewer than 13, or padded with repeats

Exactly 13, every slot filled

Scoring

None. You publish and hope

Usually a self-assessment of its own writing

A score out of 100 that names every lost point and the missing buyer term

When you get the answer

Immediately, if you have the time to sit with it

Immediately, if the model cooperates

Immediately, and if the model misbehaves you get a rule-based result instead of an error page

Rewrites per month

As many as you can stomach

Limited by your own prompt-writing patience

Unlimited, with one free rewrite before that

Batch rewrite of a whole catalogue

Not realistic

Would need a script and a lot of pasting

CSV import

Refund if it does not work for you

N/A

Whatever the provider offers, and it rarely covers your lost time

Two-day full refund

This compares categories of tool rather than named products. It is more useful, and it does not send you off to a competitor to find out the rest.

When the tool pays for itself

Doing a listing by hand is not free. It is just paid in hours.

If a rewrite takes you 25 minutes and a listing takes you two hours to do properly, the shop is paying you to run a spreadsheet instead of selling.

Listings rewritten each month

Time at 25 min each

Cost, monthly plan

5

about 2 hours

USD 9

20

about 8 hours

USD 9

50

about 21 hours

USD 9

100

about 42 hours

USD 9

The break-even point is low because the free tier already lets you check the output quality on one listing. If that single rewrite does not save you twenty minutes, it is not worth a subscription either.

Where the 25 minutes actually go

The honest breakdown of a manual optimisation, for a listing where you already know the product:

Task

Time

Researching what buyers call your product

5-10 min

Writing 13 tags with no repeated words and no character overrun

10-15 min

Counting characters, checking for duplicates and over-length tags

2-5 min

Rewriting the title and description around the same phrases

5-10 min

None of it is difficult. It is dull work, and dull work is where people stop.

Here is the compounding effect. The median listing fills four or five of its thirteen tag slots. Not because five is enough - because filling the rest means guessing, and a wrong guess can cost you. A bad tag drags down relevance, and an over-long one is thrown away by the platform with no error message at all.

That gap is the whole game. A seller with a strong product should reach for the mid-demand phrases where competition is thinner, not the head terms everyone is fighting over.

 The free-tier test

Before you subscribe to anything, run this:

Take one listing you have already published - preferably one that underperforms.

Run it through a free rewriter.

Count the characters on all 13 tags. Any over 20, and the tool does not know Etsy.

Check whether the phrases are ones a buyer would actually type, or ones a language model found plausible.

Time it. If it did not save you 20 minutes, it will not save you 20 minutes on listing number 50 either.

 Pricing questions, answered

Why is a year USD 90 when a month is USD 9?
Paying for twelve months at once is cheaper for both of us: you pay USD 7.50 per month, and the plan stays active without you having to think about it. The monthly plan is USD 9 with no commitment, so you can start monthly and switch once you are sure it earns its place.

Can I try it before paying anything?
Yes. Every visitor gets one free listing rewrite: a rewritten title, 13 tags, a score out of 100 and the missing buyer terms. No card, no charge. If it is not useful, you have lost nothing but the one rewrite.

What if I pay and it does not work for my shop?
Request a refund within two days and you get a full refund - no questions, no partial credit. The policy is written out on the refund page rather than hidden behind a support ticket.

Is the cheap price a trial that auto-renews into something larger?
No. USD 9 per month is the monthly price and USD 90 per year is the yearly price. There is no third tier, no usage overage and no feature that unlocks after you have paid. The plan you pick is the plan you get.

How does this compare with paying for another AI writing tool?
A general writing tool charges you for tokens, and it still leaves you to invent the keywords, count the characters and work out whether a tag is any good. A tool with the data and the checks bundled means the work you are actually buying is the research, not the typing.

 The bottom line

Run the free-tier test on one listing before you spend anything. If it saves you twenty minutes, the maths is easy and the subscription is justified.

If it does not, do it by hand. Doing Etsy SEO properly is not expensive. It is just tedious, and tedium is exactly what the price is supposed to buy back.

Etsy Title Templates: Six Structures That Fit Inside 140 Characters

Etsy gives you 140 characters for a listing title. The median seller uses about 70 of them on words that describe nothing, then wonders why the listing is hard to find.

This is not a writing problem. It is an allocation problem. You have 140 slots, you need to fill them with searchable intent, and the order you put them in determines how much of the tail survives.

Here are six title structures you can paste straight into a listing, with the character counts worked out, plus the reasoning behind each one.

The rule that makes the rest work

Etsy reads titles left to right. Buyers scan them left to right. The earliest words carry the most weight inside the title field.

So the 140 characters are not a budget to fill. They are a budget to front-load.

If your primary keyword sits at character 118, you have written a title that works for exactly one search and buries your best term behind eleven words of preamble.

One practical target before the templates: aim for 80-130 characters of readable title. Long enough to carry a product noun, a qualifier, an occasion and a synonym tail. Short enough that a phone screen shows the whole thing without cutting off the payoff phrase.

The four-part structure every template is built from

Read any good Etsy title as four parts in order:

What it is - the exact product noun ("initial name necklace")

The defining detail - the feature that makes yours different ("personalized birthstone pendant")

Who or what it is for - recipient or occasion ("custom gift for her")

The searchable tail - synonyms and materials buyers also type ("sterling silver necklace birthday present")

What it is, the detail, the occasion, the tail. Every template below is a different way of filling those four slots for a different product type.

A before and after, with the numbers

Before:

Handmade Personalized Custom Initial Name Necklace for Women Gift, Birthstone Birth Month Gift for Her, Sterling Silver Pendant Necklace, Birthday Present for Girlfriend Wife

That is 192 characters. At 140, everything after the comma following "Gift" is discarded. No error, no warning, the listing saves fine.

The seller believes they covered "birthstone", "birth month", "sterling silver", "birthday present" and "girlfriend". They covered none of them.

What actually survives in the index:

Handmade Personalized Custom Initial Name Necklace for Women Gift, Birthstone Birth Month Gift for Her, Sterling Silver Pendant

Look at the front: "Handmade Personalized Custom Initial" is four slots spent saying almost nothing. The word "necklace" - the actual product noun, the thing buyers type - does not appear until character 51.

After:

Personalized Birthstone Pendant for Women, Custom Gift for Her, Sterling Silver Necklace Birthday Present

That is 124 characters. Nothing is truncated.

Measure

Before

After

Characters 1-25

Handmade Personalized Custom

Initial Name Necklace

Product noun appears at

character 51

character 13

Distinct intents covered in 140 chars

3

6

Wasted leading words

4

0

The rewritten title covers more search intents in fewer characters. That is the whole point.

Truncation is not really the enemy - padding is. A padded title loses characters to filler, and then loses the tail to the limit.

 Template 1: the universal four-part

[Product noun], [defining detail], [occasion or recipient], [synonym or material tail]

Fill-in example for a ceramic mug:

Custom Name Mug, Handmade Stoneware Coffee Cup, Birthday Gift for Her, Personalized Ceramic Latte Cup

Character count: 99.

Use this when you sell a physical product with a clear noun and one differentiating feature. It is the safest default and it is the structure most sellers should start with.

 Template 2: the gift-buyer template

Gift searches dominate Etsy. Phrases like "gift for her", "birthday gift for her" and "gift for mom" show up across our measured buyer-phrase set with demand scores of 92, 91 and 93 respectively, and the listings carrying them run into the thousands - 2,890 listings for "gift for her", 2,030 for "birthday gift for her".

[Occasion] [Product noun] for [Recipient], [Defining detail], [Material or synonym]

Fill-in example:

Birthday Gift for Mom, Personalized Name Necklace, Handmade Clay Bead, Sterling Silver Birthstone Pendant

Character count: 100.

Put the occasion first here on purpose. When the buyer is shopping a gift, they are searching the occasion, not your product type. The product noun still lands inside the first 40 characters, so you do not lose the category signal.

 Template 3: the material-led template

For jewellery, ceramics, leather and metal work, material is a strong filter and buyers type it explicitly.

[Material] [Product noun] [Defining detail], [Occasion or recipient], [Synonym]

Fill-in example:

Sterling Silver Name Necklace, Personalized Birthstone Pendant, Gift for Her, Custom Initial Chain

Character count: 99.

Note the order: material first, noun second. Buyers filtering by "sterling silver" want to see it immediately, and the noun stays within the first 20 characters so the category signal survives.

 Template 4: the digital-download template

Digital products are searched differently. The buyer is searching for the format and the problem, not the object.

[Format] [Topic] [Who it's for], [What they get], [File type or style]

Fill-in example:

Printable Wedding Invitation Template, Rustic Minimalist, Editable Canva Template, 5x7 A4 Digital Download

Character count: 101.

Etsy digital listings live or die on the format phrase. "Printable", "template", "SVG", "PDF", "editable" are all high-intent modifiers that buyers type into the search box.

 Template 5: the ultra-short template

Some products do not need 140 characters. A simple, well-understood item can outperform a stuffed title.

[Product noun], [one qualifier], [one occasion]

Fill-in example:

Gold Initial Necklace, Dainty Layered Chain, Birthday Gift for Her

Character count: 63.

Use this only when the product noun is unambiguous. If a buyer could call it three different things, every word you drop is a search you lose.

 Template 6: the attribute-first template

If your product has a strong functional attribute - waterproof, adjustable, dishwasher safe, reusable - put it up front. Attribute filters convert browsing into intent.

[Attribute] [Product noun], [Defining detail], [Occasion], [Synonym]

Fill-in example:

Adjustable Gold Chain Bracelet, Dainty Charm, Gift for Her, Everyday Wear Layered Bracelet

Character count: 94.

 A length cheat sheet

Title length

What to do

Under 50 characters

Too short. You are leaving search intents unclaimed. Add a qualifier and an occasion.

50-80 characters

Reasonable for a very simple product. Often fine as-is.

80-130 characters

The sweet spot. Primary term, detail, occasion and tail all fit.

130-140 characters

Tight but valid. Make sure the primary term is in the first 40 characters.

Over 140 characters

Truncated or rejected. Whatever is past the limit is not indexed.

Nine mistakes that quietly cost you clicks

Keyword stuffing. "Necklace Necklace Silver Necklace Gift" - Etsy already de-duplicates, and you just look desperate.

Leading brand names. Unless you are the brand, a famous brand name in your title costs you relevance for your own product.

Price and shipping words. "Free shipping cheap discount sale" - Etsy filters on price already. This is dead weight in a 140-character budget.

Front-loading the filler. "Handmade Personalized Custom Beautiful" - four words that describe nothing.

Writing one long sentence. Commas separate search-relevant segments. Etsy reads each segment; a title without commas reads as one long phrase.

Burying the noun. If "necklace" is not in the first 40 characters, the title is working against itself.

Ignoring the tail. The last 20 characters are a free slot for synonyms - use them.

Punctuation and hashtags. Etsy strips them. Zero return, wasted characters.

Leaving the title stale. Renaming a listing every couple of weeks is one of the cheapest refresh signals you have.

 A 10-minute title checklist

Does the product noun appear in the first 40 characters?

Is the total length between 80 and 130?

Does the title contain commas separating distinct keyword phrases?

Is every one of the 140 characters doing work?

Have you removed price, shipping and "best/cheap" words?

Do you have a synonym for the tail that buyers actually type?

Does it read as a phrase a human would say?

Where tags come in, and why the title carries the long phrases

A title is only half your search surface. Tags are the other half, and they behave differently: tags are how Etsy finds listings that a buyer's query did not literally match.

The catch is that each tag is capped at 20 characters, and anything longer is discarded silently - no error, no partial credit. A tag like "handmade custom personalized jewelry gift" does not become a partial tag. It does not exist.

That constraint has an interesting implication for titles. Since long phrases get clipped in tags, the title is where your longer multi-word phrases must live. If "initial name necklace" is worth saying, it belongs in the title, not squeezed into a 20-character tag slot.

The circularity trap in most tag tools

Most tag generators read your own title and hand the words back to you. That is circular. If you never knew buyers search "birthstone pendant", re-reading your own listing will never surface it, because the phrase was never in there to begin with.

The fix is to source tags from a dictionary of phrases real buyers actually used, rather than from your own copy. When we built ours, we harvested 1,128 live listings across 23 keyword seeds (23/23 successful runs), which yielded 504 distinct buyer search phrases, of which 457 survived a filter that strips specification strings and duplicates. Every suggestion is drawn from those 457 phrases.

 The bottom line

The 140-character limit is real, but treating it as a target is the mistake. Treat it as a hard stop and front-load.

Every character you spend on filler is a character stolen from a keyword, and the tail you think is still there is not.

Pick one of the six templates above, drop it into your ten slowest listings, and count the characters before you publish. If you want the same check automated - title length, all 13 tag slots filled against real buyer demand, and a score out of 100 with the missing terms named - the free Etsy SEO checker does it in one paste, no account needed.

There are three kinds of tool in the Etsy SEO category and they are not substitutes for each other. Most people pay for the wrong one.

This compares the kinds of tool rather than named products - it is more useful, and it does not send you to a competitor to find out.

 1. Keyword suggesters

What they do: give you a list of words for a product type.

What they are good for: fast, cheap, and a reasonable starting point if you have never done Etsy SEO. They solve the hardest part of a beginner problem: finding out what buyers call your product at all. Many sellers start by searching Etsy themselves and reading the autocomplete suggestions, which is the same idea done manually.

Where they fall short: the list is generic. A keyword tool cannot tell you that your listing already says it, or that one of its suggestions is 24 characters long and Etsy will silently drop it. You still have to write the tags yourself, and you still have to decide which of the twenty suggestions matter. Most of them describe a category rather than your specific product, so you end up doing the same filtering work either way.

Worth paying for? Only as a free first step. If a tool in this category wants monthly payment for a word list you could have written yourself in ten minutes of Etsy searches, it is not worth it.

 2. Scorers

What they do: give your listing a number and a grade.

What they are good for: fast feedback, and good for catching the obvious mistakes - a title that is too short, fewer than 13 tags, tags over the character limit. For a seller who has never run a technical check on a listing, a scorer can turn a vague feeling into a concrete list of things to fix, which is genuinely more than most sellers get on their own.

Where they fall short: they usually score against generic rules rather than against demand. A listing can score 95 and still be invisible in search, because nothing in the score came from a real buyer search. The deeper problem is that a score tells you where you are, not what to do next.

A number without a specific list of missing phrases is decoration, and it is the single most common way sellers waste an afternoon: they improve a listing from 60 to 90 and never find out that the phrase buyers actually search was never in it.

Worth paying for? Worth it as a checklist, not as a strategy. Keep using it for the mechanical checks, but do not treat the number as a ranking forecast.

 3. AI rewrite tools

What they do: write a new title, tags and description for you.

What they are good for: fast, and they handle the mechanical work of filling 13 tag slots properly. This is where the real time saving is: writing thirteen non-duplicate tags that all describe one product is tedious, and tedium is exactly where people give up and settle for five. A rewrite tool that actually produces thirteen usable slots removes the step that most sellers abandon.

Where they fall short: this is where it gets worse. A model with no keyword data invents plausible-sounding tags that nobody searches for. It also cannot check the 20-character limit, because it is not counting characters, it is writing prose. And when the model happens to ramble past its output budget, the whole rewrite collapses.

The test: ask the tool for the 13 tags, then count the characters of each one yourself. If two of them are over 20, the tool is not checking Etsy. It is writing prose that happens to contain words.

Worth paying for? Only if the underlying data is real. A rewrite is only as good as the phrase list behind it.

The five questions to ask any Etsy SEO tool

Where do the phrases come from? A real dictionary of phrases buyers typed, or a language model's imagination? "Personalised", "personalized" and "personlised" are all plausible to a model and only one of them is searched.

Does it enforce Etsy's 20-character tag limit? If the tool does not tell you a tag was dropped, it is not modelling Etsy.

Does it fill 13 slots, or does it suggest? Suggesting leaves the hardest part - deciding which of twenty phrases matter - to you.

Does it show the reasoning? "Score 72" is decoration. "You lose 8 points because your title buries the noun at character 51" is actionable.

Does it name the phrases you missed? This is the one question that separates a tool that reports a problem from a tool that solves it.

If a tool answers all five, it is in a different category from the ones that answer none.

What manual Etsy SEO actually costs you

The honest number: 20 to 40 minutes per listing, once you know what you are doing.

That time breaks down roughly like this:

Researching what buyers call your product: 5-10 minutes

Writing 13 tags with no repeated words and no character overrun: 10-15 minutes

Counting characters and checking for duplicates: 2-5 minutes

Rewriting the title and description around the same phrases: 5-10 minutes

None of this is difficult work. It is dull work, and dull work is where people stop. The median listing fills four or five of its thirteen tag slots, and the reason is almost never "I don't know what to put in them" - it is "I got bored".

When a free tool is genuinely enough

You have fewer than about 20 listings and are not refreshing them.

You already know your buyer phrases from five years of reading your DMs and search terms.

Your categories are narrow and your titles are already keyword-led.

Use a free checker for the mechanical pass and get on with it.

What "AI rewrite" has to mean to be worth anything

The rewrite is the easy part. Any model can write a title. What makes a rewrite worth paying for is everything around it:

The phrases came from measured buyer demand, not from a model's priors.

All 13 slots are filled, with no word repeated across tags.

Every tag is inside 20 characters, checked before you see it.

The order is demand-ranked, so slot 1 is not random.

The score names the missing terms, not just the number.

A decision guide: which type should you actually use?

If you...

Use

Why

Have never checked a listing for SEO

A free scorer

It turns a vague feeling into a list of fixes. Costs nothing.

Do not know what buyers call your product

A keyword suggester

Cheapest possible way to find the vocabulary.

Fill 4 or 5 of 13 tag slots and stop

An AI rewrite tool

The tedium is the bottleneck, not the knowledge.

Score well but get no clicks

Photos and price, not a tool

No text tool fixes a phone snapshot on a kitchen table.

Already have your phrases and just need them applied

A demand-ranked rewriter

The bottleneck is application, not research.

 Where this tool sits

We built a rewriter on a dictionary harvested from 1,128 live listings across 23 keyword seeds (23/23 successful runs), which yielded 504 distinct buyer search phrases, of which 457 survived a filter that strips specification strings and duplicates. The longest phrase in that shipped dictionary is exactly 20 characters - it had to be, because Etsy drops anything longer.

We are not claiming it is the only way to do this. If you have your own phrase list and you like writing tags by hand, hand-written tags with a checker as a second pair of eyes will beat anything.

But if the reason you are on four tags out of thirteen is that thirteen tags is a chore, the chore is the thing to buy.

 Questions people actually ask

Is an Etsy SEO score enough on its own? No. It tells you what is broken; it cannot write the replacement, and it cannot tell you whether your phrases have demand.

Should I use more than one tool? A keyword suggester plus a checker is a reasonable combination - one finds the vocabulary, the other verifies the mechanics. Two rewriters will usually fight.

Will a rewrite hurt my SEO? Only if you let it. A rewrite that invents phrases nobody searches, or tags over 20 characters, will do worse than what you had.

How many tools do I need? One for research, one for checks, and the discipline to read the output.

 The bottom line

Match the tool to the step you are stuck on. Most sellers are not stuck on knowledge - they know what a good title looks like. They are stuck on the boring third of the job, thirteen times per listing.

Buy that third if it is costing you more than it costs.

Etsy SEO Score: What It Can Tell You and What It Cannot

Every "Etsy SEO score" tool shows you a number out of 100 and a coloured grade. Almost all of them present that number with more authority than it has earned.

Here is the uncomfortable truth, followed by the parts that are genuinely useful and the parts that are decoration.

The uncomfortable truth about SEO scores

Every score is a made-up formula. Somebody decided that a title of the right length is worth ten points and a description above 200 characters is worth eight, then drew a circle.

That circle is not Etsy. It is one person's opinion about Etsy, encoded.

Which does not make scores useless. It makes them a checklist with a number attached. Use them to catch the obvious mistakes, then ignore the number and optimise for buyers.

What an SEO score can genuinely tell you

These five checks are reliable, because each one is a hard platform constraint or an objective content gap - not a matter of opinion.

1. Your title is empty, truncated, or absurdly long.
This is a hard platform constraint, not an opinion. Etsy caps titles at 140 characters and silently discards whatever is past the limit.

2. You are using fewer than 13 tags.
Unused slots are objectively wasted inventory. The median listing fills between four and five.

3. Your tags repeat words already in your title.
Etsy de-duplicates, so the redundancy is measurable. A tag set where "gold" appears three times is three slots doing one slot's work.

4. Your keyword never appears in the first few words.
Placement is a well-understood matching signal. Burying your product noun at character 90 works against you even when the phrase is technically present.

5. Your description answers no buyer question.
Objective content gap: no specs, no delivery information, no customisation instructions.

Five reliable checks. That is what a score is actually made of when it is built honestly.

What an SEO score absolutely cannot tell you

Whether you will outrank a competitor. That depends on the other listing, the buyer's intent, and current inventory. No formula over your own text can know that.

Whether anyone will click. Click-through is a photo and price problem. Photos are not in your text.

Whether anyone will buy. Conversion depends on reviews, shipping speed, trust signals and price.

Whether your keywords are competitive. That requires live search-volume and competitor data - real numbers, not a checklist.

Whether a tag is "good". A tag's value depends on what the other 12 tags are and what your competition looks like. "Birthday gift for her" alone is excellent; it is also carried by 2,030 live listings.

Why a high score can still fail

Here is a listing that scores near-perfectly on almost every tool and then sells nothing.

Title: Personalized Name Necklace for Women, Handmade Sterling Silver Nameplate Necklace, Custom Birthday Gift for Her, Minimalist Chain
Tags: initial necklace, name necklace, sterling silver, custom jewelry, gift for her, birthday gift, minimal jewelry, layered necklace, nameplate pendant, personalized gift, silver pendant, handmade jewelry, dainty necklace
Description: A beautiful handmade sterling silver nameplate necklace. Perfect custom gift. Made to order. 3-5 business days.

Structurally it passes. And it still fails, because the first photo is a phone snapshot on a kitchen table, the price is 30% above the median for the category, the shop has 12 reviews, and the description never says whether the chain is adjustable.

A score cannot see any of that. And those four things are worth more than every point the score awarded.

The six factors that actually move Etsy search ranking

If you only have time to fix five things, fix these. They are roughly ordered by impact per hour spent.

1. Text relevance. Title, tags and description must agree, and must cover the terms buyers type. Consistency beats density. Every long phrase that appears in your title and your description is worth more than the same phrase stuffed into a tag twice.

2. Title quality and clarity. A readable, keyword-led title wins clicks over a stuffed one. Humans decide the click.

3. Photo quality. This drives click-through, which is the input the ranking ultimately cares about. It is why photo is often bigger than tags, and it is the factor most keyword tools cannot influence at all.

4. Conversion rate. Price, photos, description clarity, reviews and shipping all feed this. A listing that converts gets surfaced more - which is the loop that separates a listing that ranks from a listing that merely exists.

5. Listing freshness and velocity. Sales velocity and freshness signals matter. Renewing a listing with updated photos is a legitimate tactic, not a trick.

6. Shop and service signals. On-time shipping, low cancellation rate and review health feed long-term visibility. Etsy publishes these standards publicly.

One caveat worth stating plainly: Etsy does not publish the specific weights it gives to any individual factor. Treat any third-party claim about exact ranking weights - including ours - as unconfirmed.

How to use a score without being fooled by it

1. Use it as a lint check, not a verdict. Fix anything under 60, then stop looking at the number.

2. Ask "why" for every point lost. A tool that cannot explain a deduction is a random number generator. If it says you lost 7 points on tag length, it should show you which tag.

3. Never optimise for the score itself. Stuffing to win points is the fastest way to lose a customer. A listing that reads like it was written for a robot does not get clicked by one.

4. Track real impressions and clicks. Etsy's own stats are the only ground truth. A score is a hypothesis; clicks are the test.

5. Compare against your own baseline. Your last 20 listings matter more than anyone else's theoretical model. If your median score is 72 and this one is 68, and it sells more, the model is wrong and your instinct is right.

A 20-minute Etsy SEO audit you can run yourself

Pick your three best-performing listings. What do their first titles have in common?

Pick your three worst. Do they share a title problem, a photo problem or a price problem?

Check tag slot usage across 10 listings. How many have all 13 filled?

Find one title where the keyword is buried in the middle. Rewrite it with the keyword first.

Read your best description. Does it answer the question your DMs ask most?

Look at the first three photos of your top listing. Are they better than the rest of your shop?

That last check is not an SEO check at all, and it is usually the highest-value one on the list.

Where to check the official standards

site:help.etsy.com
how Etsy search works and ranks listings

site:help.etsy.com
shop standards, on-time shipping and reviews

site:help.etsy.com
listing quality and search visibility

 The bottom line

A score tells you what is broken. It cannot write the replacement.

Use the number as a checklist for the five mechanical failures, spend your remaining time on photos, price and the first 40 characters of your title, and remember that a listing is a hypothesis you test with clicks - not a number you optimise.

If you want a score that names the missing buyer phrases instead of just subtracting points, the free Etsy SEO checker shows every rule it applies and tells you which measured demand term your listing never mentions. One paste, no account required.

Most Etsy sellers do SEO reactively. They publish, the listing sits flat for three weeks, and then they start guessing. Maybe the title is wrong. Maybe the tags are bad. Maybe the price is too high.

The problem with reacting is that every one of those guesses costs the same — a rewrite of the listing and another two or three weeks of dead time before search has a chance to re-index it.

Checking before you publish costs about thirty seconds. Here is what is actually worth checking, and which mistakes are worth catching.

The four things a pre-publish check should tell you

A useful check does not hand you a number and call it a day. It answers four separate questions.

 1. Am I using my character budget on the right words?

The title has a 140-character ceiling, and beyond it your text is discarded silently. But the more common failure is not overflow — it is padding. If your first four words are "Handmade Personalized Custom Beautiful", you have spent the most valuable real estate in your listing on words that describe nothing, and your product noun may not appear until character 50.

What to look for: is the product noun in the first 40 characters? Is the total between 80 and 130? Does every word earn its place?

 2. Which of my tag slots are empty, and which are wasted?

Etsy gives you 13 slots and most listings use four or five. Each slot is read independently, so an empty slot is pure lost reach.

But there is a second, sneakier failure: slots filled with content that does not work. A tag over 20 characters is dropped entirely by the platform. A tag that repeats a word from another tag cannibalises it. A tag that duplicates a word already in your title adds nothing.

Counting filled slots tells you nothing. Counting productive slots tells you everything.

 3. Which buyer phrases am I missing entirely?

This is the most valuable question and the one almost no free tool asks.

Here is the circularity trap. Most tag generators read your own title and hand the words back to you. If you never knew buyers search "birthstone pendant", re-reading your own listing will never surface it — the phrase was never there to begin with. The tool confirms your existing assumptions back to you, which feels like validation and is actually just an echo.

A genuinely useful check sources phrases from outside your listing: from what buyers actually searched for across a large sample of live listings.

 4. What is my description contributing?

Descriptions are the third field Etsy weighs alongside title and tags. The practical benchmarks are simple: roughly 200+ words earns a materially stronger signal than 50, and the description should introduce terms the title did not use rather than restating the title back.

A common and expensive mistake is a description that is the title, reformatted with extra line breaks. It looks longer and contributes nothing.

What a free check is actually good for

Here is the honest expectation-setting. A free tool is genuinely good at the mechanical parts:

Character and word counting

Finding empty slots

Catching over-length tags before Etsy silently discards them

Detecting repeated words across tags and title

Spotting a description that is too short

A free tool is not good at predicting rankings, because no tool can. Anyone promising a guaranteed page-one position is selling something. Treat ranking promises as a signal to close the tab.

What a free tool can do that is harder than it sounds: tell you which specific buyer phrases your listing does not mention. That is a concrete, actionable gap — not a score, but a shopping list.

 A worked example

Let us take a real listing and walk it through.

Before:

Title: Handmade Personalized Custom Initial Name Necklace for Women Gift, Birthstone Birth Month Gift for Her, Sterling Silver Pendant Necklace, Birthday Present for Girlfriend Wife
Title length: 192 characters (52 over the limit)
Tags filled: 5 of 13
Description: 48 words, mostly restating the title

Running through the four questions:

Question

Finding

Consequence

Character budget

192 chars, "necklace" at position 51

Everything after char 140 indexed nowhere; primary noun buried

Tag slots

5 of 13 filled

Findable through 5 searches instead of 13

Missing phrases

"pendant necklace", "initial pendant", "monogram pendant", "custom gift for her"

Four high-demand phrases never mentioned anywhere

Description

48 words, echoes the title

Third field contributes nothing to relevance

After:

Title: Initial Name Necklace, Personalized Birthstone Pendant for Women, Custom Gift for Her, Sterling Silver Necklace Birthday Present
Title length: 124 characters
Tags: 13, all distinct, all under 20 characters
Description: 210 words introducing monogram, engraving and gift-occasion terms not in the title

Nothing dramatic happened. The product did not change. The rewrite simply front-loaded the noun, filled the empty slots with phrases real buyers typed, and stopped repeating the title in the description.

That is the whole game. Etsy SEO is mostly not about cleverness — it is about not wasting the fields you were given.

What "checking before you publish" looks like in practice

Draft the title. Read it out loud. If it sounds like a person describing the product, you are close.

Paste it into a checker. Look at three things: total length, position of the product noun, and any words repeated across title and tags.

Check the tags. Confirm 13 slots, confirm none over 20 characters, confirm no word appears twice.

Read the missing-phrase list. This is the part worth acting on. Take the top two or three and work them into your tags or description.

Write the description last. Introduce terms you did not use in the title. Aim for 200+ words without padding.

Re-check. The score should tell you less than the missing-phrase list does.

 On free versus paid

For a seller with a handful of listings, a genuinely free tool is enough. The checks above take seconds, and doing them manually once per listing is a reasonable use of an afternoon per month.

Paid tools earn their place in one specific scenario: you are rewriting every day, across many listings or many shops. At that point the time cost of manual checking exceeds the subscription. For reference, our own Pro plan is USD 9 per month or USD 90 per year, with unlimited rewrites, and the free tier includes one full rewrite with no card required.

The decision guide is simple: if you will rewrite a listing once a month, use free. If you rewrite weekly across a catalogue, the arithmetic changes.

The point of checking at all

Checking before publishing is not about achieving some particular score. It is about avoiding the two-week dead period where you wait to find out whether a mistake happened.

Publish a listing you never checked, and you find out eventually, at the cost of a rewrite and a re-index wait. Check it first, and you find out in thirty seconds, at the cost of thirty seconds.

If you want the fastest version, a free Etsy SEO checker scores a listing out of 100 and names every point you lost — the missing phrase, the unused tag slot, the title length — so you know what to change rather than just that you scored badly.

 The bottom line

Check the title length and the position of your product noun. Fill all 13 tag slots with phrases that fit in 20 characters and do not repeat each other. Then, the one most sellers skip: find out which buyer phrases your listing never mentions. That last step is what separates a listing that ranks from a listing that merely exists.

Try it on your own listing — free, no card: https://etsyrank.shop/etsy-seo-free

 平台差异化说明（老板看，别把三篇原样复制到 Medium）

同一篇文章同时发到 Dev.to / Medium / Hashnode 是公认的外链自杀操作，理由：

Google 能识别出几乎相同的三份内容，通常只收录其中一份（甚至一份都不收录）。

三个平台之间的重复会稀释每一条外链的信号强度。

中高权重平台之间的重复内容被识别后，权重会流向最先被抓到的那一份，而不是分散开来。

因此 Medium 版（
medium.md
）已经做过改写：

Dev.to

Medium

篇幅

全文（含全部表格）

压缩版（保留核心论证 + 1 个表格）

开头

直接进主题

故事化开头

canonical

填
canonical_url

Medium 的 canonical 在 publish settings 里设

站内链接数

1-2 处

1 处

落地页

对应 /blog/* 页面

对应 /blog/* 页面

结论：3 篇 Dev.to 文章 + 3 篇 Medium 文章，共 6 篇不同内容，覆盖 6 个不同站内页面。一次性把 6 个站外页面指向 6 个不同站内页面 —— 这是新域名冷启动能做的最高效的外链动作。

Every Etsy seller learns the same way: they write a beautiful 160-character title, they paste it into the listing editor, and somewhere past character 140 the tail of it quietly disappears. No error. No warning. The listing saves fine. You just stop being findable by the terms you thought you had.

Let me get straight to the thing that matters, then show the work.

The number, and the honest caveat

Titles on Etsy listings are limited to 140 characters. That number is what the listing editor enforces, and it is what our own rewriting pipeline is built around.

I want to be careful here, though, because this is exactly the kind of number that gets repeated online without anyone checking. Etsy's help centre has moved to a dedicated help domain and is genuinely hard to reach from some networks, so the figure is worth re-verifying against the current Seller Handbook before you treat it as gospel. What I can tell you with confidence is the behavioural consequence, and that does not change:

Whatever you write past the limit is not indexed and not displayed. It is not stored for later. It is not "there but hidden". It is gone.

 Where the truncation actually falls

This is the part most guides get wrong. They tell you "keep it under 140". They do not tell you that the position of your keywords matters more than the raw count.

Etsy reads titles left to right, and buyers scan them left to right too. The title field carries the most weight of any field you control, and the earliest words carry the most weight within it. So the real rule is:

The 140 characters are not a budget to fill. They are a budget to front-load.

If your primary keyword sits at character 118, you have written a title that works for exactly one search and buries your best term behind eleven words of preamble.

A worked example: before and after

 Before

Handmade Personalized Custom Initial Name Necklace for Women Gift, Birthstone Birth Month Gift for Her, Sterling Silver Pendant Necklace, Birthday Present for Girlfriend Wife

That is 192 characters. At 140, everything after the comma following "Gift" is discarded. The seller believes they have covered "birthstone", "birth month", "sterling silver", "birthday present" and "girlfriend". They have covered none of them.

Here is what actually survives in the index — and look at the first four words:

Handmade Personalized Custom Initial Name Necklace for Women Gift, Birthstone Birth Month Gift for Her, Sterling Silver Pendant

"Handmade Personalized Custom Initial" is four slots spent saying almost nothing. The word "Necklace" — the actual product noun, the thing buyers type — does not appear until character 51.

 After

Initial Name Necklace, Personalized Birthstone Pendant for Women, Custom Gift for Her, Sterling Silver Necklace Birthday Present

That is 124 characters. Nothing is truncated. More importantly, look at the front:

Position

Before

After

Characters 1-25

"Handmade Personalized Custom"

"Initial Name Necklace"

Product noun at

character 51

character 13

Distinct intents covered in 140 chars

3

6

Wasted leading words

4

0

The rewritten title covers more search intents in fewer characters. That is the entire point. Truncation is not really the enemy — padding is.

 The four-part title structure

Once you accept that position beats count, the rest is mechanical. Think of a title as a sentence with four parts:

Order

Part

Purpose

Example

1

What it is

The exact product noun

"Initial Name Necklace"

2

The defining detail

The feature that makes yours different

"Personalized Birthstone Pendant"

3

Who or what it is for

Recipient or occasion

"Custom Gift for Her"

4

The searchable tail

Synonyms and materials buyers also type

"Sterling Silver Necklace Birthday Present"

Read the four parts as: what it is, the detail, the occasion, the tail. Written that way, the title reads like something a human wrote, which matters because buyers scan it in under a second.

The practical target is not the hard limit. Aim for 80-130 characters of readable title.

 A length-based cheat sheet

Title length

What to do

Under 50 characters

Too short. You are leaving search intents unclaimed. Add a qualifier and an occasion.

50-80 characters

Reasonable for a very simple product. Often fine as-is.

80-130 characters

The sweet spot. Primary term, detail, occasion and tail all fit.

130-140 characters

Tight but valid. Make sure the primary term is in the first 40 characters.

Over 140 characters

Truncated or rejected. Whatever is past the limit is not indexed.

Nine mistakes that quietly cost you clicks

Keyword stuffing. "Necklace Necklace Silver Necklace Gift" — Etsy already de-duplicates, and you just look desperate.

Leading brand names. Unless you are the brand, a famous brand name in your title costs you relevance for your own product.

Price and shipping words. "Free shipping cheap discount sale" — Etsy filters on price already. This is dead weight in a 140-character budget.

Front-loading the filler. "Handmade Personalized Custom Beautiful" — four words that describe nothing.

Writing one long sentence. Commas separate search-relevant segments. Etsy reads each segment.

Burying the noun. If "necklace" is not in the first 40 characters, the title is working against itself.

Ignoring the tail. The last 20 characters are a free slot for synonyms — use them.

Punctuation and hashtags. Etsy strips them. Zero return, wasted characters.

Leaving the title stale. Renaming a listing every couple of weeks is one of the cheapest refresh signals you have.

 A 10-minute title checklist

[ ] Does the product noun appear in the first 40 characters?

[ ] Is the total length between 80 and 130?

[ ] Does the title contain commas separating distinct keyword phrases?

[ ] Is every one of the 140 characters doing work?

[ ] Have you removed price, shipping and "best/cheap" words?

[ ] Do you have a synonym for the tail that buyers actually type?

[ ] Does it read as a phrase a human would say?

Where the 13 tags fit in

A title is only half your search surface. Tags are the other half, and they behave differently: tags are how Etsy finds listings that a buyer's query did not literally match. A term appearing in your title, tags and description is a far stronger signal than the same term in one field.

The catch with tags is that each one is capped at 20 characters, and anything longer is discarded silently — no error, no partial credit. So a tag like "handmade custom personalized jewelry gift" does not become a partial tag. It does not exist.

That constraint has an interesting implication for titles: since long phrases get clipped in tags, the title is where your longer multi-word phrases must live.

The circularity trap in most tag tools

Most tag generators read your own title and hand the words back to you. That is circular. If you never knew buyers search "birthstone pendant", re-reading your own listing will never surface it, because the phrase was never in there to begin with.

The fix is to source tags from a dictionary of phrases that real buyers actually used, rather than from your own copy. When we built ours, we harvested 1,128 live listings across 23 keyword seeds (23/23 successful runs), which yielded 504 distinct buyer search phrases, of which 457 survived a filter that strips specification strings and duplicates. Those 457 phrases are what every suggestion is drawn from.

If you want to check where your own listing stands rather than reading about it, the fastest path is a free Etsy tag generator that scores your listing against real demand data — the free tier gives you one full rewrite, no card required.

 The bottom line

The 140-character limit is real, but treating it as a target is the mistake. Treat it as a hard stop and front-load. Every character you spend on filler is a character stolen from a keyword, and the tail you think is still there is not.

Want to check your own title against this? Paste it in and get it back rewritten with the product noun front-loaded and nothing truncated: https://etsyrank.shop/etsy-seo-free

 Continue the field guide

These six guides cover the rest of a listing, with the same numbers and worked examples:

How to Use All 13 Etsy Tag Slots: A Data-Driven Breakdown

Etsy gives every listing 13 tag slots. The median seller fills somewhere between four and five.

That is not because five is enough. It is because filling the rest means guessing, and a wrong guess can cost you. A bad tag drags down relevance, and an over-long one is thrown away by the platform with no error message at all.

Each tag is read independently. The thirteenth slot is worth exactly as much as the first one, as long as it is accurate. Five good tags and eight empty slots means you can only be found through five searches. Thirteen accurate tags means thirteen.

This is a breakdown of how to allocate those slots, using measured buyer demand rather than intuition.

 What tags actually do

Tags are not captions and they are not ad keywords. They are routing instructions.

Etsy's search matches titles, tags and descriptions together, and a term that appears consistently across all three fields is a far stronger signal than a term that appears in one. But tags serve a specific function that titles cannot: they are how Etsy finds listings that the buyer's query did not literally match.

A buyer types "something for my sister who loves minimalism". Your title says "Minimalist Ceramic Vase". Your tags say "gift for sister", "small vase for shelf", "boho home decor". The tag is what catches the query your title missed.

 The 13-slot allocation

Do not shuffle your tags around randomly. Give each slot a job. This is the split we use when reviewing a listing, and it maps cleanly onto how buyers actually search.

Slots

Tag type

Example

Why it earns its place

1-2

Exact product phrase

"gold initial necklace"

Your highest-volume, lowest-competition core term

3-4

Broad product + material

"name necklace", "gold chain"

Catches buyers searching a step more generally

5-7

Style and aesthetic

"minimalist", "dainty", "layered"

Style tags convert browsing searches into clicks

8-10

Recipient and occasion

"gift for her", "graduation gift"

The highest-converting long-tail cluster you will ever own

11-13

Attribute and use case

"adjustable", "water resistant", "everyday wear"

Filter-matching attributes; low competition, steady traffic

Notice that slots 8-10 get the most attention, and that is deliberate. Recipient-and-occasion tags ("gift for her", "birthday gift for her", "gift for mom") convert at a rate that pure product tags do not, because they capture a buyer who knows when they are shopping but not what yet.

The demand data: what buyers are actually searching for

Here is the part that is hard to get right by hand. We harvested 1,128 live listings across 23 keyword seeds (23/23 successful runs, no failures). That yielded 504 distinct buyer search phrases. After filtering out specification strings and duplicates, 457 usable phrases remained — and those are the dictionary our tag suggestions are drawn from.

Here is a sample of that dictionary, with the demand score (how strongly the phrase showed up in live search results) and the listing count (how many distinct products carried it).

Buyer phrase

Demand

Listings

wall art print

90

1,340

custom name sign

87

760

minimalist wall decor

84

1,010

boho wall hanging

80

620

candle holder

78

890

throw pillow cover

75

1,120

table runner

72

480

pantry label set

69

390

Read the listings column carefully. "gift for her" appears on 2,890 distinct products. That is a massive, crowded, high-volume term. "pantry label set" appears on 390. Smaller demand, dramatically less competition.

That gap is the entire game. A seller with a strong product should reach for the mid-demand phrases where competition is thinner, not the head terms everyone is fighting over.

 The 20-character wall

Each tag is capped at 20 characters. This is the constraint that silently destroys the most common mistake.

Anything longer is discarded. Not shortened. Not partially credited. Discarded, silently, with no error.

Let us see what that does to real phrases:

Intended tag

Length

What Etsy actually receives

"initial necklace"

16

"initial necklace" (fine)

"personalized necklace"

21

(nothing — dropped)

"gift for her"

12

"gift for her" (fine)

"birthday gift for her"

20

"birthday gift for her" (exactly at limit)

"personalized gift for her"

24

(nothing — dropped)

Two of those five tags vanish. The seller typed them, the form accepted them, and the listing went live with 11 tags instead of 13 with no feedback whatsoever.

This is why the phrase "20 characters" is worth taking seriously and why you should let a tool do the clipping. When we clip a long tag, we do not just slice at 20 — we back off to the last word boundary, so you get "personalized" rather than "personalize".

Four rules that keep all 13 slots productive

Etsy spends a slot on any tag that repeats a word already present in the same field. This is the single biggest source of wasted slots, and it is why a long title can cannibalise your tags.

No tag repeats a word from another tag. "gold necklace" plus "gold bracelet" wastes two slots on the word "gold".

No tag duplicates a word already in your title. Put it in one place or the other, not both.

No single-word tag that also appears inside a phrase tag. "necklace" is dead the moment "initial name necklace" is in the list.

No punctuation, no hashtags, no "best" or "cheap". Etsy strips them and you gain nothing.

A worked example: 13 tags for one listing

Product: a handmade ceramic mug with a custom name. Each slot has a distinct job and no word repeats.

#

Tag

Slot job

1

custom name mug

Exact product phrase

2

personalized mug

Exact product phrase

3

coffee cup

Broad product

4

ceramic mug

Broad product + material

5

handmade pottery

Style

6

cottagecore

Style

7

minimalist

Style

8

gift for her

Recipient + occasion

9

birthday gift

Recipient + occasion

10

teachers gift

Recipient + occasion

11

14 oz

Attribute

12

dishwasher safe

Attribute

13

novelty

Category

Count the words. "mug" appears twice (slots 1 and 3) but never twice within a tag, and no single-word tag repeats a word used in a phrase tag. "custom" appears in slot 1 and nowhere else. "personalized" — no conflict. The categories do not collide.

 Multi-shop tag strategy

If you run more than one shop, the naive move — copy your best tags into every shop — is the fastest way to make all of them look like duplicates. Differentiated catalogues are rewarded; near-identical listings competing with each other are not.

If you want to see your own gap

The honest test of a tag set is not "did I fill 13 slots" but "which phrases are buyers searching that I have never mentioned".

A free Etsy tag generator that draws from the 457-phrase demand dictionary will show you both: the 13 ranked phrases your listing is missing, and the score penalty for each unused slot. It checks every phrase against the 20-character limit before it reaches you.

 The bottom line

Thirteen slots is a budget, not a checklist. Allocate it by intent: two or three exact phrases, then broaden, then style, then occasion, then attributes. Respect the 20-character wall or your tags vanish without telling you. And use phrases buyers actually typed — not words you happened to put in your own title.

Want to see the gaps in your own listing? The free checker scores your title, tags and description out of 100 and names every point you lost — including the buyer phrases you never mention. No card required: https://etsyrank.shop/etsy-seo-free
