How AWS Powers the Internet and What Happened When It Went Down

This week reminded us just how connected our digital world really is.

For a few hours, parts of the internet went quiet, websites slowed down, streaming platforms froze, and even smart devices acted up.

The reason? Amazon Web Services (AWS) — the backbone for a huge part of the internet experienced a major outage.

And in that silence, we saw one clear truth:

The cloud isn’t just “important” anymore, it’s essential to how the world runs.

The Ever-Growing Importance of the Cloud

From entertainment to finance to AI, the cloud powers almost everything we touch online.

Instead of owning physical servers, companies rent computing power, databases, and storage from providers like AWS.

That’s how startups scale quickly, global apps handle millions of users, and new ideas come to life faster than ever before.

The cloud gives:

Scalability: Apps can handle millions of users seamlessly.

Speed: Developers can deploy features globally in minutes.

Affordability: Teams only pay for what they use.

Reliability: Normally, outages are rare and fixed quickly.

But when something goes wrong, like this week — the ripple effects are massive.

 What Happened This Week

Around October 20–21, 2025, AWS faced a major disruption that affected thousands of apps and websites worldwide.

The issue started in the US-East-1 region, one of AWS’s busiest hubs. It was reportedly linked to a DNS failure, which caused services to lose access to each other.

Suddenly, millions of users couldn’t use their favorite apps.

Some of the platforms affected included:

Netflix – struggled with video streaming since it hosts much of its backend on AWS.

Slack – team chats and file uploads slowed or failed.

Twitch – streams buffered endlessly because AWS powers its global content delivery.

Spotify – some users couldn’t log in, as their authentication service depends on AWS databases.

Amazon’s own services – like Ring and Alexa also went offline briefly.

 African Apps Felt It Too

The effects of AWS outages don’t stop at Silicon Valley, they ripple across Africa too.

Many of the continent’s top tech companies rely heavily on AWS infrastructure for everything from payments to data analytics.

For instance:

Flutterwave uses AWS to handle millions of secure payment transactions daily across multiple African countries.

Paystack depends on AWS for uptime, scalability, and secure API calls used by thousands of merchants.

Kuda Bank relies on AWS for reliable customer account management and cloud-based transaction processing.

Andela and PiggyVest leverage AWS for data storage, analytics, and global-scale web operations.

So, even though these services may seem local, the cloud they’re built on is global.

When AWS sneezes, developers in Lagos, Japan, Nairobi, Australia and Cape Town can catch the cold too.

What AWS Actually Does for These Apps

You might be wondering how much AWS does for these apps, well most people don’t realize just how deeply integrated AWS is into everyday platforms.

Here’s a peek at what AWS provides for these companies:

App

What AWS Does

AWS Services Commonly Used

Netflix

Stores, processes, and delivers video content worldwide.

S3 (storage), EC2 (compute), CloudFront (CDN), Lambda

Spotify

Handles music streaming, recommendations, and user data.

EC2, DynamoDB, S3, SageMaker

Twitch

Powers real-time streaming and chat.

IVS (Interactive Video Service), CloudFront, EC2

Slack

Manages messaging queues and file uploads.

S3, EC2, Elastic Load Balancer, RDS

Flutterwave / Paystack

Secure online payments and API integrations.

EC2, Lambda, RDS, CloudTrail, KMS

Kuda Bank

Cloud-based banking, fraud monitoring, and data security.

EC2, DynamoDB, CloudWatch, IAM

So when AWS’s core services go down, even briefly, apps that depend on them lose access to critical functions — databases, authentication, file storage, or live updates.

It’s not that those apps “crashed” — it’s that their digital foundation temporarily disappeared.

What We Can Learn from It

The outage didn’t just highlight AWS’s dominance, it also taught important lessons for developers and businesses:

Build with redundancy: Use multiple regions or even hybrid clouds for critical features.

Plan for failure: Design apps that can gracefully handle downtime or degraded performance.

Know your dependencies: Many apps didn’t even realize which AWS services they were relying on until things broke.

Communicate early: Transparency keeps users patient and builds trust.

Even AWS itself emphasizes resilience yet, this week showed that in tech, perfection doesn’t exist.

 Why AWS Still Matters

Despite the outage, AWS remains the world’s most trusted cloud provider, serving millions of businesses, from startups to giants like Netflix, NASA, Flutterwave, and Airbnb.

Its reliability rate is still over 99.99%, and each outage drives improvements that make the entire ecosystem stronger.

More than that, AWS represents what’s possible in the digital era:

You can get a virtual server up in seconds, launch a global website in hours, and analyze petabytes of data without owning a single piece of hardware.

That’s not just convenience, it’s freedom to innovate and in an ever-growing tech world, such convenience is of great importance.

When AWS went down, it wasn’t just “some company’s problem.”

It was a glimpse of how deeply the cloud underpins our lives, from the music we stream to the devices in our homes, and even the fintech apps we rely on in Africa.

The outage reminded us of something powerful:

The cloud isn’t invisible anymore. It’s the nervous system of the internet.

And as AWS continues to evolve, it’s shaping not just how apps run but how the world runs.

What’s one app that's part of your daily life that was affected?

Let’s talk about it in the comments.

SEND Africa: Building a Web3 Solution for Seamless Peer-to-Peer USDC Transfers

/Faisal_the1st
Sending money across borders shouldn’t feel like navigating an obstacle course of high fees, delays, and outdated systems. Unfortunately, for many individuals and businesses—especially in underbanked regions, traditional financial barriers still persist.

SEND Africa is stepping up to solve this challenge through a decentralized, peer-to-peer (P2P) platform powered by USDC, offering a practical Web3 solution for real-world financial inclusion.

In this post, I’ll explore how SEND Africa works, why USDC is the stablecoin of choice, and how developers can engage with and build on top of decentralized solutions like this.

Why SEND Africa? Addressing Real-World Problems

In Africa and other emerging markets, financial systems struggle with:

High remittance fees from intermediaries.

Slow settlements taking days or more.

Limited banking access for unbanked individuals.

Currency volatility that erodes the value of savings and transactions.

By leveraging blockchain technology and stablecoins, SEND Africa eliminates these inefficiencies while empowering freelancers, small businesses, and families to transact seamlessly—globally.

How It Works: SEND Africa in Action

At its core, SEND Africa integrates Web3 tools to allow users to send and receive USDC (USD Coin) via peer-to-peer transfers. Here’s a simplified breakdown:

 1. USDC as the Currency

USDC, a stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the US dollar, ensures transaction value remains stable—no volatility like traditional cryptocurrencies.

 2. Decentralized P2P Network

SEND Africa eliminates intermediaries by enabling direct wallet-to-wallet transfers. This ensures instant settlements, transparency, and low fees.

 3. Developer-Friendly Blockchain Infrastructure

While SEND Africa focuses on user simplicity, it is built on Ethereum, a developer-compatible blockchain enabling:

Fast finality (low latency for transaction confirmation).

Low gas fees (cost-effective for micropayments).

Wallet interoperability (support for wallets like MetaMask, Phantom, or Trust Wallet).

 4. Simple Wallet Setup

Users can easily onboard by connecting an existing crypto wallet or creating a new one. Once set up, sending USDC is as simple as sharing a wallet address.

Why USDC? The Developer and User Advantage

In today’s rapidly evolving tech landscape, innovation is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. Companies and individuals alike must embrace change to remain relevant, and at the heart of this transformation is Amazon Web Services (AWS). With its vast array of services, AWS has become a cornerstone of modern technology, enabling breakthroughs across industries. In this blog post, we’ll explore how AWS is not just a tool but a driver of innovation, revolutionizing the way we think, build, and innovate.

The AWS Ecosystem: A Foundation for Progress

Like earlier stated in previous blogs, AWS launched in 2006 as a cloud computing service, but over the years, it has evolved into a sprawling ecosystem. It now provides over 200 fully featured services, ranging from compute power and storage to machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT), and even quantum computing. Its global reach spans 31 geographic regions, enabling businesses from startups to multinational corporations to access resources on-demand.

This vast ecosystem is pivotal for fostering innovation. Why? Because it removes traditional barriers to entry, such as high upfront costs for hardware and infrastructure. Instead of investing in physical servers, companies can launch scalable applications in minutes, with AWS managing the underlying complexities.

Scalability: Turning Big Ideas into Reality

One of AWS’s most profound impacts is in how it handles scalability. Whether you're a small startup, a tech giant or just trying out its services, AWS enables you to scale your applications seamlessly. This has been critical for companies launching disruptive technologies:

Startups: Imagine a two-person team launching the next big social platform. Thanks to AWS’s pay-as-you-go model and auto-scaling capabilities, they can handle unpredictable traffic spikes without investing in expensive infrastructure.

Enterprises: Large companies like Netflix use AWS to stream content to millions of viewers simultaneously, leveraging services such as Amazon EC2 for compute and Amazon S3 for storage.

Scalability means that anyone with an idea can test it, iterate on it, and deliver it globally—all without being limited by infrastructure constraints.

AI and Machine Learning: Powering Smarter Solutions

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are no longer the technologies of tomorrow—they’re here today. AWS makes them accessible through services like:

Amazon SageMaker: A platform for building, training, and deploying ML models.

AWS DeepRacer: A fun, gamified approach to learning reinforcement learning.

Amazon Polly: A service that turns text into lifelike speech.

These tools empower developers, researchers, and even non-technical teams to harness the power of AI. For example, healthcare organizations use AWS ML services to analyze patient data for better diagnostics, while e-commerce companies create personalized shopping experiences using recommendation algorithms.

AWS doesn’t just provide the tools; it fosters a culture of experimentation, where businesses can pilot ideas with minimal risk.

IoT and Edge Computing: Connecting the World

In the advancing tech world, connectivity is key, and AWS leads the charge with its IoT and edge computing services. With offerings like AWS IoT Core and AWS Greengrass, companies can connect billions of devices securely.

Consider the automotive industry:

Automakers are integrating AWS IoT services to enable real-time vehicle diagnostics and over-the-air updates.

Smart cities are deploying IoT solutions for better traffic management, energy efficiency, and public safety.

By pushing compute capabilities closer to where data is generated, AWS is enabling faster, more efficient solutions.

 Serverless Computing: Innovation Without Limits

For developers, the concept of serverless computing has been a game-changer, and AWS Lambda is at the forefront of this revolution. Serverless allows developers to focus purely on building applications, leaving AWS to manage the servers.

This approach reduces operational overhead, shortens development cycles, and encourages experimentation. A great example is fintech startups, which use AWS Lambda to process millions of transactions per second without worrying about backend infrastructure.

Security and Compliance: Building Trust in Innovation

Innovation thrives in an environment of trust, and AWS has made significant strides in ensuring the security of its services. With over 100 compliance certifications and robust encryption features, AWS is trusted by industries like finance, healthcare, and government.

This robust security posture enables companies to innovate without fear, knowing that sensitive data and operations are protected.

 Global Reach: Democratizing Innovation

AWS’s global infrastructure means that resources are available to anyone, anywhere. This democratization of technology has enabled innovation to flourish in regions that were previously underserved. For example:

Africa: AWS’s cloud presence has empowered local startups to compete on the global stage.

Rural Areas: AWS’s cloud services have bridged gaps in healthcare and education through telemedicine platforms and remote learning tools.

By breaking down geographic and economic barriers, AWS ensures that innovation isn’t confined to Silicon Valley.

 Industries Transformed by AWS

AWS’s impact is not limited to tech companies. It’s reshaping industries across the board:

Healthcare: Organizations are using AWS to accelerate drug discovery, enhance telemedicine, and manage patient data securely.

Entertainment: Studios leverage AWS for rendering CGI and streaming content. And even, content delivery. An example is Netflix who uses Amazon's S3 to store it's vast amount of data and also uses AWS for content delivery.

Education: Online learning platforms rely on AWS to deliver interactive, scalable content globally.

The Future: AWS and Emerging Technologies

As we look to the future, AWS continues to push boundaries. Its investments in quantum computing (via Amazon Braket), sustainability (through renewable energy initiatives), and hybrid cloud solutions (with AWS Outposts) position it as a leader in driving technological progress.

 Conclusion

AWS isn’t just a tool; it’s a catalyst for innovation. By providing a robust, scalable, and secure platform, AWS empowers individuals and organizations to dream big and achieve more. In the advancing tech world, where change is constant and competition fierce, AWS stands out as a partner in progress, helping turn YOUR ideas into reality.

About a year ago, I wrote this post to enlighten us on how AWS helps in the handling of big data and now, it's safe to say a lot has happened in a year😂. This post now includes the latest AWS tools, examples, and AI integrations for the 5 Vs of Big Data.

Big data keeps getting bigger and faster.

From social media streams to AI models and IoT sensors, organizations now deal with lots of information every second.

To make sense of all that, you need more than storage — you need speed, trust, flexibility, and insight.

That’s where Amazon Web Services (AWS) comes in.

Let’s see how AWS tackles the 5 classic challenges of big data — the 5 Vs: Volume, Velocity, Variety, Veracity, and Value.

 1. Volume — Handling Massive Amounts of Data

Today’s businesses handle terabytes, hell even petabytes of data. AWS helps manage that scale with storage that grows as you do.

 AWS tools that help

Amazon S3 – The go-to cloud storage for just about anything, now with S3 Express One Zone for even faster access.

Amazon Redshift Serverless – A powerful data warehouse that automatically scales when workloads change.

AWS Snowball – A physical device that helps move large amounts of on-premises data to the cloud.

 Real-world example

Disney+ uses S3 and Redshift to store and analyze massive viewer data — helping them recommend what you’ll love watching next.

 2. Velocity — Making Data Move Fast

In finance, gaming, or e-commerce, waiting hours for reports isn’t an option. Data needs to move and be analyzed instantly.

 AWS tools that help

Amazon Kinesis – Streams and processes real-time data from apps, sensors, or websites.

AWS Lambda (with SnapStart) – Runs code automatically in response to events, no servers required.

Amazon MSK (Managed Streaming for Kafka) – For high-throughput data streaming with low latency.

 Real-world example

Flutterwave, a fintech company based in Africa, uses Kinesis to detect and stop suspicious transactions within seconds.

 3. Variety — Handling Different Types of Data

Data doesn’t always come in neat tables. It can be videos, tweets, spreadsheets, or even IoT readings. AWS lets you handle them all under one roof.

 AWS tools that help

Amazon RDS & Aurora – For structured, relational data.

DynamoDB – A NoSQL database for semi-structured data like JSON.

Amazon S3 – Perfect for storing unstructured files like images, logs, or videos.

AWS Glue – Cleans and combines data from different sources.

 Real-world example

An online store might use RDS for products, DynamoDB for user sessions, and S3 for images, with all these working together behind the scenes, efficiency is greatly increased.

 4. Veracity — Keeping Data Clean and Trustworthy

Good insights come from good data. AWS helps ensure your data is accurate, secure, and compliant.

 AWS tools that help

AWS Glue DataBrew – Cleans and preps messy data visually.

Amazon Macie – Uses AI to find and protect sensitive information.

AWS Lake Formation – Manages secure, well-governed data lakes.

AWS Clean Rooms – Lets companies share and analyze data safely without revealing personal details.

 Real-world example

Philips HealthSuite uses AWS tools to keep healthcare data private and compliant with global standards.

 5. Value — Turning Data Into Decisions

The goal of all this data? Insights that actually matter. AWS helps you turn raw information into smart decisions and predictions.

 AWS tools that help

Amazon SageMaker – Builds and trains machine learning models.

Amazon QuickSight – Creates interactive dashboards and visuals.

Amazon Q – An AI assistant that helps you explore data using natural language.

Amazon Athena – Lets you query data right from S3, no setup needed.

 Real-world example

A logistics company uses SageMaker to predict delivery delays and QuickSight to track performance — saving both time and fuel.

 The AI Connection

In 2025, big data and AI go hand in hand.

AWS services like Bedrock, SageMaker, and Amazon Q let teams use data to power generative AI, smarter predictions, and automation — all without needing deep ML expertise.

Big data isn’t slowing down, but AWS makes it manageable, meaningful, and even exciting.

Whether you’re a growing startup or a data scientist in training, AWS gives you the tools to store, process, and understand your data with ease.

The future of big data lies at the intersection of AI, scalability, and sustainability and AWS is already there.

What’s your biggest data challenge in 2025? Let’s talk about it below!

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a global leader in cloud computing, offering a highly reliable, scalable, and secure infrastructure. One of the cornerstones of AWS’s architecture is its globally distributed network of regions and availability zones (AZs). Understanding these concepts is vital for anyone leveraging AWS for business, development, or personal projects.

What Are AWS Regions?

An AWS region is a geographically distinct location where AWS provides its services. Each region contains multiple data centers (like I said in the previous blog, some as big as football fields!!) and serves as an independent cluster of infrastructure. AWS regions are designed to meet data sovereignty, compliance, and latency requirements.

 Key Features of AWS Regions:

Global Reach:
AWS currently operates in numerous regions around the world, with new ones being launched frequently. This ensures users can deploy their applications closer to their end-users. One was made in Africa not too long ago, in South Africa.

Independent Operation:
Regions are isolated from one another to provide maximum fault tolerance and stability.

Data Residency Compliance:
Some organizations or industries require that data remain within certain geographical boundaries. AWS regions help meet these regulatory requirements.

Examples of popular AWS regions include:

us-east-1 (N. Virginia): One of the oldest and most widely used regions.

eu-west-1 (Ireland): Common for European customers.

ap-southeast-1 (Singapore): A preferred region for businesses in Southeast Asia.

 What Are Availability Zones (AZs)?

An AWS availability zone is a physically distinct and independent data center within a region. A region typically contains multiple AZs connected by high-speed, low-latency networking.

 Key Features of AZs:

Fault Tolerance:
Each AZ is isolated from the others, reducing the impact of failures. If one AZ experiences an outage, workloads in other AZs remain unaffected.

Redundancy:
AZs within a region are interconnected, allowing businesses to replicate data and services for high availability.

Scalability:
Applications can be designed to scale across multiple AZs to balance load and ensure performance.

For example, the us-west-1 region (N. California) has two AZs, while newer regions like ap-southeast-3 (Jakarta) might have three or more AZs.

Feature

AWS Region

AWS Availability Zone

Scope

Geographical area

Data center within a region

Independence

Isolated from other regions

Isolated but interconnected within a region

Purpose

Serve local customers, meet compliance

Provide fault tolerance and scalability

Example

us-east-1 (N. Virginia)

us-east-1a, us-east-1b

 Other Key AWS Concepts

Local Zones

AWS Local Zones are extensions of an AWS region, offering compute, storage, and database services closer to major cities for ultra-low latency. These are ideal for applications like video editing, gaming, and real-time data processing.

Wavelength Zones

AWS Wavelength Zones integrate AWS services with telecommunications providers’ 5G networks. They are designed to deliver ultra-low latency for mobile applications.

AWS Outposts

AWS Outposts allow customers to run AWS infrastructure and services on-premises. This is especially useful for industries with stringent latency or data residency requirements.

Best Practices for Using AWS Regions and AZs

Architect for High Availability: Always deploy workloads across multiple AZs to prevent disruptions due to hardware failures or outages.

Choose the Right Region: Consider factors like latency, cost, and compliance when selecting a region. Some services may also be available only in specific regions. For example, deploying a software to us-east-1 when its users are mostly in Africa isn’t ideal, deploying to af-south-1is the more efficient way.

Data Replication: Use services like Amazon S3 Cross-Region Replication to ensure data durability and disaster recovery.

Monitoring: Leverage tools like Amazon CloudWatch to monitor workloads and performance across regions and AZs.

 Final Thoughts

AWS’s global network of regions and availability zones is a testament to its commitment to delivering highly available and reliable cloud services. By strategically selecting and utilizing regions and AZs, businesses can optimize performance, meet compliance requirements, reduce latency and build resilient architectures.

Whether you’re building a small application or a mission-critical enterprise solution, understanding AWS’s regional and zonal architecture is key to unlocking the full potential of the cloud.

In today’s tech-savvy world, you’ve probably heard about “the cloud” so many times. It’s the place where your photos, emails, and even Netflix shows seem to magically reside. But what exactly is cloud computing? And why do companies like Amazon Web Services (AWS) dominate the conversation? Let me take you on this journey as i break it down for you guys.

 What is Cloud Computing?

Imagine if, instead of buying a car, you could rent one whenever you needed it. You wouldn’t have to worry about maintenance, or hefty upfront costs. That’s basically what cloud computing is, but for computing resources like storage, servers, and databases.

Rather than setting up your own bulky hardware or servers, you use someone else’s usually a company with massive data centers, some as big as football fields. You pay for what you use, when you use it. No mess, no stress.

Why Is Cloud Computing a Big Deal?

Cost-Efficiency: No upfront investments in hardware. You just pay for the resources you need.

Scalability: Need more power during a holiday sale or a viral TikTok moment? The cloud scales up (or down) instantly.

Accessibility: Whether you're in New York or New Delhi, you can access your cloud services anywhere there's internet.

AWS: The King of the Cloud

If cloud computing were a party, AWS would be the life of it. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a cloud computing platform launched by Amazon in 2006. It’s grown to be the industry leader, powering startups, enterprises, and even government agencies.

Why is AWS so loved and Used?

AWS offers more than 200 fully-featured services for just about anything you can imagine. From hosting websites to running complex AI models, AWS has a solution. It’s like a Swiss Army knife for tech. Extremely versatile.

A Look at Some Cool AWS Services

Here’s where AWS really shines, it doesn’t just offer basic cloud storage or servers. Its services are designed to fit diverse needs, or you could say all our needs. Let’s explore a few:

 1. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud)

Think of EC2 as a virtual computer. Need a server for your website or app? Just spin up an EC2 instance. It’s powerful, flexible, and you only pay for the time it runs. And also, it can scale automatically!!

Why It’s Cool: You are literally renting a supercomputer without the super price tag!!

 2. Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service)

Imagine a bottomless bucket where you can throw all your files, images, videos, documents, you name it. That’s S3. It’s secure, reliable, and can handle data at a scale you can’t even imagine.

Real-Life Use Case: Netflix uses S3 to store its movies and shows. Yes, every episode of Stranger Things might be sitting on an S3 bucket somewhere.

Airbnb also uses Amazon S3 to store images, backups, and static content associated with property listings. The platform benefits from S3’s durability and ability to handle large-scale data storage needs.

 3. AWS Lambda

AWS Lambda is a game-changer for developers. It lets you run code without worrying about servers. Just upload your function, and Lambda takes care of the rest.

Why It’s Awesome: It’s “serverless,” meaning you don’t need to manage infrastructure. Plus, you only pay when your code runs.

 4. Amazon RDS (Relational Database Service)

Need a database for your app but don’t want the headache of managing it? RDS handles that for you. It supports multiple database engines, including MySQL and PostgreSQL.

Perfect For: E-commerce platforms or apps needing fast and reliable data storage.

It’s also a good tool for data analysts and scientists.

 5. Amazon Rekognition

AWS has cool AI and machine learning tools, too. Rekognition is an image and video analysis service. It can identify objects, people, and even emotions in photos or videos.

Fun Fact: Companies use Rekognition for tasks like facial recognition or filtering explicit content.

Why Should You Care About AWS?

AWS isn’t just for big companies like Spotify or NASA. It’s also for you. Whether you’re a budding developer, a startup founder, or like me, just someone curious about tech, AWS can help you build, scale, and experiment with ease.

Here’s why it’s worth diving into:

Learning Opportunities: AWS offers free training, certifications, and even a free tier to get started.

Career Growth: Cloud skills are in demand. Knowing AWS can give your resume a serious boost.

Innovation Playground: With services like AI/ML, IoT, and blockchain, you can experiment with cutting-edge tech.

 Final Thoughts

Cloud computing has revolutionized how we think about technology, and AWS is leading the charge. It’s not just a tool for big corporations—it’s a platform that empowers everyone to innovate without limits.

So, the next time someone throws around terms like "cloud," "serverless," or "S3 buckets," you can smile knowingly. You’re no longer just a cloud newbie; you’re on your way to becoming a cloud expert.

Ready to explore the cloud? AWS is waiting for you. Dive in, experiment, and see what you can build!
