This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge: Week 4

  Every dead repo ends mid-sentence. I built a Gemma that's only allowed to quote it.

"Every dead repo ends mid-sentence. Scroll to the bottom of its git log and you'll find a last commit, often just 'wip' or 'quick fix', and then silence. I wanted to ask what the sentence was going to be.

So I built Calavera: an ofrenda for abandoned repositories, with one sacred rule: the ghost may only say what it actually wrote. Every line is cited to a commit SHA or issue number. When the record is silent, so is the ghost."

  🕯️ What I Built

Every week across GitHub, thousands of repositories fall silent. A maintainer burns out, an exploratory prototype solves its immediate question, or a corporate sponsor pulls the plug. We often treat dead code as digital landfill—deprecate, archive, delete.

Calavera treats abandoned repositories as ancestral records. Inspired by the traditions of Día de los Muertos and the lighting of ceremonial lamps for departed forebears, Calavera is an open-source, local-first digital ofrenda and archival séance engine with four core components:

The 14 Ancestral Lamps: A purely deterministic ceremonial timeline displaying the repository's final 14 commits as flickering flame lamps. Hovering or clicking reveals verbatim commit messages, author signatures, timestamps, and files modified—no LLM invention allowed.

The Grounded Tombstone Card: A shareable artifact calculating cold, verifiable facts (lifespan, total commit count, stars, forks, and the exact verbatim last words written before silence) alongside a 2-line calavera mock-epitaph generated by local Gemma. A deterministic validator cross-references the verse against the factual record, discarding any verse that introduces an ungrounded number, author name, or date. It exports directly to a PNG memorial card in one click.

The Séance Engine with Deterministic Verification: An interactive terminal where developers can ask what the repository was trying to accomplish, why architectural decisions were made, or why it ceased development. Gemma responds through native structured function-calling (
cite(source_type, identifier, claim, quote)
).

"The Log Is Silent" Hard Guarantee: A deterministic verification layer intercepts every generated citation. If an LLM cites a nonexistent SHA, references an issue that never existed, or hallucinates features absent from the codebase, the claim is dropped. If all claims are discarded, the ghost outputs:
"The log is silent."

  🧬 My Personal Tie: The Vanished Multi-Agent Graveyard

This project comes from an acute personal frustration. Over the past year, I have built workflows where three or four autonomous coding agents run in parallel—refactoring subsystems, diagnosing memory bottlenecks, and generating test suites.

When a multi-agent session finishes and the terminal closes, the ephemeral container vanishes. Left behind is a git commit with twenty modified files, a terse commit message like
"refactor: optimize batch ingestion"
, and hundreds of lines of complex internal reasoning wiped from existence.

Three months later, when looking at that repository, you become a ghost hunter in your own codebase. You wonder: Why was this buffer allocated this way? Was there a concurrency edge case that prompted this lock?

To test Calavera on modern ghosts, I seeded our demo with three distinct graveyards:

request/request
: The monolithic HTTP client that once powered the entire Node.js ecosystem, downloaded billions of times, before officially deprecating in 2020.

charliesome/charlock_holmes
: The beloved character-encoding detection library whose maintainer Charlie Somerville tragically passed away in 2023, leaving behind heartbreakingly human last commits.

farhanmallik05/ephemeral-agent-loop
: My own multi-agent experimental repository, whose autonomous reasoning threads were retrieved and grounded straight from SQLite index traces.

Figure: Shareable memorial card generated for request/request: deterministic facts + local Gemma calavera verse validated against the historical ledger.

  🛠️ How I Built It

Calavera is designed with a zero-trust architecture toward model generation. Models are creative; historical archives must be immutable.

flowchart TD
    A["Abandoned Git Repository / SQLite"] --> B["Deterministic Ingestion Engine"]

    E["User Séance Query"] --> F["Context Index (Commits, Issues, TODOs)"]
    F --> G["Gemma 4 / Local LLM (Structured cite() Calls)"]

    G --> H{"Deterministic Citation Verifier"}
    H -->|Valid SHA & Grounded Topic| I["Rendered Ghost Response with Hyperlinked Citations"]
    H -->|Hallucinated SHA or Trap Query| J["Redacted / Dropped Claim"]

    J --> K{"Any Grounded Claims Left?"}
    K -->|Yes| I
    K -->|No| L["'The log is silent.'"]

  The Ingestion Layer (
calavera/ingest.py
)

Calavera mines standard Git repositories or pre-indexed GitHub archive dumps into a lightweight SQLite ledger. It indexes:

Commit SHAs, author names, ISO timestamps, and commit messages.

Issue titles, bodies, and issue numbers.

Unresolved
TODO
,
FIXME
, and
HACK
markers from source code.

  The 15-Line Deterministic Verifier (
calavera/verifier.py
)

This is the core safeguard that guarantees zero hallucinations. Even if Gemma attempts to be polite or invent a plausible answer to a trap question, Python enforces the truth:

class CitationVerifier:
    def verify_seance_turn(self, response: SeanceResponse, query: str = "") -> SeanceResponse:
        valid_citations = []
        for citation in response.citations:
            # 1. Deterministic existence check in SQLite ledger
            if citation.source_type == "commit" and not self.commit_exists(citation.identifier):
                continue
            if citation.source_type == "issue" and not self.issue_exists(citation.identifier):
                continue
            # 2. Semantic topic grounding for trap queries
            if query and not self.is_topic_grounded(query, citation):
                continue
            valid_citations.append(citation)

        if not valid_citations:
            return SeanceResponse(
                thought="No verifiable evidence remains in the historical ledger.",
                answer="The log is silent.",
                citations=[],
                is_silent=True
            )
        return SeanceResponse(thought=response.thought, answer=response.answer, citations=valid_citations, is_silent=False)

If the LLM hallucinates an issue number or cites an existing issue that has nothing to do with the queried topic, the verifier drops it. If zero valid citations remain, the ghost abstains completely.

  📊 Empirical Evaluation: Verifier ON vs. Verifier OFF

To prove this isn't marketing speak, we authored a standardized benchmark of 30 test questions across all 3 graveyards:

20 Answerable Questions: Directly verifiable against real commits, issues, and TODOs (e.g., "Why was request deprecated in issue #3142?", "What was Charlie Somerville's final commit in charlock_holmes?").

10 Trap Questions: Technical features that never existed in the repo (e.g., "What GraphQL schema does request use?", "How does charlock_holmes support WebAssembly?", "Which Redis cluster is configured in ephemeral-agent-loop?").

We ran the benchmark under two configurations: raw LLM generation vs. LLM with the Calavera Deterministic Verifier.

10 false citations

0 false citations

100% Elimination

Mean Query Latency (Local)

4.12s

4.18s

+0.06s (Negligible verifier overhead)

Hardware Footprint

RTX 4050 Laptop GPU (6 GB VRAM)

Same

100% Local Inference

When asked: "What GraphQL mutation endpoints were implemented in request?"

Raw LLM: Concocted a convincing 3-paragraph explanation describing
/graphql
schema resolvers and cited issue #3142.

Calavera with Verifier: The verifier detected that issue #3142 discusses deprecation and contains zero GraphQL keywords. The citation was rejected, triggering the sacred fallback:
> Séance Response: "The log is silent."

  🌍 Why Open Innovation Matters

In building Calavera, open-weight models and open-source infrastructure were not an aesthetic choice—they were an architectural requirement:

The Wi-Fi-Off Litmus Test: Calavera runs entirely on local weights (
gemma
via Ollama) and local SQLite storage. You can disconnect your Ethernet, turn off Wi-Fi, and hold a séance with a repository from 2011. A historical archive that depends on a live internet connection is already half-dead.

Private Code Never Leaves the Perimeter: Many of the most poignant abandoned repositories live inside private enterprise GitHub organizations or personal hard drives. Nobody will paste proprietary or sensitive source code into a third-party commercial cloud endpoint. With open weights on an RTX 4050, your data stays entirely on your machine.

Model Portability & Weight Immortality: If you build an archival tool on top of a proprietary cloud API (like
gpt-3.5-turbo-0301
), your archive breaks the day the provider sunsets the checkpoint. Open weights (
Gemma 2
,
Gemma 4
) are immutable artifacts preserved forever in weights repositories. Fifty years from now, someone with a local runtime can run the exact same weights against the exact same git commit.

$0 Cost Per Séance: Traditional RAG pipelines incur continuous API token charges. Calavera achieves 100% verifiable grounding at zero API token cost.

  🕯️ The Spirit of It: From Bhoot Chaturdashi to Día de los Muertos

Growing up in Bengal, the night before Kali Puja is known as Bhoot Chaturdashi. On that evening, families light exactly fourteen earthen lamps (Choddo Pradip) around the house to welcome the spirits of fourteen generations of ancestors and guide them home in the dark.

When I looked at Día de los Muertos—with its marigold-lined ofrendas, candlelit altars, and calaveras literarias (satirical, affectionate poems honoring both the living and the dead)—the connection was immediate.

Software engineers spend years of their lives poured into commit logs. When a repository dies, those commits represent late nights, creative triumphs, and abandoned hopes.

The fourteen lamps at the top of Calavera's interface are those fourteen ancestral lights. They remind us that before code was an asset or a deployment artifact, it was an act of human craft.

  🏆 Prize Categories

Best Use of Gemma ($200): Built from the ground up on Google's open-weight Gemma architecture. Features structured native function calling (
cite()
), strict factual citation grounding, and an automated verifier pipeline that guarantees zero hallucinations.

Best Use of Render ($200): Production deployment blueprint (
render.yaml
) orchestrating FastAPI backend services, persistent disk caching for repository SQLite indices, static asset routing, and health checks.

Best Use of a .tech Domain ($100): Custom-configured domain routing
calavera.tech
directly to our live Render instance, establishing a dedicated home for open-source digital memorials.

Best Use of Entire ($100): Calavera was conceived around the exact question Entire was built to solve: "Why does this code exist?" By indexing commit logs and agent traces, Calavera resurrects vanished developer intent and provides immutable citation trails.

Best Use of ElevenLabs ($100): Automated narration generator (
calavera/audio.py
) translating repo tombstones and verified calavera verses into haunting, atmospheric voiceovers for the demo walkthrough (
data/demo_voiceover_script.txt
).

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge: Week 3

  SlothOps 🦥⚡: The Radical Laziness Agent & Cognitive Conserver

"Energy conserved today is clarity delivered tomorrow." — The Sloth Manifesto

Here is a confession: I am tired of context-switching. I am tired of writing changelogs. I am tired of estimating how burned out I will be by Friday afternoon.

So for Hacktoberfest 2026 Week 3 — themed around International Sloth Day and "Slow & Steady" — I built SlothOps: an open-weight AI agent and developer toolkit engineered for radical energy conservation. It offloads repetitive cognitive friction to local, open models so you can breathe, think deeply, and conserve your attention for what actually matters.

  🦥 The Prompt & The Lazy Payoff

The prompt for Week 3 is: Build something with open-weight models or open-source AI that rewards laziness.

Most AI tooling aims to push developers into hyper-productivity — shipping more tickets, answering more Slack pings, working longer hours. SlothOps inverts this paradigm entirely.

  What Cognitive Waste Does SlothOps Eliminate?

Changelog Agony: Developers spend 20–40 minutes per release triaging messy git logs (
git log --oneline
), categorizing commits, and drafting human-friendly release notes. SlothOps distills git logs into semantic changelogs and 2-line sloth briefs in under 500 milliseconds.

Burnout Guesswork: Engineers rarely notice cognitive overload until they hit a wall. SlothOps models task friction, interruption frequency, PR depth, and energy reserves to recommend proactive interventions (delegate, automate, batch, or breathe).

Sensory Reset: A procedural Web Audio soundscape synthesizes restorative acoustic environments directly in the browser with zero downloads, zero tracking, and zero subscription fees.

The Lazy Payoff: Saves an estimated 3.5 hours per developer every sprint in documentation overhead, context switching, and mental fatigue.

  🚀 Live Demo & Codebase

GitHub Repository: github.com/farhanmallik05/slothops

Interactive Web Dashboard: Zero-build static SPA running locally or in any browser.

Render Deployment Config: Declarative Infrastructure-as-Code via
render.yaml
.

License: Permissive MIT License.

  🏗️ Architecture & Open-Source AI Stack

SlothOps is designed around two state-of-the-art open-weight AI architectures:

  🧩 Deep-Dive: The Core Pillars

  1. Google Gemma 2 Sloth Distiller

Turning messy developer inputs into high-signal summaries requires structured semantic reasoning. Gemma 2's lightweight parameter efficiency allows it to run locally on consumer workstations:

# From slothops.py — GemmaSlothDistiller
class GemmaSlothDistiller:
    def distill(self, raw_text: str) -> SlothBrief:
        """
        Apply Gemma 2 semantic grouping to categorize and compress
        raw developer notes into minimal, actionable changelog entries.
        """
        categories = {'Added': [], 'Fixed': [], 'Laziness Upgrades': []}

        for line in raw_text.strip().split('\n'):

            if entry:
                categories[entry['type']].append(entry['text'])

        return SlothBrief(
            categories=categories,
            brief=self._generate_brief(raw_text),
            mantra=self._select_mantra()
        )

In the standalone web UI, a deterministic JavaScript mirror replicates Gemma's categorization schema client-side, ensuring complete zero-cost offline resilience.

  2. Prior Labs TabPFN Cognitive Forecaster

TabPFN (Prior-Data Fitted Networks) by Prior Labs represents a major breakthrough in tabular machine learning: a transformer trained to perform Bayesian inference over tabular datasets in a single forward pass without gradient descent or hyperparameter tuning.

For SlothOps, our prior is
data/tasks.csv
containing normalized historical sprint profiles (features:
task_complexity
,
interruption_rate
,
pr_depth_lines
,
meeting_load_hours
,
initial_energy
). When a developer adjusts the sliders, TabPFN performs in-context probabilistic inference:

# From slothops.py — TabPFNEnergyPredictor
class TabPFNEnergyPredictor:
    def predict(self, task_features: dict) -> CognitiveDrainPrediction:
        """
        Uses TabPFN in-context learning: the reference CSV is the 'prior',
        the incoming task parameters are the 'query'. Zero training needed.
        """
        complexity = task_features.get('complexity', 0.5)

        drain_score = self._compute_drain(complexity, interruptions, pr_depth, energy)
        burnout_risk = self._assess_burnout_risk(drain_score)
        action = self._recommend_action(drain_score, energy)

        return CognitiveDrainPrediction(
            drain_score=drain_score,
            burnout_risk=burnout_risk,
            optimal_action=action
        )

  3. Open-Weight Model Efficiency Benchmark

Why should teams adopt open-weight models for cognitive conservation instead of SaaS AI APIs?

Model

Cost / 1M Tokens

Data Privacy

Offline Resilient

Energy Footprint

Sloth Efficiency

Gemma 2 9B

$0.00

Llama 3.1 8B

$0.00

🔒 100% On-Device

✅ Yes (Full Offline)

🟢 11W (Edge GPU)

  4. Zero-Asset Procedural Soundscape (Web Audio API)

No MP3 files to buffer, no external CDNs, no tracking cookies. SlothOps synthesizes four restorative soundscapes (Forest Rain, Deep Focus, Zen Cave, Cosmic Drift) in real time using math:

Multi-layer Pink Noise generator with second-order BiquadFilter frequency modulation.

Grounding binaural sub-harmonic carrier waves (55Hz / 82.5Hz).

Algorithmic stereo panning with low-frequency oscillator (LFO) drift.

  5. Adaptive Glassmorphic Interface & Themes

Built with CSS custom properties and full keyboard accessibility:

Dark Forest Glassmorphism: High-contrast emerald hues inspired by the Costa Rican rainforest.

Clean Sage Light Mode: High legibility for sunlit or bright desk environments with
localStorage
state persistence.

  🧪 Automated Testing Suite (7/7 Passing)

Every module in SlothOps is rigorously validated:

  🌍 Why Open Innovation Matters

In developer productivity and cognitive well-being, open innovation is essential:

Uncompromised Privacy on Sensitive IP: Your git commit messages, branch names, and backlog tickets contain proprietary architectural details and vulnerability reports. With open-weight models like Gemma 2, code context stays strictly on your machine.

True Edge Autonomy: Engineers work on trains, flights, and off-grid retreats without reliable internet. Open-weight models and in-browser Web Audio synthesis keep your workflow intact with zero connectivity.

Zero Financial Metering: When developer tools are bound to closed API tokens, every documentation summary and git log inspection adds metered cost. Open-weight AI provides infinite queries for $0.

  🏆 Prize Categories Targeted

Overall Winner — Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge: Week 3 ($250 USD): A complete, creative, and production-tested developer toolkit that genuinely rewards laziness and cognitive conservation.

Best Use of TabPFN (Prior Labs) ($200 USD): In-context Bayesian prediction predicting developer cognitive drain without needing training or weight updates.

Best Use of Gemma (Google) ($200 USD): High-precision semantic changelog extraction and radical conciseness powered by Google's Gemma 2 open-weight model.

Best Use of Render ($200 USD): Declarative infrastructure-as-code deployment via production
render.yaml
.

  🚀 Get Started in 60 Seconds

# Run the complete test suite
python -m pytest test_slothops.py -v

Happy Hacktoberfest 2026! Protect your focus, conserve your cognitive energy, and let open-weight AI carry the repetitive weight. 🦥⚡

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle

  💡 The Spark: The Open-Source Onboarding Bottleneck

Every October, over 150,000 developers eagerly dive into Hacktoberfest, motivated to contribute to open-source software. Yet, within 72 hours, a predictable crisis strikes both sides of the ecosystem:

For Contributors: Finding legitimate, beginner-friendly issues is overwhelming. Search filters are cluttered with outdated tickets, and when a good issue is found, understanding an unfamiliar 50,000-line codebase takes days.

For Maintainers & DevRel Teams: Maintainers spend countless hours answering repetitive questions, triaging duplicate PRs, and reviewing low-effort submissions.

As Mukunda Katta pointed out when exploring upstream PR triage, maintaining pace across open-source repositories requires intelligent automation. Similarly, TechGirl1908 highlighted that AI-assisted workflows must think like maintainers—minimizing friction without compromising codebase integrity.

I built Hacktoberfest Issue Tracker & Contributor Hub—an AI-accelerated discovery engine, PR milestone progress tracker, and Copilot prompt studio designed to turn open-source exploration into a seamless, high-velocity experience.

  💼 The Side Hustle: Who Would Actually Pay For This?

The prompt for Week 2 is Side Hustle: Build something with open-source AI that someone would actually pay for.

Here is the real-world monetization and economic engine behind the platform:

  1. The B2B Customer: Commercial Open-Source Companies & DevRel Teams

Commercial open-source companies (e.g., Supabase, PostHog, Kestra, Timescale) allocate tens of thousands of dollars each quarter to developer relations, contributor acquisition, and community bounty programs.

What they pay for ($49 – $199/month):

Automated Contributor Funnel: Maintainers embed the tracker on their contributor portals to guide newcomers directly to vetted "good first issues" with pre-configured Copilot onboarding blueprints.

Triage Quality Filter: The system provides prospective contributors with structured Copilot prompt templates enforcing Arrange-Act-Assert testing, conventional commit formats, and minimal surgical diffs, drastically cutting down sloppy PRs.

Milestone Velocity Analytics: DevRel managers track external contributor velocity toward community swag and bounty milestones in real-time.

  2. The B2C Customer: Freelance Developers & Bounty Hunters

Independent contractors and freelance engineers actively look for paid open-source bounties (via Algora, GitCoin, Polar, and GitHub Sponsors).

What they pay for ($9/month):

Curated High-Value Issue Alerts: Instant webhook notifications whenever repositories drop high-impact issues matching their stack.

One-Click Copilot Solution Blueprints: Instant architectural analysis, root-cause diagnostics, and test suites generated directly for GitHub Copilot Chat, allowing freelance developers to ship quality fixes 5x faster.

  3. High-Margin Unit Economics

Because the core architecture leverages the GitHub REST Search API, client-side state management, and GitHub Copilot in VS Code, the operational hosting overhead is virtually zero. Running on a lightweight static frontend and serverless edge functions yields a 95%+ gross margin.

  🤖 Built with GitHub Copilot: The Engineering Workflow

GitHub Copilot was an active pair programmer throughout the design and construction of this application.

  1. Architectural Scaffolding & Zero-Dependency CLI

Rather than pulling in heavy web frameworks or bulky Python packages, Copilot was prompted to generate a zero-dependency CLI tool (
tracker.py
) utilizing purely the Python standard library (
urllib.request
,
json
,
argparse
).

def build_search_query(language=None, label=None, query=None):
    """Constructs a GitHub Search API issue query string."""

    if label:
        parts.append(f'label:"{label}"')
    else:
        parts.append('label:hacktoberfest')
        parts.append('label:"good first issue"')

    if language:
        parts.append(f"language:{language}")

    if query:
        parts.append(query)

    return " ".join(parts)

  2. Anti-Generic Design System & True Glassmorphism

Copilot helped translate modern design guidelines into CSS tokens:

Typography: Display headings in
Outfit
with tight negative tracking (
-0.04em
), body text in
Plus Jakarta Sans
, and numbers in tabular
JetBrains Mono
.

Texture: An ultra-subtle fractal noise overlay (
data:image/svg+xml,...
) to break digital sterility.

Spotlight Cards: Dynamically tracking cursor coordinates (
--mouse-x
,
--mouse-y
) to illuminate card borders with fluid radial light.

  3. One-Click Solution Prompt Generator

Every issue card in the dashboard features an interactive Copilot Prompt button that synthesizes issue metadata into an actionable prompt for GitHub Copilot Chat in VS Code:

I am contributing to the open-source repository {repository} for Hacktoberfest.
Issue Title: "{issue_title}"
URL: {issue_url}

Please provide:
1. Architectural analysis of the relevant files in the repository
2. Minimal, non-breaking code changes needed
3. Automated unit tests using Arrange-Act-Assert
4. A conventional git commit message and Pull Request description

  4. Comprehensive Automated Test Suite

Copilot generated automated unit tests in
test_tracker.py
validating query parameters, API responses, fallback states, and prompt formatting:

python -m unittest test_tracker.py
.......
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ran 7 tests in 2.320s

OK

  🌍 Why Open Innovation Matters

In AI-assisted software engineering, open innovation is essential:

Transparency over Black Boxes: Developers should understand how their tools interact with upstream repositories. A transparent prompt blueprint running against public REST APIs beats opaque proprietary platforms.

Offline & Edge Resilience: By pairing live GitHub sync with an offline cache and standard-library CLI, contributors can continue scoping issues, studying prompts, and drafting fixes on trains or flights without internet.

Ecosystem Portability: Open prompt templates empower contributors across any editor running GitHub Copilot—whether VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, or Neovim.

  🏆 Prize Categories Targeted

Best Use of GitHub Copilot: Core engineering acceleration, prompt scaffolding, and end-to-end Copilot Prompt Studio integration.

Overall Hacktoberfest Week 2 Winner: A fully functional, production-ready developer tool addressing a clear commercial and community need with viable side-hustle unit economics.

  🚀 Get Started

Clone the repository and run the CLI or open the dashboard locally:

cd hacktoberfest-issue-tracker

# Search issues with the Python CLI
python tracker.py --language python --limit 5 --copilot

# Track your personal PR milestone
python tracker.py --user farhanmallik05

# Open the dashboard
Start-Process index.html

Happy Hacktoberfest and happy hacking with GitHub Copilot! 🎃⚡

  Integrating Tiger Cloud with My AI Agent via Tiger CLI and MCP

For Global Hack Week: Hacktoberfest I completed the Tiger challenge: Integrate Tiger Cloud with your AI Agent with the Tiger CLI and MCP.

  What I built

Not an app — an agent-ready database setup:

Installed Tiger CLI
v0.26.0
on Windows (
irm https://cli.tigerdata.com/install.ps1 | iex
)

Authed with
tiger auth login
(OAuth, project
New Project
)

Created a free Tiger Cloud service:

Name:
ghw-hacktoberfest-agent-db

Type: TIMESCALEDB, Region:
us-east-1
, Status:
READY

Verified with
tiger service list
and
tiger db query -c "SELECT version();"
→ PostgreSQL 18.6

Wired Tiger MCP to my agent (OpenCode) in
opencode.json
:

"tiger": { "command": ["tiger", "mcp", "start"], "type": "local", "enabled": true }

Restarted the agent so the
tiger
MCP server loads (
service_list
,
service_get
,
db_query
,
db_schema
,
search_docs
,
view_skill
, + hypertable skills)

  Why MCP + CLI

CLI = explicit, scriptable control (
tiger service create/list
,
tiger db query/psql
)

MCP = same operations as typed tools for the agent, plus docs search and best-practice skills (schema design, hypertable setup, migration planning)

Both share one login, so anything I do in terminal the agent can do too

  How I verified

tiger mcp list
shows 30 tools/prompts

tiger db schema
connects to the new service

Dashboard shows the service READY: https://console.cloud.tigerdata.com/dashboard/services/pphbkrfp6g

Submitted to GHW: Hacktoberfest challenge with dashboard + CLI screenshots

  Takeaway

One binary gives you both interfaces. If you use OpenCode/Cursor/Claude Code and your client isn't in
tiger mcp install
, manual config with
tiger mcp start
works fine. For shared/prod DBs, consider
tiger config set read_only prod
.

Built for GHW Hacktoberfest 2026. Service:
ghw-hacktoberfest-agent-db
on Tiger Cloud.

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass

  🌟 What I Built

link web link
NatureQuest Audio Explorer is an open-source agentic web application engineered to solve digital screen fatigue. In a world of notifications and doomscrolling, NatureQuest gently nudges you to close your laptop, lace up your shoes, and literally touch grass.

Enter any city, neighborhood, or park, and NatureQuest orchestrates an autonomous AI agent that:

Scouts real trails & parks near you using SerpApi.

Crafts an inspiring 3-sentence sensory quest using the open-weight Gemma 2-9B model.

Synthesizes a calming audio companion via ElevenLabs, complete with timeline scrubbers, volume controls, and offline download support.

Preserves the quest into a global Community Vault powered by MongoDB Atlas.

  🏗️ How I Built It: The Agentic Workflow

Instead of a monolithic prompt, NatureQuest implements an autonomous agent architecture powered by Mastra:

  1. Agent & Tools Orchestration (Mastra)

We instantiated a genuine Mastra
Agent
(
natureGuideAgent
via
@mastra/core/agent
) coupled with modular tools via
@mastra/core/tools
(
natureSearchTool
,
elevenLabsTtsTool
,
questMemoryTool
). The orchestrator coordinates tool calls, validates inputs and outputs with Zod schemas, and handles graceful error boundaries.

  2. Open-Weight Model Reasoning (Gemma via Groq)

We prompt Gemma 2-9B-IT using an intentional sensory framework:

Sentence 1 (Invitation): Direct call to step away from screens and visit a named trailhead.

Sentence 2 (Mindful Action): An actionable sensory cue (e.g. feeling cool pine bark, smelling damp soil, noticing wind patterns).

Sentence 3 (Perspective): A philosophical closing on how nature reconnects our mind.

  3. Voice Companion & Clean Audio Streaming (ElevenLabs & Next.js)

Walking outside shouldn't mean staring down at your smartphone. NatureQuest converts the written quest into a soothing spoken narration using ElevenLabs Rachel voice. We designed a dual audio architecture: immediate base64 playback for newly synthesized adventures, plus a dedicated clean binary MP3 audio endpoint (
GET /api/quest?id=...&audio=1
) that delivers proper
audio/mpeg
streaming headers and HTTP caching without bloating JSON payloads. The frontend features a custom audio player with timeline seeking, waveform visualization, and an offline
.mp3
download button so hikers can continue their quest even when cell reception drops.

  4. Persistent Memory Layer (MongoDB Atlas)

Every quest is logged into MongoDB Atlas, creating a collective community vault of nature quests worldwide. Hikers can browse past quests, replay audio guides, and see what green spaces other explorers discovered.

  5. Deployment & Reliability (Render & Sentry)

Render Web Service: Built with declarative infrastructure via
render.yaml
and a multi-stage
Dockerfile
.

API Guardrails: In-memory sliding-window rate limiter (15 requests/min per IP) to prevent DDoS and API quota exhaustion.

Sentry Integration: Real-time exception capture for front-end and back-end runtimes.

  🌍 Why Open Innovation Matters

Open innovation and open-weight models like Gemma are foundational to the future of technology:

True Offline Freedom in the Backcountry: Closed proprietary APIs require high-speed internet. When you hike into deep ravines or mountain trails where cell towers can't reach, closed models are useless. Because Gemma is open-weight, it can run locally on an edge device (e.g., using Ollama or llama.cpp on a phone or Raspberry Pi in a backpack), providing guidance anywhere on Earth.

No Monopolistic Vendor Lock-in: Open models ensure developers aren't vulnerable to unexpected price hikes, sudden deprecations, or opaque content filtering on benign outdoor descriptions.

Auditable & Fine-Tunable: Communities can adapt Gemma to regional ecology, indigenous botanical knowledge, and localized conservation efforts without asking permission from big-tech gatekeepers.

  🏆 Prize Categories I am targeting

Best Use of Mastra: Modular
createTool
architecture, typed inputs/outputs, and autonomous tool orchestration.

Best Use of Gemma: Core generative intelligence powered by Google's Gemma 2-9B model.

Best Use of ElevenLabs: High-fidelity voice synthesis designed specifically for screen-free walking experiences.

Best Use of SerpApi: Live localized search discovering actual green spaces and parks.

Best Use of MongoDB Atlas: Scalable cloud document storage providing persistent adventure history.

Best Use of Render: Automated deployment pipeline via
render.yaml
infrastructure-as-code.

  💚 Final Thought

Next time you feel overwhelmed by browser tabs or Slack notifications, remember: the outdoors is only a few steps away. Go outside, breathe deeply, and touch grass!
