Five Acceptance Checks for an Enquiry Form That Reports Success

Turn a vague “the form works” sign-off into concrete checks a developer and sales owner can both verify.

Agree on the meaning of success before writing the toast

In the Fetch API, response.ok is true for HTTP statuses in the 200–299 range. It says nothing by itself about which business step your endpoint completed.

For an asynchronous form endpoint, a contract might return the JSON below only after server-side validation and the agreed acceptance step. This is an illustrative response shape, not a deployed endpoint:

{"status":"accepted","submissionId":"<server-issued-id>"}

In that contract, “accepted” must not silently become “email delivered”. HTTP 202 means accepted for processing; completion is not guaranteed by that status.

Write confirmation copy that matches the contract. Keep operational mail outcomes separate from the browser response.

 1. Invalid input should fail in both relevant places

Try missing required fields and a malformed reply address through the normal UI. Verify a useful visible error.

Then check server-side validation separately in your authorised test environment. Client-side validation improves the interaction, but it cannot replace server-side checks. Keep the fields and limits consistent across the browser, server and storage.

 2. A notification failure should leave something diagnosable

Exercise the notification-failure path in a controlled test environment. Do not deliberately break the live recipient configuration for a test.

Check whether the application retains the accepted submission, where that is the promised design, and makes the failure visible to an authorised operator. Keep credentials, raw personal data and internal stack traces out of buyer-facing errors.

 3. An uncertain response should not trigger a blind second submission

Simulate a slow or lost response in the test environment. Check what the server accepted before deciding that a retry is safe.

The backend should follow its documented retry and duplicate-handling behaviour. A spinner and disabled submit button are useful interaction details, but they do not resolve a request that reached the server just before the connection failed.

 4. The received message should preserve what sales needs

Use labelled test values and inspect the actual recipient copy. Verify product context, the reply address, line breaks and any supported character sets or attachments.

Check the reply action as well as the visible body. A buyer’s email printed in the message does not establish that Reply targets that buyer.

 5. A phone submission should reach a named owner

Complete the route on a phone: understandable labels, visible errors, usable controls and a clear confirmation. Then ask the designated recipient to find the test message and identify who will handle it.

Record the page, version, actual test time, result and unresolved points. Mark internal tests separately from real enquiries.

These checks form a release checklist, not a claim that a website has improved its conversion rate.
