In this study, five spatially balanced sampling methods, i.e., generalized random-tessellation stratified (GRTS), local pivotal method (LPM), spatially correlated Poisson sampling (SCPS), local cube method (LCUBE), and balanced acceptance sampling (BAS) were compared to simple random sampling (SRS) based on a livestock disease transmission model on a hypothetical region (195 km × 300 km) populated with 6000 farms in terms of the probability of detection by sample size. Given a fixed sample size, four of the five spatially balanced sampling methods provided better performance than SRS, i.e., higher probabilities of detecting at least one infected farms over a range of regional prevalence evaluated (1%-5%). That is, for any given probability of detection, spatially balanced methods required testing fewer farms than SRS. In an era of pandemics, active regional surveillance for early detection of emerging pathogens becomes urgent, yet shrinking budgets impose intractable constraints. The better performance and higher efficiency of spatially balanced sampling methods suggests a potential improvement in regional livestock disease surveillances and a partial solution to the challenge of affordable surveillance. The monitoring of the disease prevalence in a population is an essential component of its adaptive management. However, field data often lead to biased estimates. This is the case for brucellosis infection of ibex in the Bargy massif (France). A test-and-cull program is being carried out in this area to manage the infection captured animals are euthanized when seropositive, and marked and released when seronegative. Because this mountainous species is difficult to capture, field workers tend to focus the capture effort on unmarked animals. Indeed, marked animals are less likely to be infected, as they were controlled and negative during previous years. As the proportion of marked animals in the population becomes large, captured animals can no longer be considered as an unbiased sample of the population. We designed an integrated Bayesian model to correct this bias, by estimating the seroprevalence in the population as the combination of the separate estimates of the seroprevalence among unmarked animals (estimated from the data) and marked animals (estimated with a catalytic infection model, to circumvent the scarcity of the data). As seroprevalence may not be the most responsive parameter to management actions, we also estimated the proportion of animals in the population with an active bacterial infection. The actual infection status of captured animals was thus inferred as a function of their age and their level of antibodies, using a model based on bacterial cultures carried out for a sample of animals. Focusing on the population of adult females in the core area of the massif, i.e. with the highest seroprevalence, this observational study shows that seroprevalence has been divided by two between 2013 (51%) and 2018 (21%). Moreover, the likely estimated proportion of actively infected females in the same population, though very imprecise, has decreased from a likely estimate of 34% to less than 15%, suggesting that the management actions have been effective in reducing infection prevalence.Foaming is a common operational problem that occurs in activated sludge (AS) from many wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), but the characteristic of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and human pathogenic bacteria (HPB) in foams is generally lacking. Here, we used a metagenomic approach to characterize the profile of ARGs and HPB in foams and AS from full-scale WWTPs receiving pesticide wastewater. No significant difference in the microbial communities was noted between the AS and foam samples. The diversity and abundance of ARGs in the foams were similar to those in the pertinent AS samples. Procrustes analysis suggested that the bacterial community is the major driver of ARGs. Metagenomic assembly also indicated that most ARGs (e.g., multidrug, rifamycin, peptides, macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin, tetracycline, fluoroquinolone, and beta-lactam resistance genes) were carried by chromosomes rather than mobile genetic elements. Moreover, the relative abundances of HPB, Pseudomonas putida and Mycobacterium smegmatis, were enriched in the foam samples. Nine HPB were identified as carriers of 21 ARG subtypes, of which Pseudomonas aeruginosa could carry 12 ARG subtypes. Overall, this study indicates the prevalence of ARGs, HPB, and ARG-carrying HPB in foams, which highlights the potential risk of foams in spreading ARGs and HPB into the surrounding environments.Removal of lead (II) (Pb2+) from contaminated soil was investigated using a new-type switchable-array-electrode electrokinetics assisted by permeable reactive barrier (SAE/EK-PRB). The soil pH after treatments with SAE/EK-PRB ranged from 3.5 to 4.8, and the peak values of current density was highest with 3.01 mA/cm2 at voltage gradient 2.5 V/cm. Both voltage gradient and moisture content promoted the removal of Pb2+. Moisture content 35% and 2.5 V/cm were considered as the optional operating conditions. Different PRB filling materials including zeolite, fly ash, active carbon alone and the combination of fly ash and graphene oxide were, therefore, investigated under the optional operating conditions. Pitstop2 The highest removal reached 92.6% with the combination of fly ash and graphene oxide. Pb2+ forms in the soil with different PRB filling materials showed the percentages of weak bindings, such as exchangeable and carbonate forms decreased. However, strong binding, residual form increased largely, indicating the SAE/EK-PRB could effectively reduce the environmental risk of Pb2+ to a great extent. Fly ash and the combination of zeolite and fly ash as PRB filling materials demonstrated to be highly promising for the effective EK remediation of Pb2+-contaminated soil, taking the economic and environmental principles and remediation efficiency into consideration.Lead pollution precaution caused by lead-based anode corrosion is a hot and challenging issue for zinc electrowinning. A novel functional lead-based anode (MnO2 pre-coated anode-MPA) was precisely fabricated and its long-term performances were studied compared with typical Pb-1%Ag anode (TPA). Results indicated that MPA posed excellent effects on synergistic inhibiting lead dissolution and reducing hazardous pollutants generation, and decreasing the lead content of zinc products by 81%. Further, the underlying mechanism of film growth and transformation in structure, composition and crystal phase, the migration and distribution of lead and anode slime during electrolytic, were clarified in-depth. Dynamic material flow analysis confirmed that MPA reduced the entire lead migration amount by over 92% compared with TPA. The compact multilayer structure of the MPA film and self-reparation effects of local structure provided better and persistent protection for the lead matrix, which greatly retarded the high-speed corrosion of lead anode.Pitstop2

In this paper, we propose a new method for coding a full complex hologram with random phase. Since holograms with random phase have very unique spatial and frequency characteristics, a new compression method suitable for such holograms is required. We analyze the frequency characteristics of holograms with random phases and propose a new adaptive discrete wavelet transform (aDWT). Next, we propose a new modified zerotree alogrithm (mZTA) suitable for the subband configuration generated by the modified wavelet transform method. The results of the compression using the proposed method showed higher efficiency than the previous method, and the reconstructed images showed visually superior results.Metasurfaces provide an extraordinary way to control electromagnetic waves by abrupt change of optical properties within an optically thin interface. In this paper, by introducing vanadium dioxide (VO2) into the metasurface, efficient tunable terahertz phase modulation is designed to realize independent control of linearly and circularly polarized terahertz waves. The working resonator of the metasurface can be adjustable by controlling the temperature of VO2, resulting in the tunable function between resonant phase for linearly polarized waves and Pancharatnam-Berry phase for circularly polarized waves. As a proof of concept, two metasurfaces are designed for integrating two distinct functionalities in one structure, i.e. 1-bit metasurface switched between the abnormal THz deflector and the THz scatter and 3-bit metasurface switched between the vortex THz transmitter and the THz focusing mirror. The proposed tunable resonator structure provides a flexible way for extending the functionality of metadevice, which has a great potential value in integrated optics and wearable optics. We present a method to deterministically obtain broad bandwidth frequency combs in microresonators. These broadband frequency combs correspond to cnoidal waves in the limit when they can be considered soliton crystals or single solitons. The method relies on moving adiabatically through the (frequency detuning)×(pump amplitude) parameter space, while avoiding the chaotic regime. We consider in detail Si3N4 microresonators with small or intermediate dimensions and an SiO2 microresonator with large dimensions, corresponding to prior experimental work. We also discuss the impact of thermal effects on the stable regions for the cnoidal waves. Their principal effect is to increase the detuning for all the stable regions, but they also skew the stable regions, since higher pump power corresponds to higher power and hence increased temperature and detuning. The change in the detuning is smaller for single solitons than it is for soliton crystals. Without temperature effects, the stable regions for single solitons and soliton crystals almost completely overlap. When thermal effects are included, the stable region for single solitons separates from the stable regions for the soliton crystals, explaining in part the effectiveness of backwards-detuning to obtaining single solitons.Inspired by the robust capability and outstanding performance of convolutional neural networks (CNN) in image classification tasks, CNN-based hyperspectral face recognition methods are worthy of further exploration. However, hyperspectral imaging poses new challenges including high data dimensionality and interference between bands on spectral dimension. High data dimensionality can result in high computational costs. Moreover, not all bands are equally informative and discriminative. The usage of a useless spectral band may even introduce noises and weaken the performance. For the sake of solving those problems, we proposed a novel CNN framework, which adopted a channel-wise attention mechanism and Lasso algorithm to select the optimal spectral bands. The framework is termed as the sparse spectral channel-wise attention-based network (SSCANet) where the SSCA-block focuses on the inter-band channel relationship. Different from other methods which usually select the useful bands manually or in a greedy fashion, SSCA-block can adaptively recalibrate spectral bands by selectively emphasizing informative bands and suppressing less useful ones. Especially, a Lasso constraint strategy can zero out the bands during the training of the network, which can boost the training process by making the weights of bands sparser. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the proposed method in comparison of other state-of-the-art hyperspectral face recognition algorithms on three public datasets HK-PolyU, CMU, and UWA. The experimental results demonstrate that SSCANet based method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods for face recognition on the benchmark.Generation of terahertz radiation by optical rectification of intense near-infrared laser pulses in N-benzyl-2-methyl-4-nitroaniline (BNA) is investigated in detail by carrying out a complete characterization of the terahertz radiation. selleckchem We studied the scaling of THz yield with pump pulse repetition rate and fluence which enabled us to predict the optimal operating conditions for BNA crystals at room temperature for 800 nm pump wavelength. Furthermore, recording the transmitted laser spectrum allowed us to calculate the nonlinear refractive index of BNA at 800 nm.Due to the characteristics of photon-counting LIDAR, there exists range walk error (RWE) when the intensity of the signal fluctuates. In this paper, an effective method to rectify underwater RWE was proposed. The method allows the separation of signal detections from noise detections, and based on a prior model, the method can compensate for RWE. An underwater experiment verified its feasibility and results showed RWE of three parts in a plane was reduced from 75mm to 7mm, from 45mm to 3mm and from 5mm to 0mm, respectively, even when the rate of backscatter photons reached 4.8MHz. The proposed correction method is suitable for high precision underwater photon-counting 3D imaging application, especially when the signal intensity varies sharply. We experimentally investigate the parametric down-conversion process in a nonlinear bulk crystal, driven by two non-collinear pump modes. The experiment shows the emergence of bright hot-spots in modes shared by the two pumps, similar to the phenomenology recently observed in 2D nonlinear photonic crystals. By exploiting the spatial walk-off between the two extraordinary pump modes, we have been able to recreate a peculiar resonance condition, reported by a local enhancement of the parametric gain, which corresponds to a transition from a three-mode to a four-mode coupling. From a quantum point of view, this opens the way to the generation of multimode entangled states of light, such as tripartite or quadripartite states, in simple bulk nonlinear sources.selleckchem

To identify evidence related to association between the nurse work environment and severe maternal morbidity in high-income countries.

Quantitative Systematic review.

Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, PubMed/Medline, and Scopus were systematically searched for studies published in English from January 1990-December 2019. Studies were selected based on a priori eligibility criteria.

Two independent reviewers used a two-phase screening process. First, the reviewers assessed the eligibility of studies based on titles and abstracts; followed by assessing the full text of all remaining studies based on the eligibility criteria. An adapted version of the Joanna Briggs Institute data extraction tool was created to extract relevant information from studies reviewed during the second screening phase.

Of the 535 de-duplicated articles examined by two independent reviewers, there were no eligible empirical studies that assessed the association beerve to elucidate research, practice, and policy opportunities to reduce preventable severe maternal morbidity in high-income countries.
As the first known systematic review of its kind, this 'empty review' provides evidence of a lacking body of literature on the association between nurse work environment, as a modifiable organizational characteristic and preventable severe maternal morbidity in high-income countries. This article provides a call to action in the form of five recommendations for future nursing research and practice, which could serve to elucidate research, practice, and policy opportunities to reduce preventable severe maternal morbidity in high-income countries.
To explore older individuals' experienced masticatory ability and the impact of masticatory ability in daily life.

This study applied an open-ended exploratory approach using inductive reasoning. The design was inspired by the qualitative method grounded theory. The final sample consisted of twelve older participants. Seven were men, and five were women. The interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. The interviewer successively read the transcribed data and analysed the material in cooperation with the authors.

Three categories developed from the data; Deteriorating oral health and functional loss, Eating habits, Prosthetic rehabilitation and function. A core category named Adaptation emerged. Adaptation describes how individuals successfully could adapt to a decreased function and in spite of this develop a positive view of their masticatory ability.

The participants described an experience of gradually deteriorating oral function that had affected their masticatory ability. By adaptinabits. Future research should therefore focus on how dental treatment can be combined with other interventions, such as dietary counselling and physiotherapy to recover physiological function. The H-NS-like proteins MvaT and MvaU act coordinately as global repressors in Pseudomonas aeruginosa by binding to AT-rich regions of the chromosome. Although cells can tolerate loss of either protein, identifying their combined regulatory effects has been challenging because the loss of both proteins is lethal due to induction of prophage Pf4 and subsequent superinfection of the cell. Selleckchem Napabucasin In other bacteria, H-NS promotes the cellular fitness by inhibiting intragenic transcription from AT-rich target regions, preventing them from sequestering RNA polymerase; however, it is not known whether MvaT and MvaU function similarly. Here, we utilize a parental strain that cannot be infected by Pf4 phage to define the collective MvaT and MvaU regulon and demonstrate that the combined loss of both MvaT and MvaU leads to increased intragenic transcription from loci directly controlled by these proteins. We further show that the loss of MvaT and MvaU leads to a striking redistribution of RNA polymerase containing σ70 to genomic regions vacated by these proteins. Our findings suggest that the ability of H-NS-like proteins to repress intragenic transcription is a universal function of these proteins and point to a second mechanism by which MvaT and MvaU may contribute to the growth of P. aeruginosa.[Cu(phen)2 ]2+ (phen=1,10-phenanthroline) is the first and still one of the most efficient artificial nucleases. In general, when the phen ligand is modified, the nucleolytic activity of its CuII complex is significantly reduced. This is most likely due to higher steric bulk of such ligands and thus lower affinity to DNA. CuII complexes with phen ligands having fluorinated substituents (F, CF3 , SF5 , SCF3 ) surprisingly showed excellent DNA cleavage activity-in contrast to the unsubstituted [Cu(phen)2 ]2+ -in the absence of the otherwise required classical, bioabundant external reducing agents like thiols or ascorbate. This nucleolytic activity correlates well with the half-wave potentials E1/2 of the complexes. Cancer cell studies show cytotoxic effects of all complexes with fluorinated ligands in the low μm range, whereas they were less toxic towards healthy cells (fibroblasts).
The aim of this study was to describe the experiences of the transition to adulthood for young people with long-term health challenges.

The metasynthesis approach was based on the guidelines by Sandelowski and Barroso for synthesizing qualitative research.

Seven electronic databases CINAHL, Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scopus, and SocIndex were searched on 6-10 February 2020.

Studies were critically appraised using the Joanna Briggs critical appraisal tool. Qualitative data were extracted, meta-summarised, then meta-synthesized.

Nineteen qualitative studies were included in this review. Six themes illustrated experiences in the transition to adulthood wishing for an 'ordinary' life, significance of close network, working towards independence, in need of systemic resources and services, psychosocial challenges and keeping a positive attitude.

Young people with long-term health challenges wished for as 'ordinary' a life as possible in the future. In the transition to adulthood, they gradually gained more competence in self-management skills and knowledge and strived to become more independent.Selleckchem Napabucasin
