Why I Built FyleTransfer: Lessons From Building a File-Sharing Platform

Hi DEV Community! 👋

I'm a full-stack developer. I work with React, Next.js, Node.js, and MongoDB.

I enjoy building tools that solve real problems.

Today, I want to share a project I've been working on called FyleTransfer.

It's a web tool that helps people send files through links and QR codes.

In this post, I'll share why I started the project, how it works, and what I've learned from building it.

It Started With a Simple Question

Why does sharing a file need so many steps?

Think about a common task.

You need to send a PDF to a client. You upload it to a cloud drive, check the access settings, copy the link, and send it.

That works.

But what if you only need to send the file once?

You may not need a place to store it for years. You just need the other person to get it.

That was the main idea behind FyleTransfer.

I wanted to build a tool focused on file transfer, not long-term file storage.

 What I Wanted to Build

I started with a few goals.

Users should be able to upload files, share a link, and control access.

I also wanted the tool to work for people who send files as part of their work.

A designer may need to send images to a client.

A student may need to share notes.

A developer may need to send a ZIP file.

Each person has a different need, but the main task is the same.

Select a file. Share it. Let the other person download it.

 How FyleTransfer Works

The basic flow has three steps.

 1. Upload Files

Users can select up to 100 files at once.

For multiple files with a total size of 500 MB or less, the tool can create a ZIP file.

This helps keep the download process simple.

 2. Set Access Rules

Users can add a password before sharing.

They can also choose when the link should expire, from one day to five years.

Files are set to be deleted after the expiry period.

These options give users more control over the files they send.

 3. Share a Link or QR Code

Once the upload is done, users get a link and a QR code.

They can send the link through email or chat.

The other person can open it to access the file, subject to any password rules.

There is no need to create a shared folder for a one-time transfer.

 Adding Local Network File Sharing

One feature I wanted to explore was sharing between devices on the same network.

For example, you may have a laptop and a phone connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

You want to move a file from one device to the other.

FyleTransfer has a local network sharing feature with two workspace types.

Public Workspace

Users can share files or text in a public workspace.

Private Workspace

Users can create a private workspace with an ID and password.

This gives them a way to control who joins the workspace.

Working on this feature made me think more about device access, user flow, and how to make file sharing easy to understand.

 A Few Things I Learned

Building a product involves more than writing code.

Here are three lessons I want to share.

 1. Small Features Need Clear Rules

Take file expiry as an example.

At first, it sounds like a date field.

But the feature needs clear rules.

What happens after the expiry time?

Should the download link stop working?

When should the file be deleted?

These questions matter as much as the interface.

 2. A Simple Interface Takes Work

Users should not have to learn how a file-sharing tool works.

The main actions need to be clear.

Upload.

Set a password if needed.

Choose an expiry date.

Share the link.

I try to keep the user focused on these steps.

 3. Think About Edge Cases

A user may upload one file or many files.

A ZIP file may be large.

A user may open an expired link.

Someone may enter the wrong password.

These cases need to be part of the plan.

Thinking about them early helps shape the code and the user experience.

 What's Next?

FyleTransfer is still a project I'm working to improve.

I want to focus on the upload flow, user experience, and how the tool handles different file-sharing needs.

I also plan to share more about the development side of the project.

That includes how I plan features, work with APIs, and deal with issues while building.

 Final Thoughts

One thing I've learned is that a useful product does not need to solve every problem.

It needs to solve a clear problem well.

FyleTransfer started with a simple goal: make it easier to send files without turning the task into a long process.

There's still work to do, and that's part of building software.

If you're working on your own project, I'd like to hear about it.

What's one small feature that turned out to be harder to build than you expected?

Thanks for reading!

Project: FyleTransfer

Facebook: facebook

Twitter: X.com
