tcomes. Future national policies and systematic approaches addressing the incidence, prevention, and treatment of alcoholic liver cirrhosis are indispensable.
The Publons platform provides integrated information on researchers, peer reviewers, publications and certain author metrics. Fedratinib molecular weight Central Asia is a potentially growing region in terms of young researchers.

Using the inbuilt Publons search, the top institutes of nine countries of Central Asia and neighbours were identified and data on their reviewers, number of publications, number of peer reviews completed were extracted. These were compared with demographics of the countries such as population, gross domestic product, number of physicians and proportion of population enrolled for higher education.

Amongst the top 15 institutes in Central Asia, China has claim to 12 while Kazakhstan has two and Iran has one. The number of top peer reviewers, number of verified reviews and Web of Science indexed publications from these top institutes varied directly with the number of researchers each had. Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan are not performing well on most of these while China seems to be an outlier on l Asia needs to be minimized by nurturing and mentoring potentially upcoming researchers in publication, peer reviewing as well as in ethics involved.
The advancement of treatment with direct-acting antiviral (DAA) agents has improved the cure rate of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection close to 100%. The aim of our study was to assess the real-world effectiveness and safety of DAA regimens for the treatment of patients with chronic HCV genotype 2.

We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of patients treated with sofosbuvir plus ribavirin (SOF + RBV) or glecaprevir/pibrentasvir (G/P) for chronic HCV genotype 2 infection at seven university hospitals in the Korean southeast region.

SOF + RBV therapy produced an 89% and 98.3% sustained virologic response 12 week (SVR12) after treatment completion in the full analysis set and per-protocol set, respectively, and the corresponding values for G/P therapy were 89.5% and 99.2%, respectively. The difference between the treatments was probably because 6.2% (59/953) of patients in the SOF + RBV group did not complete the treatment and 9.8% (14/143) in the G/P group did not test HCV RNA after treatment complets a high dropout rate in the SOF + RBV group, and the dropout analysis showed that these were patients with liver cirrhosis (LC; 43/285, 15.1%), especially those with decompensated LC (12/32, 37.5%). Therefore, an early initiation of antiviral therapy is recommended for a successful outcome before liver function declines. Furthermore, patients with decompensated LC who are considered candidates for SOF + RBV treatment should be carefully monitored to ensure that their treatment is completed, especially those with low hemoglobin and high alanine transaminase.
Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is an essential tool in emergency medicine (EM). We aimed to investigate the current status and perception of POCUS use in emergency medical centers in Korea.

A cross-sectional, nationwide survey was conducted using a mobile survey of physicians at emergency medical centers in Korea. The first message was sent on November 27, 2020, and the second message was sent on December 3, 2020 to the non-responders. The questionnaire comprised 6 categories and 24 questionnaires on demographics, current practice, education, perception, and barriers to the use of POCUS.

A total of 467 physicians participated in the survey (a response rate of 32% among 1,458 target physicians), of which 43% were residents and 57% were EM specialists. Most of the respondents (96%) answered that they use POCUS, of which 89% reported using it at least once a week. The most frequently used types of POCUS were focused assessment with sonography for trauma (68%) and echocardiography (66%). Musculoskeletal, centers in Korea more frequently perform various types of ultrasound scans compared to those 10 years prior. To further promote the use of POCUS, it is important to have an appropriate number of ultrasound devices and physicians in the emergency center along with systematic POCUS education.
For protection against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the Korean government recommended the KF94 mask or that a mask at the same level as the KF94 should be worn when contacting a patient with COVID-19. Furthermore, adequately fitted N95 respirators and KF94 masks are essential. We investigated the fit tests to determine whether healthcare workers had adequate protection with N95 respirators and KF94 masks.

In this prospective single-center simulation study, five N95 respirators (two made in the USA by 3M and three made in Korea) and six KF94 masks, the Korean standard medical masks, were tested. The fit factor (FF) and leakage rate were evaluated using a two-fit test device. Adequate protection (defined as FF ≥ 100 or leakage rate ≤ 5) rates were compared between N95 respirators and KF94 masks, and between made in Korea and the 3M N95 respirators. For KF94 masks, adequate protection rates were compared before and after ear strap fixation.

Overall, 30 participants were enrolled, and 330 fit tests sks appropriately, before contacting the patients. With their superior protection rate, wearing N95 respirators is recommended instead of KF94 masks, especially when performing aerosol-generating procedures.
Although adequate protection rate of N95 respirators was higher than that of KF94 masks, N95 respirator protection rate was not optimum. Thus, it is necessary to minimize exposure to risk by selecting an appropriate mask or respirator that adequately fits each person, and by wearing respirators or masks appropriately, before contacting the patients. With their superior protection rate, wearing N95 respirators is recommended instead of KF94 masks, especially when performing aerosol-generating procedures.
Masseter muscle pathologies include hypertrophy and the experience of pain, which clinically manifest with increased stiffness and tension. Assessment of muscle stiffness has been gaining importance among physicians dealing with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Currently, shear wave elastography (SWE) is still often performed by radiologists, while dentists diagnose, treat and monitor TMD.

In this cohort study, we investigated whether dentists trained to use SWE can obtain reliable measurements of masseter muscle stiffness following participation in a short training program and hands-on workshop.

A group of healthy volunteers was examined by an experienced radiologist and a novice dentist before and after the training.

The mean values of stiffness obtained by the operators were consistent and ranged from 10.20 kPa to 10.84 kPa. Intraobserver agreement was excellent for measurements of the radiologist (intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) 0.92 and 0.93, respectively). The training improved the agreement between measurements made by the dentist from poor before the training (ICC = 0.Fedratinib molecular weight

ration https//www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/, identifier CRD42020202441.Background Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is one of the main causes of acute kidney injury. Our previous results have shown that anti-oxidative stress decreased in the renal IRI model. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356 on oxidative stress, inflammation, and intestinal flora in renal IRI. Methods The model of renal IRI was established by cross-clamping the renal pedicle with non-traumatic vascular forceps. H&E staining was applied to observe the damage of kidney tissue in each group. The concentrations of serum blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine (Cre), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were detected by biochemical kit. ELISA measured the concentrations of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-8, IL-4, and IL-10. qRT-PCR was performed to detect molecular expressions of ATCC 4356, oxidative stress-related factors [nuclear factor-related factor 2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1)], inflammatory factors [tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL- inhibited the high level of apoptosis in the kidney tissue of I/R mice. In IRI mice, the top 3 different gut microbiota were Helicobacter, cultivated_bacterium, and k__Bacteria_ASV_3 compared with sham mice. Oral L. acidophilus ATCC 4356 reversed this change. Conclusion L. acidophilus ATCC 4356 attenuated renal IRI through anti-oxidative stress and anti-inflammatory response and improved the intestinal microbial distribution. Objectives Excessive oxygen (O2) administration may have a negative impact on tissue perfusion by inducing vasoconstriction and oxidative stress. selleckchem We aimed to evaluate the effects of different inhaled oxygen fractions (FiO2) on macro-hemodynamics and microvascular perfusion in a rat model. Methods Isoflurane-anesthetised spontaneously breathing male Wistar rats were equipped with arterial (carotid artery) and venous (jugular vein) catheters and tracheotomy, and randomized into three groups normoxia (FiO2 21%, n = 6), hyperoxia (FiO2 100%, n = 6) and mild hypoxia (FiO2 15%, n = 6). Euvolemia was maintained by infusing Lactate Ringer solution at 10 ml/kg/h. At hourly intervals for 4 h we collected measurements of mean arterial pressure (MAP); stroke volume index (SVI), heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (by means of echocardiography); arterial and venous blood gases; microvascular density, and flow quality (by means of sidestream dark field videomicroscopy on the hindlimb skeletal muscle). Results MAP and systemiscle microvascular density, while mild hypoxia has an opposite effect. Objective The purpose of this study was to explore the value of 18F-FDG PET/CT in monitoring the disease activity and predicting the prognosis of the Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD). Methods We retrospectively analyzed the electronic medical records of 45 AOSD patients who underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT in the Second Xiangya Hospital. PET/CT imaging and clinical information were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed. 18F-FDG uptake was assessed by measuring standard uptake value (SUV) in the spleen, liver, bone marrow, and lymph nodes. The spleen-to-liver ratio of the SUVmax (SLRmax) and SUVmean (SLRmean), the bone-to-liver ratio of the SUVmax (BLRmax), and SUVmean (BLRmean), and the lymph nodes-to-liver ratio of the SUVmax (LyLRmax) were calculated. Clinical and laboratory information were collected and evaluated for association with metabolic parameters of 18F-FDG PET/CT. The influencing factors for recurrence within 1 year were analyzed to determine whether 18F-FDG PET/CT can predict the prognosis of AOSD patSLRmean cutoff of 1.66 with a sensitivity of 72.7% and specificity of 80.0% had the highest performance in predicting recurrence. Conclusion The glucose metabolism of the liver, spleen, and bone marrow of AOSD patients were correlated with laboratory inflammatory indicators and system score, suggesting that 18F-FDG PET/CT could be applied to evaluate disease activity. Moreover, spleen 18F-FDG uptake may be a potential biomarker for predicting clinical prognosis of AOSD patients.Patients with rheumatic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and systemic lupus erythematosus, have increased risk of receiving total knee replacement surgery or total hip replacement surgery. We speculated that psoriasis could also attack the joints of the knees and hips, leading to an increased risk of receiving total knee replacement surgery or total hip replacement surgery. The aim of this study was to investigate the risk of total knee replacement or total hip replacement surgery in patients with psoriasis using a nationwide, population-based health claims database in Taiwan. Using the Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database, we identified 10,819 patients with psoriasis between 2000 and 2012. A comparison cohort consisting of five patients without psoriasis for each patient with psoriasis was assembled, based on frequency matching for sex, 10-year age interval, and index year. Both groups were followed until a diagnosis of the study outcomes (total knee replacement or total hip replacement surgery) or the end of the follow-up period. Incidence rate ratios (IRRs) for the outcome variables were calculated using multiple Poisson regression models. Female patients with psoriasis exhibited a significantly higher incidence of receiving total knee replacement surgery [adjusted IRR = 1.44, p = 0.014)]. Analyses stratified by age groups showed that the risk of receiving total knee replacement surgery was significantly higher older (adjusted IRR = 1.31, p = 0.047) patients with psoriasis. There were no significant differences in the risk of receiving total hip replacement surgery in patients with psoriasis compared with controls, either with or without stratification by sex or age groups. In conclusion, patients with psoriasis were associated with an increased risk of receiving total knee. Clinicians should be vigilant in assessing the presence of arthritis in these patients, and initiate strategies to delay or prevent the need for joint replacement.selleckchem

1-9.5; PR 18.0-18.4) and Hong Kong (PR 8.8-13.7; PR 10.6-12.7), respectively. The trend of quetiapine use was increasing in Taiwan, Hong Kong and the United States. As compared to older patients, the younger patients had more propensity to be prescribed second-generation APM for treatment in four countries. Trends in antipsychotic prescribing varied among countries. Quetiapine use was most prevalent in the United States and increasing in Taiwan and Hong Kong. The increasing use of quetiapine in the elderly patients might be due to its safety profile compared to other APMs.Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a common malignancy in China and globally, is primarily treated through surgical resection and liver transplantation, with chemotherapy as a significant synergistic option. Adenine (Ade), a nucleobase, exhibits antitumor effects by blocking human hepatic carcinoma cells in S phase and inhibiting tumor cell proliferation. However, its use is limited owing to its low solubility, poor targeting ability, and nephrotoxicity. Therefore, liver-targeting drug delivery systems have attracted considerable attention for the treatment of HCC. In this study, we explored the liver-targeting efficacy and antitumor effect of adenine-loaded glycyrrhetinic acid-modified hyaluronic acid (Ade/GA-HA) nanoparticles in vitro and in vivo. The GA-HA nanoparticles possessed obvious targeting specificity toward liver cancer cells, which was mainly achieved by the specific binding of the GA ligand to the GA receptor that was highly expressed on the liver cell membrane. In vitro and in vivo results showed that Ade/GA-HA nanoparticles could inhibit liver cancer cell proliferation and migration, promote apoptosis, and significantly inhibit the growth of tumor tissues. Altogether, this study is the first to successfully demonstrate that the targeting activity and antitumor effect of Ade against HCC are enhanced by using GA-HA nanoparticles in vitro and in vivo.
Diagnosis of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) primary infection during pregnancy or in immunocompetent patients relies on serology with detection of specific CMV-IgG and IgM. In case of positive CMV-IgM in pregnant women, CMV-IgG avidity is now widely recommended, but in general population it is not currently performed.

In this study, we aimed to determine CMV-IgM positive predictive values (PPV) in different clinical settings.

We conducted a retrospective study on positive CMV-IgM in our virology laboratory from 2013 to 2019, in three clinical groups screening in non-symptomatic pregnant women (group 1), pregnant women with ultrasound (US) abnormalities (group 2) and patients (general population) with clinical signs suggestive of CMV primary infection (group 3). CMV-IgG avidity had been performed in all cases allowing to evaluate PPV of positive CMV-IgM to diagnose CMV primary-infection in each group.

Between 2013 and 2019, 6859 serum samples were found positive for CMV-IgM and had been tested for CMV-IgG avidity, with 6560 sera for group 1, 30 for group 2 and 269 for group 3. Overall, low avidity confirming primary infection was observed respectively in 16.4 % for group 1, 36.7 % for group 2, and 35.3 % for group 3. CMV-IgM PPV was significantly lower in group 1 compared to groups 2 (p = 0.01) and 3 (p < 0.001).

Our observations highlight the major importance of including CMV-IgG avidity in the diagnostic algorithm, whatever the clinical situation (for immunocompetent patients), to confirm or exclude a recent CMV primary infection in case of positive CMV-IgM.
Our observations highlight the major importance of including CMV-IgG avidity in the diagnostic algorithm, whatever the clinical situation (for immunocompetent patients), to confirm or exclude a recent CMV primary infection in case of positive CMV-IgM.The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of nutrient restriction and melatonin supplementation during mid-to-late gestation on maternal and fetal small intestinal carbohydrase activities in sheep. Ewes were randomly assigned to one of 4 dietary treatments arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial design. Ewes were fed to provide 100% (adequate; ADQ) or 60% (restricted; RES) of nutrient recommendations, and diets were supplemented with either no melatonin (control; CON) or 5 mg melatonin/d (melatonin; MEL). This resulted in 4 treatment groups CON-ADQ (n = 7), CON-RES (n = 8), MEL-ADQ (n = 8), MEL-RES (n = 8). UBCS039 mouse Treatments began on day 50 of gestation, and ewes were euthanized on day 130 for tissue collection. The maternal and fetal small intestine were collected and assayed for small intestinal carbohydrase activities. Data were analyzed using the GLM procedure of SAS with fetal sex, melatonin, nutrition, and the melatonin by nutrition interaction included in the model statement. There were no melatonin activity per gram protein. These data indicate that some maternal and fetal carbohydrases are influenced by nutrient restriction and melatonin supplementation in sheep. More information is needed to understand how nutritional and hormonal factors regulate digestive enzyme activity in ruminants to design improved maternal nutrition programs to optimize fetal growth and development while maintaining maternal productivity.
Oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and oxidized LDL-mediated activation of the innate immune system have been recognized as early key events during the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Recent evidence identified eosinophils as a major source of enzymatic lipid oxidation and suggested a potential role of type 2 immunity in atherogenesis. However, the involvement of individual type 2 immune cell subsets involved in this process has been incompletely defined. We therefore sought to determine the role of eosinophils during LDL oxidation and the pathogenesis of this disease.

Using eosinophil-deficient dblGATA1 mice, we studied the role of eosinophils in two established mouse models of atherosclerosis.

These experiments revealed that the presence of eosinophils did neither affect biomarkers of LDL oxidation nor atherosclerotic lesion development.

The obtained results show that LDL oxidation and development of atherosclerosis are largely independent of eosinophils or eosinophil-mediated LDL oxidation.UBCS039 mouse

Non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHI) is a pathogen of the human respiratory tract causing the majority of invasive H. influenzae infections. Severe invasive infections such as septicemia and meningitis occur rarely, but the lack of a protecting vaccine and the increasing antibiotic resistance of NTHI impede treatment and emphasize its relevance as a potential meningitis causing pathogen. Meningitis results from pathogens crossing blood-brain barriers and invading the immune privileged central nervous system (CNS). In this study, we addressed the potential of NTHI to enter the brain by invading cells of the choroid plexus (CP) prior to meningeal inflammation to enlighten NTHI pathophysiological mechanisms. A cell culture model of human CP epithelial cells, which form the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB) in vivo, was used to analyze adhesion and invasion by immunofluorescence and electron microscopy. NTHI invade CP cells in vitro in a polar fashion from the blood-facing side. Furthermore, NTHI invasion rates are increased compared to encapsulated HiB and HiF strains. Fimbriae occurrence attenuated adhesion and invasion. Thus, our findings underline the role of the BCSFB as a potential entry port for NTHI into the brain and provide strong evidence for a function of the CP during NTHI invasion into the CNS during the course of meningitis.Regular physical activity (PA) improves cognitive functions, prevents brain atrophy, and delays the onset of cognitive decline, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease. Presently, there are no specific recommendations for PA producing positive effects on brain health and little is known on its mediators. PA affects production and release of several peptides secreted from peripheral and central tissues, targeting receptors located in the central nervous system (CNS). This review will provide a summary of the current knowledge on the association between PA and cognition with a focus on the role of (neuro)peptides. For the review we define peptides as molecules with less than 100 amino acids and exclude myokines. Tachykinins, somatostatin, and opioid peptides were excluded from this review since they were not affected by PA. There is evidence suggesting that PA increases peripheral insulin growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels and elevated serum IGF-1 levels are associated with improved cognitive performance. It is therefore likely that IGF-1 plays a role in PA induced improvement of cognition. Other neuropeptides such as neuropeptide Y (NPY), ghrelin, galanin, and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) could mediate the beneficial effects of PA on cognition, but the current literature regarding these (neuro)peptides is limited. The aim of the study was to investigate the protective role of physical activity (PA) and other health-related bio-psycho components (physical fitness, body composition, body perception and the sense of coherence (SOC)) in body acceptance. We searched for gender differences in those relationships. We investigated 231 adolescents aged 13-16 years from an urban area in Poland. We conducted objective measurements of height, weight, fat% and relative value of minute oxygen consumption. Questionnaires for PA, SOC Body Figure Perception and body acceptance were applied. Linear regression was used for analyzing determinants of body acceptance. We found that more physically active girls reported a less slim ideal vision of their figure (p less then 0.05). Physical fitness is a better predictor of body acceptance than physical activity. In the final model, the sense of coherence, body mass index (BMI), and gender (being a boy) were also predictors of body acceptance (F(6,92) = 13.084, p less then 0.0001). Gender differences were discussed in the present study. Fitness enhancing physical activity should be recommended for adolescents to achieve the protective psychosocial effect especially among girls. Physical activity on a daily basis brings positive results in a more adequate and reasonable body assessment and it can play a protective role in terms of mental wellbeing. Body satisfaction varies between genders and it is a more sensitive issue among girls than boys during adolescence.Aberrant extracellular matrix (ECM) remodelling in muscle, liver and adipose tissue is a key characteristic of obesity and insulin resistance. Despite its emerging importance, the effective ECM targets remain largely undefined due to limitations of current approaches. Here, we developed a novel ECM-specific mass spectrometry-based proteomics technique to characterise the global view of the ECM changes in the skeletal muscle and liver of mice after high fat (HF) diet feeding. We identified distinct signatures of HF-induced protein changes between skeletal muscle and liver where the ECM remodelling was more prominent in the muscle than liver. In particular, most muscle collagen isoforms were increased by HF diet feeding whereas the liver collagens were differentially but moderately affected highlighting a different role of the ECM remodelling in different tissues of obesity. selleck Moreover, we identified a novel association between collagen 24α1 and insulin resistance in the skeletal muscle. Using quantitative gene expression analysis, we extended this association to the white adipose tissue. Importantly, collagen 24α1 mRNA was increased in the visceral adipose tissue, but not the subcutaneous adipose tissue of obese diabetic subjects compared to lean controls, implying a potential pathogenic role of collagen 24α1 in obesity and type 2 diabetes.A series of carbon xerogels doped with cobalt, nickel, and iron have been prepared through the sol-gel method. The doped carbon xerogels were further functionalized with binary and ternary transition metal oxides containing Co, Ni, and Zn oxides by the hydrothermal method. A development in the mesopore volume is achieved for functionalized carbon xerogel doped with iron. However, in the functionalization of carbon xerogel with ternary metal oxides, a reduction in pore diameter and mesopore volume is found. In addition, all functionalized metal oxides/carbon are in the form of 3D nanobundles with different lengths and widths. The prepared samples have been tested as electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in basic medium. All composites showed excellent oxygen reduction reaction activity; the low equivalent series resistance of the Zn-Ni-Co/Co-CX composite was especially remarkable, indicating high electronic conductivity. It has been established that the role of Zn in this type of metal oxides nanobundles-based ORR catalyst is not only positive, but its effect could be enhanced by the presence of Ni.selleck
