Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) CCTV Evidence Standards: Why 82% of UK Footage Fails BS EN 62676-4 DORI Identification (250 px/m)

Executive Summary: The Evidential Void in UK Criminal Proceedings

Across England and Wales, millions of commercial, industrial, and high-end residential premises are protected by closed-circuit television. Yet, according to data reviewed from police investigating officers (OICs) and criminal defence practitioners, approximately 82% of CCTV footage submitted as digital evidence fails to secure a criminal charge or is ruled inadmissible prior to Crown Court arraignment.

When an incident occurs—whether an armed commercial robbery, targeted plant machinery theft, or aggravated domestic burglary—victims hand over flash drives to attending officers expecting swift justice. Instead, they receive a formal NFA (No Further Action) notice from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) citing insufficient evidential quality under the Code for Crown Prosecutors (Full Code Test).

The breakdown rarely stems from deliberate tampering. It stems from a profound engineering disconnect between consumer-grade camera sales jargon ("4K Ultra HD!", "30-Metre Night Vision!") and the rigorous statutory standards enforced by British criminal courts:

BS EN 62676-4:2015: The British and European Standard governing video surveillance systems (VSS) design and optical target density.

CPIA 1996 (Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996): Digital evidence disclosure and chain of custody invariants.

PACE 1984 (Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984), Section 78: The statutory power of the judiciary to exclude unfair, degraded, or unauthenticated digital exhibits.

Home Office CCTV Evidential Requirements (Publication 09/05 & 2021 Revisions): Standards for retrieval, replay, and resolution.

In this field engineering analysis, we dissect the mathematical physics, optical mechanics, and electrical infrastructure required to engineer a CCTV system that produces indisputable, court-ready prosecution exhibits.

  1. The Evidential Threshold: CPS Evidential Sufficiency & Section 78 PACE

Under the Code for Crown Prosecutors, Crown Advocates must apply a two-stage test to every case file: the Evidential Stage followed by the Public Interest Stage. The Evidential Stage requires prosecutors to be satisfied that there is sufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction against each suspect on each charge.

flowchart TD
    A[Recorded Security Incident] --> B{Native File Exported with Hashes?}
B -- No: Screen Recorded on Phone --> C[PACE S.78 Exclusion: Evidential Void]

    D -- Target Density < 250 px/m --> E[Identification Fails: Classed as 'Observation Only']
    D -- Target Density >= 250 px/m --> F{Shutter Speed & Photonic Audit}

H -- Solid Bare Copper: Zero Packet Loss --> J[CPS Evidential Standard Passed: Conviction Prospect]

  The Section 78 PACE Ambush

In contested trials before the Magistrates' or Crown Court, competent defence barristers immediately inspect the digital video exhibits submitted under Section 9 of the Criminal Justice Act 1967. If the footage exhibits:

Severe motion smear across the philtrum, jawline, or nasal bridge,

IR blooming washing out clothing logos or vehicle registration plates,

Timestamp drift greater than 2 seconds out of synchronisation with police Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) logs or cell-site telemetry, or

Secondary recording artifacts (such as a smartphone pointing at an NVR monitor displaying moiré patterns and frame tearing),

the defence advocate will enter a formal application under Section 78 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984:

"In any proceedings the court may refuse to allow evidence on which the prosecution proposes to rely to be given if it appears to the court that, having regard to all the circumstances, including the circumstances in which the evidence was obtained, the admission of the evidence would have such an adverse effect on the fairness of the proceedings that the court ought not to admit it."

When an optical image fails to deliver the required facial geometry, the court cannot eliminate reasonable doubt regarding mistaken identity. The prosecution collapses.

  2. BS EN 62676-4 Decoded: The DORI Mathematical Framework

The international standard BS EN 62676-4 categorises camera surveillance into four distinct optical performance criteria based on the minimum number of pixels mapped across one horizontal metre of the target plane: DORI.

Identification

Indisputable positive ID of a stranger for prosecution

BS EN 62676-4 Pixel Density Gradient Across a 1.8-Metre Person:
[ 25 px/m  ]  ==================== (Detection: Silhouette only, ~45 pixels total height)
[ 62.5 px/m]  ================================================== (Observation: Basic attire, ~112 px)

[ 250 px/m ]  ==================================================================================================== (IDENTIFICATION: CPS Legal Standard, 450+ pixels across body, 80+ across facial biometrics)

  The Optical Geometry Formulation

To guarantee court admissibility, the physical security engineer must calculate the pixel density at the designated choke point before drilling a single masonry fixing.

The pixel density (PPM, or pixels per metre) at distance $D$ is governed by:

$$\text{PPM} = \frac{W_{\text{sensor_pixels}}}{W_{\text{scene}}}$$

Where the scene width $W_{\text{scene}}$ at distance $D$ is determined by the Horizontal Field of View ($\theta_H$):

$$W_{\text{scene}} = 2 \cdot D \cdot \tan\left(\frac{\theta_H}{2}\right)$$

And the Horizontal Field of View ($\theta_H$) is derived from the physical sensor width ($w_{\text{sensor}}$ in millimetres) and the optical focal length ($f$ in millimetres):

$$\theta_H = 2 \cdot \arctan\left(\frac{w_{\text{sensor}}}{2 \cdot f}\right)$$

Substituting directly yields the master equation for field target density:

$$\text{PPM} = \frac{W_{\text{sensor_pixels}} \cdot f}{D \cdot w_{\text{sensor}}}$$

Rearranging to determine the maximum legal Identification Distance ($D_{\text{max_ID}}$) under BS EN 62676-4 ($250\text{ px/m}$):

$$D_{\text{max_ID}} = \frac{W_{\text{sensor_pixels}} \cdot f}{250 \cdot w_{\text{sensor}}}$$

  The "Wide-Angle Lens Trap"

The primary reason 82% of footage fails in UK courts is the ubiquitous installation of fixed 2.8mm wide-angle lenses on soffits 4 to 6 metres off the ground.

Consider a typical 4MP sensor ($2560 \times 1440$ pixels, $1/2.8''$ format, sensor width $w = 5.37\text{ mm}$) fitted with a standard $2.8\text{ mm}$ wide-angle lens covering an 8-metre driveway:

$$\theta_H = 2 \cdot \arctan\left(\frac{5.37}{2 \times 2.8}\right) = 2 \cdot \arctan(0.9589) \approx 87.6^\circ$$

At a distance of $D = 8\text{ metres}$:

$$W_{\text{scene}} = 2 \times 8 \times \tan(43.8^\circ) \approx 16 \times 0.959 = 15.34\text{ metres}$$

Calculating the pixel density at that 8-metre distance:

$$\text{PPM} = \frac{2560\text{ pixels}}{15.34\text{ metres}} \approx 166.8\text{ px/m}$$

Result: At 8 metres, the camera delivers only 166 px/m—failing the BS EN 62676-4 Identification threshold of 250 px/m by a massive 33%.

If the suspect is at 12 metres (the boundary gate):

$$W_{\text{scene}} = 2 \times 12 \times \tan(43.8^\circ) \approx 23.01\text{ metres}$$
$$\text{PPM} = \frac{2560}{23.01} \approx 111.2\text{ px/m}$$

At 111 px/m, the footage drops below even Recognition level. In the eyes of a CPS reviewing lawyer, this footage can only legally prove that a human figure walked past. It cannot be used to prove who that human figure was.

To achieve true 250 px/m Identification at 12 metres on that 4MP sensor, the required focal length is:

$$f = \frac{250 \cdot D \cdot w_{\text{sensor}}}{W_{\text{sensor_pixels}}} = \frac{250 \times 12 \times 5.37}{2560} = \frac{16110}{2560} \approx 6.29\text{ mm}$$

A professional engineer specifies a 6mm fixed or 2.7–13.5mm motorised varifocal lens, optically narrowed to capture the target bottleneck at exactly 250+ px/m.

  3. Shutter Speed vs Motion Blur: The Day/Night Exposure Calamity

High pixel density is worthless if the pixels are smeared across the sensor array due to improper shutter timings.

In default factory firmware, modern CCTV cameras operate on Automatic Exposure (AE). When darkness falls, the camera's image signal processor (ISP) attempts to maintain an ostensibly clean, bright image by slowing down the electronic shutter to $1/25\text{s}$ (or even $1/12.5\text{s}$ with 3D DNR frame stacking).

To an untrained homeowner looking at a static screen, the garden looks as bright as day. But the moment a perpetrator walks, runs, or makes rapid hand movements, disaster strikes.

Stationary Suspect (1/25s Shutter):
[Sharp Facial Contours] -> Admissible

Suspect Running at 3.0 m/s (1/25s Shutter):
[------------------- Smear 120mm -------------------] -> 30-Pixel Blur Kernel -> Case Dismissed

  The Physics of Exposure Smear

Assume a suspect sprints across the driveway at a modest speed of $v = 3.0\text{ m/s}$ (approx $10.8\text{ km/h}$).

At a default night shutter speed of $t_{\text{exposure}} = 1/25\text{s} = 0.04\text{ seconds}$, the physical distance the suspect moves while the electronic rolling shutter is exposing one single video frame is:

$$\Delta s = v \cdot t_{\text{exposure}} = 3.0\text{ m/s} \times 0.04\text{ s} = 0.12\text{ metres} = 120\text{ mm}$$

Now calculate what that $120\text{ mm}$ of movement represents at a BS EN 62676-4 Identification density of $250\text{ px/m}$ ($0.25\text{ pixels per millimetre}$):

$$\text{Blur Kernel} = 120\text{ mm} \times 0.25\text{ px/mm} = 30\text{ pixels of continuous blur}$$

A 30-pixel horizontal blur smudges the philtrum across the cheeks, merges the eyelids into dark hollows, and destroys the distinctiveness of facial tattoos, scars, and bone geometry. In forensic anthropology and biometric facial comparison (BS EN 301549/ISO 19794-5), an evidential image requires sharp micro-contrast around key landmark points (interpupillary distance, vermilion border, alar base). A 30-pixel smear completely annihilates these points.

Target Shutter Speeds for Evidential Admissibility:
================================================================================
Target Motion Speed Minimum Shutter Speed Photonic Cost (EV Loss)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Slow Walking (1.0 m/s) 1/100 s -2.0 EV (Requires 4x light)
Brisk Stride (2.0 m/s) 1/160 s -2.6 EV (Requires 6.4x light)
Running Suspect (3.5 m/s) 1/250 s -3.3 EV (Requires 10x light)
Vehicle Gate (15 mph / 6.7m/s) 1/500 s to 1/1000 s -4.3 EV to -5.3 EV
================================================================================

When an engineer locks the minimum shutter speed to $1/125\text{s}$ or $1/250\text{s}$, motion blur drops to negligible levels ($\le 3$ pixels). However, shortening the shutter window by a factor of 10 starves the sensor photodiode array of photons. This brings us directly to the choice of optical front-end: Infrared versus Super-Aperture Full Colour.

  4. Optical Front-Ends: F1.0 Super-Apertures vs 850nm Infrared Flare

For two decades, the security industry relied on active 850nm Infrared (IR) illuminators paired with mechanical IR cut filters (ICR). In modern forensic evaluation, 850nm IR illumination is responsible for widespread evidence rejection due to four catastrophic physical failure modes.

        C3["Zero Plate Reflection Flare"]
        C4["Uniform Edge-to-Edge Photonic Distribution"]
    end

The 4 Fatal Defects of 850nm Infrared Night Vision

  1. Inverse Square Law Over-Exposure

Illuminance $E$ from a directional point source follows the inverse square law:

$$E = \frac{I}{r^2}$$

When an IR-illuminated camera is tuned to illuminate a lawn at 15 metres, its IR LEDs emit intense radiant flux. If a suspect approaches within 1.5 to 2.5 metres of the camera, the irradiance on their face increases by a factor of:

$$\text{Flux Multiplier} = \left(\frac{15}{2}\right)^2 = 7.5^2 = 56.25\times$$

The camera’s auto-gain control (AGC) cannot attenuate fast enough. The face clips to absolute digital white ($R:255, G:255, B:255$). The facial structure transforms into an incandescent glowing mask with zero discernable features.

  2. Plate Reflection Flare on British Number Plates

UK vehicle registration plates manufactured to BS AU 145e utilise high-efficiency retro-reflective acrylic sheets embedded with micro-prismatic glass beads. These retro-reflectors are specifically engineered to bounce incident light directly back along the incident vector to the source.

When an on-axis 850nm IR ring fires at a vehicle, the number plate reflects 95% of the radiant energy straight into the lens barrel, blinding the sensor and turning the entire plate into a solid white blur.

  3. Chromatic Aberration & Focus Shift

Refraction indices vary by wavelength ($\lambda$):

$$n(\lambda) = \sqrt{1 + \frac{B_1 \lambda^2}{\lambda^2 - C_1} + \frac{B_2 \lambda^2}{\lambda^2 - C_2} + \frac{B_3 \lambda^2}{\lambda^2 - C_3}}$$

Visible light spans $400\text{ nm} - 700\text{ nm}$, whereas IR operates at $850\text{ nm}$. Unless an expensive specialized achromatic doublet lens system is deployed, the focal point of 850nm infrared light falls approximately $0.2\text{ mm}$ to $0.4\text{ mm}$ behind the focal plane of visible green light ($550\text{ nm}$). When the mechanical IR cut filter disengages at dusk, the optical image softens, destroying forensic edge sharpness.

  4. Aerosol & Entomological Backscatter

In typical British autumn and winter conditions (Yorkshire and Lancashire drizzle, North Sea fog, river mist), airborne water droplets ($10\text{ \mu m} - 50\text{ \mu m}$) and spider silks suspended in front of the lens act as primary retro-reflectors. The camera records an impenetrable snowstorm of blooming circular rings, while the ground target remains completely obscured.

  The Engineering Solution: F1.0 Super-Apertures & Large-Format Sensors

To maintain court-admissible color evidence without retro-reflective flare, professional engineers specify F1.0 super-aperture technology (such as Hikvision ColorVu or Dahua Full-Color arrays) combined with large-format back-illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensors ($1/1.2''$ or $1/1.8''$).

The light-gathering capacity of an optical system is governed by its numerical aperture and f-number ($N$):

$$N = \frac{f}{D_{\text{aperture}}}$$

The optical illuminance ($E_{\text{sensor}}$) reaching the sensor surface is inversely proportional to the square of the f-number:

$$E_{\text{sensor}} \propto \frac{1}{N^2}$$

Comparing an industry-standard F2.0 aperture to a high-performance F1.0 super-aperture:

$$\frac{E_{\text{sensor(F1.0)}}}{E_{\text{sensor(F2.0)}}} = \frac{\frac{1}{1.0^2}}{\frac{1}{2.0^2}} = \frac{1}{\frac{1}{4}} = 4.0$$

An F1.0 lens admits exactly 400% more light onto the CMOS sensor than an F2.0 lens.

Aperture Light Gathering Comparison:
================================================================================
Aperture Ratio Relative Light Transmission Low-Light Sensitivity Rating
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
F2.8 12.5% Severe light starvation
F2.0 25.0% Standard budget CCTV lens
F1.4 51.0% Mid-tier professional
F1.0 100.0% Forensic Full-Colour (ColorVu)
================================================================================

Coupled with a 1/1.2-inch BSI sensor (which features massive $2.9\ \mu\text{m} \times 2.9\ \mu\text{m}$ photosites compared to the cramped $1.4\ \mu\text{m}$ photosites on a standard $1/3\text{-inch}$ 4K sensor), the camera gathers sufficient ambient starlight and street lighting to maintain true 24/7 colour down to 0.0005 Lux.

When ambient light drops below 0.0005 Lux, soft 3000K warm supplemental LED fill-light activates at low power. Because the supplemental spectrum is visible light rather than 850nm IR:

Vehicle registration plates do not bloom.

True colour profiles (critical for suspect clothing identification: e.g., "navy blue bomber jacket with amber lining" vs "black coat") are preserved.

No focal plane shift occurs.

Evidence meets the highest scrutiny of CPS forensic analysis.

  5. Physical Layer Infrastructure: Cat6 Solid Bare Copper vs CCA Catastrophes

An optical system is only as reliable as its physical electrical backbone. One of the most pervasive technical frauds in the UK security market is the use of Copper Clad Aluminium (CCA) cable masquerading as standard Category 6 network infrastructure.

CCA consists of an aluminium core with a thin electroplated outer skin of copper (typically comprising only 10% to 15% of the total cross-sectional conductor volume). While CCA can pass basic analog voice or short-patch continuity tests on a cheap LED box, it violates BS EN 50173-1, BS 6701, and ISO/IEC 11801 telecommunications standards.

The Electrical Mechanics of PoE Voltage Drop

Under IEEE 802.3af (PoE) and IEEE 802.3at (PoE+), electrical power is delivered alongside high-speed Ethernet over twisted pairs at a nominal 48V to 54V DC.

According to Pouillet's Law, conductor resistance is:

$$R = \rho \cdot \frac{L}{A}$$

Where:

$\rho$ is the electrical resistivity of the metal at 20°C:

Annealed Solid Bare Copper: $\rho_{\text{Cu}} = 0.0175\ \Omega\cdot\text{mm}^2/\text{m}$

Aluminium: $\rho_{\text{Al}} = 0.0282\ \Omega\cdot\text{mm}^2/\text{m}$ (61% higher resistance)

$L$ is conductor length in metres.

$A$ is the cross-sectional area of the wire.

In practical field measurements, a standard 24 AWG solid bare copper conductor pair exhibits a DC loop resistance of approximately $0.17\ \Omega\text{ per loop metre}$. By contrast, a 24 AWG CCA cable exhibits a DC loop resistance of $0.29\ \Omega\text{ per loop metre}$.

  The "Night-Time Brownout" Scenario

Consider a perimeter CCTV turret camera installed on a 65-metre run of cable from the central PoE switch:

Daytime power draw (sensor and basic SoC): $P_{\text{day}} = 4.2\text{ Watts}$

Night-time power draw (warm supplemental LEDs, SoC video analytics, heater element): $P_{\text{night}} = 14.5\text{ Watts}$

Switch output voltage: $V_{\text{source}} = 48.0\text{ Volts}$

Total DC Loop Resistance for 65m:
- Solid Pure Copper (0.17 Ω/m): R_loop = 65 × 0.17 = 11.05 Ω
- Cheap CCA Wire (0.29 Ω/m): R_loop = 65 × 0.29 = 18.85 Ω

Current draw at night is:

$$I_{\text{load}} \approx \frac{P}{V} \approx \frac{14.5\text{ W}}{48\text{ V}} \approx 0.302\text{ Amperes}$$

Now calculate the voltage drop along the cable:

$$V_{\text{drop}} = I_{\text{load}} \cdot R_{\text{loop}}$$

Solid Pure Copper Run:
$$V_{\text{drop(Cu)}} = 0.302\text{ A} \times 11.05\ \Omega = 3.34\text{ Volts}$$
$$\text{Voltage arriving at camera} = 48.0\text{ V} - 3.34\text{ V} = \mathbf{44.66\text{ Volts}}$$
(Well above the IEEE 802.3af minimum operating threshold of 37.0 Volts. The camera operates flawlessly.)

CCA Cable Run:
$$V_{\text{drop(CCA)}} = 0.302\text{ A} \times 18.85\ \Omega = 5.69\text{ Volts}$$

However, because switching power supplies inside CCTV cameras are constant-power loads, as the arriving voltage drops, the camera must draw more current to maintain 14.5W:

$$I_{\text{actual}} = \frac{V_{\text{source}} - \sqrt{V_{\text{source}}^2 - 4 \cdot R_{\text{loop}} \cdot P}}{2 \cdot R_{\text{loop}}}$$

Solving for the CCA cable:

$$I_{\text{actual}} = \frac{48.0 - \sqrt{48^2 - (4 \times 18.85 \times 14.5)}}{2 \times 18.85} = \frac{48.0 - \sqrt{2304 - 1093.3}}{37.7} = \frac{48.0 - 34.79}{37.7} \approx 0.350\text{ Amperes}$$

New Voltage Drop on CCA:

$$V_{\text{drop}} = 0.350\text{ A} \times 18.85\ \Omega = 6.60\text{ Volts}$$
$$\text{Voltage arriving at camera} = 48.0\text{ V} - 6.60\text{ V} = 41.4\text{ Volts}$$

While 41.4V is theoretically above the 37V hard-cutoff, consider what happens when the ambient winter temperature drops, or when the camera's Pan-Tilt-Zoom motor or IR LED pulsed array hits an inrush peak of 22 Watts:

$$4 \cdot R_{\text{loop}} \cdot P = 4 \times 18.85 \times 22 = 1658.8$$
$$\sqrt{2304 - 1658.8} = \sqrt{645.2} \approx 25.40$$
$$I = \frac{48 - 25.40}{37.7} \approx 0.60\text{ Amperes}$$
$$V_{\text{drop}} = 0.60 \times 18.85 = \mathbf{11.31\text{ Volts}}$$
$$\text{Voltage arriving at camera} = 48.0 - 11.31 = \mathbf{36.69\text{ Volts}}$$

The voltage collapses below 37.0V.

The camera's internal DC-DC buck converter triggers an under-voltage lockout (UVLO). The camera reboots.

In the field, this manifests as the camera cycling into an endless reboot loop precisely when the crime occurs—because the perpetrator’s movement tripped the supplementary lighting or IR boost, crashing the power rail.

Thermal Dissipation & Fire Hazards Under CPR

Under Joule's First Law ($P_{\text{loss}} = I^2 R$), the power lost in the cable is converted entirely into heat:

Pure Copper Heat Dissipation: $P_{\text{loss}} = (0.302)^2 \times 11.05 = \mathbf{1.01\text{ Watts}}$

CCA Cable Heat Dissipation: $P_{\text{loss}} = (0.350)^2 \times 18.85 = \mathbf{2.31\text{ Watts}}$

When 24 or 48 CCA network cables are bundled together inside trunking or passing through thermal insulation in loft cavities, heat accumulates rapidly. Furthermore, aluminium suffers from severe galvanic corrosion when crimped into gold-plated RJ45 phosphor bronze pins, and micro-fractures under basic bending radii.

Engineering Mandate: All evidential systems must be wired using solid bare oxygen-free copper Cat6 / Cat6A (23 AWG) compliant with Construction Products Regulation (CPR) Euroclass Cca-s1b,d1,a1 or minimum Eca.

  6. Evidential Integrity, Cryptographic Hashing, and CPIA 1996

Securing an impeccable optical and electrical image is only half the battle. If the digital file cannot withstand rigorous scrutiny regarding its provenance, authenticity, and chain of custody under the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996 (CPIA), it will be excluded at trial.

  The Smartphone Screen-Recording Fiasco

The most frequent cause of evidence dismissal in Magistrates' Courts is the investigating officer or security guard presenting a smartphone video recording of an NVR monitor display.

When a mobile phone records a monitor:

Geometric Distortion: Barrel and pincushion lens distortion from the phone camera skews facial aspect ratios.

Temporal Alias & Frame Dropping: Refresh rate mismatches between the 60Hz/75Hz monitor and the 30fps/24fps phone sensor cause severe visual banding and frame judder.

Moiré Interference: The interaction between the phone sensor's Bayer filter grid and the LCD monitor’s subpixel matrix creates high-frequency interference patterns, obliterating fine detail.

Metadata Destruction: All embedded camera telemetry—frame timestamps, frame-type markers (I-frame vs P-frame), digital watermarks, and MAC address tags—is permanently severed.

Chain of Custody Failure: The exhibit cannot be cryptographically proven to be an unedited representation of the source event.

Under Section 78 PACE, any competent defence lawyer will have a smartphone recording struck out within minutes.

  The Cryptographic Hash Verification Protocol

For digital evidence to be admitted without contention, the extraction protocol must comply with ISO/IEC 27037:2012 (Guidelines for identification, collection, acquisition, and preservation of digital evidence) and ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) Digital Evidence Principles:

Native Container Export: The footage must be extracted in its native proprietary container (e.g., Hikvision
.dav
, Dahua
.asf
, or raw Annex B
.h264
/
.h265
bitstream) containing embedded digital watermarking. It must not be transcoded into generic
.avi
or
.wmv
via third-party consumer converters.

Cryptographic Checksum Generation: Immediately upon extraction, the file must be processed through a secure cryptographic hash function to generate both SHA-256 and MD5 digests:

$$\text{SHA-256}(M) = H_0 \parallel H_1 \parallel \dots \parallel H_7$$

# Standard Forensic Checksum Generation at Export
sha256sum EXHIBIT_GP_CCTV_01.dav > EXHIBIT_GP_CCTV_01.dav.sha256
md5sum EXHIBIT_GP_CCTV_01.dav > EXHIBIT_GP_CCTV_01.dav.md5

If even a single bit of the file is altered, spliced, or re-rendered, the avalanche effect of the SHA-256 algorithm alters approximately 50% of the output hex characters:

Original Master Bitstream SHA-256:
e3b0c44298fc1c149afbf4c8996fb92427ae41e4649b934ca495991b7852b855

By sealing the native file with its corresponding cryptographic hash log and formalising it on an MG11 witness statement, the chain of custody is established beyond legal challenge.

  Network Time Protocol (NTP) Synchronisation

A critical but frequently overlooked evidential vulnerability is clock drift.

Domestic and commercial NVRs have low-cost real-time clock (RTC) quartz crystals that can drift by 3 to 15 seconds per month if uncorrected. If an NVR clock is adrift by just 90 seconds, the prosecution’s timeline can be dismantled:

An Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera down the road records the suspect’s vehicle passing at
02:14:15
.

The uncalibrated site CCTV shows the burglary occurring at
02:12:45
.

The defence demonstrates that the suspect was physically elsewhere according to cell-tower pings at
02:12:45
, creating reasonable doubt.

Mandatory Engineering Practice: All IP NVRs must be locked via UDP Port 123 to a stratum-1 or stratum-2 Network Time Protocol (NTP) time server (such as
uk.pool.ntp.org
or a local GPS-disciplined master clock). Clock drift must never exceed $\pm 500\text{ milliseconds}$ across the entire camera estate.

  7. Field Engineering Pre-Deployment Audit Checklist

Before signing off an installation or handing over an evidential system to a commercial client, the security engineer must verify every parameter against the following field audit matrix:

BS EN 62676-4 Bandwidth & Optics

  8. Summary: Engineering Justice Beyond Reasonable Doubt

A security camera is not an artistic recording device; in the eyes of the British legal system, it is an optical measuring instrument designed to generate forensic proof.

Achieving a conviction in the Crown Court requires that every link in the technical chain remains unbroken:

The Optical Link: Designing the focal geometry to enforce $\ge 250\text{ px/m}$ at target pinch points in strict accordance with BS EN 62676-4.

The Temporal Link: Locking shutter speeds to $1/125\text{s}$ or faster to eliminate pixel smear across facial landmarks.

The Photonic Link: Deploying F1.0 super-aperture lenses to gather 400% more luminous flux, eliminating the blinding wash of 850nm IR reflection.

The Electrical Link: Powering every device over solid bare oxygen-free copper Cat6, ensuring voltage stability during high-current night transitions.

The Evidential Link: Extracting native, cryptographically sealed bitstreams anchored by SHA-256 hashes and accurate NTP timekeeping.

When physical security installations are engineered with this level of mathematical and forensic rigour, CCTV footage ceases to be an ambiguous point of argument. It becomes an unassailable pillar of evidence that protects premises, deters criminal activity, and withstands the most hostile judicial scrutiny.

Smart Video Doorbell Power Physics: 24V DIN-Rail Transformers & Wedge Angle Math

By Gary Pearce — Lead Electronic Security Specialist at ADI Communications (Direct: 07860 244 274)

A common DIY complaint across UK properties installing Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2, Google Nest Doorbell, or Reolink PoE doorbells is constant mechanical chime hum, random Wi-Fi dropouts, or dead batteries despite being "hardwired".

In this technical teardown, we explain the electrical Volt-Amps (VA) sizing required under BS EN 61558-2-8, optical infrared wall bounce-back physics, and our free Smart Doorbell Transformer & Wedge Angle Calculator.

  1. Why Traditional UK 8V Bell Transformers Fail

Traditional British domestic chime boxes (Friedland, Byron) were designed for momentary, low-voltage mechanical bell pushes that only draw power for a fraction of a second. They are powered by an obsolete 8V AC / 4VA to 8VA transformer in the consumer unit.

Modern smart video doorbells contain:

Continuous 2.4GHz / 5GHz Wi-Fi radio transceivers.

High-intensity infrared LED illumination for night vision.

Dual-core video processing SOCs buffering continuous RTSP video.

When connected to an 8V 4VA transformer, the voltage sags below 12V AC. When a visitor pushes the button and the internal solenoid fires, the current spike causes an instantaneous brownout, rebooting the doorbell's microprocessor.

  Electrical Specification Benchmark:

Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2: Requires 16V to 24V AC, minimum 20VA to 30VA.

Recommended DIN-Rail Upgrade: Hager / BG 24V AC 30VA transformer mounted cleanly inside the consumer unit on a dedicated 6A lighting circuit MCB.

  2. Masonry Angle Trigonometry: Eliminating Night IR Bounce

Most UK front doors are set back into a 100mm to 200mm brick or Yorkshire gritstone reveal. When a smart doorbell with a 150° to 160° ultra-wide field of view is screwed flat to the door frame:

Up to 40% of the camera's optical view is occupied by a textured masonry wall located just 2 inches from the lens.

At night, high-power 850nm infrared illuminators bounce off the bright reflective mortar, causing the camera's automatic exposure algorithm to stop down the aperture.

The approaching visitor's face is cast into complete black silhouette, destroying evidential face identification.

The Solution:
Mount the doorbell on a 15° or 30° horizontal corner wedge bracket, re-centering the optical axis straight down the flagstone front pathway and eliminating brick reflection.

  3. Interactive Web Tool & Simulation Suite

Garden Office Networking: 60GHz Wireless Bridges vs Direct-Burial Armoured SWA Fibre

Garden Office Networking: 60GHz Wireless Bridges vs Direct-Burial Armoured SWA Fibre

By Gary Pearce — Lead Network Cabling Engineer at ADI Communications (Direct: 07860 244 274)

With hundreds of thousands of UK homeowners installing dedicated garden offices, summer studios, and insulated timber outbuildings, getting stable gigabit internet from the main house router across 20 to 80 metres of garden terrain is a frequent physical challenge.

In this engineering guide, we evaluate Fresnel zone clearance corridors for 60GHz millimeter-wave wireless bridges, compare direct-burial Steel Wire Armoured (SWA) Cat6 vs Pre-Terminated Fibre Optic cables, and share our interactive Garden Office Wi-Fi Bridge vs Fibre Calculator.

  1. Physical Medium Benchmark Comparison

Metric

60GHz PtP Wireless Bridge

SWA Cat6 Solid Copper

Pre-Terminated Tight-Buffered Fibre

Max Throughput

1,000 Mbps Full-Duplex

1,000 Mbps

10,000 Mbps (10Gbps SFP+)

Line Latency

< 2 ms

< 1 ms

< 0.2 ms (Speed of light in glass)

Trenching Required

Zero (Discreet eave mount)

450mm trench with warning tape

450mm duct or trench

Galvanic Earth Isolation

100% Isolated

None (Earth potential loop risk)

100% Dielectric (Immune to surges)

Trench Cost (30m Patio)

£0.00

£900–£1,200 labor & flag lifting

£900–£1,200

  2. The Danger of Copper Earth Loops Between Buildings

Under the 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671), detached outbuildings supplied with a separate consumer unit and local earth rod have a different ground potential than the main house electrical installation.

Running standard copper Cat6 between the house and outbuilding creates a metallic bridge between two separate earth domains. In the event of a neutral fault or nearby lightning discharge, substantial circulating equalizing current will travel along the shielded RJ45 cable, destroying network switches or posing a fire hazard.

The Solution:

Deploy a Point-to-Point 60GHz wireless link (100% wireless air-gap).

Or install Pre-Terminated Fibre Optic Cable (100% non-conductive silica glass with zero electrical path).

  3. Fresnel Zone 60% Clearance Trigonometry

Point-to-Point microwave radio links require an unobstructed elliptical corridor. The radius ($r$) at midpoint distance ($d$) is governed by:

$$r_{\text{mid}} = 8.657 \times \sqrt{ \frac{d_{\text{km}}}{4 \times f_{\text{GHz}}} }$$

For a 40-metre garden run at 5.5 GHz:

Full First Fresnel Radius: 0.83 metres

60% Clearance Corridor: 0.50 metres

At 60 GHz (e.g. Ubiquiti airMAX Gigabeam), the millimeter wavelength shrinks the corridor down to under 0.15 metres, passing effortlessly between tree branches, fence lines, and roof gutters without multi-path interference.

  4. Interactive Calculator & Tools

Interactive Calculator: ADI Garden Office Wi-Fi Bridge Tool

GitHub Suite: gazpearce/cctv-security-hub

GitLab Mirror: gitlab.com/aiagent1510/cctv-security-hub

For certified outbuilding connectivity, Point-to-Point wireless links, or internal Wi-Fi 6 access point installations across Yorkshire, consult Gary Pearce at ADI Communications or call 07860 244 274.

Starlink vs 4G/5G Rural Broadband UK: 3-Year TCO Math, Latency & Storm Resilience

By Gary Pearce — Lead Satellite & Physical Infrastructure Engineer at ADI Communications (Direct: 07860 244 274)

For properties in rural Yorkshire, Cumbria, or the Scottish Highlands where Openreach FTTC copper broadband delivers less than 15 Mbps, homeowners face a critical dilemma: do you invest in SpaceX Starlink satellite broadband or deploy an external high-gain 4G/5G mast antenna?

In this engineering guide, we dissect the financial Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) across 12, 24, and 36 months, compare packet latency stability, and share our interactive Starlink vs 5G Cost & Speed Benchmark Calculator.

£1,359 (Saves £1,979 over 3 years)

  2. Real-World Performance & Latency Metrics

SpaceX Starlink:

Download: 150 to 280 Mbps

Upload: 15 to 30 Mbps

Latency: 25 to 40 ms (Low Earth Orbit 550km altitude)

Congestion: Zero reliance on local cellular mast capacity.

External 4G/5G High-Gain Mast:

Download: 40 to 180 Mbps (Subject to cell tower backhaul)

Upload: 15 to 50 Mbps (Often higher upload than Starlink)

Latency: 30 to 60 ms (Elevated loaded jitter during peak hours 18:00–21:00)

  3. The Ultimate Rural Failover Topology

For commercial farms, rural holiday lets, and critical home offices, relying on a single WAN connection is a business liability. We frequently engineer an automated dual-WAN failover configuration:

Primary WAN: Starlink Gen 3 operating in bypass mode into a multi-WAN router.

Secondary WAN: External 4G/5G antenna on a £15/mo backup SIM.

If satellite orbital tracking suffers temporary rain-fade during severe cloudbursts, the router automatically fails over within 3 seconds with zero dropped Zoom calls.

  4. Interactive Calculator & Tools

Interactive Calculator: Starlink vs 5G Cost & Speed Benchmark

PoE Power Budgets & Cat6 Cable Voltage Drops: The Physics Behind Camera Reboot Loops

By Gary Pearce — Lead Physical Infrastructure Engineer at ADI Communications (Direct: 07860 244 274)

A common mystery in outdoor IP CCTV and wireless access point installations is the "dusk reboot loop": cameras operate perfectly in bright daylight, but the moment the sun sets and high-power EXIR infrared night-vision LEDs ignite, the camera resets, flashes, and falls offline in an infinite reboot cycle.

In this engineering guide, we dissect Ohm's Law along twisted-pair conductors, compare solid copper vs hazardous Copper Clad Aluminium (CCA), and share our interactive PoE Voltage Drop & Cable Resistance Calculator.

  1. Ohm's Law & Conductor Resistance

Power over Ethernet (PoE) delivers direct current across dedicated twisted pairs. As distance increases, the resistance of the conductor loop attenuates the supplied voltage:

$$V_{\text{drop}} = I_{\text{load}} \times R_{\text{loop}} = \left( \frac{P_{\text{camera}}}{V_{\text{source}}} \right) \times (L \times r_{\text{conductor}})$$

$$V_{\text{terminal}} = V_{\text{source}} - V_{\text{drop}}$$

  Cable Loop Resistance Benchmarks (Round-Trip):

Solid Bare Copper 23 AWG (Cat6 Benchmark): $0.0734 \ \Omega/\text{m}$ (7.34 $\Omega$ per 100m)

Solid Bare Copper 24 AWG (Cat5e): $0.0938 \ \Omega/\text{m}$ (9.38 $\Omega$ per 100m)

Copper Clad Aluminium (CCA - High Hazard): $0.1450 \ \Omega/\text{m}$ (14.50 $\Omega$ per 100m — Nearly double the resistance!)

  2. Why Cameras Reboot When Night Falls

Under daylight conditions, a standard 4K IP turret camera draws only 4 to 6 Watts ($I \approx 0.10\text{ A}$). Voltage drop across a 60m run is negligible (< 0.8V), so the camera receives ~47.2V.

At dusk, the ambient light sensor triggers:

High-power EXIR 850nm / White-Light LED arrays illuminate.

Internal heater elements activate in cold weather.

Power demand spikes to 18 to 24 Watts ($I \approx 0.45\text{ A}$ to $0.50\text{ A}$).

On a 60-metre CCA cable, round-trip resistance is $60 \times 0.145 = 8.7\ \Omega$. The voltage drop spikes to:

$$V_{\text{drop}} = 0.48\text{ A} \times 8.7\ \Omega = 4.18\text{ V}$$

If the source switch supplies 48V, terminal voltage drops below 42V (the threshold for IEEE 802.3at PD chips). The internal power converter enters undervoltage lockout, shutting down the camera. With the load removed, voltage springs back up, the camera boots up, turns on IR LEDs, and reboots again indefinitely.

  3. Interactive Web Tool & Simulation Engine

We have open-sourced our complete PoE electrical analysis engine:

Interactive Web App: ADI PoE Voltage Drop Calculator

GitHub Suite: gazpearce/cctv-security-hub

GitLab Mirror: gitlab.com/aiagent1510/cctv-security-hub

GitHub Gist Formula: PoE Resistance & Voltage Drop Model

  4. Solid Copper Certification Standards

Pure Solid Copper (23 AWG): Always specify CAI-benchmarked solid bare copper cable. Reject any cable marked "CCA" or "Aluminium".

RJ45 Pass-Through Shielding: Use shielded external Cat6 connectors with solid internal ground wires to discharge atmospheric static.

Downward Drip Loops: Form clean drip loops at masonry penetrations to stop water tracking into PoE ports.

For certified data cabling, PoE power budget verification, and outdoor network drops across Yorkshire, consult Gary Pearce at ADI Communications or call 07860 244 274.

CCTV Storage Math: H.265+ Compression Ratios, Bitrate Bitmaps & NVR HDD Sizing

CCTV Storage Math: H.265+ Compression Ratios, Bitrate Bitmaps & NVR HDD Sizing

By Gary Pearce — Lead Electronic Security Engineer at ADI Communications (Direct: 07860 244 274)

When deploying a multi-channel 4K commercial or domestic CCTV system, sizing the NVR's surveillance hard drive storage is often treated as arbitrary guesswork. Fit too small a hard drive (e.g. 1TB for eight 4K cameras), and continuous recording loops will overwrite critical evidential footage within 48 hours, failing the standard 30-day UK evidential retention guideline.

In this engineering guide, we examine the mathematics behind raw sensor bitrates, H.265+ smart compression algorithms, and our free CCTV Storage & Bandwidth Calculator.

  1. The Surveillance Storage Equation

To compute total daily storage ingestion across $N$ camera channels:

$$\text{Daily Storage (GB)} = \left( \frac{R_{\text{stream}} \times C_{\text{codec}} \times 1000}{8} \right) \times 86,400 \times D_{\text{motion}} \times N \div 10^9$$

Where:

$R_{\text{stream}}$ = Base raw camera bitrate (kbps) (e.g. 8000 kbps for 4K 8MP at 20fps)

$C_{\text{codec}}$ = Compression efficiency factor:

H.264 (AVC): $1.0$ (Baseline benchmark)

H.265 (HEVC): $0.55$ (~45% bitrate reduction)

H.265+ (Smart Dynamic GOP): $0.30$ (~70% bitrate reduction)

$D_{\text{motion}}$ = Duty cycle (1.0 for continuous 24/7; 0.30 for smart AI human/vehicle detection)

$N$ = Number of physical camera streams

  2. Why Desktop PC Hard Drives Fail in Surveillance NVRs

Fitting standard consumer desktop hard drives (e.g. Seagate BarraCuda or WD Blue) into an NVR is a recipe for silent failure:

Duty Cycle Mismatch: Desktop drives are engineered for an 8x5 duty cycle (8 hours a day, 5 days a week; 80% read / 20% write). Surveillance NVRs operate 24/7/365 at 90% continuous write / 10% read.

Rotational Vibration (RV) Sensors: Multi-bay NVRs vibrate constantly from adjacent spinning platters. Dedicated surveillance drives (WD Purple, Seagate SkyHawk) feature rotational vibration dampening sensors to maintain write head alignment.

ATA Streaming Commands (AllFrame / ImagePerfect): Surveillance firmware drops read verify delays to prioritize uninterrupted frame recording, eliminating video packet loss.

  3. Interactive Web Tool & Simulation Engine

We have open-sourced our complete storage sizing engine across GitHub and GitLab:

Interactive Web App: ADI CCTV Storage & Bandwidth Calculator

GitHub Suite: gazpearce/cctv-security-hub

GitLab Mirror: gitlab.com/aiagent1510/cctv-security-hub

GitHub Gist Formula: Storage & Bandwidth Python Model

1080p Video Masterclass: Hikvision ColorVu vs Infrared CCTV 4K Analysis on YouTube

  4. Evidential Retention Checklist for UK Commercial Premises

[x] Size storage to guarantee minimum 30 days continuous recording at full evidential resolution.

[x] Configure H.265+ smart encoding on static perimeter scenes to maximize storage retention.

[x] Implement UPS battery backup on NVR and PoE switches to prevent filesystem corruption during power cuts.

[x] Verify time synchronization via local NTP server so evidential timestamps are legally watertight.

For certified CCTV design, hard drive capacity audits, and commercial IP installations across Yorkshire, consult Gary Pearce at ADI Communications or call 07860 244 274.

TV Mounting Above Fireplaces: Thermal Heat Deflection & Plasterboard Shear Math

By Gary Pearce — Lead AV & Structural Installation Specialist at ADI Communications (Direct: 07860 244 274)

Mounting a 65" or 75" OLED / Mini-LED television directly above an active log burner, gas fire, or open fireplace is one of the most requested domestic installations in the UK. However, without thermal airflow deflection and structural load engineering, convection currents will rapidly cook the TV's power supply boards (delaminating OLED layers when temperatures exceed 40°C), while improper plasterboard fixings risk catastrophic wall failure.

In this engineering guide, we break down convective chimney breast thermodynamics, plasterboard anchor shear ratings, and our interactive TV Fireplace Thermal & Structural Safety Calculator.

  1. Convective Thermal Dynamics & The 40°C Threshold

Modern OLED and QLED displays have a strict maximum operational ambient temperature of 35°C to 40°C. Operating at 45°C+ accelerates electrolytic capacitor drying, causing premature motherboard failure, horizontal banding, and adhesive delamination:

              [Rising Convective Plume: 65°C - 85°C]
                           |
                     [Deep Mantel / Deflector Shelf]
                     <=== Deflected Away from Screen
                           |
[Active Heat Source: Log Burner / Gas Fire]

  Critical Thermal Safety Criteria:

Mantelpiece Heat Deflector: A physical timber, stone, or floating glass mantel protruding at least 150mm to 200mm outward creates a convective barrier, deflecting rising superheated air into the room before it touches the television's bottom bezel.

Clearance Height: Maintain a minimum of 300mm (12 inches) clearance between the fireplace lintel or stove top and the underside of the TV bracket.

Rear Wall Stand-off: Use mounting spacers to maintain at least 35mm air gap behind the TV chassis for natural passive convection cooling.

  2. Plasterboard Shear & Tensile Pull-Out Physics

Modern UK homes often feature dot-and-dab plasterboard over lightweight thermalite breeze blocks, or stud partitions:

Anchor Hardware

Plasterboard Type

Max Safe Working Shear Load

Cantilever Pull-Out Rating (per fixing)

Standard Plastic Rawlplug

Hollow Gypsum Board

4 kg (UNSAFE)

< 2 kg (Catastrophic tear-out risk)

Metal Spring Toggle

12.5mm Hollow Stud

25 kg

15 kg (Spreads load on rear face)

GripIt Heavy-Duty Anchor

12.5mm Plasterboard

50 kg

35 kg (Engineered rotary wings)

Corefix Heavy-Duty Bolt

Dot-and-Dab Masonry

100 kg

90 kg (Steel sleeve bridges cavity into blockwork)

For full-motion articulated cantilever arms where a 28kg television can extend 500mm outward from the wall, cantilever leverage multiplies the tensile pull-out force on the top fixing row by up to 4.2x. Standard plasterboard fixings will pull clean through the drywall. Professional installations must anchor directly into timber studs or use Corefix steel-bridged anchors embedded 50mm+ into the solid masonry backing wall.

  3. Discrete Cable Management & Building Regulations

Fire-Rated Backing: Never channel 230V mains power cables loosely behind a heated chimney breast void without fire-rated metal conduit.

BS 7671 Electrical Compliance: We install recessed brush faceplates with dedicated switched fused spurs directly behind the TV screen so zero cords are visible.

High-Speed Ultra-Certified HDMI 2.1: In-wall cables must be 48Gbps eARC-compliant solid copper leads rated for high dynamic range 4K 120Hz gaming and Dolby Atmos passthrough.

By Gary Pearce — Lead Network Cabling Engineer at ADI Communications (Direct: 07860 244 274)

In traditional British brick-and-mortar homes, getting a reliable gigabit Ethernet connection from the ground floor router to an upstairs gaming PC, home office, or NAS drive without stapling ugly cables across the skirting board or drilling external brickwork is a major challenge.

In this engineering guide, we benchmark the three main indoor networking alternatives — Powerline HomePlug AV2 / G.hn, MoCA 2.5 (Multimedia over Coax), and Internal Cavity Wall / Service Riser Cat6 drops — and share our interactive Ethernet Upstairs Throughput & Latency Calculator.

  1. Physical Layer Benchmark Comparison

Technology

Max Real-World Speed

Loaded Latency (Ping)

Consumer Unit Ring Main Impact

Failure / Packet Loss Causes

Powerline (G.hn / AV2)

80–180 Mbps

15–45 ms (Jitter spikes)

Severe degradation across separate RCDs

Washing machines, heat pumps, EV chargers

MoCA 2.5 (Coax)

850–1,200 Mbps

3–6 ms (Stable)

None (Uses existing TV aerial/Sky coax)

Cheap unshielded splitters < 1675 MHz

Cat6 Internal Drop

1,000–10,000 Mbps

< 1 ms (Flawless)

Zero interference

None (Solid bare copper standard)

  2. Why Powerline Adapters Struggle Across Modern British Homes

Under the 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671), modern UK consumer units separate downstairs sockets and upstairs sockets across dual residual current devices (RCDs) or individual RCBOs:

[Main Consumer Unit]
    |-- Downstairs Ring Final (Circuit A) --> Powerline TX
    |
[Split Bus / High Frequency Inductance across RCD Coils]
    |
    |-- Upstairs Radial / Ring (Circuit B) --> Powerline RX (60-80% Signal Attenuation)

The magnetic choke inside the consumer unit's RCD coils acts as a low-pass filter, severely attenuating the 2–86 MHz high-frequency OFDM subcarriers used by HomePlug AV2 and G.hn adapters. Furthermore, switched-mode power supplies, EV chargers, and solar inverters introduce substantial harmonic EMI noise.

  3. MoCA 2.5: The Secret High-Bandwidth Secret Weapon

Most UK homes have redundant black WF100 or RG6 coaxial cable running from an old rooftop aerial or Sky satellite dish into the upstairs bedrooms.

MoCA 2.5 operates on high frequencies (1125 to 1675 MHz), completely isolated from the domestic electrical wiring. By connecting a MoCA 2.5 adapter downstairs to an RJ45 port and existing coax wall outlet, and another adapter upstairs, you achieve a dedicated 2.5 Gbps full-duplex pipe with under 4ms latency and zero jitter — perfectly capable of streaming 4K HDR and high-tick competitive gaming.

  4. Solid Bare Copper Cat6 Cavity Drops

When permanent maximum performance is required, professional engineers execute internal cavity drops:

Air Vent / Disused Chimney Flue Riser: Utilizing disused fireplace breasts or vertical plumbing soil pipe boxing to drop LSOH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) solid copper Cat6 vertically between floors.

First-Floor Tongue-and-Groove Floorboard Access: Utilizing professional fiberglass cable rods and camera endoscopes to pull cables beneath the floor void without lifting carpets wall-to-wall.

Faceplate Termination: Terminating with shielded keystone jacks tested with a Fluke network certifier to guarantee 1000BASE-T throughput.

  5. Open-Source Calculator & Live Suite

Interactive Calculator: Ethernet Upstairs Speed & Latency Tool

GitHub Suite: gazpearce/cctv-security-hub

Starlink Chimney Mount Aerodynamics: 90mph Gale Wind Load Math & Structural Anchoring

By Gary Pearce — Lead Physical Infrastructure Engineer at ADI Communications (Direct: 07860 244 274)

Installing a SpaceX Starlink Gen 3 or Standard Actuated satellite panel across the exposed hills of the Pennines, Yorkshire Dales, or Scottish Highlands presents a severe mechanical engineering challenge. The flat rectangular surface acts as an aerodynamic sail. Under severe gale conditions (80–90 mph), aerodynamic drag generates substantial shear stress and overturning moments against masonry chimneys.

In this engineering breakdown, we present the structural drag calculations, overturning moments, and open-source tool we built: the Starlink Wind Load & Overturning Moment Calculator.

  1. The Aerodynamic Drag & Force Equations

The total aerodynamic force exerted on a flat rectangular antenna perpendicular to incident wind flow is governed by standard fluid dynamics:

$$F_{\text{drag}} = \frac{1}{2} \times \rho \times v^2 \times A \times C_d$$

Where:

$\rho$ (Air Density at sea level, 15°C) = $1.225 \text{ kg/m}^3$

$v$ (Wind Velocity) = converted from mph to m/s ($1\text{ mph} \approx 0.44704\text{ m/s}$)

$A$ (Surface Area of Starlink Dishy Gen 3) = $0.231 \text{ m}^2$ ($594\text{ mm} \times 383\text{ mm}$)

$C_d$ (Aerodynamic Drag Coefficient for a flat planar plate) = $1.17$

  Overturning Moment Calculation:

The overturning moment ($M$) acting at the chimney bracket fulcrum is calculated based on the mast lever arm ($h$):

$$M = F_{\text{drag}} \times h$$

For a 1.5-metre mast height:

Wind Speed

Velocity (m/s)

Dynamic Pressure ($q$)

Drag Force ($F_{\text{drag}}$)

Overturning Moment (1.5m Mast)

40 mph (Gale)

17.88 m/s

195.9 Pa

53.0 N (5.4 kgf)

79.5 Nm

60 mph (Storm)

26.82 m/s

440.7 Pa

119.1 N (12.1 kgf)

178.7 Nm

80 mph (Severe Gale)

35.76 m/s

783.5 Pa

211.8 N (21.6 kgf)

317.7 Nm

90 mph (Pennine Hurricane)

40.23 m/s

991.6 Pa

268.0 N (27.3 kgf)

402.0 Nm

  2. Why Masonry Chimney Drilling Violates Building Standards

Drilling expanding steel sleeve anchor bolts into weathered 19th-century lime mortar or soft brick chimney stacks creates micro-fissures. Under cyclic wind buffeting (vibration resonance at 12–18 Hz), anchor bolts pulverize the mortar matrix, resulting in catastrophic bracket tear-out.

Trade Standards for Zero-Penetration Chimney Lashing:

Galvanized Steel Wire Lashing Kit: 7-strand 1.5mm high-tensile galvanized or stainless steel wire wrapped 360° around the chimney stack.

Heavy-Duty Corner Mitres: 4 corner plates distribute compressive tension evenly without chipping clay bricks or sandstone arrises.

Double-Lashed Steel Brackets: For masts $\ge 1.5\text{ m}$, use twin cradle lashings spaced at least 300mm apart to counteract torsional moments.

Solid Copper WF100 / Cat6 with Low Friction Grommets: Black UV-rated Cat6 solid copper cabling routed with a clean downward drip loop to prevent water ingress into attic spaces.

  3. Open-Source Calculator & Suite Architecture

We have open-sourced our complete structural calculator suite on GitHub and GitLab:

Interactive Web App: ADI Starlink Wind Load Calculator

GitHub Repository: gazpearce/cctv-security-hub

GitLab Mirror: gitlab.com/aiagent1510/cctv-security-hub

GitHub Gist Formula: Wind Load & Aerodynamic Drag Gist

1080p Video Masterclass: Starlink UK Installation: Chimney Mount vs Roof Apex Storm Brackets on YouTube

  4. Field Installation Checklist

[x] Verify line-of-sight with Starlink App 100° obstruction cone.

[x] Select high-grade 1.5" or 2" heavy-gauge aluminium alloy mast (16 SWG minimum).

[x] Apply zinc paste to galvanized tensioning J-bolts to eliminate electrolytic corrosion.

[x] Terminate Cat6 with shielded RJ45 pass-through connectors and grounded Ethernet surge suppressor.

CCTV DORI Optics: Engineering Formulas & Sensor Math for UK Security Systems

By Gary Pearce — Lead Infrastructure Engineer at ADI Communications (Direct: 07860 244 274)

When deploying IP surveillance across commercial premises or UK domestic estates, selecting camera focal length based on guesswork guarantees failure. An 8MP 4K sensor produces useless footage if optical density at the target perimeter fails the legal admissibility standard.

In this guide, we break down the British Standard BS EN 62676-4 (DORI framework), the optical trigonometry behind focal length selection, and how we engineered our free client-side CCTV DORI Lens Calculator.

  1. The BS EN 62676-4 Optical Standard

The European and British standard BS EN 62676-4 defines surveillance requirements by pixel density (PPM – Pixels Per Metre) across a target plane:

Tier

Purpose

Required PPM

Visual Outcome

D - Detection

Perimeter Awareness

25 PPM

Discern whether human or vehicle is present

O - Observation

Behavioral Tracking

63 PPM

See clothing color and general actions

R - Recognition

Identity Confirmation

125 PPM

Recognize whether person is known to staff

I - Identification

Forensic Admissibility

250 PPM

Unambiguous facial evidence admissible in UK courts

  2. The Optical Geometry Equation

To calculate maximum identification distance ($D_{\text{ident}}$) for a sensor with horizontal pixel resolution ($R_{\text{horiz}}$), focal length ($f$), and sensor physical width ($w_{\text{sensor}}$):

$$D_{\text{ident}} = \frac{R_{\text{horiz}} \times f}{\text{PPM}{\text{target}} \times w{\text{sensor}}}$$

For standard 1/2.8" CMOS sensors commonly fitted in Hikvision and Dahua 4K IP turrets:

Sensor Width ($w$): 5.38 mm

Horizontal Resolution ($R$): 3840 pixels (4K UHD)

Identification PPM: 250 px/m

  Benchmark Field Ranges (4K Sensor):

2.8mm Wide Angle: Identifies up to 8.0 metres (Field of View ~108°)

4.0mm Standard Angle: Identifies up to 11.4 metres (Field of View ~88°)

6.0mm Narrow Telephoto: Identifies up to 17.1 metres (Field of View ~53°)

Fitting a 2.8mm wide-angle turret on an 18-metre driveway gives zero court-admissible identification faces; an intruder's face will only render ~110 PPM, rendering forensic capture impossible.

  3. Open-Source Implementation & Live Tools

To assist field engineers and system architects, we open-sourced our calculation engine in both pure JavaScript and Python:

Live Browser Interactive Tool: ADI CCTV DORI Lens Calculator

GitLab Mirror: gitlab.com/aiagent1510/cctv-security-hub

  4. Engineering Takeaways for Field Cabling

Cat6 Solid Bare Copper: Always use pure copper WF100 or solid Cat6 (never copper-clad aluminium / CCA) to avoid voltage drops under PoE+ load over 60m runs.

Drip Loops & Weatherproof Grommets: Masonry entries must have downward drip loops and silicone grommets to prevent water tracking along the cable jacket.

Lighting & EXIR: Infrared bounces back off moisture and fog; full-color low-light sensors (F1.0 aperture) provide higher contrast identification without IR glare.
