4K IP Surveillance, H.265 Compression & Cat6a Bandwidth Engineering: Field Guide

By Gary Pearce, Lead Physical Infrastructure Engineer at ADI Communications (https://adicommunications.co.uk).

Over the past 25 years deploying physical security systems, commercial telecom cabling, and high-performance networks across the UK, the single most common failure point in multi-camera 4K IP surveillance deployments is network and storage under-provisioning.

In this field engineering debrief, we review the real physical calculation formulas for H.265 4K camera bitrate allocation, PoE switch power budgets, and Cat6a solid copper transmission characteristics.

 1. 4K Camera Bitrate & Storage Allocation Formula

When calculating the total network throughput required for an 8-camera or 16-camera 4K UHD (3840x2160 @ 25fps) setup, calculating the steady-state bitrates is crucial to prevent packet drop and frame stutter.

The empirical calculation for storage consumption is given by:

S_daily = (R_bitrate * 3600 * 24) / (8 * 10^6) GB/day

Where:

R_bitrate = Bitrate in Mbps per camera (typically 6.0 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or 4.0 Mbps with Smart Codec / H.265+ enabled).

For an 8-camera system running H.265 at 6.0 Mbps:

Total Bandwidth: 8 * 6.0 = 48.0 Mbps

Daily Storage Consumption: 8 * 63.28 GB = 506.24 GB/day

30-Day Retention Target: 15.18 TB (requires minimum 16TB to 18TB raw surveillance-grade HDD like Western Digital Purple Pro or Seagate SkyHawk AI).

 2. Solid Copper Cat6 vs Cat5e Ingress Protocols

Never install copper-clad aluminium (CCA) cabling for IP camera deployments. CCA cable suffers from severe DC resistance and heat dissipation failure under continuous Power over Ethernet (PoE+ 802.3at / PoE++ 802.3bt).

Cable Standard: CAI-benchmarked solid oxygen-free copper Cat6 / Cat6a (23 AWG).

Termination: Shielded toolless RJ45 keystones connected to an earthed patch panel.

Maximum Distance: 90 metres horizontal run + 10 metres patch cords (100 metres total channel length per ANSI/TIA-568).

Exterior Ingress: Heavy-duty external-grade UV-stable black polyethylene (PE) jacketing routed via drip loops with silicone-sealed masonry entry grommets to eliminate water capillary ingress.

 3. PoE Switch Power Budget Allocation

When designing the head-end infrastructure, verify both the per-port wattage and the total switch power envelope:

Standard 4K Fixed Turret: 7.5W - 9.0W (PoE 802.3af Class 3)

4K DarkFighter / ColorVu with White Light Illuminator: 11.0W - 13.5W (PoE 802.3af Class 3)

Active Deterrence TiOC with Siren & Flashing Strobe: 14.5W - 18.0W (PoE+ 802.3at Class 4)

PTZ with High-Power IR & Defroster Heater: 25.0W - 30.0W (PoE+ 802.3at Class 4)

Ensure the PoE switch backplane bandwidth exceeds the combined non-blocking switching capacity:

C_switch >= 2 * sum(Port Speed)

For an 8-port Gigabit switch, a minimum switching fabric of 16 Gbps is required.
