What I Built

We all have notes that become harder to use the longer they sit around: meeting discussions, project ideas, reminders, and unfinished thoughts scattered across a page.

I built LazyDesk to make turning those notes into something useful a little easier.

LazyDesk is a notes-to-actions organizer designed to transform unstructured text into a readable summary, potential tasks, and follow-up questions. Its goal is simple: reduce the repetitive work of organizing information so people can spend more time acting on it.

The project takes inspiration from a sloth. Not everything needs to happen faster; sometimes, a calmer and simpler workflow is the better solution.

 Demo

Try LazyDesk: https://lazydesk-web-final.onrender.com

LazyDesk in action: organizing sample notes into a summary, next steps, and a follow-up question. The hosted demo uses a deterministic organizer, not an AI model.

The current hosted demo uses a deterministic organizer to demonstrate the notes-processing workflow. It does not call a hosted large language model.

The project also includes a local AI integration designed for Ollama and the open-weight Qwen 2.5 3B model. However, the local model workflow has not yet been validated end to end, so I am not presenting it as a tested or production-ready feature.

 Code

Explore the source code:

GitHub repository: https://github.com/gauravbalade/LazyDesk

The repository includes the React and Vite frontend, FastAPI backend, setup documentation, automated tests, and GitHub Actions workflow.

 How I Built It

LazyDesk uses React and Vite for the frontend and Python with FastAPI for the backend.

The backend accepts notes and returns structured output for the interface to display. The deterministic demo path allows people to try the workflow without downloading a model or sending notes to an external AI service.

I also worked on input validation, a health endpoint, handling pasted text and formatting artifacts, and automated checks through GitHub Actions. The project's CI checks have passed.

The intended local AI path uses Ollama with Qwen 2.5 3B. That integration still needs end-to-end testing to confirm model execution, output quality, and performance on a local machine.

This is an MVP, and I want the implementation and its limitations to be visible rather than claiming capabilities I have not yet verified.

 Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Productivity tools often handle information people may prefer to keep private: personal reminders, meeting notes, project plans, and unfinished ideas.

Open models and local inference offer an alternative to making a closed, externally hosted AI service the only possible route. When a local model workflow is properly implemented, users can experiment with models on their own machines and have more control over where their information is processed.

Open source also makes learning and improvement more accessible. Developers can inspect the implementation, adapt it to their needs, report problems, and contribute improvements instead of treating the software as a black box.

For LazyDesk, the goal is to explore a practical, understandable tool that users can inspect and extend. Validating the local open-weight model workflow is an important next step toward that goal.

 What I Learned

Building LazyDesk reminded me that a useful AI application is more than a model name in a configuration file. The integration must actually work, its outputs need to be evaluated, and users should understand what happens to their data.

It also reinforced the importance of testing ordinary inputs, messy pasted text, duplicate content, and cases where no explicit tasks exist. A good organizer should not invent work just to fill a task list.

 Final Thoughts

LazyDesk is a work in progress, but its purpose is clear: turn scattered notes into a clearer next step without adding unnecessary complexity.

I would love to hear how you approach note organization, what you would improve, and which features would make a tool like this genuinely useful.

Project: LazyDesk on GitHub

Try it: Open the live demo
