Hosting Types for Developers: Which One Fits Which Project?

Every few weeks, someone asks me where to deploy a client's site, and the honest answer is always "it depends." So instead of a hot take, here is the mental model I use.

The one variable that separates the plans
All five common hosting types differ along a single axis: how much of the machine is yours, and who else is on it.
Type
What you get
Good fit
Watch out for
Shared
A slice of one server, shared with many sites
Personal blogs, small brochure sites
Noisy neighbors during traffic spikes
VPS

A virtual server with guaranteed resources
Growing sites, custom configs
You manage more yourself
Cloud
Several linked servers, scales with demand
Uneven or seasonal traffic
Costs can be harder to predict
Dedicated
A full physical server
Large or high-security projects
Highest price, needs real management
Managed WordPress
Hosting tuned and maintained for WP
Teams who want less upkeep
Often limits plugins, costs more than shared
How I'd pick, by project
• Portfolio or personal blog: shared. Don't overthink it.
• Small business site with a contact form: shared or managed, and pay attention to support quality.
• Growing WordPress site: managed WordPress, or a VPS if you're comfortable owning the server.
• Online store: VPS or cloud, and confirm how backups and security are handled.
• Sudden traffic spikes: cloud.
• Large or sensitive project: dedicated, ideally with someone managing it.

Things the pricing page won't volunteer
• Introductory prices often jump at renewal. Read the renewal line.
• "Unlimited" storage or bandwidth usually has a fair-use clause.
• A host's backups are not a substitute for your own. Keep a separate copy.
• Check the control panel before you commit. If you have never seen cPanel, it is worth a look.

A mistake that comes up constantly
Not every "server" product is a web host. A Minecraft server, for example, is a game server. A normal website plan is built to serve pages, not to run a live multiplayer game, so look for a provider that explicitly supports it.

Don't over-provision on day one
Most providers let you upgrade later. Start with what the project needs, measure, and move up when the data tells you to.
I put the whole thing together in one place, with a checklist and FAQ, here: Website Hosting Explained: 5 Types and How to Choose.
Which plan type do you default to, and why? I'm curious where people disagree.

How to Check DNS Propagation: A Practical Guide

How to Check DNS Propagation: A Practical Guide

You changed a DNS record, but your website is still pointing to the old server.

Before changing the record again, it is worth checking whether the DNS update has actually reached different DNS resolvers.

This is where DNS propagation checking becomes useful.

 What Is DNS Propagation?

DNS propagation describes the process of DNS changes becoming available through DNS resolvers.

When you update an A record, CNAME record, MX record, or nameserver, the change may not appear everywhere immediately.

DNS resolvers can temporarily keep previously retrieved DNS information in their cache. The TTL of a DNS record affects how long that information may be cached.

Because of this, different DNS resolvers can sometimes return different results after a DNS change.

 How to Check DNS Propagation

The simplest approach is to use a DNS propagation checker.

Enter your domain name and select the record type you want to inspect.

For example, if you changed an A record, check whether different DNS servers are returning the new IP address.

You can also check DNS records from the command line.

 Using nslookup

On Windows, you can run:

nslookup example.com

To query a specific DNS server, you can use:

nslookup example.com 8.8.8.8

This can help you compare the response from different DNS resolvers.

 Using dig

On Linux, macOS, or systems where
dig
is installed, you can run:

dig example.com

You can also query a specific resolver:

dig @8.8.8.8 example.com

These commands let you inspect the DNS response directly instead of relying only on an online checker.

Why Do DNS Checkers Show Different Results?

Imagine you changed your domain's A record from one IP address to another.

A DNS resolver that still has the previous response cached may return the old IP address.

Another resolver may already have the updated record.

So you might see something like this:

Resolver A → New IP
Resolver B → New IP
Resolver C → Old IP
Resolver D → New IP

This does not automatically mean that your DNS configuration is wrong.

Check the authoritative DNS configuration as well as the responses from multiple resolvers.

 Check Your Nameservers Too

If you recently moved your domain to another DNS provider, checking the nameservers is especially important.

Your domain needs to use the correct authoritative nameservers.

You can check them with:

nslookup -type=NS example.com

Or with:

dig NS example.com

If the domain is still using the previous nameservers, changing records at the new DNS provider may not affect the domain.

How Long Does DNS Propagation Take?

There is no universal time that applies to every DNS change.

The result depends on the DNS record, TTL values, resolver caching, and the type of change that was made.

Instead of assuming that a DNS update has failed, check the results from multiple resolvers and verify the authoritative records.

 Common DNS Propagation Problems

Here are some common situations that can make a DNS change appear unsuccessful:

The wrong DNS record was changed

The domain is using different authoritative nameservers

A DNS record still has an old value

A resolver has cached the previous response

The DNS record contains a configuration error

The domain has conflicting DNS records

Checking these items can help narrow down the problem.

 Final Check

When troubleshooting a recent DNS change, I recommend checking three things:

The authoritative nameservers

The DNS record at the authoritative server

The response from multiple DNS resolvers

This gives you a clearer picture of whether the change has propagated or whether there is a configuration problem.

For a more detailed step-by-step guide, you can also read:

How to Check DNS Propagation
https://globalvior.com/how-to-check-dns-propagation/

If you regularly manage domains or websites, understanding these basic DNS checks can save a lot of unnecessary troubleshooting.
