A lot of mobile apps are developed and tested on fast Wi-Fi.

The problem is that real users are not always on fast Wi-Fi.

They may be on weak 4G, congested mobile networks, hotel Wi-Fi, public Wi-Fi, or very slow connections. That is often where problems appear:

loading indicators that never stop

API requests that time out

retry logic that behaves badly

images that take too long to load

uploads that fail midway

screens that appear broken while data is still loading

poor offline and reconnect behavior

I wanted a simple way to reproduce those situations on a real phone without constantly changing router settings or setting up a proxy on another computer.

So I built Pausix.

Pausix is a mobile internet speed limiter and network throttling tool that lets you restrict download and upload speeds directly on the device.

What it does

Pausix currently supports:

separate download and upload speed limits

predefined network speed profiles

custom speed presets

quick start and stop controls

real-device network throttling

testing without changing router configuration

One of the workflows I use is testing the same app flow at progressively slower speeds.

For example:

128 Kbps

384 Kbps

1 Mbps

3 Mbps

The difference can be surprisingly useful.

An app that looks perfect on a fast connection can immediately expose issues once bandwidth becomes limited.

Why test on a real device?

Browser developer tools and emulators already provide network throttling, and they are extremely useful.

But sometimes I want to test the complete application experience on the actual device.

That includes things such as:

authentication flows

image loading

API retries

file uploads

background and foreground transitions

pagination

startup behavior

third-party SDK requests

For mobile QA, being able to change the network condition and then use the application normally is convenient.

A simple slow-network test

One basic test I like is:

Launch the application with an unrestricted connection.

Complete an important user flow.

Set the connection to around 384 Kbps.

Repeat exactly the same flow.

Reduce it further to around 128 Kbps.

Watch loading, timeout, retry, and error states.

This can expose assumptions that are almost invisible during normal development.

For example, a button may technically work correctly but appear completely unresponsive because the UI provides no loading feedback while waiting for the API.

Or retry logic may generate several duplicate requests once the connection becomes slow.

These aren't necessarily networking bugs. They are often UX and application-state bugs that only become obvious under bad network conditions.

How Pausix works

Pausix uses the device's VPN/network APIs to apply the network limitation locally.

It is not intended to be a privacy VPN, and traffic is not routed through a remote VPN server just to perform throttling.

The goal is simply to make controlled network testing easier on real devices.

Where I want to take it

I'm currently deciding how strongly to focus Pausix toward developers and QA engineers rather than keeping it purely as a general-purpose internet speed limiter.

Some features I'm considering are:

named QA network profiles

one-tap EDGE / Slow 3G / Fast 3G profiles

latency simulation

packet-loss simulation

unstable-network scenarios

temporary throttling sessions

testing history

better network statistics

I'd be interested to know which of these would actually be useful in a real mobile testing workflow.

I'd appreciate feedback

If you work in mobile development or QA, I'd especially like to know:

How do you currently test slow network conditions?

Which network speeds do you normally test?

Do you test packet loss and latency as well as bandwidth?

What would make a mobile throttling tool genuinely useful to you?

I'm still improving the app, so technical criticism is welcome.

10 free codes

I also have 10 free codes for DEV Community members who want to try Pausix and give feedback.

097H9XEP43QSN9H5P0R7LTN

ANYCG2N8K7RF5CB2BLPBPA2

QZFV9QFZ3VMX3GB99NTBAKH

W9HMW6EBRVTEAC12RPQSNP2

TJ72LQUCR196XUM0LP8PXVH

XMBW0P3FA7CC6YALNW6QSLC

K5PU5VPL679N4VA8Q5SXA60

EVTBRZA4KF3QK8YP3MCHWN7

6C3MLZY95P3PSAQX4TAFAX4

7FP93SVPNSBG60B9F5YJA5K

If you use one, leaving a quick comment saying which code you claimed would help prevent others from trying an already-used code.
