I built pgStudio — a performance-first PostgreSQL client for real-world databases

Most Postgres GUIs fall into two camps:

Feature-heavy and slow — great on paper, painful on a 500-table schema or a 2M-row result set

Fast but shallow — fine for quick lookups, not for debugging production

I kept hitting that wall daily. So I built pgStudio — a Postgres studio designed around one idea:

Get from question → verified answer as fast as possible, even on big schemas and big tables.

 🎬 Watch it in action

 What is pgStudio?

pgStudio is a modern PostgreSQL client for developers who live in the database:

Browse schemas, tables, views, functions, and triggers

Run SQL in a Monaco-powered editor with formatting and risk guardrails

Inspect live sessions and kill blocking queries

Visualize query plans and schema topology

Design schemas with AI assistance

Manage migrations with safety checks

It ships as a native macOS app (Tauri + Rust), with a web/iPad path via an optional HTTP data plane.

Tagline: Performance-first Postgres Studio

 The problem I was solving

If you’ve ever:

Waited 10+ seconds for a schema tree to load

Had your IDE freeze while a large
SELECT
streams in

Jumped between 4 tabs to go from slow query → EXPLAIN → sessions → index idea

…you know the pain.

pgStudio is built for that workflow — one tool, one flow, no UI lockups.

 What makes it different

 ⚡ Fast on big data

Virtualized result rendering — scroll large result sets without choking the UI

Pagination-first data access — browse tables without pulling everything into memory

Background metadata refresh — schema navigation stays snappy on complex databases

 🔍 Performance troubleshooting built in

Not bolted on as an afterthought:

EXPLAIN + plan visualization (including flame-style views)

Live sessions panel — see
pg_stat_activity
, cancel or terminate backends

Index builder — explore index candidates without leaving the app

Schema topology — ER-style graph of your database structure

Query history — revisit and export past runs

 🛡️ Safety-first by default

SQL risk guard before dangerous writes

Migration concierge — scan for lock risk and destructive ops before you ship

Clear environment signals so you know where you’re connected

🤖 AI that understands your schema

Built-in AI chat (Gemini) with schema-aware context:

Ask natural-language questions about your database

Get help writing or fixing SQL

AI schema designer for greenfield projects

Your credentials stay direct to your DB — AI gets compressed schema context, not raw connection strings.

 🧰 Developer-native UX

Command palette for power users

Keyboard shortcuts everywhere

Git / GitHub integration for schema-as-code workflows

SSH tunnel support for remote Postgres

Optional real-time collaboration for pair debugging

 Under the hood

pgStudio is not a thin Electron wrapper around a JDBC driver.

Layer

Tech

UI

Next.js + React + Zustand + Monaco

Desktop shell

Tauri v2

Database driver

Rust (
tokio-postgres
) — direct, no JVM overhead

Web mode

Rust Axum data plane API

AI

Control-plane proxy to Gemini

On desktop, queries go UI → Tauri invoke → Rust Postgres pool → your database.

On web/iPad, the same UI talks to a data plane over HTTPS with bearer auth.

That architecture is why it feels lighter and more responsive than traditional Java-based IDEs.

 Who it’s for

Ideal user: solo devs and small teams (1–20) running Postgres-backed products with:

Lots of tables

Large row counts

Frequent production debugging

If your database is tiny, any tool works.

If your database is real, responsiveness matters every day.

 What’s in v1.4.7 today

✅ Connection manager with saved profiles & SSH tunnels

✅ Schema browser + data grid with search & map view

✅ SQL editor + query history

✅ Sessions, indexes, extensions

✅ Schema topology graph

✅ Migration studio

✅ AI chat + schema designer

✅ macOS desktop builds

✅ Web/iPad path via data plane

🚧 Team collaboration, replay bundles, and deeper benchmark comparisons are active areas.

 Try it

macOS: Download from [your link]

Web / self-host: Run the data plane via Docker Compose

Feedback: I’m actively looking for early users — especially people with messy, large Postgres databases

If that’s you, I’d love to hear what breaks and what saves you time.

 Why I’m sharing this

Database tools are unsexy until your app is down at 2am and you’re staring at a lock chain in pgAdmin.

I built pgStudio because I wanted something I’d keep open all day — fast, safe, and built for how developers actually debug Postgres.

If you’ve felt the same frustration, give it a spin and tell me what you think.

 Links

🌐 Website: https://apps.apple.com/in/app/pgstudio/id6759511669?mt=12

Built with Rust, Next.js, and too many late-night EXPLAIN plans.

Question for the community: What’s the one thing your current Postgres GUI still can’t do well? Drop it in the comments — I’m prioritizing the roadmap from real pain points.
