Hello, dear DEV community!

Some of you here might remember me as a DEV.to/Forem team member. It would be an understatement to say that my time at dev.to taught me a LOT about how passionate and dedicated to learning the broader open source community is 💞

Since my amazing time on team DEV, I have been working for the Rust Foundation: the independent, nonprofit steward of the Rust programming language and its global community as their Director of Communications & Marketing. As many of you here will know, Rust has been the most-admired programming language for 8 years running, according to StackOverflow, and for good reason—there are so many exciting things being built with Rust, tons of fascinating use cases, and areas to explore in this growing corner of open source. In short, if you're actively building things with Rust or you are curious about it, you know it's a powerful language with an impact that is deepening every day.

In addition to providing grants for Rust maintainers, providing infrastructure support for the Rust Project, and facilitating many impactful technology initiatives benefitting Rust and its users, the Rust Foundation hosts an event called RustConf—the original annual conference for the Rust community. I wanted to pop in here and tell you all a bit more about this year's RustConf taking place in Seattle, Washington (and online!) from September 2-5, 2025.

  About Our Program

There's so much to look forward to at RustConf 2025! Here's what I think will be most compelling about RustConf to the DEV community...

  Future-Focused Content

"Async Day" Workshops @ RustConf
For the first time this year, we’re hosting Async Day on Tuesday, September 2 — a full day of hands-on, in-person workshops dedicated to real-world async in Rust. Whether you’re learning .await or integrating Rust with C++, there’s a workshop designed to meet you where you are.

This year's Async Day workshops:

"Async Design Patterns in Rust” — Hosted by: Conrad Ludgate

"Async Rust & C++ Interop in Production” — Hosted by: Aida Getoeva

"Async Fundamentals" — Hosted by: Herbert Wolverson of Ardan Labs

One of these Async Day experiences can be added to your in-person registration at checkout. Learn more about our workshops here.

  Keynotes

RustConf 2025 will feature four inspiring keynotes by the following leaders:

Mark Russinovich (CTO, Microsoft Azure) —
"From Blue Screens to Orange Crabs: Microsoft’s Rusty Revolution"

Ellie Huxtable (Atuin) — "Rust All the Way Down"

Jonathan Kelley (Dioxus) — "High-Level Rust and the Future of Application Development"

Nicholas Matsakis & Jack Huey (The Rust Project) —"Vision Doc: The Next 10 Years of Rust"

  Talks

In addition to the keynotes listed above, we'll also have many talks from people using Rust to address human trafficking, power healthcare technology, develop a secure and anonymous whistleblowing system at a major news publication, and so much more!

>> View our full program

  Community Room

For the second time, we're offering a room specifically dedicated to Rust-focused lightning talks and discussions. This means that anyone can sign up to share what they're working on and their perspectives about Rust.

  Networking

We'll also have a dynamic expo hall experience filled with exhibiting sponsors who are eager to talk to developers about shared Rust opportunities, including jobs, project to contribute to, and much more. We've announced a few sponsors already and are about to share more!

Join the "Rustacean" community at RustConf 2025 🦀

Thanks for taking the time to read this dispatch from a former DEV staff member! It's been amazing checking back in on this platform and reading about what many of you have been working on. Shout-out to all the wonderful folks contributing to and moderating the DEV rust tag.

I know I'm a tad biased, but I truly believe that this year's RustConf is the perfect one for Rust newbies or RustConf first-timers to join, because, in addition to celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the first stable release of Rust this year, we'll be exploring what's NEXT in Rust and the truly innovative places it's showing up. In other words, even if you're not a longtime Rust contributor, you'll walk away with a sense of the opportunities that exist in this ecosystem.

If I've successfully convinced you to join us at RustConf 2025, register while spots remain! If you have some Rust experience and are interested in a hands-on "Async Day" workshop in Seattle, you'll definitely want to register for one soon while we have capacity.

Finally, if you do decide to join us in Seattle, please get in touch with me! I'd love to know who from the DEV community is onsite so I can chat with you 🧡

P.S. Partner with RustConf!
If you work for an organization that is invested in the success of Rust/open source and would benefit from gaining brand visibility at an event filled with active and passionate programmers, partnering with us as a sponsor of RustConf is a great opportunity! Learn more about our sponsorship opportunities and start a conversation with my fantastic team here.

Every Tuesday we round up the previous week's top posts based on traffic, engagement, and a hint of editorial curation. The typical week starts on Monday and ends on Sunday, but don't worry, we take into account posts that are published later in the week.

  Enable GitSign Today

The recent PyPI phishing attacks have compromised several Python library maintainers and their packages. This incident encouraged @erikaheidi to write this post about a simple task you can do as an open source maintainer or contributor to ensure your code is coming from the right place.

In this post, @maurerkrisztian explores the value of side projects. If you've been thinking of starting a project outside of your school program or job, this one goes out to you!

Here are some tips that @ondrejsevcik learned in their 10 years of development. Try to implement a few into your career!

Why your site should be under 14kb

It isn’t surprising that having a smaller website means it loads faster. What you might not know is that a 14kb page will load faster than a 15kb page, while a 15kb page won’t load significantly faster than a 16kb one. @shadowfaxrodeo will explain why.

Every Tuesday we round up the previous week's top posts based on traffic, engagement, and a hint of editorial curation. The typical week starts on Monday and ends on Sunday, but don't worry, we take into account posts that are published later in the week.

How to use HTTP Status Codes

HTTP status codes are short messages that are provided when we interact with a server, showing us what’s happening. See if you’re using those status codes right with @pragativerma18.

Looking back on this past week, what was something you were proud of accomplishing?

All wins count — big or small 🎉

Examples of 'wins' include:

Getting out into nature

Developers spend an enormous amount of time being stuck. Here, @stebunovd offers some advice on how to learn to be better at getting unstuck.

  Write to Improve

@wesen started writing regularly a year ago and became a better developer for it. Here are some tips to start this process yourself!

  Coding as art

The community loved this artwork by @asyrafhussin4 and it's easy to see why. True artistry — and the palette is comprised of only HTML & CSS 💫

Every Tuesday we round up the previous week's top posts based on traffic, engagement, and a hint of editorial curation. The typical week starts on Monday and ends on Sunday, but don't worry, we take into account posts that are published later in the week.

  Why Learn Typescript?

@annabaker is learning Typescript and finding it isn’t as hard as one might think. Here is some great inspiration to start learning Typescript yourself.

Making Use of Your Old Laptop

Instead of adding to the already mounting electronic waste, @alejandro_du takes an old laptop and transforms it into a new database server using Ubuntu Server, Docker, and a MariaDB database.

  The Ultimate Engineering Tool

That diagrams are ubiquitous is not a coincidence. In this post, @wesen shares the beauty of diagrams and how useful they are across and within all disciplines.

  Automating REST API Security Testing

Most APIs are public-facing and seldom go through a proper security testing cycle.

Every Tuesday we round up the previous week's top posts based on traffic, engagement, and a hint of editorial curation. The typical week starts on Monday and ends on Sunday, but don't worry, we take into account posts that are published later in the week.

  On Criticism

Every developer has both been on the receiving and the giving end of criticism. It’s a vital part of our job, so let’s learn how to do it optimally with @lexlohr!

About criticism

        #productivity
        #career
        #discuss

You Don’t Need to be Perfect

We, as developers, want the best for ourselves and what we produce. As we build from scratch it’s natural to be committed to what we produce. @mstryoda questions if we have to be perfect or if we are unintentionally forced to.

  Retro Animated CSS Border

Inspired from the ShopTalkShow’s temporary theme, @chokcoco recreates a similar retro aesthetic.

  Clean Architecture: React

This text is part of a series of texts from @rubemfsv about Clean Architecture analysis applied with different frameworks and languages. This week, we’re covering React.

Drag and drop applications are very common nowadays, they are great for the user experience and nowadays people notice when it’s missing. @franklin030601 shares an easy way to set it up in your React app without libraries.
