The short version

GTA 6 on PS5 reportedly requires system software 14.10 or newer, according to PlayStation Store data shared by the datamining account PlayStation Game Size in early October 2026. {{st:reported}} Sony and Rockstar have not confirmed it.

For normal players this changes nothing: keep your PS5 on the latest update and the game will run. Sony released firmware 14.20 around 21 October. {{st:reported}}

A firmware requirement is routine for a big new game, because games are built against recent system software. This one got attention because it would block GTA 6 on PS5 consoles kept on older firmware to run jailbreaks, and with it the pirated copies that jailbreaks make possible. That is the reason gaming and tech sites have covered every PS5 update this month.

What PS5 owners should do

- Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and choose Update System Software.
- Turn on automatic updates in the same menu, and allow updates in rest mode, so later patches install overnight.
- Do it before pre-loading opens on {{fact:preload_date}}. A system update and a game download at the same time only slow each other down.

Firmware updates are small next to the game itself, so storage is still the main thing to sort out. Why jailbroken consoles matter for everyone

Older firmware exploits let hackers run unsigned code and dump game files. By tying a launch to new firmware, publishers make piracy harder in the first weeks, when sales matter most. Sony's New PlayStation Pulse Headset Launches the Same Day as GTA 6

Sony's new PlayStation Pulse wireless headset launches on 19 November 2026, the same day as GTA 6, for $99.99, £89.99 or €99.99. Pre-orders open on 29 October at 10am local time, with a 7am PT slot on PlayStation Direct in the US. {{st:official}}

You do not need it to play GTA 6. Any headphones plugged into the DualSense already get PS5 3D audio.

Sony is timing a lot of hardware to the biggest launch of the year, from limited-edition controllers to this headset. The Pulse sits below the existing Pulse Elite and keeps its main selling point: planar magnetic drivers, which Sony says are now larger for fuller bass.

Launch regions include the US, Canada, the UK, most of Western and Northern Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. The UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt are not on the first list. A higher-end Pulse Edge with noise cancellation follows in early 2027, price not announced. {{st:reported}}

Is it worth buying for GTA 6?

GTA 6 runs at {{fact:console_fps}} on consoles, and a headset will not change that, but sound matters in a busy open world: traffic, police radio and directional gunfire all benefit from PS5 Tempest 3D audio. The Pulse's PlayStation Link connection also works with the PlayStation Portal, which helps if you plan to {{link:gta-6-ps-portal-remote-play|play GTA 6 on the Portal}}.

If you already own decent headphones, plug them into the controller and save the money. If you want wireless with low latency on PS5, the Pulse is the cheapest official option with planar drivers. Quick answer

These eight profiles come from Rockstar's official Grand Theft Auto VI website, published around Trailer 2 in May 2025. The descriptions below are our summaries, not Rockstar's wording.

Jason Duval

Jason grew up around grifters and con artists, joined the Army to get away from that life, and ended up back in it anyway. When the game starts he is working for local drug runners in the Leonida Keys and looking for an easier way out. He lives at one of Brian Heder's properties, rent free, in exchange for helping with Brian's business. Trailer 2 shows his relationship with Lucia as the turning point in his story. {{st:official}}

Lucia Caminos

Lucia was taught to fight from an early age, and the first trailer opens with her in a Leonida prison. Rockstar's profile says she ended up there trying to protect her family, and that she now wants the better life her mother hoped for. Out of prison, she is determined not to go back. She was the first character revealed, in Trailer 1 in December 2023. {{st:official}}

Jason and Lucia are partners in crime and in their relationship, and the trailers lean on comparisons to Bonnie and Clyde. How their story ends is, naturally, not known. {{st:unknown}}

The supporting cast

- Cal Hampton: Jason's friend and another of Brian's associates. He prefers staying home, distrusts almost everyone, and listens in on Coast Guard communications. Expect comic relief.
- Boobie Ike: a Vice City local legend who turned money from the streets into legitimate businesses, including real estate, a strip club and a recording studio.
- Dre'Quan Priest: a former dealer who wants to make it in music. He runs Only Raw Records with Boobie and signed the Real Dimez.
- Real Dimez: Bae-Luxe and Roxy, friends since high school, who built a following through rap and social media before signing to Only Raw.
- Raul Bautista: a confident, experienced bank robber who looks for people willing to take big risks. His appetite for danger is what makes him a liability.
- Brian Heder: an old-school smuggler in the Keys who runs a boat yard with his wife, Lori, and lets Jason live at one of his places in return for help.

Did the Extended Look add new characters?

The roughly 26-minute "Extended Look" that premiered on Netflix on 27 August 2026 showed long stretches of gameplay with Jason and Lucia, and featured Brian and Cal on screen. Coverage of the video did not report any new named character profiles. Who voices Jason and Lucia?

An IMDb listing and some social media posts present these as confirmed, but IMDb is user-edited and Rockstar has not confirmed them. The full credits will settle it on {{fact:release_date}}. We will update this table the day they are public.

Will old GTA characters return?

Rockstar has not announced any returning characters from GTA V, GTA IV or the older Vice City games. Is there extra character content in the Ultimate Edition?

Rockstar describes the Ultimate Edition as adding extra in-game content for Jason and Lucia's story. It has not listed every item. GTA 6 Limited Edition DualSense Controllers: Price, Release Date and Where to Buy

Sony is releasing two Grand Theft Auto VI Limited Edition DualSense controllers, one black and one white, on 19 November 2026 alongside the game. They cost $84.99, £74.99 or €84.99. {{st:official}}

Pre-orders opened on 10 September. The black model is sold mainly through PlayStation Direct, while the white one is going to more retailers. Stock is limited. {{st:reported}}

Sony first showed the controllers on the PlayStation Blog on 3 September 2026. They are cosmetic editions: both use Vice City styling, and underneath they are standard DualSense pads with the same haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and battery. They will not make GTA 6 play any differently.

Prices and dates come from Sony's announcement as reported by several outlets {{st:official}}. Retailer stock varies by country, and resellers often list limited controllers far above the official price. If a listing costs much more than the prices above, wait for restocks at official stores rather than paying a reseller.

Should you buy one for GTA 6?

Only if you want the look or need a second controller anyway. Every PS5 already includes a DualSense, and GTA 6 is a single-player game at launch, so most players will not need another pad. GTA 6 Digital Pre-Orders Reach an Estimated 6.45 Million, 74% on PlayStation

GTA 6 has about 6.45 million digital pre-orders worth roughly $630 million, according to Sensor Tower's tracker updated on 20 October 2026. About 74% are on PlayStation and 26% on Xbox. {{st:estimate}}

Rockstar and Take-Two have not confirmed these numbers, and they leave out boxed copies.

Sensor Tower is a market research firm that estimates digital store sales. Its GTA VI tracker has become the most-quoted source for pre-order numbers, because Take-Two only shares general comments about demand. The latest update shows steady growth four weeks before launch, and a platform gap that has barely moved.

What the numbers mean for you

- Expect busy servers on launch night. Millions of digital copies will unlock at the same time, so pre-load early. Pre-loading opens on {{fact:preload_date}}, so follow the {{link:gta-6-preload|pre-load guide}}.
